Volunteering improves lives of those involved DENNIS FRIEND Staff Writer dennis.friend@nonpareilonline.com (712) 325-5746
People who don’t want to become couch commandos when they retire have other options. Some of the free time that used to be spent at work can now be used to help others. “Oh, my goodness, yes. There is so much need in the community. This would be a great use of their time, and they can help others,” Raeanna Kuzma said. Kuzma is director of volunteers with the United Way of the Midlands, and “I have an email list of volunteer opportunities I send out every two or three weeks.” The amount of time donated can vary by the volunteer. Kuzma said she has volunteers who will sign up for one-time projects. Some will volunteer for one hour a week, others will donate time in the mornings or afternoons, still others will fill their week giving time to several organizations. “The need is out there and it doesn’t cost the volunteer anything,” Kuzma said. To volunteer, call Kuzma at (402) 522-7933 or contact her through rkuzma@uwmidlands.org. She also recommended going to the www.volunteersolutions.org/omaha website. Volunteer Solutions is a site that helps volunteer centers connect individuals to volunteer opportu-
nities in their community. Volunteer Solutions helps volunteers, nonprofit agencies, corporations, event organizers and Volunteer Centers get connected. “There are 500 opportunities listed on that website. There are opportunities all over the area,” Kuzma said. Opportunities to volunteer can range from helping the elderly, tutoring for the Urban League or helping at the Boys and Girls Club or Red Cross. For instance, Meals on Wheels needs drivers willing to deliver hot meals to the elderly in Council Bluffs, according to volunteer coordinator Lori Rankin. “It’s real rewarding. It takes about an hour a day. They use their own vehicles and they deliver as little or as many as they want each day,” Rankin said. The average driver delivers 18 meals and works between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Those interested in helping seniors also might be able to connect with Southwest 8 Senior Services, Amelia House or the Senior Companion Program. The Lifestyle section of the Council Bluffs Nonpareil carries Helping Hands listings every Sunday which are listed by areas of interest. For instance, someone who loves animals may be able to donate time to the Pottawattamie County or Council Bluffs animal shelter. “We look for people to get involved with our off-

site adoptions,” Mary Jones said. She’s with SOLAS at the Council Bluffs Animal Shelter, and said the off-site adoption program for dogs takes place at the Council Bluffs Petsmart on Saturdays from noon-3 p.m. and for cats at the Omaha PetCo
on 72nd and Dodge St. between noon-3 p.m. “We have plenty of help at the animal shelter right now, but we can use foster families for mother cats and kittens, and we always look for people to help write grants,” Jones said.
Other programs are dedicated to helping children, like the Lutheran Family Services; The disabled or handicapped, such as Crossroads of Western Iowa; and office assistance for organizations like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Health Care Hustle! Senior Medicare Patrol/SMP The Federal Trade Commission is concerned that consumers may be duped by companies selling medical discount plans. The FTC calls it the “health care hustle. Here is a message for all of us, directly from the FTC. ■Affordable Health Care Plan. ■Pre-existing conditions? No problem! ■No Deductible or Co-pays. ■Thousands of providers in our PPO network. ■Discounts up to 60 percent. “Claims like these in magazines, on television, or on the Internet may sound like they’re selling health insurance. Probably not. Most of the time, they’re pitching a medical discount plan, card, or program, and chances are, they’re aimed at people who are in the market for ways to reduce the cost of health care. Do you know anyone looking for health insurance? Tell them to make sure that’s what they’re buying, or they could find themselves on the hook for big medical bills with no way to pay them. That’s because what sounds like affordable health insurance may be a medical discount plan instead. Medical discount plans can be a way for some people to save money on their health care costs, but discount
plans aren’t health insurance. Some medical discount plans provide legitimate discounts; others take peoples’ money and offer very little in return. Many plans don’t include local providers or give you outdated lists of names and facilities. Some offers are just plain scams. If you would like more information you can visit the FTC website at www.ftc.gov/medicaldiscountscams. You can also call the FTC toll free at 1-877382-4357 and ask to receive their pamphlet called “Medical Discount Plans: They’re Not Health Insurance. A Tip for Understanding
Medicare Every Medicare beneficiary should look for the new 2011 “Medicare and You handbook to arrive in their mail boxes in late October or early November. This is a very important document! It’s kind of like the insurance policy documents you receive from insurance companies. This book explains your benefits and the new additions to coverage for 2011. It also contains information on the Medicare approved prescription drug plans for Iowa and other information pertinent to our state. After you’ve looked through the handbook, DON’T throw it away!
