When it comes to fashion, many strive to find the unique, that something that they haven’t seen others wearing or doing or carrying or using. Heather Wollan, owner of Pursenickety, an in-home purse sales company, is tapping into that market. “It’s a piece of your wardrobe that you can be unique with,” Wollan said. “People like to have fun, unique purses.” Wollan provides the goods for purse parties, bringing about 100 purses, along with jewelry and women’s wallets, to homes, by appointment. “If people want to host a party I’ll bring purses to their house and set up,” she said. “From there, people just shop from them. It’s a more personal and laid back experience.” Wollan will have her purses in tow at Ladies Night Out, including bringing some of the latest trends in the item women look to for storage of everything they need. The Daily Nonpareil will hold its annual fall Ladies Night Out on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the Mid-America Center. The event runs from 5 to 8:30 p.m. “There’s a lot of oversized flowered handbags (this season),” Wollan said. “Also, right now it’s all the fall colors.” In terms of purse style, Wollan said cross-body handbags are “really popular right now.” At Ladies Night Out, she said, “I’ll have them all available.” With an economy still in slowdown mode, she said she knows women are cutting back. Purses can get pricey, pushing $100 and beyond in the higher stratosphere brands. She said most, if not all, of her purses are $40 or less. “I try to keep my prices low,” Wollan said. Wollan opened Pursenickety in August of this year and has seen business take off since. She said that she schedules purse parties two to three nights a week. October is booked already and calls are coming in for November. “I’m getting busy,” she said. By day, Wollan works for Alegent Health, meaning the purses keep an already busy woman busier.

Heather Wollan operates her own business, Pursenickety, out of her home in Underwood. Wollan will be one of the many vendors at Ladies Night Out this year. “It takes a lot of time, commitment and dedication,” Wollan said of her business. “I’ve learned it takes a lot of flexibility.” Wollan learned the trade during her time with Arm Candy, a purse-party business, and from its owner, Bonnie Russell, before opening Pursenickety.

Russell, who also works full time elsewhere, stills operates Arm Candy, but with a reduced staff and schedule. She explained some of the key elements in running a successful purse-selling business. “Return customers are key,” she said. “Initially you have to go

out and contact people. (You have to) get your name out, so eventually people start contacting you for the events.” Russell said that if possible, it’s best to have several employees on board to help with sales, distribution and booking parties. “It’s overwhelming,” she said.

“It’s a lot of work, (especially) when you have a full-time job.” She said Wollan is destined to succeed. “She was one of my top salespersons,” Russell said. “She’s got the great personality and friend base to have a successful business.”

Chiropractic helps women help themselves DENNIS FRIEND

Improper alignment, nerves that are stretched or pinched, or a variety of other issues can be the cause of problems as wideranging as asthma, ear infections, acid reflux, certain heart conditions and symptoms like swelling or tingling sensations. The primary focus, she said, is vertebral subluxation. In simple terms, a subluxation is when the bones in a spinal column move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate nerves that come out from between each of the bones in the spine, causing those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves. “Most women that enter our office come in with a wide variety of symptoms and complaints,” including migraines and neck pain, she said. Common complaints involve back pain, knee, shoulder and hip pain, and headaches. “We see a lot of pregnant women with back pain. You have

Mouw Family Chiropractic has been involved with Ladies Night Out since the first effort three years ago, and the Mouw staff will have a booth again for this event. The Daily Nonpareil will hold its annual fall Ladies Night Out on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the Mid-America Center. The event runs from 5 to 8:30 p.m. “We’ve been involved since the beginning,” Dr. Lynne Mouw said. “We have really enjoyed our time at these events and I think we’ve been able to help a lot of women.” She and Dr. Mark Mouw, her husband of eight years, are doctors of chiropractic and co-owners of Mouw Chiropractic & Spinal Rehabilitation Center, 20 Power Drive, Suite 1. “Our clinic identity is, ‘We meet people where they are and help bring them to health,’” she said. This year, as in the past, Mouw will have doctors available to answer questions. “It’s an opportunity for free advice,” Lynne Mouw said. “We’ll be offering a chance for ladies to ask the doctors questions that they haven’t had time to ask or haven’t made an appointment because they didn’t know where to go. We’ll also do onsite thermal scans of your back to detect possible nerve interference in the body that can be causing symptoms. It would show any potential misalignments of the spine.” Mouw also will offer bilateral postural testing to check for “spinal distortion that can lead to back, hip and knee problems.” The primary goal of chiropractic is to “enhance the body’s selfhealing. It promotes the body’s innate ability to heal itself,” she said. The main chiropractic treatment technique usually involves manual therapy, including manipulation of the spine, joints and soft tissues. “We have the equivalent of a five-year (medical) degree,” but as chirpractors, “Our emphasis primarily is musculoskeletal and radiologic,” as opposed to the M.D. approach, which is more attuned to surgery and pharmacology. “Taking a drug may not always help,” she said, and a chiropractor’s treatment may

