by Emma Struve Kristin and De’Von Clark met almost eight years ago while both were student athletes at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. De’Von is originally from Chicago and is now the recreation director at Job Corps. Kristin grew up in the Denison area and is employed at Sundquist Engineering. They became engaged about three years ago, though Kristin admitted they did not start planning the wedding until last October. Choosing a date for the wedding was a family affair. Kristin’s twin brother Chris is in the National Guard and will be deployed overseas for the third time beginning in August. It was very important, she said, to have him and his family involved in their wedding, which took place in May. “We wanted it out at Boulder’s because we wanted it in town. All the family is from out of state,” Kristin said. “There’s a hotel right there…It’s beautiful out there.” Kristin purchased her wedding gown at Bridal Balcony in Denison. It was one of the first two dresses she tried on. The ceremony was at First United Methodist Church and the reception took place at Boulders Conference Center. Before the wedding took place, Kristin and De’Von hosted a rehearsal dinner at the Lookout Shelter at Yellow Smoke Park. “We grilled and played games,” Kristin said. HOMETOWN WEDDING . . . Clarks aim for simple and elegant for a stress-free wedding HOMETOWN WEDDING, from Page 1 “It’s a setting that’s relaxing where everyone can sit down and get to know each other.” When selecting decorations Kristin said, “I wanted things to look elegant but I did not want to spend a lot of money.” The colors for the wedding were a deep, apple red, white, and black. She and De’Von crafted their own table center pieces for the reception from glass bowls, clear rock, waterproof red LED lights, floating candles, and water. Party favors consisted of clear boxes filled with red and white M&Ms with peanuts. She did note that when
ordering items online it is especially important to order enough. “I’m the kind of person who has never ever thought of planning my wedding,” Kristin confessed. “I just kind of went with the flow if something looked nice.” De’Von did some looking online for decorations, which is where he found the special LED lights. The bridal bouquet, as well as flowers for bridesmaids, Kristin found premade, on sale at a craft store. She was also able to find coordinating boutonnieres and corsages. The Lidderdale Country Store served meatballs, pork, chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, dinner
rolls, and a selection of salads at the reception. “They were amazing, I would recommend them to anybody,” Kristin stated. HyVee made a simple, white wedding cake for the Clarks. Portraits by Hope, Dow City, was the wedding photographer. Kristin explained, “I’d seen picture she’d done, and she does such an amazing job, I decided to go with her.” “It was pretty stress free because we did go simple,” Kristin mentioned. Kristin said her simple, elegant wedding “put the finishing touches” on the relationship she and De’Von already started. The Clarks, with daughter Kyia, reside in Denison.

Getting engaged is just the beginning…Now what? Are you one of the thousands of couples who got engaged this spring? This is the time for you and your soon-to-be to get everything you ever wanted - the time to start from scratch, to upgrade, expand and replace. To turn a whole bunch of mismatched mine and yours into a lifetime of ours. "When it comes to registering, relax, take your time and have fun," recommended Audrey Stavish, a Bridal and Gift Registry expert at Bed Bath & Beyond. "Go back to the store as many times as needed, or update your registry online. There aren't any rules that you must follow. Choose items that are right for you and your soon-to-be. Go through the registry process together and have fun!" Following are some additional tips to make wedding planning a breeze: Plan ahead Start a bridal registry as soon as you say "yes." This way you will be prepared for your engagement party and bridal shower, as well as your wedding. Periodically update your registry by adding more products if you need to, even after the wedding. Be kind to procrastinators. Don't be shy Register for gifts in a range of prices and categories. This will give guests and group givers lots of options to choose from. Look back and plan ahead Discuss your background and personal preferences beforehand. It's also im-
portant to consider your future. Consider things like how often you'll entertain and how much you will be cooking. Visit a store It's in your best interest to visit a store and schedule an appointment with an expert consultant. Touch the towels, heft the flatware, see everything in person. Do the math Experts advise registering for two to three items times the number of guests you plan to have. Close friends and family will rely on your registry for special events leading up to the wedding - such as engagement parties, bridal showers and holidays. Your guests will appreciate having lots of choices when they shop for you. Be sure to refresh your list regularly as gifts get purchased. Register now, because you won't buy it later You may think you will ... but you won't. Now is the time to let others get you the stuff you'd never buy yourself. Your friends and family might even get together to purchase a higher priced "group gift." Remember the rule of three When it comes to setting your table, if you choose bold patterns for your china and flatware, pick a more simple style of glassware. Prefer intricate stemware? Pair it with simpler patterns of china and flatware. So, it's bold/bold/simple or simple/simple/bold.
Following a few wedding registry tips will help relieve some of the stress associated with wedding planning. Photo courtesy of Brad Bonner

