Farmers market vouchers for seniors Southwest 8 Senior Services is pleased to announce that the state is continuing the Farmers Market voucher program for senior citizens.

This is a program where seniors meeting income requirements can obtain vouchers that they can use at participating area farmers markets to buy $30 worth of fresh, locally grown produce.

Applications for the vouchers will be available at local senior centers the week of May 24.

The application guarantees you a booklet, but there is a limited number, those interested should contact their local senior center if they are interested in these vouchers.

Council Bluffs residents can pick up an application for the vouchers starting on May 24 at The Center and the distribution date is Thursday, June 17 from 9 to 11 a.m.

Seniors (age 60 and older) in all other communities in Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie and Shelby counties will receive

their vouchers through their local senior center after June 16.

Program Criteria: Must be at least 60 years of age or older. Annual income must be less than $20,036 for singles

Making sense of health care reform The two health care reform laws signed into law March 2010 will lead to significant changes and opportunities for people on Medicare.

“The regulations to implement these laws will be written over the next several years so details are limited at this time,” says Kris Gross from the State of Iowa’s Senior Health Insurance Information Program.

“We can share some of the highlights of the changes coming in 2010 and 2011 however,” she adds.

One of the 2010 changes will begin to close the Medicare Part D coverage gap or “doughnut hole.” A onetime $250 rebate will be paid to individuals who enter the coverage gap in 2010.

This rebate will be distributed quarterly, but the specific distribution process has not yet been announced. Individuals who are eligible for the Part D extra help will not receive the rebate because they do not have a coverage gap.

The coverage gap will continue to close in 2011.

Effective January 1, 2011, drug manufacturers will provide a 50 percent discount on brandname drugs when a person enters the coverage gap. A seven percent discount on generic drugs will be provided by the government for those who fall in the gap.

Important changes are

coming for Medicare preventive services next year.

Cost sharing (deductibles and coinsurance) will be eliminated for most Medicarecovered preventive and screening services. An annual wellness visit will also be covered every 12 months. This visit will focus on a personal risk assessment and prevention plan.

Another change coming at the beginning of 2011 is a new Medicare Advantage disenrollment period the first 45 days of the year. This replaces the current Medicare Advantage open enrollment.

The disenrollment period will allow individuals enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan to return to Original Medicare and enroll in a stand-along Part D drug plan if desired.

Details about many other Medicare Advantage changes will be available in the upcoming months.

The Medicare website,

www.medicare.gov, includes a section on its homepage called “What’s New?” The “Latest on Health Care Reform” is included in this section.

As the weather heats up, so do SWI events Harlan Senior Center Hi from the Harlan Center. We had a busy month of May including 2 presentations that were great one was on storms by Mike Jensen with Emergency Management and the other

by Sr. Linda Zahner, LMT EEMCP on the benefits of massage therapy for Seniors and also energy exercises.

She also gave shoulder massages, which were absolutely wonderful.

The Volunteer Brunch was well attended and everyone enjoyed the entertainment by the group of students from Shelby County Catholic Schools under the direction of Sara Early. The June events at the Center include the usual activities of Crafts held Monday and Fridays at 9 a.m. Wednesdays finds the Wii Game Morning at 9 a.m. and Bingo played at 1:15 p.m. Fridays is Exercise time at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 1 will be 9 a.m.

Exercise Time. Tuesday, June 8 at 9:30 a.m. is Movie Morning with The Video Place and HyVee. The Alzheimer’s Support Group will meet that afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, Senior Council meeting beginning at 9:30 a.m. and The Birthday & Anniversary Party to start 6 p.m. there will be blood pressure checks and entertainment by The Goldenairs. Monday, June 14 we’ll have a flag pro-

gram at the noon meal.

Tuesday, June 15 at 9 a.m. Exercise time and 5 p.m. The Life After Loss Support Group will have a meal meeting. Blood Pressure checks will be held from 11:15 a.m. to noon on Thursday, June 17. The men will be honored on Friday the 18th at the noon meal. Tuesday, June 22 will be Exercise Time at 9 a.m. and The Farmer’s Market Check distribution beginning at 2 p.m.

StoveCreek Music will provide the entertainment on Thursday, June 24 at the 6 p.m. meal.

Blood Pressure checks will be given before the meal. Exercise time will be held on Tuesday, June 29 at 9 a.m. The Senior Center is a great place to go for fun, good food, conservation and a wealth of information, who knows if you try us you might just like us.

Oakland Senior Center May: We all know May brings graduations but it also celebrates the Older Americans Month.