a change in weight over nine months,” she said, but pointed out that the chiropractors at Mouw have seen good results, reducing labor time and lowering the incidence of caesarean sections. “Through our educational process, our patients learn that through nutrition, exercise, decreasing life stress and chiropractic care they can improve their overall health and function,” she said. “We’re so concerned about fighting germs outside our bodies, and we’re not so concerned about strengthening our body’s internal army, which is our immune system,” she said. “You cannot eradicate germs. They’ll always be here. But if you strengthen your immune system, you can fight it off.” Four doctors of chiropractic work at Mouw Family Chiropractic, including Lynne and Mark, Brett Cornish and Amber Streff.

Regular haircuts should be part of routine hair care. Split ends can quickly ruin your hair.

Seven tips for good hair Shiny, lustrous and thick hair is desired by so many women. Far too often, however, this isn’t the type of hair DNA has dealt. But you can use the wide array of products and hair care tips available to achieve the best head of hair you can put forward. ■ Change your diet: A protein-rich diet will help grow stronger hair. Look for high protein foods such as liver, other organ meats, legumes, and also foods rich in B vitamins. Also, iron, calcium and silica help to prevent hair loss. Silica is found in the outer coverings of potatoes, green and red peppers, and cucumbers. ■ Water temperature: Depending on your hair type you will wash your hair daily, every other day, or even less frequently. Oily hair may need to be washed more frequently. Generally, every other day is the average. When washing, it’s recommended that you use warm water. Water that is too hot can damage the hair. ■ Washing technique: Use the pads of your fingers and not your nails to scrub your scalp. Be sure to rinse all of the shampoo out of your hair, otherwise residue can make locks limp and dull. Choose simple shampoos that do little more than clean the oil from your hair. Complicated formulas may be more expensive and do little help for your hair. Also, use conditioner sparingly. Globbing it on actually can have the reverse effect on your hair – making it drier

and less manageable. When using conditioner, only apply it from the height of your ears down. Avoid rubbing conditioner into the scalp. ■ Protect your hair: Just as you would use sunblock on your skin, you should use it on your hair and scalp to prevent against sun damage. Use a hat to cover up when your head will be exposed to strong sunlight. When going swimming in a pool or at the beach, consider combing a conditioner through your hair prior to add a layer of protection against the salt or chlorine. ■ Processing: Treatments that chemically alter your hair, such as coloring, perming and straightening, should be used sparingly, and rarely at the same time. Otherwise, you can

damage the hair. Consult with an experienced stylist as to what you can do with your hair and what should be avoided. ■ Comb and brush with caution: It’s not necessary to comb or brush your hair to the point of tears. In fact, excessively tugging on the hair can cause it to weaken and break. Only brush dry hair. Use a wide-toothed comb on wet hair to detangle. And always handle the hair gently. ■ Get regular haircuts: Split ends can quickly ruin your hairstyle. Even if you are growing out your hair, it is important to go for regular trimming to maintain your shape. Haircuts enable you to style your hair more easily and therefore use less product and fewer appliances to create the look you desire. – Metro Creative Connections

For years, foot doctors and orthopedists have been chastising women for wearing high heels because of the myriad foot ailments that can result. However, it seems a popular flat shoe can cause a host of foot, back and hip trouble in its own right. Sheepskin boots that are popular to wear during the year, whether Uggs or the multitude of knock-off brands available, may be unhealthy for your feet, said experts. That’s because the boots and similar shoes and slippers provide virtually no support for the arch of the foot. Individuals who have a low arch to begin with may experience further flattening of the arch and resulting foot trouble. What’s more, these shoes also do not provide much support around the ankle or any other part of the foot for that matter. The foot is simply able to slide around in the boot.