How to say “Thank You” A marriage of finances It is customary for the bride- and groom-to-be to show their gratitude to all of the people who will make their wedding day special. Weddings today feature people who have roles that go beyond the traditional, like interior decorators and musical soloists. It's important to remember to thank everyone who contributes to the celebration. Thank-you gifts should be something thoughtful and enduring. Avoid fad or gag gifts. These gifts should be presented at a pre-wedding occasion. It's customarily done at the rehearsal dinner. Crafting personalized remarks is a nice way to call attention to the unique tasks of each wedding participant. Don't simply pass the gifts out in one fell swoop. This way the gift will have more meaning through a personal message. Don't let thank-you gifts be forgotten. Start thinking of gift ideas early on and plan for any extra time for engraving or other personalization. Groomsmen: When selecting gifts for groomsmen, think about a gift they would like but probably wouldn't buy themselves. This can be cuff links, a fine watch, money clip, or a high-quality wallet. Feel free to splurge a little
more on the best man. Bridesmaids: Traditional gifts for bridesmaids are different types of jewelry. Monogrammed stationery, a spa treatment, or another pampering session are other great ideas. As you have with the best man, feel free to bestow a little more thanks on the maid of honor with a more lavish gift. Younger bridal party members can get a similar gift, but one in scale with their ages. Clergy: Many couples choose to make a financial donation to their house of worship. Additional tipping or monetary gifts for musicians, alter boys/girls, can also be a thoughtful gesture. A donation toward an officiant's vestments may also be appreciated. Parents of the Bride and Groom: The couple may choose to bestow a gift on their parents, which can be especially meaningful if the parents are taking care of the financial responsibility of the wedding. Jewelry or fine gifts in similar scope to that of the bridal party are good ideas. Consider engraved picture frames that can house a wedding portrait down the road. Others: Readers, soloists, ushers, etc. can be given a small token of your appreciation, like a gift card or a personalized memento.
When two people decide to get married, they're not only combining their possessions, but they're also bringing together unique ideas about personal finance. These ideas may bring challenges to the relationship and should be discussed beforehand for the best start to the marriage. Planning ahead can build a strong financial foundation for a new marriage. Before a couple becomes a family unit, each person has his or her own way of saving and spending, as well as their own approach to finances. Additionally, one person may be bringing more debt to the relationship than the other. How finances will be handled should be one of the first conversations - even before a reception venue is booked or a wedding gown is chosen. When joining finances, consider these factors: Bank accounts: Generally couples will find that a combination of joint and personal accounts makes finances easier. The joint account is used for monthly bills, housing expenses and things the couple does together. Separate accounts can be used for discretionary spending, like vacation accounts, dabbling in investments or simply for splurging. This enables each person to have an independent identity but also share the re-

sponsibility of being a couple. Budgeting expenses: Even if each individual had a budget before the marriage, the financial status of a spouse will change the outlook. Although each person may have their preferences on certain items, talking through the best ways to pool resources and save money can be an effective start to their life together. Estate planning: Just because a couple is relatively young and newly married doesn't mean they shouldn't begin planning for their future - including a family - immediately. Couples should explore the options on life and medical insurance plans. Sitting down with a financial planner can help, and he or she may be able to spell out options in retirement savings or education savings. It's never too early to begin investigating these scenarios. Keep communicating: Money often makes or breaks a relationship. Having similar goals regarding saving and spending is often the key to couples melding together. The best way to work through difficulties and avoid problems concerning finances is always to talk through all of the options. Having an open line of communication about money - and participating equally in the household finances - can help equal marital success.

