Some seniors embracing new communication technology MIKE BROWNLEE Staff Writer mike.brownlee@nonpareilonline.com (712) 325-5732

E-what? That texting thing. The Internets. Sky where? These are among the phrases you won’t hear uttered by seniors who have embraced the advance in communication technology. Eighty-eight year old Una Kimball said, “I love it” when asked about email. “I love that I can communicate with my grandchildren and great grandchildren,” she said, noting that she has family in Louisiana, Georgia and New Jersey. In an interview at The Center, 714 Main Street, Kimball said she’s been able to watch her family grow through pictures and notes sent via email. “I enjoy the pictures, love that I can see what they get for Christmas, see what they’re doing,” Kimball said. Kimball also visits her 10-year-old great-grandson’s webpage, where she reads the stories he’s written. Lois Turner – Kimball’s daughter and Fitness Director at The Center –said the pair will soon set up a Skype account to video chat with family as well. But when it comes to communicating with her friend Ledell down in Louisiana, Kimball sticks to a communication mode she’s used

since she was young – the letter. Not that Kimball wants to, though. “I tell her she should get e-mail,” Kimball said. One communication advancement Kimball isn’t on board with, yet, is Facebook. “Listen,” she said. “If I can manage e-mail, that’s enough.” The impetus for Kimball’s foray into the world of computers was about 18 years ago, Turner said. Turner, her siblings and other family would communicate via e-mail, then Turner would mail the correspondences to Kimball, who lived in Louisiana at the time. “I said, ‘I’m sick and tired of waiting, put me on the e-mail,’” Kimball said. And so it was done. As the years have passed and she and others have moved, Kimball said she doesn’t see people in person near as much as she used to. “But I’m still part of their lives, thanks to email,” she said. Also at The Center, Jim and Barbara Boeck said they also love communicating with family scattered across the country via e-mail. They both have a Facebook page, too, setup with help from their grandson and daughterin-law. Barbara said she checks hers every day and keeps up with her email once or twice a week.

Una Kimball, 88, keeps in touch with out of town relatives through e-mail.

“It’s good to stay connected,” Barbara said. Texting keeps Keebie Kessler connected. “Up until this year, I coached baseball. If I wanted to communicate with my players, I had to learn to text,” he said. “Their parents got them unlimited texting minutes for their cell phones, but not unlimited calls.” So Kessler embraced the communication method, which also allowed him to stay in more frequent contact with his grandkids. “The only problem is it takes so long to get a

message out with texts,” he said. “What can be done in a two-minute phone call takes 10 texts.

But I like it because you can get communicating done without bothering anyone.”

Seniors who find the Internet intimidating may find a class at the Council Bluffs Public Library helpful. The class, “Internet Made Simple for Seniors,” meets Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m. at the library, 400 Willow Ave. The free class will continue until June. The class is the result of a collaborative project between West Central Community Action and Senior Service America called the Digital Inclusion Program. “The Digital Inclusion initiative is a free program to all adults 55 or older,” a course description states. “Its goal is to help older adults who do not know how to use a mouse to be able to – and want to – use the Internet for their own reasons at libraries, senior centers and other locations in their communities that provide free access to the Internet. “As these older adults increase their use of the Internet, we hope to reduce their isolation and promote lifelong learning, which may lead to improvements in their physical and emotional well being.” West Central and Senior Service America have partnered to offer the class, said Mindy McCollough, reference

Important news on changes to Medicare A variety of changes await Iowans on Medicare in 2011. Kris Gross from the state of Iowa’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program says, “The following is a list of important information to read and share with anyone you know on Medicare.” First, don’t miss comparing Medicare drug plans for 2011. “Everyone should do a comparison of plans because of the changes plans have made for 2011,” comments Gross. “We say „compare or pay’ because plan changes include changes in the drugs covered, premiums, deductibles and co-payments.” You could end up in a plan, which doesn’t meet your needs if you don’t compare plans. If you need assistance comparing plans, call SHIIP at (800) 3514664 (TTY (800) 7352942). There’s good news for anyone who hits the Part D coverage gap in 2011. Health reform included a provision, which starts closing the gap next year. Brand name drugs will have a 50 percent discount in the gap and generic drugs will get a 7 percent discount. Starting in 2011, the Medicare Advantage “open” enrollment period is being replaced with a “disenrollment” period. From Jan. 1 to Feb. 14 you can disen-

ments for 2011. The Part B annual deductible will be $162. The inpatient hospital deductible will be $1,132. Co-payments for hospital days 61-90 will be $283/day and $566/day for the lifetime reserve days. Skilled nursing care co-payments will be $141.50 per day for days 21-100. The Part B premium for 2011 is $115.40 for anyone new to Medicare in 2011 and anyone who does not currently have the Part B premium withheld from their

roll from a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare. If you make this change you can also enroll in a Medicare Part D plan. You will not be able to change to a different Medicare Advantage plan, as was the case in past years. If you want a Medicare Advantage plan for 2011, it is important that you enroll in the best plan for your situation by December 31, 2010. Medicare also recently announced the Medicare premiums, deductibles and co-pay-

Social Security check. Because there has not been a Social Security cost of living increase the past two years, anyone who has had their Medicare premium withheld from their Social Security check in 2010, will pay the same premium in 2011 that they paid in 2010. If you have questions

about Medicare, contact SHIIP, a free, confidential service of the state of Iowa. Counselors are available across the state to help you with Medicare questions and problems. For the SHIIP site nearest you call (800) 351-4664 (TTY (800) 735-2942) or go to www.therightcalliowa.gov.