MCC

Popular shoes, including Uggs or other sheepskin boots, can cause a host of foot, back and hip trouble in its own right. Eventually this lack of support can cause foot pain, which may travel up the legs into the hip and back. Doctors warn that women, regardless of foot arch, should not wear these boots as their primary shoe source or for long durations of time, especially when doing a lot of walking.

The high glam look is back TIM ROHWER Staff Writer timothy.rohwer@nonpareilonline.com (712) 325-5752

Who doesn’t want to look glamorous and now is the time to do it, a local beauty expert said. “High glam is back and back in a huge way,” said Sue Strampe, a local BeautiControl representative. “We came off trends in the last year or two that were very much the natural look.” But now the trend is for deep, intense color, she said. “Dark, rich, bold.” BeautiControl is a beauty company that specializes in spa treatments, personalized skin care and advanced anti-aging products. Strampe and other representative will again set up shop at this year’s Ladies Night Out and what dazzling sights

await the audience. “Sexy, sultry eyes with dark, shimmering shadows. Lips full of luscious rich shades,” Strampe said. BeautiControl color features intense mineral shades that are dramatically beautiful with vibrant, intense pigments that are super-blendable, she said. And don’t just take her word for it, Strampe added, some of the world’s most successful designers agree. “In September, BeautiControl was the official cosmetic sponsor as we joined forces with Elle Magazine and Style 360 for Fashion Week in New York City,” Strampe said. “There were 11 designers who had a different makeup look they wanted to achieve for their fashions and so BeautiControl cosmetics were put to the test and passed with flying colors. Not only did our

makeup prove to be versatile enough to go from natural to dramatic, but the models, makeup artists and designers were wow’d at the quality and range of our cosmetics.” Strampe mentioned a special hand treatment for those who have dry hands, an occurrence from frequent hand washing or from handling paper. Within two seconds, the hands become soft and moist again. While the attendees can be pampered with all the latest trends, the real beauty of BeautiControl is its mobile spa that comes to the home, Strampe said. “We bring everything to the home,” she said. “It’s all about keeping everything simple.” BeautiControl’s vision is quite simple – to empower millions of women to live the life they love, she said.

From one man to many: Pat O’Show’s history The Pat O Show will be entertaining the crowd during Ladies Night Out this year. The Pat O Show is an ensemble of five who perform a mix of songs from the ’50s to today’s hits. Born and raised in Omaha, Pat O’Hanlon developed a love for music throughout his adolescence and teenage years. After years of listening to music, he decided to pick up a guitar and learn a few of his favorite songs. His first performance took place on a street corner in Germany when he was 24 years old. O’Hanlon returned to the states in the late 1980s and began performing as a street musician in Omaha’s Old Market. After that, he began performing at Dooley’s every Friday night for their Happy Hour. He billed himself as The One-Man-Band. The One-Man-Band lived up to his title: He played the drums with his feet, while strumming his acoustic 12-string guitar, singing the vocals and adding a little harmonica and kazoo in between verses. The One-Man-Band also played at The Varsity Sports Café on 12th and Farnam streets in Omaha, where he met his future drummer and caught a

glimpse of his future lead singer and “musical wife.” O’Hanlon had been playing music by himself for almost 10 years, with occasional performances with friend and guitarist Steve Sangiamino. It was during one of those nights that Sangiamino told O’Hanlon about a drummer friend that was looking for a band. O’Hanlon “auditioned” Wally and was brought into the band full-time. The OneMan-Band title no longer fit. Thus, The Pat O Show was born. The band’s lead singer, Jill,

joined in 2001. Her brother, John, started on with the band in 2005. As the band’s website states, “John, Wally, and Pat have become a ‘Band of Brothers,’ with Jill standing by as the Mother Hen of the group. Put it all together and you have one big, happy, rock-n-roll family that’ll be bringing their unique blend of music, dance, humor and fun to the stages of Omaha for many years to come!”