Just a bit more trivia; May is also National Healthy Vision Month, National Asparagus Month, National Barbecue Month, National Egg Month, National Hamburger Month, National Military Appreciation Month, National Salad Month, National Stroke Awareness Month, and National Vinegar Month. There is quite a variety mentioned as such is the case at the Oakland Senior Center.

Merry Maker’s entertainer for the month of May and, as always, Joe played to an appreciative full house. We thank the Iowa West Foundation for supporting our Center with the Merry Makers Association. June will see Michael Lyon, a singer who is classically gifted and blends in Broadway show tunes in his act, back for a return engagement on Thursday, June 10. Reservations for the 5 p.m. meal, followed by Micheal Lyon performance, can be made by calling the Center at 482-3353 by June 9 at

11 a.m.

During the month of June we have a couple of outings planned but not definite dates as of this writing. Please phone the Center for details.

You will most likely find a game of cards going strong most any day.

smiles on the graduates’ faces are precious. I know some say the smile is because they are out of school but I prefer to think of the smile as a sign that they are happy to met a goal and achieve a dream.

Now they have bigger and better dreams to reach out for and I am so happy for them.

Some of the parties were held here at the center and it makes a fine place for them to meet with their families

and friends.

We had our own party for own Volunteers here and it was enjoyed by those attending.

On June 25th we have our Senior Prom (yes, for us Seniors) and we are looking forward to enjoying this gettogether.

The Senor Site Council has been busy with many and exciting plans for everyone.

Our next big party here at the Center will be the Fourth of July party.

We have good num-

bers at our parties and are looking forward to visiting and seeing everyone again!

The Missouri Valley High School Alumni are meeting here at the facility for their annual get-together.

That is always an exciting time for reminiscing and seeing our old school friends again. And the citywide garage sale begins right here at the building so as you can see, everyone is busy and happy!

If there are benefits paid for medical services or products you did not receive, call Medicare at (800) 6334227. If you have difficulty resolving the problem, call Iowa SMP program at (800) 423-2449 for assistance.

If you cannot receive mail at your usual mailing address, be sure to contact your Postmaster to make alternative arrangements.

Consider signing up for direct deposit for your retirement benefits now.

Call the agencies that send your benefits, to give them your bank routing number and account number.

Be careful of telemarketers and doorto-door salespersons if your home is damaged Scam artists move quickly into and out of the area and know how to tar-

get vulnerable people.

Door-to-door salespeople can be pushy and make you believe you’ll miss out on services or products you need desperately, if you don’t sign up now!

Don’t make a quick decision when someone calls or comes to your door. Ask them how you can re-contact them, ask them for written information and tell them you will think about it. If they are legitimate, they’ll allow you time to consider what you should do.

Don’t fall for donation scams If someone calls, stating

they are from a charity, ask them to send you written information before you send money. Be especially careful of callers saying they are from your fire, police or sheriff’s department; call the department to make sure it’s a legitimate fundraiser before you donate.

Preventing scams and disputes Spring is here -prime time for home improvement fraud and scams.We see it every year. Home repair needs pile up over the winter, and everyone is eager to make improvements. It’s prime time to beware of scams and questionable contractors.

Home improvement fraud includes contractors who ask for substantial up-front payments, do little or no work, and never finish the job right. Other contractors offer a low price and then charge a lot more as the job progresses. Others are “flyby-night” traveling con artists working their roofing or paving or chimneyrepair scams.

Follow these tips to avoid being taken by home repair scams and disputes: 1. Don’t fall for the “knock-at-your-door” scam, where someone shows up “out of the blue” and says your driveway needs repaving, or your house needs new shingles – and they “just happen to have materials left over” at a big discount! They are sure to take your money and run, without doing the job at all or doing it right.

2. Check out contractors before you sign a contract or pay any money.

3. Get several written estimates, choose the best, and get a contract in writing. Before any work begins, agree on a written contract detailing work to be done, the price, who’s responsible for permits, and any other terms. Ask for a copy of the contractor’s liability insurance certificate. Put start and completion dates in writing, and consequences if the contractor fails to meet them. It usually is safer and a better deal to obtain financing through your local bank or credit union, rather than a contractor. Note: if you sign a contract at a place other than the contractor’s regular place of business – such as at your home – you usually have three business days to cancel the contract.

4. Avoid paying large sums in advance. If you need to make a partial advance payment for materials, make your check out to the supplier and the contractor. Insist on a “mechanic’s lien waiver” in case the contractor fails to pay others for materials or labor.
