Parade theme pays tribute to longevity of Glenn Miller Festival Festival performers will participate in trip around square The Glenn Miller Festival features many tributes to the famous bandleader, Alton Glenn Miller. One of these is the Parade. This year the Parade’s theme is “Happy 35th Anniversary – Glenn Miller Festival.” Festival performers and Clarinda businesses join forces to honor Clarinda’s native son. Groups from surrounding towns contribute to the celebration by participating in the parade. Keane Thummel Trucking provides beautiful flat-bed semi-trucks to carry the bands, adding a touch of formality to the event with the drivers decked out in ties and jackets. Antique cars will venture to Miller’s birthplace
to add to the festivities. After the parade, these stunning vehicles will assemble on the south side of Clarinda’s town square for a Classic Car Show. Following the Big Band Breakfast, the parade will be held 9 a.m. Saturday, June 12, on the courthouse square. If you want to participate in honoring Glenn Miller’s contributions to the world, call the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society at (712) 542-2461 before 4 p.m. Friday, June 11. “The ultimate tribute to Miller is the Glenn Miller Birthplace Museum. Fans worldwide have banded together to honor this remarkable musician and patriot with this extraordinary exhibit of memorabilia telling the story of Miller and the Big Band Era,” said Marvin Negley, President of the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society.

5 ‘World Famous’ Glenn Miller Orchestra keeps artist’s music alive June 10-13, 2010
GMO performs more continuously than all other bands Always a favorite around the globe, the World Famous Glenn Miller Orchestra directed by Larry O’Brien keeps the Miller tradition alive. Audiences thrive on the band’s performance of the popular Miller songs as well as some of the lesser known and seldom heard songs. Glenn Miller Orchestra can be enjoyed during the 2010 Glenn Miller Festival, June 10-13 in Clarinda. On the road longer and more continuously than any other Big Band ever, the
Clarinda, Iowa
Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most sought-after Big Band in the world. The entire Glenn Miller Orchestra repertoire now exceeds 1700 compositions that keep the band popular with both young and old. Larry O’Brien became the leader of the GMO in 1988. He has a direct link back to the Glenn Miller sense of performance – he first performed with the Miller band in the early 1960s when Ray McKinley was the bandleader. That the Miller sound still lives on is no surprise to O’Brien: “It seems that good things just don’t ever die. Rather, they age gracefully and mellow with the years,”
O’Brien said. “If anything, I honestly think the authentic Glenn Miller music today is more popular with more people than ever

6 Ballyhoo Foxtrot pays tribute to early days of Miller’s musical career June 10-13, 2010
Highly respected musicians will perform one show Making its first appearance at the Glenn Miller Festival will be the Ballyhoo Foxtrot Orchestra from Des Moines. This eight-piece ensemble employs an instrumentation that enables the group to perform a wide variety of musical genres of the early part of the 1900s. Founded in 2005, the Ballyhoo Foxtrot Orchestra has established its reputation through performances at a variety of venues throughout Iowa including Cedar Basin Jazz Festival in Cedar Falls, Old Settlers
Days in Corydon, Music Under the Stars in Des Moines, Iowa State University alumni events, 20th Annual Ragtime in Randall, Gatsby Gala in Des Moines, concerts for four Des Moines area fine arts series. In 2008 BFO recorded its first CD. Titled “I’m Gonna Jazz My Way,” it features nineteen songs that trace the life story of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald. The eight musicians in BFO are highly respected with experiences ranging from professorships with local universities to awardwinning compositions to backing notable performers such as Doc Severinsen, Vince Gill and Tony

Bennett to performing in Broadway musicals. Prior to being a Swing Era bandleader, Glenn Miller was a trombonist and arranger in a variety of Western territory bands (such as Senter’s Sentapeeds) and New York recording ensembles (The Cotton Pickers, The Charleston Chaser, Louisiana Rhythm Kings). BFO will feature tunes recorded by these ensembles during Glenn’s early years in the music world, such as “’Deed I Do,” “Mississippi Mud,” “Red Hair and Freckles” and “Tiger Rag.” It will be exciting to see another part of Glenn’s career, a side that is not

Many contributed to successful Glenn Miller Birthplace Museum project Local contractors used whenever it was possible to keep funds in Clarinda
Drywalll
The planning and building of the Glenn Miller Birthplace Museum involved numerous people and companies in the community and surrounding area. “When considering the construction of the Museum, we wanted to use as many local contractors as possible,” stated Marvin Negley, President of the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society. “Keeping the funds in the community stimulates
the economy here,” explained Elaine Farwell, Executive Director of the Clarinda Chamber of Commerce. “Every dollar kept in the community turns over seven times, meaning that it circulates through wages or money that is spent at local businesses.” To achieve this goal, bids were taken for various components of the construction and major contractors chosen as follows: Dirt work, footings, concrete work (sidewalks and parking), ICF blocks (Insulated Concrete Forms) – Stickler’s Inc.; Carpentry, painting, roofing, sheeting – King Construction; Brick work
– Bill Edwards; Plumbing and the geothermal heating and cooling system – Nally Plumbing & Heating; Electrical – David Kovar; Security system and fire alarms – Brian Rogers, High Tech Electronics; Polished concrete floors – Kale Plowman; Carpet – The Carpet Store; Landscaping – Justin Walter. Many materials for the building were purchased at Akins. Steel doors and roll-up grill doors are from Maryville Glass and Lock. Some expertise was not available in the immediate area: Architects are BCDM, Des Moines, IA; Soil survey – Terracon, Omaha, NE; Royer Well