Restroom tips: Convenient traveling is in the bag Whether it’s the soothing sound of waves on a relaxing beach or the noisy exploration of new business opportunities, travel is back this year, as evidenced by six consecutive months of increasing airline revenues. And women are leading the way. Women now make 70 percent of all travel decisions and comprise more than half of all business travelers. With this leadership role, the inconveniences women deal with while traveling are on the rise as well. A recent online survey of about 1,400 women conducted by the makers of GoGirl (www.gogirl.com), a silicone device that allows women to go to the bathroom standing up, uncovered that finding adequate restrooms was the top travel inconvenience for women, followed by travel delays and navigating unfamiliar territory. Sarah Dillon, avid traveler and president of GoGirl, provides several tips for women who want to take a stand against travel restroom dilemmas. “As women take the lead in travel, our needs are beginning to be heard,” said Dillon. “We don’t have to settle for the travel hassles that we currently face – and the solutions are small enough to fit into our purses or bags.” The rapid integration of smart phone applications to plan itineraries, track flights, receive travel alerts, serve as boarding passes, and even get real-time directions has put convenient decision-making at travelers’ fingertips. And it’s no different for finding adequate restrooms, with applications such as SitorSquat

and Have2P, which locate public bathrooms close to your location, and share ratings. Some even have photos. While smart phone applications can help locate a lavatory, sometimes the most convenient restrooms along the route aren’t up to par – and sometimes there’s no restroom at all. Posing a solution to these restroom dilemmas are female urination devices, or products that enable women to go to the bathroom standing up in situations where restrooms are unfit or nonexistent. Products of this kind have been available and widely used in Europe for years, but now the trend has hit the U.S., and with female travelers especially. “An unexpected convenience, solutions like GoGirl are perfect for any bathroom emergency a woman can face,” said Dillon. “For travelers, there’s no more worrying about what kind of bathroom you’ll find or if you find one at all; for campers, there are no more soiled clothing or shoes. Even if you just want to avoid germs in places like gas stations and airports, there’s a use for these products in almost any situation.” According to Chuck Weisbart, owner of It’s in the Bag! travel store in Palm Desert, Calif., GoGirl and other similar products are go-to convenience items for women travelers. “Many of our customers do a lot of third-world travel, or go on outdoor adventures while they’re traveling,” said Weisbart. “Women love GoGirl for its convenience and practicality – it weighs nothing and takes up very little space when not in use, and it’s one of those products

Body Pump and Zumba are among the Y’s most popular fitness classes. Body Pump workouts are performed to music using free weights, barbells and an aerobic step. How to save big with coupons When utilized in the right way, coupons are an accessible and effective way to save money on many everyday purchases. About 75 percent of the population reports using coupons on a regular basis. Consumers save billions of dollars annually thanks to coupons. However, many customers still aren’t using all the coupons available. By following a few tips, consumers can maximize the benefit of coupons – and reap the most savings in the process. ■ Coupons are only effective if they are used. Keep clipped coupons, in a wallet that is brought to the store, otherwise they may be forgotten at home. ■ Coupons come in many forms. Check the supermarket flyer for store coupons, subscribe to the newspaper – especially the Sunday edition – for many manufacturers’ coupons, and don’t forget about the clipless coupons available by using a store’s convenience card. ■ Only use coupons for items that are routinely used in the household. Don’t feel obligated to purchase an item just because there is a coupon for it. This could result in impulse buys that end up costing shoppers more money. ■ Try different brands. This expands the number of possibilities a person has to use coupons. ■ Always comparison shop to ensure the best deal is being had. Just because there is a coupon for one item, another may be lower priced. ■ Find out which stores “double” coupons or allow customers to combine coupons. Shop there for the most savings. ■ For those who shop primarily online, there are a number of Web sites that offer coupon codes

Coupons come in many forms – check flyers, subscribe to the newspaper and use the store’s convenience card for popular online retailers. Enter the code for savings. ■ Be conscious of coupon expiration dates. Remember to utilize the coupons before they expire. ■ Sign up for promotional material from different brands that are used in the home. For example, certain baby formula companies will offer coupons or discount checks simply by becoming a “member” online. ■ Sign up for promotional material from the stores that are regularly shopped by members

of the family. Often these retailers will send coupons in the mail or by e-mail to their “preferred shoppers.” ■ Using a store credit card could provide additional savings. If the interest rate and terms are acceptable, this could mean even greater savings. Plus, coupons may be sent in the mail. ■ Some organizations offer rebates for partnership companies. Find out if the store offers a military, law enforcement or similar discount. – Metro Creative Connections