For most brides-to-be, the choice of a dress is among the first and most important decisions in planning a wedding. With thousands of choices in every price range, finding the perfect wedding dress can be a difficult and time-consuming process. But by making some decisions before setting foot in a store, the search will be both easier and a whole lot more enjoyable. Start by knowing your limits. To avoid disappointment down the line, determine the maximum amount that you can spend on a dress - and don't forget to include all the little extras, such as undergarments, shoes, jewelry, veil, and hair ornaments. Next, take an inventory of your personal style. If you know that you're not comfortable in strapless or sleeveless dresses, for example, you can immediately eliminate these options. The trick is to rule out a few style options before hitting the magazines or stores and then be open to all other options. There will be no shortage of opinions, from mothers, sisters, friends, and store personnel, about your choice of a wedding dress, but the decision, ultimately, is the bride's alone. A great strategy is to be open to suggestions about dresses to try on, but reserve the right to choose the look that feels right to you. With so many

potential options, you might want to consider bringing along a camera and taking photos of yourself in the dresses that could be "contenders." Remember, your goal is to find a dress that flatters your body and expresses your personal style - not to fit into a particular size. If you look ghostly in white, feel free to choose a creamier shade or a dress that has decorative accents of a different color near your neck, shoulders and face. Similarly, there's no rule that a wedding dress has to be floor-length. If you're planning a daytime or more casual wedding, you might want to consider a tea-length dress (one that falls a few inches above the ankle) or go even shorter. Style and fit may be the two most important factors in choosing a wedding dress, but comfort should be a close third. Ask yourself if you will be comfortable in a particular dress given the setting in which your wedding will take place. For instance, if you've always dreamed of an outdoor wedding, you may want forego a dress with a long, trailing train that could trip you up on your walk to or down the aisle. Even if you're planning an indoor event, having a dress and shoes that are as comfortable as they are beautiful will greatly increase your odds of enjoying your special day to the fullest.

Responsibilities of the wedding party As weddings have become less regimented and more expensive, the traditional bridal party is often pared down to a best man and a bridesmaid or two. Their roles, however, have remained constant through the years. Whether the wedding you've got in mind is large or small, formal or casual, conventional or original, it's helpful to have a sense of the roles that bridal party members have played through the years. Maid of Honor: Usually the closest friend of the bride and sometimes a relative. A married, divorced, widowed, or older woman might be called the matron of honor. She assists with the details of the wedding plans, like shopping for the bridal gown, addressing invitations and choosing flowers. She arranges the bridal shower in conjunction with the bride's family, is in charge of coordinating the bridesmaids and organizing fittings, and typically signs the couple's certificate of marriage or wedding license as a legal witness. At the reception, she should stand immediately after the groom in the receiving line. Best Man: Commonly the groom's best friend, relative or not, the best man is in charge of instructing the ushers and coordinating the groom's transportation to the ceremony. He usually holds the rings until the ceremony and will also sign the marriage certificate as a legal witness. At the reception, he holds a place of honor, escorting the maid of honor in the receiving line and in all other wedding party activities. He's also the toastmaster, offering the first toast to the couple. Bridesmaids and Groomsmen: Typically friends or relatives of the bride, bridesmaids may be asked to coordinate special details during the ceremony preparations or at the reception, and assist the bride and the maid of honor. Groomsmen, who, depending on the ceremony, may

