Mae’s Health and Wellness to feature fruits at booth
The aronia berry has been dubbed the “superberry” by many, including Ken Sailors, the owner of Mae’s Health and Wellness in Omaha. The berry is packed with antioxidants. Submitted photos
MIKE BROWNLEE Staff Writer mike.brownlee@nonpareilonline.com (712) 325-5732
Ken Sailors gets excited about the aronia berry. The owner of Mae’s Health and Wellness, 8909 H St., in Omaha, has been selling the “super berry” for more than six years and has been studying and growing it for 15. “Here we have the greatest food on the planet earth, period,” Sailors said. “And this well bear out to be true because of what I’ve seen in my shop for over six years.” Aronia melanocarpa is a black, small berry that is a close cousin to the blueberry and is native to North America. According to antioxidant-fruits.com, the aronia berry has a higher concentration of antioxidants than the blueberry, cranberry and even pomegranate. Sailors declined to get into specifics about what maladies he’s seen the berry cure because of legal reasons. According to www.aroniaberry.org, the high concentrations of anthocyanins in the aronia “offer almost supernatural benefits,” which work by boosting the body’s immune system. The Web site said ailments including cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and more have “been tested against high dosages of anthocyanin, all to impressive results.” The site does add that the amount of benefits will vary for each individual and doctors should be consulted. At Mae’s, Sailors sells a variety of aronia berry products, including concentrated juice, jelly, jam, tea and a four-berry superchew that includes aronia, blueberry, black raspberry and elderberry. The company’s Web site is superberries.com. Sailors said he has been recruiting farmers to grow
the aronia and working with scientists studying the berry for 15 years. He said the berry is primed for an explosion into the American consciousness. “It’s a wonderful product that really matches up with our body in many ways,” Sailors said. “We are going to try to heal this nation, from the heartland, with superberries.”

BeautiControl has products for women CHAD NATION Staff Writer cnation@nonpareilonline.com (712) 325-5738
Spring is in the air and the weather is ripe for a party. Rain or shine, women from around the metropolitan area will have a chance to unwind Wednesday, April 14, at the Nonpareil Ladies Night Out. The event will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mid-America Center’s Convention Center and feature vendors, free gifts and entertainment. Speaking of parties, one vendor at Ladies Night Out will be booking parties for personal pampering. Sue Strampe and two BeautiControl directors will be at the event sharing information and booking dates for BeautiControl SPA parties. What is a BeautiControl SPA party, you may be wondering? “SPA stands for: spa treatments, personalized skin care and advanced anti-aging products,” Strampe said. BeautiControl is a beauty company
that specializes in SPA through a unique at-home spa experience. Featuring anti-aging skin care products, make up, body cleansers, body moisturizers, body scrubs, face care, hand care, in-bath treats, and leg and foot care, BeautiControl SPA has a product for everyone. And the one-of-akind parties to preview the products work well for busy women. Strampe said she became involved with the business after she experienced an incredible hour of spa treatments and relaxation and she wanted to share it with the world. “Most women are so busy juggling their job, kid’s activities, household responsibilities and other endless tasks that they rarely take time for themselves,” Strampe said. “BC Spa is
the prefect excuse to get girlfriends together, ‘shut out the crazy world’ and be pampered.” The BeautiControl SPA booth at Ladies Night Out will feature many of the products and an opportunity to try them out. Attendees who stop by the booth will be able to enjoy a hand treatment and a massage using an Omni Massage Roller. “Ladies can also schedule a free spa night for themselves and their girlfriends and spin the SPA-Wheel of Fortune to earn free spa products,” Strampe said. “There will also be SPAllywood Squares offered. Buy squares at $2 each and be eligible to win $100 in free product.” Submitted photo

Jennie Edmundson booth to feature health items, gifts TIM ROHWER Staff Writer timothy.rohwer@nonpareilonline.com (712) 325-5752
Important health information and some nice things to buy. That’s what Jennie Edmundson Hospital will bring to this spring’s Ladies Night Out. “We’ll have two booths there,” said hospital spokesperson Tara Slevin. “One will be our gift shop where all proceeds raised will go back to patient care.” Items for sale include purses, scarves and jewelry to name just a few. “It’s going to be a cross-section of what we have, a little sampling of everything,” Slevin said, adding that the gift shop is staffed completely by hospital volunteers. The other booth will be manned by officials of the hospital’s Breast Health Center featuring brochures and flyers on breast health information, such as when to start having mammograms and how to perform self-exams, said Tammy Johnson, the health center’s nurse coor-
dinator. Information will also be available on the center’s new BSGI, Breast Specific Gamma Imaging, machine. “It’s another diagnostic tool,” Johnson said. There will also be a drawing for a free mammogram, she added. A fine crowd visited that booth at last spring’s event, Johnson said. “We had quite a few stop by and ask questions, along with patients of ours who said hello,” she said. “It’s a nice event.” One question that was frequently asked was how to schedule a mammogram, she said, to which an appointment phone number was handed out. This year, women will be able to schedule a mammogram right there at the booth, Johnson said. It’s certainly worthwhile for all women attending the event to stop by that booth, she said. “Early detection in breast cancer can save lives. We’re trying to get the word out on that and all the wonderful services we have.”

