Bob Barr got involved and lost it. “I went from 206 pounds to 176,” he said recently. Wilma Clemsen also does it and helps her with a very special activity. “Lifting up my grandson is now easier,” she said. They and many other seniors have found the benefits, physically and socially, of exercising. “You get to meet people and make friends,” Clemsen said. “It builds up your bones and helps you sleep better.” There are many ways seniors can stay in shape, according to Council Bluffs YMCA fitness instructor Linda Robicheau. “Lifting weights helps to increase bone density and preventing osteoporosis,” she said. This form of exercise tones up the body and turns excess fat into muscle, she said. That can be important for such things as picking up their ever-growing grandchildren, Robicheau said. Free weights, like those used for arm curls, can be effective, according to Robicheau, but it’s so important that proper technique is followed. For example, the body, especially the upper part, must be straight and not rocking back and forth when doing

arm curls. “If you don’t have proper alignment, you’re not working the muscles properly. You’re not going to get what you want to get out of it.” Weights, however, aren’t the only method to tone up the body. Many have a ball by gripping a ball and squeezing it tightly. “It tightens the core

muscles, which are the chest on down to the stomach,” Robicheau said. Seniors also take part in Body Vive, a lowimpact workout using balls, stretch tubes and hand weights. Body Pump uses motivating music to deliver an athletic-based workout using barbells with adjustable weights to

work every major muscle group. “Each song focuses on different muscle parts,” Robicheau said. Other popular exercises for seniors, she said, include pilates,

yoga and tai chi, a centuries old Chinese practice designed to exercise the mind and body through a series of gentle, flowing postures that create a kind of synchronized dance.

Seniors embracing ancient recipe for wellness TIM JOHNSON Staff Writer tjohnson@nonpareilonline.com (712) 325-5750

“The ancient art of tai chi uses gentle flowing movements to reduce the stress of today’s busy lifestyles and improve health.” The Mayo Clinic, like many fitness centers, advocates practicing the Chinese exercise because of its potential health benefits, as that statement from the clinic’s website shows. In Council Bluffs, The Center, 714 S. Main St., promotes tai chi as part of its fall prevention program and currently offers two beginning, one intermediate and three advanced tai chi classes, said Diana Elkins, tai chi instructor at The Center. Students range in age from 50 to 80-plus, she said. “It improves strength, balance and flexibility, and it’s, of course, been practiced in China for thousands of years,” she said. “It benefits people with arthritis, high blood pressure, stress relief. It is an exercise that brings greater awareness to the body and how it moves.” Tai chi helps build strength and confidence in older adults who may be more likely to fall, Elkins said. “They go about their daily activities without fear of falling,” she said. “You build a lot of strength in your legs

especially but also in the upper body, because you are doing upper body movements. But the biggest thing is the balance.” It is helpful to people who suffer from arthritis, Elkins said. “One of my girls had such a good report when she went through a rheumatoid arthritis doctor that the doctor, she has started recommending to her patients to take tai chi,” she said. The Arthritis Foundation also recommends that people with arthritis take it, she said. The Council Bluffs YMCA offers “Tai Chi Movement Improvement” classes, and Emanuel Lutheran Church offers free Tai Chi classes Mondays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The classes are open to the public.

Our Merrymakers entertainer for February was Mr. Memory, Joe Tayor. He sang the songs we love from the forties and fifties. In March we will have the talent of Kim Eames, the vivacious singer and guitarist on Thursday, the 10th at 1:00 p.m. You may make reservations by Wednesday the 9th at 11 a.m. by calling the center at 482-3353. Our thanks to the Iowa West Foundation for making these musical professionals available to us. On Feb. 14th we held our Valentine’s Day Party. Winners of our Famous Pairs Contest were Irene Skank, Alce Carsten, June Mathews, and Laura Rose. The Presidential Trivia game was won by Sarah Gene Kenyon, June Mathews, Lilly Palmer, and Laura Rose. The Candy Bar Quiz was won by Lois Krueger, Srah Gene Kenyon, Lee Knudsen and Neuonia Timberman. Dan Barnett, Lois Krueger and June Mathews tied for first in our Card Toss Game. Many thanks to Francis Rollins, Dan Barnett, Betty Cleaveland, Bob Calhoon, Neuonia Timberman and Lilly Palmer for wrapping the tableware for the Oakland Aquatic Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser. This service project benefited the bathhouse renova-

tion. Our sincere condolences to the family of Roman Smith. Roman was an active member of the Senior Center for many years and she will be missed. Memorial money was donated to the Center that will be used to purchase needed equipment. Oakland Foods has graciously donated $500.00 to the Center to be used for a field trip, a holiday party and entertainment. Thank you! In our Super Bowl Contest the Packers were the overwhelming favorite. Those taking home the “trophy” included Lilly Palmer, Frances Rollins, Bud Godden, Bob Calhoon, Audrey Hartje, Betty Cleaveland, Carol Godden and Lee Knudsen. The City of Oakland has done an outstanding job in keeping our parking plowed during the snow-covered days. Our neighbor and faith meal driver, John McCowen has done an excellent job in snow blowing in front of our building. On February 10th, we had a very memorable education presentation by heart transplant candidate Gene Moniz, on his cardiac experience thus far. Valuable information was conveyed and a lot of questions were asked. The superintendent of Riverside School District, Jim Sutton, explained the upcoming school bond issue to be