Hunter Fuerste and his American Vintage Orchestra to recreate ‘Big Band Era’ Authentic sound will prevail during Big Band Dance Hunter Fuerste and His American Vintage Orchestra will recreate the Big Band Era during the 2010 Glenn Miller Festival, June 10-13. They have performed to sold-out audiences in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin for the last seven years as well as played for dances in ballrooms and for gala celebrations. An accomplished arranger, trombonist and ophthalmologist, Hunter painstakingly transcribed arrangements from the
original 78 records in an effort to get the voicings as accurate as possible. He then rehearsed the musicians at length copying the styles of the original bands and their hits. The band jackets worn by his orchestra were made in Hollywood as authentic recreations of what was worn at the time. The RCA 44 microphone, the microphone of the era, is not just a prop but is used to deliver the warm, smooth sound of the day. During performances at the 2003 and 2005 Glenn Miller Festivals, Hunter Fuerste and His American Vintage Orchestra enthralled audiences. He has conducted orchestras
for many productions at the Grand Theater in Dubuque, Iowa and he directs the Dubuque Brass Quintet which sells out Christmas concerts yearly. Share the Big Band Era with this extraordinary group 4:15 p.m. Friday, June 11, and at the Big Band Dance 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, June 12. Each year Glenn Miller fans from around the world reunite in Clarinda to celebrate the music of this famous Swing Era bandleader. The Glenn Miller Festival is exciting for those who grew up with Miller’s music as well as those who are new to this genre.

Award-winning group ranges from 9 to 18 years of age They’re back! One of our favorites – the Swing Kids from Romanshorn, Switzerland are making their third trip to the Glenn Miller Festival. These award-winning students have developed quite a reputation for themselves. In 2008 Swing Kids won the Swiss Jazz Award from Radio Swiss Jazz and Jazzfestival Ascona. Each year this honor is given to one person or one group that does the most remarkable work for Jazz in
Switzerland. Radio Swiss Jazz is part of their national broadcast association and broadcasts Jazz 24 hours a day. Swing Kids received the title “The Most Beloved Jazz Band in 2008.” Swing Kids’ director, Dai Kimoto, was awarded the Culture Award in 2009 from the State Thurgau where he lives. Swing Kids have been touring not only in Switzerland but also other places around the globe. In October 2008 they spent two very successful weeks performing in Argentina. During 2009 Swing Kids performed in Paris and they made their third

This group has made decisions regarding everything from contractors to materials to carpet as well as pitching in on tasks such as cleaning walls after the concrete floors were polished but before the carpet was laid. Members of the Museum Committee are Gordon Kokenge (Chair), Elaine Farwell, Marvin Negley, Dale McAllister, Jean Negley, Richard Anderson, Lowell Lines, Arlene Leonard, Shira Bridie, Gail Barr, Pat Bogdanski, Chad

The official campaign to collect the funds to build the museum began in 2008. Applications were made for various grants, some of which were received and others weren’t. Donations have come from Miller fans all over the world. This effort is continuing in order to raise funds to complete the museum displays. OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR Governor Chet Culver ★ Lt. Governor Patty Judge To the editor: I enjoyed the Clarinda Herald-Journal article about the Glenn Miller Orchestra and the joy audiences get from the sounds of a bygone big-band era. Best wishes to the GMO as they prepare for the Glenn Miller Festival, a great Iowa tradition. I commend the “World Famous” Glenn Miller Orchestra for keeping the music of this legendary performer and composer alive. Also, congratulations to the Clarinda community on the upcoming grand opening of the Glenn Miller Birthplace Museum. The museum will be a great addition to our state and a fitting tribute to a famous native son. Chet Culver Governor of Iowa

Evensong to round out entertainment for 35th Glenn Miller Festival Local musicians will share their love of music Sunday Many people have talents that have nothing to do with their chosen professions. Such is the case with the members of Evensong. Drawn together because of their shared interest in music, this group’s performers have a variety of careers. Steve Hitt is the percussionist of the group, playing drums and other instruments as well as singing. Ann Hitt, his wife, sings and plays keyboard bass in Evensong. When available, Steve and Ann’s son, Ben, performs the bass and
sings. Tom Ives has been playing the string bass in the GMBS Big Band for about 19 years. He’s also a vocalist with the Clarinda Sings choir that performs each fall. Tom handled the recordings of two local musicians, George McGargill and Ben Green. He has played in a variety of groups ranging from country to ones similar to Crosby, Stills and Nash. Tom’s profession is in Information Technology at Lisle Corporation in Clarinda. Barb McAndrews is a classically trained vocalist and has a reputation of being an excellent soprano. Ann Wilson works at Lisle
Corporation. She met the Hitt family through singing at church and is now a vocalist with Evensong. Paul Negley, eldest son of GMBS President Marvin
Negley, plays keyboard and sings with Evensong. At the Festival’s Stage Show you can hear Paul as he “tickles the ivories” with the GMBS Big Band.
Evensong is well known and has performed at sorority benefits, for the local Habitat for Humanity fundraiser and at the Clarinda Relay for Life.