Delivered RIGHT to YOU
It’s information you may need all year long, so keep it with your important papers so you know where to find it the next time you have a question. Tracking Your Medicare Claims If you’d like a journal you can use to track your medical visits, please ask Senior Medicare Patrol for a free “Personal Health Care Journal. When you receive your quarterly Medicare Summary Notice that tells you what bills Medicare paid for you, compare it
to your journal to make sure Medicare paid the right medical bill to the right medical provider for you. If you think there is a problem, contact the doctor, clinic or hospital to ask your questions. If you are not able to resolve it, contact Senior Medicare Patrol. If you would like to receive a journal from us or need help with a questionable Medicare payment, we can be reached at our toll free number (800) 423-2449 or Claudia Davis, Southwest 8, 328-2540 Ext. 21. – Deb Yankey, Iowa SMP Coordinator

Southwest 8 Senior Services offering two new programs Southwest 8 Senior Services has two new programs we offer to our senior community, which are funded through a grant from the National Senior Service Corp. The Senior Companion Program utilizes our seniors in the community as volunteer companions to senior clients. This enables the client to maintain independent living, while providing
him/her transportation to appointments, accompanying the client on shopping trips, doing light housekeeping, and basically being a companion to the senior citizen. The clients are referred to us by site agencies we have partnered with for this purpose. The Foster Grandparent Program partners senior volun-

October brings many activities to senior centers CENTERS/From Page 6
Stop by and take the tour to see all the available things to do. Come by and see us. The “Seniors Farmers Market” is displayed in the dining room compliments of those who want to share the wealth of their gardens! Oakland Senior Center The summer has gone by so fast and with all the activities at the Senior Center, the days seemed to go that much faster. Our pillow cleaning fundraiser resulted in forty-four cleaner pillows. Thanks to Lee Knudsen for chairing this event. Our bus tour to visit all the existing Eagle Statues honoring our Veterans proved to be a huge success. Residents from Oakland and Carson took the scenic drive to see the completed projects. It was interesting to see how each town interpreted and added to the Eagle to make it more meaningful to their particular area. The artist, Russ Christianson, was our personal tour guide and narrator. Thanks to Kathy, the Neola Southwest 8 Manager, for her idea for this trip. Joan Vallier, R.N. from Hospice, spoke on Pain Management. She is an excellent presenter and the topic was well received.
Carson’s own Laura Rose gave a most interesting talk on her experiences as a truck driver. Many questions were asked and we came away with a better understanding of truck drivers, especially female drivers. The Macedonia Heritage Trails Museum recently opened and volunteer Ruby Bently guided us through this historic building and all its contents. The people of Macedonia have done a marvelous job in restoring the building and collecting items to display. Ruby also was our escort to the Stemple Bird Museum in town, which was interesting. We then headed to the Gristmill Theatre where Board Member Eileen Adickes took us on a behind the scenes tour. Our day was complete with lunch at the Wander Inn in Carson. Our events in October include a hayrack ride and tour of the Three B Apple Orchard in Griswold. This also includes a picnic lunch and snack.