Wedding party participants have more responsibilities than simply enjoying a celebratory drink with the new bride or groom. Photo submitted also serve as ushers, should be prepared for an early arrival at the ceremony to escort female guests to their seats. During the ceremony, they will escort the bridesmaids down the aisle. They may also be asked to coordinate the guests' trip from the ceremony to the reception as well as assist the groom and the best man. Flower Girl and Ring Bearer: The flower girl carries a basket of flower petals to sprinkle down the aisle, or flowers to be passed out to the women seated near the
aisle. The ring bearer may either escort the flower girl down the aisle, or follow her, with the rings on a pillow. Father of the Bride: His most conspicuous duty is giving away the bride at the ceremony. He might also fulfill numerous rolls, such as coordinating transportation, dancing and toasting. Traditionally, he and the mother of the bride have paid for the wedding and reception, but today it is common for expenses to be shared by both families along with the bride and groom themselves.

Modern confections enhance weddings Tradition states that wedding cakes are to be tiered masterpieces featuring white cake and white frosting. However, today's modern couples are going in decidedly different directions with their wedding cakes. Often the dessert is as unique as the couple themselves. Wedding cakes can be created to match couples' individual styles and tastes, as well as the color scheme of the wedding. Shapes and sizes can be mixed and matched depending on what the bride and groom envision. Working closely with a skilled cake artist can yield a truly exceptional confection. Here are some ideas for embellishing wedding cakes and making them mirror the personality of the wedding. Consider a different shape other than standard round or square tiers. How about something that ties into your theme, such as a seashell or a sandcastle for a beachside wedding? Many decorating styles are available and you may not have to go with the traditional buttercream icing. Rolled fondant can be cut and shaped into a variety of
embellishments. Talk with the cake designer about his or her specialties in cake design, and ask to see a look-book of past cakes created. Be sure the person whose work you are reviewing will be the actual person doing your cake. Consider matching the flowers in bouquets and table settings on the cake. Skilled decorators can create sugar or piped flowers that rival the look of the real thing. Base the cake on the style of the bride's wedding gown. A cake artist may be able to mimic the look of lace, beading, appliques and more. A photo of the gown may be all the inspiration the professional needs. Who says you need to have vanilla? Today's cakes come in so many flavors, including chocolate fudge, banana, carrot, caramel, pumpkin, and so many more. Ask about the cake flavors and filling offerings. Can't decide? Find out if you can have multiple flavors, where each tier is a different option. Save your appetite. Consider skipping the extensive dessert bar so guests can truly savor your cake.
Have some fun with cake choices at your wedding. Styles, flavors, and shapes are just a few ways you can personalize your cake. Photo courtesy of Brad Bonner

Making memories: Unique ways to pop the question Many people, men and women alike, are on the prowl for unusual and memorable ways to propose marriage to their loved ones. The proposal can be simple, with just the two of you and a few props, or it can be based on an elaborate scheme requiring complex planning and numerous accomplices. The key to a successful, out-of-the-ordinary marriage proposal is the element of surprise, so fitting a proposal into "normal" or everyday activities helps to keep your intended off guard. Here are some ideas that may inspire you to create an enduring and treasured memory for decades to come. Public performances If you're feeling brave and are fairly sure the answer will be "yes," consider popping the question in front of hundreds, if not thousands of onlookers. Ask while at the movies, on the big screen! Some movie theaters have repeating advertising slides before the previews that can be purchased. If you're sports fans, let the scoreboard do the talking or make arrangements with the public address announcer at a sporting event. Skywriting or a plane flying a banner is an old-fashioned and romantic way to propose. You can both have an intimate and private marriage proposal, while still proclaiming your love to the world. Hang up a series of signs along the road your loved one regularly travels on their way to work or school, proclaiming your love and spelling out your inten-
tions while you wait by the last sign with a ring. The game of love Take a chance and make your big move during a quiet evening of playing games or solving puzzles. Purchase a blank jigsaw puzzle and be creative. Work on the puzzle together with the ring ready the moment all the pieces fall into place. A game of charades with family or a few close friends is a perfect way to pop the question without your partner ever seeing it coming. "Four words, the first word sounds like..." There are different ways to spell it out using Scrabble tiles. Secretly pick out the right letters ahead of time and spill those special words from your tray, just as your partner reaches into the bag of tiles and pulls out a box containing the ring. The great outdoors Being outside, spending time together relaxing and sharing a common interest may be the perfect moment to surprise the one you love with the big question. While out fishing, sailing or at the beach, let your partner discover a bottle you prepared with your proposal message tucked inside. If golf is your game, have an accomplice ahead of you, hiding the ring at the 18th hole. When your intended reaches into the cup to retrieve their ball, you'll be ready with those four magic words, "Will you marry me?"
Whether going the traditional route or thinking up something more creative, men and women have numerous options by which to propose marriage. Consider who you are as a couple when proposing, and make it a unique memory to last your entire lives. Photo courtesy of Brad Bonner

