Lewis & Clark Monument Breathtaking. From this high, bluff-top perch, the view west across the Missouri River to Omaha and Eppley Airfield is like no other. And, like several other monuments and memorials on the Iowa side of the river, this topnotch, clean and neat national landmark deserves visitors’ attention. Erected in 1935 to commemorate the July 28, 1804, meeting of Lewis & Clark with members of the Otoe and Missouria tribes, the monument was re-dedicated in 1993 and substantially restored by July 2002. The park, a favorite destination for capable bicyclists, includes a new restroom facility, trails and interpretive information. And that view! Free. Open

WHO

The first major state tax in Iowa was created in 1921 when the state passed a $.02 per package tax on cigarettes. Iowa was the first state to pass a cigarette tax. The cigarette tax remained stagnant until it was bumped to $.03 per pack in 1953. The tax was raised 10 more times until 1991, when it reached $.36 per pack. The tax remained the same until 2007, when it was raised to $1.36 per pack. In 1934 the sales and income taxes were created as property tax relief measures. The first sales tax was 2 percent and income taxes ranged from 1 to 5 percent.

30 FYI Guide 2010

All in a day’s fun CLIMB ABOARD You’ll have to travel the city a bit, but you’ll finish the day with a good understanding of ties that bind. Start at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs, where displays track the development of the railroad and the American West. Next stops: RailsWest Railroad Museum; the Historic General Dodge House; and the Golden Spike Monument, all in the Bluffs. The monument, a concrete semblance of a railroad spike, sits at Ninth Avenue and 21st Street. It was erected for the Omaha premiere of the 1939 film “Union Pacific.” Round out your excursion at Lauritzen Gardens to see the railroad garden, and the locomotives next door at Kenefick Park. The Durham Museum in historic Union Station is another “must” for railroad enthusiasts. You’ll pay admission at some stops. But, hey, it’s worth it!

WALK ACROSS THE BOB We call it “The Bob” or “The Bridge” for short. The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, nearly 3,000 feet long, crosses the Missouri River between Omaha and Council Bluffs. Dedicated in September 2008, it is a must-see for locals and visitors. (If you haven’t ventured downtown in two years, this is your invitation.) Named in honor of former Nebraska U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey, the bridge is popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists. Omaha Plaza at the foot of the bridge has 26 water jets that children can play in during the warm months and a fiber wave sculpture.

Call (402) 330-IMAX (4629) for schedule. PICNIC ON THE BLUFF From the highest point at Lewis & Clark Monument Park, you have an expansive westward view of the Missouri River Valley and the downtown Omaha skyline. The monument honors the expedition of Lewis & Clark in 1804 and their meeting with the Otoe-Missouria Indians. There’s also a mountain bike trail. Open year-round, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Set your GPS for 19962 Monument Road in Council Bluffs.

MEET MOLECULE MAN He’s a 50-foot aluminum sculpture near the entrance of the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs. Molecule Man is part of the Iowa West Foundation’s Public Art Initiative, which includes several monumental pieces in the area. Scheduled for installation this month: Four 70-foot statues by Albert Paley for the 24th Street bridge over Interstate 80-29.