Reservations for this Tuesday, October 3rd outing must be into the Center by Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. Cost of the trip is $10 per person. Circle your calendars for Tuesday, Oct. 12 for a musical afternoon with Johnny Ray Gomez. This ultimate entertainer will perform after the noon meal. Reservations must be made by Monday, Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. On Wednesday, Oct. 13, the Visiting Nurse’s Association will be giving flu shots from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the Senior Center. On Oct. 20 we will be traveling to Neola to tour the artist’s studio of Russ and Penny Christianson, designers of the Veteran’s Eagle Statues. After the tour we will eat at Sweet Gathering’s in Neola. The owner will take us on a tour of the facility and we will see where all that delicious candy and other goodies are made. Reservations must be into the Center by 11 a.m., Oct. 15. Hospice Nurse Joan Vallier, will return once again to the Center to speak on Grief
and Bereavement. Reservations should be made by 11 a.m on Oct. 19. Join us for our Halloween Party on Thursday, Oct. 28 where fun games, food and fellowship await you. Please call the Center by Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 11 a.m to make reservations. Congratulations to our attendance winners: Bob Calhoon, Betty Cleaveland, Bud Godden, Neuonia Timberman, and Audrey Hartje. Prayerful thanks to Francis Rollins for composing such a thoughtful and heartwarming prayer in conjunction with our evening meal. Thanks to Lee Knudson and Audrey Hartje for cheering us with your pre-dinner humor. Congratulations to Irene Skank who was elected President of Carson’s Senior Group, The Friendly Folks.
We would like to thank the Oakland Aquatic Center committee and an anonymous donor that enables us to attend the circus when it came to Oakland. Welcome to the Center, Shirley Phillips, Leona Coleman, Donna Kelly and Ilene Parkhill. Neonia Timberman continues to do a wonderful job with the Rice and Roses column each month. Many thanks to Marie Browning, Gene Moniz, Laura Rose and Irene Skank for delivering meals to Carson. Liz Blatny has generously donated squash, tomatoes, cucumbers and pumpkins to the Center. Many thanks to Liz. Please join us for our up-coming events and our noon meals. You may call for reservations at 482-3353. Keep safe, keep happy and keep coming!

Keeping tabs on health reform changes Q: Did the health reform legislation do anything to improve Medicare preventive benefits? A: Yes, thanks to recent changes enacted by Congress, Iowans on Medicare will have enhanced preventive benefits starting in 2011. This is exciting news for people on Medicare because the changes make preventive services more affordable and accessible. Q: What’s changing? A: Next year, for the first time, Medicare beneficiaries can receive an annual wellness visit. This includes a basic health risk assessment and provides personalized prevention plan services. If you are enrolled in Medicare Part B, one wellness visit will be covered at no cost every 12 months. You must be enrolled in Medicare for more than 12 months to receive this benefit. If you had a “Welcome to Medicare Physical Exam” when you first went on Medicare, the wellness visit has to come at least 12 months after that exam. Q: What was done to make preventive benefits more affordable? A: Starting in 2011 you will no longer pay deductibles and co-payments for many of Medicare’s preventive services. The following preven-
tive benefits will be provided at no cost to individuals who are enrolled in Medicare Part B: “Welcome to Medicare” physical exam, bone mass measurement, mammograms, pap test and pelvic exam, colorectal cancer screening (including a colonoscopy for high risk individuals and flexible sigmoidoscopy) and medical nutrition therapy for individuals with diabetes and kidney disease. Q: What information is available to help me best take advantage of
Medicare preventive services? A: One of the best ways to keep up with the preventive services you are eligible to receive is registering with the My Medicare website (https://mymedicare.gov). This is your personal Medicare website for tracking your Medicare services. It will send you e-mail reminders when you are eligible for Medicare coverage of preventive services. For more information about all of Medicare’s preventive benefits visit
the SHIIP website at www.therightcalliowa.go v and go to the “Medicare” section of the website. The “Manage Your Health” section of the Medicare website (www.medicare.gov) also provides preventive services information. You can also call
SHIIP at (800) 351-4664 (TTY (800) 735-2942) with your questions. SHIIP counselors are available statewide to discuss your Medicare questions. SHIIP is a free, confidential and objective service and does not sell, endorse or promote any insurance products.