Simple steps to change to your married name After a bride says "I do" to a life with her new husband, she often says "I do" to a new last name. Whether she takes the name as a loving gesture, to make it more convenient when having kids, or simply to rid herself of an unappealing maiden name, changing her surname will require some steps to ensure the legality of a change in identity. Because a name change will require a copy of the marriage certificate - something that isn't often obtained until after the ceremony - it's best to wait until after you've returned from a honeymoon to change documentation. Also, in order to travel, you may require birth certificates, passports, a license, or another form of identification. It will be impossible to change all of those forms of identification before the wedding. Inconsistent documentation could cause hang-ups in the travel process. Additionally, you may be charged if you try to change your name on airline tickets after they've already been issued. Therefore, enjoy your maiden name a little longer until the honeymoon bliss is over and it's back to reality. Ready to get started? Here are most of the documents you'll need to change as you take on your new married name. 1. Social Security Card: If you are a U.S. resident, you will need to go to your local social security office, or download a form from the IRS Web site to apply for a change of name on your social security card. It takes approximately 10 days after the application is received for the IRS to update the records. 2. Drivers license: In order to change your drivers license and vehicle registration, you'll likely have to visit the driver’s license station. You will need several forms of identification, two of which will be your marriage cer-

tificate proving change of name and your social security card. Also have your old driver’s license with you. 3. Passport: If the passport was issued less than a year ago, your name may be changed by filling out a form with a certified copy of the marriage certificate attached. If the passport was issued more than a year ago, you will have to start all over if you want to change the name on your passport. Another option is to carry a certified copy of your marriage certificate with your passport to show the name change and the difference between the name on your passport and your driver’s license. County recorders offices have the necessary forms to fill out, or go online to travel.state.gov. 4. Insurance policies: If you have health insurance, life insurance, or a 401(k) plan, you should communicate your change of name to the respective companies. 5. Bank accounts: Guests will likely issue gift checks in your married name or as a couple. It helps to have an account available in which to deposit those checks. You can choose to merge your banking accounts once married, or open up a joint account with your new name. 6. Employer: Have your employer change your name in their records and update payroll and any other services. You will also want to update e-mail stationery to reflect your new name and have your IT director change your information for computer logins and e-mail addresses. A courtesy e-mail to clients will fill them in on your name change. 7. Credit card and utility companies: Notify these companies of a change of name. Some may require written documentation to complete the change. 8. Wills and other legal contracts: Have legal documents amended to feature your updated name. You may want to change your beneficiary to your spouse.