Easy beauty fixes with everyday items There’s a bevy of beauty products on the store shelves promising to do everything from eradicating wrinkles to imparting greater shine in your hair. However, you can achieve many of the same effects with items you may already have around the house – and for much less money. Some of the most effective beauty products don’t come from the spa or the drug store. They’re found right in the kitchen cabinets or refrigerator. A few simple ingredients are all you need to look your best. ■ Avocadoes: Instead of mashing this fruit for guacamole, reserve some mashed avocadoes for a skin mask or to provide therapy to dry hair. Mix a little olive oil in with the avocado, apply to hair, let sit, then rinse thoroughly. ■ Egg yolks: Making an egg white omelet? Don’t toss the yolks in the trash. Whip them up, apply to your face for a firming mask. Then rinse off. ■ Tomato juice: While it’s true that tomato juice may be able to help lessen the smell of skunk spray, it can also remedy hair that has been damaged by swimming pools. Light-colored hair can take on a green hue from pool chlorine and other chemicals. Applying pure tomato juice to locks, leaving on for 15 minutes, and then rinsing can remove the green tinge. ■ Grapefruit: Squeeze the juice of two grapefruits into a bucket of warm water. Soak your feet for 30 minutes to soften feet and remove tension. ■ Tea bags: Tea bags can reduce puffiness around the eyes and also dry out pimples and boils. Steep the tea bags in warm water and then apply to the affected area. Just be sure the bags are warm and not too hot. ■ Coffee grounds: Coffee grounds make for good composting material, but they can also prove an invaluable beauty item. Rubbing used coffee grounds on cellulite, then wrapping the area in plastic wrap and leaving it for 30 minutes can help diminish the look

They can reduce redness and puffiness of the eyes when chilled and placed on for several minutes. ■ Oatmeal: Oatmeal is not just for chicken pox. Oatmeal baths can reduce redness, itching and irritation from other skin ailments, such as psoriasis, eczema and even just dry skin. – Metro Creative Connections

Looking your best on a budget Everyone is looking for ways to save money during the recession. Many are brown bagging their lunches, car pooling and getting their hair cut and colored less often. Wherever you’ve chosen to cut back, you still can keep yourself looking fresh and modern. Here are a few tips from Damien Carney, international artistic director for JOICO, on what you can do to look your best on a budget. ■ Protect your hair from sun damage. The sun naturally lightens your hair and oxidizes color-treated hair. Look for products that shield your hair from harmful ultraviolet rays, so you can maintain your hair color for longer. ■ Treat damaged hair. Taking a few moments to repair your hair could be all you need to refresh your look. For only $15.95, K-PAK Intense Hydrator is a rich, creamy treatment that restores moisture and keeps hair strong. It helps combat the damage caused by blow dryers, flatirons, relaxers, perms and coloring, enabling you to go longer periods of time between appointments. ■ Maintain your color at home. You can make your color last longer by treating it right and choosing products designed to extend the life of color. JOICO Color Endure

Choppy layers keeps hair looking groomed between appointments Shampoo ($12.95) is specifically designed to keep your color from fading. ■ Extend the time between haircuts. If you’ve been yearning for long hair, now may be the perfect time to start growing out your cut. Cutting in choppy layers keeps your hair looking groomed and minimizes the appearance of split ends. Set up an appointment

with your stylist to discuss a look that requires minimal upkeep. ■ More for less. Always check for larger sizes of your favorite products to make sure you are getting the most value for the money. Often you can get twice as much product for just a few more dollars. With a little forethought and planning, you can continue to look your best, while sticking to your budget. Considering the best at-home treatments, choosing a cut and color that works and protecting your hair from the elements, all go a long way to keep you current and solvent. – Metro Creative Connections

Do away Get hair you’ll love with wrinkles Apart from graying hair, wrinkles are one of the key signs of aging in a person. As a result, individuals will often search near and far and spare no expense at keeping wrinkles at bay. However, there are simple steps one can take to diminish the look of wrinkles without drastic measures. Injectable fillers and other medical procedures top the list of wrinkle treatments. However, for those who don’t want to visit a doctor for wrinkles, there are some steps to try. First, treating wrinkles requires understanding why they form. As a person ages, his or her skin becomes thinner, dryer and less elastic. These factors contribute to the creases that form in the skin. Genetics also plays a large role in the probability for wrinkles. Some people are just prone to more wrinkles than others. Certain controllable factors also contribute to wrinkles. Therefore, elimination of these factors can lessen the chance for wrinkle formation. ■ Quit smoking. Blood supply changes in the skin as a result of smoking, which can speed up the natural aging process. Smokers tend to have more wrinkles than nonsmokers. Simply quitting can help stave off wrinkling of the skin. ■ Avoid UV exposure. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can damage the skin. This can dry out skin, removing elasticity and even thinning out the skin years before nature would. UV exposure breaks down the skin’s connective tissue, contributing to sagging and wrinkling. Always use a sun protection product when out in the sun, and avoid the strongest rays. In lieu of a tanning bed, use a self-tanning cream or a bronzing powder for a warm glow. ■ Be conscious of repeated facial expressions. Squinting, smiling and other repeated gestures with the face can cause lines to form under the skin. For those who find them-

