The Council Bluffs Senior Center opened in 2002. The nonprofit organization had 500 members. Today, the Center has more than 2,000 members, program director Barb White said. White believes one reason the Center is so popular is because “We offer over 90 classes a week.” Many of these classes address exercise and health issues and White said new classes will be introduced for 2011. “We’ll start a “Biggest Loser” program Jan. 3. If you work, there’s a class on Monday nights at 6:30 p.m. If you don’t, there are classes Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8:30,” White said. Beginner-level Pilates program will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. starting Jan. 4, as will a new aerobics class to be offered at 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Popular classes now include line dancing, aquatics sessions and Zumba, which allows participants to exercise to Latin music. “Tai chi is still very popular, too,” White said, so beginner-level tai chi classes are in the works. More line-dancing classes are scheduled, too, including what White described as “ultra-beginner line dancing” sessions to start Monday, Jan. 3, 1:30 p.m., and a “line dancing challenge” for advanced

dancers starting Tuesday, Jan. 4, 6:30 p.m. “Every four months, we review our offerings and try to offer new classes,” White said. The Center decisions are made based on “what’s popular and what people ask for,” she added. Those classes help improve the health and the overall quality of life for seniors in Council Bluffs. Programs and activities bring people out to meet other people while keeping them physically and mentally active. The Center’s dances have become a popular way to meet new people and keep in touch with old friends. “People are more in tune with exercise today, but they can get bored, so we try to challenge them with new classes. It motivates them,” White said. Anyone 18 or older can take classes, and fees depend on someone’s ability to pay, based on a sliding scale that takes into consideration a number of factors. “Our policy is that no one is turned away because of an inability to pay,” said Tom Jensen, The Center’s executive director. About 300 of The Center’s members are on free or greatly reduced memberships.

An exercise room at The Center offers one way to stay fit. Other activities range from Zumba and Pilates to tai chi and line dancing as well as aquatics classes.

As the population of Council Bluffs ages, the services provided by The Center have become increasingly important. Jensen said the financial assistance program has brought more frail elderly to The Center. Local health professionals also regard The Center as a step in rehabilitation and wellness for patients who are no longer eligible for insurance-provided rehabilitation. Jensen said staff at The Center works with seniors with conditions that include hip and knee replacements, high cholesterol, obesity, fibromyalgia, pain management, diabetes, stroke, arthritis, bal-

ance issues, depression, back problems and poor nutrition. The Center also draws members because it offers the community’s only warm-water pool, and has updated exercise equipment that allows easier access by seniors with chronic health conditions. “The longer they exercise, the longer they stay active and independent in

their homes,” White said. Other classes that do not involve exercise range from arts and crafts to computer training, as well as digital photography, language classes and music instruction. Alegent Health’s new program to help shed pounds life,” she said. “We talk about a new way.” Participates are urged to eat more healthy fruits and vegetables, and grains, she said. “Potatoes are okay, peas are okay, corn is okay,” Lassek said. But, there’s more. The educators help the participants with a new mental attitude, she said. It’s so easy for people to get off their program for “one day” so as to enjoy higher calories foods that might be available at special occasions like parties or wedding receptions, she said. Participants are told to eat their healthy diet

Alegent Health has a program that wants to get rid of something – excess weight. The results have been positive. “We’ve seen patients lose 20 to 200 pounds,” said Kristyn Lassek. She is the coordinator of a health management program in which Alegent Health Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs is involved. The program offers customized diets and exercise plans, weekly meetings, indiviualized coaching and long-term maintenance support. “The program is meant to be long term,” Lassek said. The participants keep simple records of their weight loss and use their data to create goals they share with at the weekly meetings with the health educators. The meetings last about 90 minutes that feature one-on-one consultation with the health educators. There’s even a midweek call to the educators for even more accountability. After the weight-loss phase, participates attend weekly group sessions where they continue to receive support while practicing simple strategies for successful long-term weight management. A

before going to those occasions so as not to be so hungry, Lassek said. This weight maintenance phase can last up to 18 months or longer. “We expect our patients to adhere to the structure,” Lassek said. Altogether, there are 275 people participating in this program in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area, including 50 at the Alegent Health Mercy, she said. This program has been available at Alegent since 2005 and was inspired by a doctor who had weighed up to 400 pounds and lost half of that, according to Lassek. • Spacious 1 & 2 Bedroom Units Available Now

January brings many activities to local senior centers Lakin Senior Center The Lakin Senior Center is a great versatile facility for seniors to enjoy regular daily card playing, bingo and great socialization. We are privileged to have more and more seniors joining our group. On Tuesday evening, November 23, 2010, about 40 seniors from the Lakin Senior Center were guests of the Boys and Girls Club for a delicious traditional Thanksgiving dinner prepared and served by Mrs. Freze, the food service director, who together served approximately 300 meals. We want to express our thanks to her and her crew for a wonderful dinner. Other invited guests for the festive event were organizations within the Lakin Social Service Campus, staff, families and clients. Our thanks, again, to the Boys and Girls Club and especially to their director, Kelly Sears, and her staff. It was a great event to have the seniors and the kids and their families from the Boys and Girls Club come together for a memorable Thanksgiving Feast! Harlan Senior Center Hi from the Harlan Center, Wow the New Year is here. We are certainly hoping for a better beginning weather wise than 2010. Now

that the Holidays are over we can get back to our normal schedule or at least what we think is normal. The new electronic sign for the

Therklidsen and Senior Center is wonderful. How nice to drive down 7th and see our daily activities on display. The sign is in memory of

Opal Therklidsen Peavlor and was donated by her son and the Senior Center contributed also. The Center activities for the

month of January are the usual crafts held Mondays and Fridays 9 a.m. and Wednesdays 9 CENTERS/See Page 7