Themed weddings: Campy or creative? Weddings by Fairy tale wedding or modern twist? Many brides- and grooms-to-be have been thinking about their ideal wedding for years. Some may have strong ideas about wedding ideas, complete with scrapbooks featuring color schemes and wardrobe choices. Themed weddings have grown in popularity - as couples want to do what they can to set their event apart from the scores of other weddings guests have attended. The key to themed weddings is to create a balance between tradition and elements that tie into the theme. This way the wedding is classy instead of over-thetop ... unless, however, over-the-top is what's desired. Decide on your theme: Develop a clear idea of what you'd like the theme to be. Themes can range from tieins to seasons to specific interests, such as sports or hobbies, to a particular color scheme. Once you have a firm concept of your theme, you can plan and shop around it. For the purpose of illustration, let's use a winter theme as an example. Introduce your theme with stationery: Your savethe-date cards or wedding invitations will present the theme to your guests, and could be the building block for the entire wedding. A winter-themed wedding may feature a whimsical font of swirly patterned type evoking the feel of winter wind. Delicate polka-dots could hint at falling snow. Avoid snowmen and ski boots. Keep it simple: A winter theme may be achieved simply with color. Draperies, flowers, seat covers, table linens, in a frosty blue, silver or white will touch upon the feel of winter. There's no need to clutter up the space with nicknacks that make the theme overwhelming. Re-
member, you want the event to still be traditional, with touches of the theme throughout. Choose an accent: There may be one concept of your theme that you'd like to build upon, such as snowflakes. However, instead of paper snowflakes hanging from the ceiling, which would be more reminiscent of a classroom instead of a reception room, think about other subtle ways to incorporate the accent. Delicate doilies under the china could hint at snowflakes. Italian pizzelle cookies dusted with powdered sugar look like snowflakes and are very tasty. Instead of Jordan almonds in favors, use large nonpareils. Ask the venue to create a signature cocktail that's white and frosty. Rely on flowers and lighting: Flowers, foliage and other natural accents can add a special touch to your wedding. Nature provides so many different hued and shaped flowers that can work effortlessly into your theme. Hydrangea or snowball plants (also called Guelder rose) form large puffs of flowers that resemble snowballs and are aptly named. Delicate alyssum and even the common baby's breath can be tucked into floral arrangements to add a snowflake appeal. Rember the lighting. Lighting is something couples often overlook. Famed party planner David Tutera often uses lighting to set the mood at the events he plans. Changing the color or the scope of the lighting for different parts of your reception can create different moods. Choose festive foods: Foods don't necessarily need to look like themed elements (mashed potato ski slopes). However, you can touch on the theme by using seasonal foods such as winter squashes, hearty foods or seasonal fruits. Creating a theme doesn't have to be ostentatious or evoke feelings of a kids' birthday party. Subtle touches that are cohesive will provide the desired mood.

Tips for choosing a floral plan
Much must be considered when choosing wedding flowers. Photo courtesy of Brad Bonner
Leading up to their big day, couples have much to worry about before they finally get to walk down the aisle as man and wife. The trials and tribulations of planning a wedding is no small task, as even the most minor details must be accounted for. Such is the case with the floral arrangements. Though not a minor detail in any way, preparing a wedding day floral arrangement does have its minor details, particularly when it comes to the more individual aspects of a floral plan. For instance, the following components must be considered when devising a floral plan. The bridal bouquet. It's tradition for bridal bouquets to contain white or cream-colored flowers such as stephanotis, roses, orchids, or lilies. Many bridal bouquets also include fillers like baby's breath as well as some green or ivy, as well as ribbons or additional accessories. Bouquets for attendants. Attendants' bouquets should be identical, and it's best to coordinate these bouquets with the attendants' gowns. Only the maid of honor traditionally receives a

slightly different bouquet, as it's customary to give her one apart from the rest, though not significantly so. Boutonnieres for groomsmen and ushers. The guy's side of the wedding also needs to take part in the floral plan. Worn in a buttonhole or lapel, a boutonniere should be worn on the left lapel and match a flower from the bridesmaids' bouquet. The groom should also wear a boutonniere, though his should match a flower from the bride's bouquet. When wearing boutonnieres, men should not wear additional accessories such as pocket squares. Flowers for special guests. Certain special guests, such as grandmothers and mothers, should receive corsages. While the corsages do not need to be identical, they should match the bridesmaids' bouquets. It's best to consult with a florist for a corsage color that matches all dresses, as typically the corsages must be ordered before the bride and groom know what their mothers, grandmothers and other special guests will be wearing. A corsage that goes with anything, therefore, is ideal.