selves squinting, they can try sunglasses or have their vision checked. Smiling cannot be avoided; however, one can stretch the muscles of the face to improve in strength and flexibility. ■ Eat and drink healthily. The skin is the largest organ of the body. Just like the heart and lungs, it needs healthy foods to stay in top form. Be sure to include a balanced diet and plenty of hydrating beverages in the plan for healthy skin. Avoid over-indulgence in caffeine, sodium and alcohol, all of which can dehydrate and possibly compound skin dryness. ■ Exercise. Exercise gets the heart pumping and brings oxygen to all necessary systems of the body. Again, with skin being the largest organ, exercise can help promote a healthy appearance and ward off premature wrinkling. ■ Use care when washing. Tugging and rubbing of the skin can damage connective fibers, leading to wrinkles. Massage the face gently when washing and avoid harsh exfoliating products that can scratch and damage the skin. Trying these methods can help minimize the appearance of wrinkles. However, if wrinkles become a nuisance, a consultation with a dermatologist to discuss options may be necessary. – Metro Creative Connections

You can use the wide array of products and hair care tips available to achieve the best head of hair you can put forward. ■ Change your diet: A proteinrich diet will help grow stronger hair. Look for high protein foods such as liver, other organ meats, legumes, and also foods rich in B vitamins. Also, iron, calcium and silica help to prevent hair loss. Silica is found in the outer coverings of potatoes, green and red peppers, and cucumbers. ■ Water temperature: Depending on your hair type, you will wash your hair daily, every other day or even less frequently. When going swimming in a pool or at the beach, consider combing a

Regular haircuts should be part of routine hair care. conditioner through your hair prior to add a layer of protection against the salt or chlorine. ■ Processing: Treatments

that chemically alter your hair, such as coloring, perming and straightening, should be used sparingly, and rarely at the same time. Consult with an experienced stylist as to what you can do with your hair and what should be avoided. ■ Comb and brush with caution: It’s not necessary to comb or brush your hair to the point of tears. Excessively tugging on the hair can cause it to weaken and break.

Ward off winter weight gain With winter on the horizon once again, the familiar retreat indoors is in full swing. With the colder weather comes less time spent outside, and more time spent on the couch. While it’s difficult for those who live in areas with particularly harsh winters to do much of anything outdoors once the temperatures begin their annual descent, it’s not that difficult for cold-climate dwellers to continue emphasizing their health during such months. However, the colder climes coupled with the holidays make it easy to ignore healthier habits during the winter. As a result, many people pack on extra pounds throughout the winter months, taking advantage of all those holiday goodies while also using the bitter weather as an excuse to avoid daily exercise or healthy habits. Just because the weather outside is frightful doesn’t mean the attitude inside should be an unhealthy one. In fact, there are many ways for those stuck inside to stay healthy this winter, no matter how many feet of snow have piled up outside. ■ Brown bag it. Instead of visiting the office cafeteria or the nearby food truck for lunch, pack your own lunch instead. Doing so gives individuals complete control over their own diets, enabling them to eat healthy foods instead of the often processed foods available at cafeterias or other locales that cater to the office lunch crowd. When packing lunch, choose foods that won’t be energy drainers for the afternoon. It’s often difficult enough to maintain energy after lunch when the weather is cold and leaving the office isn’t an option. Choose foods that will boost energy, such as fruits and vegetables. ■ Avoid missing meals. Perhaps because of the often hectic holiday season, many people find themselves eating whenever they can and not necessarily when they should once winter arrives. Thought it can be difficult to make time during the holidays, it’s imperative to stay on a meal schedule. Skipping meals often leads to overeating, as it’s human nature to overcompen-