held on April 5th and answered questions the group had concerning this measure. On February 17th we ate our dinner for breakfast (since it was a breakfast menu), and went to the local café and had our dessert for dinner. Please join us for food, fellowship, cards and much more at the Oakland Senior Center. Please remember we deliver meals to the homebound, Monday through Friday. March is the month for Ash Wednesday on the 9th, daylight savings on the 13th, the luck of the Irish and St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th and the first day of Spring is March 20th. Until next time, Happy Trails to you. Woodbine Senior Center Hi everyone! How is everything going? I’m tired of snow so I’m looking forward to spring! Please hurry up and get here. The groundhog had to break through the ice and then the snow

(about 2 feet) so by the time he did all of that, he had a very bad headache and was just so tired (of snow and winter) that when they told him to look he closed his eyes. That’s why he never saw his shadow! In February, for birthday day, we had the second graders come to the center and sing for us. There were Great with a capital G! If other senior centers can get your grade school kids to come and do that, please do, because they will sing for you and give you a great performance. I think it gave them pride to come do it. We asked them back for March, when they could work it into our schedule. The

seniors were still talking about the kids the next day and that they wanted more programs like that. March is for shamrocks and little green dressed people and green means spring! IN March we have Rose Heistand coming to play for us with her white accordion. That is on March 10. Nutrition talks on March 9th, 15th, and 24th. Continuing education talks on March 11 and 17th. Wellness talks on March 3rd, 16th, and 23rd. Brown Bag Bingo is on March 4th and 18th. Chef Charles on March 22th. And hopefully Toe clinic on March 16th and Blood Pressure Clinic on March 23rd.

Iowa Senior Medicare Patrol Monthly: News you can use New Medicare Benefits in 2011: Working to Lower Your Future Medical Costs In light of a new emphasis on better Medicare coverage of preventive services, Medicare has a new brochure for Medicare beneficiaries called, “Your Guide to Medicare’s Preventive Services.” The Affordable Care Act made several improvements to Medicare coverage and this book explains those changes. For people who’ve just started original Medicare in the last 12 months, a no cost “Welcome to Medicare” physical is available. (There is no cost if the doctor accepts “assignment.”) This benefit is a great opportunity for you to: ■ Check with your doctor about future screenings you should have based upon yours and your family’s medical history. Your doctor can inform you which screening tests you’d be eligible to receive at no cost because Medicare pays the full bill. ■ Make certain your immunizations are up to date. ■ Review the medications and over-thecounter drugs you are taking. ■ Your doctor will check your vitals, calculate your body mass index and give you a simple vision test. For people who’ve been on Medicare more than one year, in 2011

medically necessary. When it comes to medical services that are referred to as “free,” the Senior Medicare Patrol wants to remind you to be cautious. If someone promises they are providing “free” health care in exchange for your Medicare number, think twice! Make certain the medical provider is known by you, that you know exactly what services are being provided and be certain to watch for your Medicare Summary Notice to see that Medicare pays only for exactly what you had done and no more. Request your free copy

you can begin to receive a yearly “wellness exam” which is fully paid by Medicare if your doctor accepts assignment. This doctor visit would include a review of your medical history, your medications, listing all other physicians you are seeing, making a schedule for future screenings you should have and a plan to monitor your health. Remember, your doctor may decide to do a more in-depth exam or order tests during this visit that may not be part of the no cost exam, but would be covered under usual Medicare payment rules if they are

How much does health care hit your wallet? It’s not news to anyone that you spend a lot of money on Medicare and other health insurance premiums as well as deductibles, co-payments and services that Medicare doesn’t cover. Well, here are some figures for you. The average annual out-of-pocket

expenses for beneficiaries in original Medicare is $3,103. If you have one or more of the most common chronic conditions, you spend more. For instance: ■ High blood pressure – $3,352 per year ■ Diabetes – $3,224 per year ■ Osteoporosis – $3,698 per year ■ Congestive heart failure -$3,705 per year Because many people spend a great deal outof-pocket for health services these numbers remind us that we need to protect Medicare from SMP/See Page 11

We can guard our Medicare card like we do our credit cards or

checkbook so thieves can’t steal our identities and bill Medicare for fake charges. If something looks wrong on your Medicare Summary Notice, call the medical provider listed on the statement and ask for information. If you are not able to resolve your question, contact Senior Medicare Patrol at (800) 423-2449 or local AAA. The information for

INTERNET MADE SIMPLE FOR SENIORS

The Digital Inclusion Initiative is offered by West Central Community Action and was created by Senior Service of America through a grant from the Department of Labor. The program is available to all adults 55 or older, and so far we have had over 175 participants in southwest Iowa since the program began last year. The program is currently funded through June 30, 2011. Sessions are self-paced and held in smaller more personalized groups. The sessions are free and there are no limits to the number of sessions you can attend. Everyone who completes the program will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment.

Digital Inclusion sessions are held at four sites in SW Iowa. For information call Aaron or Ivy at 712-755-5135 or call each location’s community outreach phone number shown below.