Tips * Brown bag it * Don’t miss a meal * Change eating habits * Ditch the sugar-laden drinks sate for a missed meal by eating more when the chance presents itself. The side effects of overeating are well known and, if coupled with the more sedentary lifestyle many people live during the winter, can result in serious physical problems before the season is over. ■ Change eating habits. Competitive bodybuilders call it “grazing,” eating several smaller, healthier meals throughout the day instead of sitting down to the more widely accepted three meals per day. Such a schedule might seem radical, but it’s highly effective if done correctly. Grazing effectively helps keep blood sugar levels stable throughout the day, so people won’t get the hunger pangs they otherwise might.

However, when grazing, it’s important to limit calorie consumption. It’s very easy for beginning “grazers” to overdo it with each meal, as they’re used to eating meals with lots of calories. But eating six meals per day with too many calories will likely prove disastrous. Instead, limit meals to between 200 to 300 calories and stick to the schedule of eating every two to three hours. While it will likely prove a difficult adjustment at first, the results will begin to show and energy levels could rise as well. ■ Say so long to sugar-laden drinks. Most people would admit they eat too much sugar during the holidays. But even when the holidays have come and gone, chances are there’s plenty of ways for health-conscious men and women to reduce their sugar intakes. Perhaps no way to do that is more effective than to say so long to sugary beverages, including sodas and seasonal beverages like hot chocolate. Even everyday drinks like coffee and tea can be enjoyed without sugar. It’s easy to find non- or reduced-sugar hot chocolate, and those who like sugar in their coffee can either enjoy it without sugar or simply reduce how much sugar they put in their morning cup o’ Joe. Oftentimes, what we drink is far more sugar laden than what we eat, so be on the lookout for beverages that are high in sugar.

Packing your own lunch, instead of relying on office cafeterias, is one easy and effective way to control calorie intake and ward off the annual winter weight gain.

Cyber security shopping in-store, where clothing can be tried on and products examined prior to purchase. A trustworthy online retailer will recognize this disparity and offer a lenient return policy wherein shoppers can return items that are not what they appeared to be on a shopper’s computer. A trustworthy online retailer will also have an easily accessible privacy and security policy. This should indicate if the retailer intends to share its users’ information (and which information is shared) with a third party and if the retailer mandates that any third party cannot market to users. This is a great way to reduce the receipt of unsolicited e-mails, also known as “spam.” ■ Shop with credit cards and only credit cards. While it’s easy

Stay safe when shopping online Once used primarily for email and information gathering, the Internet has grown in leaps and bounds during the 21st century. It’s now just as easy, if not much easier, to shop for loved ones online, where shoppers can visit their favorite stores and make purchases without the hassle of haggling for parking spaces or dealing with heavy holiday traffic. But just because online shopping is convenient doesn’t mean there aren’t a few tricks of the trade shoppers should know to make sure everything goes smoothly and safely. ■ Only use secure Web sites. The easiest way to determine if a website is secure is to look at the URL. Instead of the “http://” of standard websites, a secure site will read “https://.” That “s” signifies that the site is secure. However, many times the “s” won’t appear until it’s time to check out. This shouldn’t concern shoppers, as sites won’t ask for personal information until checkout anyway. Another, and even easier, way to determine if a website is secure is to look for the closed padlock icon at the bottom of the screen. Such a padlock is there when checking e-mail on a secure e-mail server like Gmail or Yahoo! mail, and it should also appear on the websites of online retailers. If there is no “s” or no padlock (some websites use a broken key instead), the site should be avoided. ■ Learn how to determine which retailers are trustworthy. Many shoppers are skeptical of spending lots of money with retailers they haven’t previously done business with, even when they have met the retailer or visited the store in person. Not surprisingly, trust remains an issue and might even be a bigger issue when shopping online, where retailers are faceless and can be more difficult to contact. When looking for a trustworthy online retailer, look for cer-

to go overboard with credit cards when shopping for the holidays, online shopping should always be done with credit cards instead of debit cards or personal checks. Users are always protected from fraud when using a credit card thanks to the Fair Credit Billing Act. Charges can always be disputed and payments withheld while the investigation is ongoing. Shoppers are vulnerable to bank fraud and even identity theft when using a debit card or sending a personal check. Even cashier’s checks and money orders are less shopper-friendly than credit cards because such methods of payment leave little room for recourse should the purchase encounter any problems down the road. – Metro Creative Connections

Fall forecast calls for colorful coats The cooler weather is again upon us. Those who remember last year might recall that winter arrived early and overstayed its welcome. Much of the country felt the initial tease of winter in mid-October and didn’t kiss chilly temps goodbye until the following May. While the previous year’s worth of unpredictable weather has restored the notion that you never know what’s coming with respect to the weather forecast, it’s not impossible to come up with a fashion forecast for the coming chilly season. Fashionista and women’s outerwear expert Cindy Dunham of Burlington Coat Factory offers the following predictions on what to expect this season and how to look hot when it gets cold. The Styles For the office – “During the winter months, a coat is an extension of your business ensemble,” said Dunham. “Think mid-thigh length jackets in wool blends cinched tightly with a belt for an hour-glass silhouette.” For play – This season, casual yet structured pea coats are the perfect top layer, with glamorous modern and feminine styling. “Skip the stuffy belt and look for more on a trendy closure like toggles,” said Dunham. “Fun plaid patterns and bright jeweled-toned pea coats will be the must-have items for the fall.” For a night out on the town – Faux leather jackets will be all the rage this fall and into the winter since they can easily transition from daytime to evening. The night will also bring about more romantic short coats with faux fur accents or mid-calf sweeping wool jackets with fur trim. And luxury fabrics such as cashmere, angora and alpaca blends in adventurous colors and patterns like metallics will shine through the night. The Colors In addition to predicting the popularity of leather and deep shades of purple and teal this autumn, Dunham feels bright colors will also rule the roost. “Bright colors will stand out this fall, including brilliant gem-

Jennie Edmundson cares for women TIM JOHNSON Staff Writer tjohnson@nonpareilonline.com (712) 325-5750

Jennie Edmundson Hospital offers a comprehensive program of women’s services, from childbirth classes to breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, according to Peggy Helget, vice president of patient services. Jennie Edmundson has the only accredited cancer center in southwest Iowa and, this year, received the Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons, placing in the top 18 percent among the 432 centers surveyed, according to a press release from the hospital. It was the only center in Iowa or Nebraska to receive the honor this year. “About three-fourths of the cancer patients in the United States are treated in accredited cancer programs, and only about one-fourth of the programs are accredited,” said Dr. Mike Zlomke, M.D., cancer liaison physician and medical director of the hospital’s Breast Health Center. Jennie Edmundson’s Breast Health Center provides care tailored to women and plays a key role in the cancer center’s work, he said. The Breast Health Center itself was accredited in August. “I think the accreditation process verified what we already had believed, which was that we’re providing really great care that’s up to national standards to the women of southwest Iowa,” he said. “Breast cancer is our No. 1 cancer that we see here at Jennie Edmundson. Last year – 2009 – we had 106 cases (new diagnoses) that were touched by Jennie Edmundson – and that was the most we’d ever had.” Jennie Edmundson was one of the first hospitals in the area to offer digital mammography services, Zlomke said. “That really helps in our younger patients and women with denser breast tissue,” he said. Jennie has added another tool that helps in the detection of breast cancer. In February, the hospital implemented Breast Specific Gamma Imaging, or gammagrams. This type of imaging is particularly helpful in

The hospital participates in clinical trials often and is working to expand this area, Zlomke said. Jennie Edmundson’s sports medicine program provides athletic trainers to all Council Bluffs schools and a full range of physical therapy and orthopedic services at multiple locations, Helget said. Physical and Occupational Therapy focus on women’s services in the area of incontinence treatment, pelvic pain, and breast cancer follow up lymphedema specialist. The hospital provides women’s surgery in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, with the outpatient area conveniently located on the east side of the main level of the facility, she said. The Jennie Edmundson Hospital Family Birthing Center provides family centered care in a private room LDRP (labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum care all in the same room) philosophy, Helget said. Jennie’s birthing services include childbirth and baby classes, a lactation consultant, and weekly breastfeeding support group. All of these areas are supported by the Jennie Edmundson Family and Community Resource Center that provide resources and educational materials to patients, families, and the community including information on women’s health, well-

ness, and diseases and treatments. “This is just an overview of the services provided to women at Jennie Edmundson,” Helget said. “The experienced physicians and staff at Jennie provide