Alegent Health to offer signup at event TIM JOHNSON Staff Writer tjohnson@nonpareilonline.com (712) 325-5750
The Daily Nonpareil will hold its third Ladies Night Out this spring. This year’s event will be Wednesday, April 14 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mid-America Center, 1 Arena Way. Among the dozens of exhibitors returning this year will be Alegent Health. The health system will again offer women a chance to schedule real-time appointments for mammograms at its booth, said Sheri Pauley of Alegent. This opportunity was introduced at last year’s event and drew a positive response, she said. “It’s great to be able to offer women the ability to schedule a real-time appointment for their annual mammograms at this event,” said Judy Ambrose, director of diagnostic services at Mercy Hospital. “It’s easy and convenient – and sometimes, it’s a little nudge to remind

Alegent Health personnel will also be able to help prospective patients find a physician through the Alegent.com/clinic Web site, based on their needs and preferences, Pauley said. And there will be information about Alegent’s Heart and
Sole walking program, maternity and other services, with the
focus on the women’s services offered at Mercy Hospital. “I hope everyone who comes to Ladies Night Out will come to see the Alegent Health Clinic and Mercy Hospital booths,” Ambrose said. Visitors will have a chance to spin a wheel and win a prize. Also, there will be a drawing for a chance to win a $50 Hy-Vee gift card or a fruit basket. The event will offer women a chance to shop for health care, jewelry, accessories and other goods and services in one place while enjoying a beverage from the free sampling bar sponsored by Doll Distributing. Best ways to cook for one Perhaps you’re the senior woman or gentleman at the supermarket pushing a wagon full of TV convenience dinners. While it may seem the easy way to go now that the family has left the coop, those convenience meals are not always the healthiest option. Generally high in sodium and calories, they don't always fit into the acceptable diet for an elder person. Cooking for one or two is something that should be embraced as you grow older. While you may be accustomed to cooking for a family, now that the nest is empty, scaling back will be required. Homemade food can be delicious, nutritious and simple. For adults who have lost a spouse or live alone, cooking can also be an enjoyable break in the day – brightening your mood. Consider these tips. ■ Spend a day cooking for the week, if desired. Make a few items that can be stretched and enjoyed later in the week or “tweaked” into a completely dif-
ferent meal. Meatloaf, for example, can be made into several meals. ■ “Dinner"”doesn't have to be the extravagant meal that it once was. A half of a sandwich and a bowl of soup are perfectly acceptable options. ■ Many of your favorite
recipes can be cut in half and enjoyed. ■ Invest in good-quality freezer bags or a device that vacuum seals items. Buying smaller packages of foods tends to be more expensive than buying in bulk.

LADIES NIGHT OUT
Tea time turns to tee time Women increasingly lured by golf It wasn’t too long ago that men were the only golf enthusiasts hitting the links. However, women have been breaking down the barriers of all-boys sports clubs lately (think auto racer Danica Patrick or boxer Laila Ali), and golf is no exception. In recent years, research conducted by the PGA, National Golf Foundation, Executive Women’s Golf Association, and other groups indicates an increase in the number of women playing golf and an increase in the amount of money they spend on the game, merchandise and lessons. In fact, this research shows that women represent the most significant opportunity for growth in the industry. Golf not only presents a way for women to use golf to their advantage in the business world, but many women are finding that golf outings are the perfect way to spend social time with their girlfriends, too. Whether it’s just for a weekend or a week, women are breaking away from the hectic pace of jobs and families and recharging their batteries with golfcentered getaways with their girlfriends. The concept of women-only golf getaways began in 1960, when Peggy Kirk Bell and Ellen Griffin established the Pine Needles Ladies Only Golfari in North Carolina (sonamed because it is “a safari of golf”). Bell wanted to attract more women to the game. Since then many other enterprising organizations have catered to the female golf client, packaging time out on the green with ample shopping and opportunities to be pampered through spa services. And these getaways can occur all around the world. Women can stay close to home and play a few holes coast-tocoast, from California to South Carolina. Or they can venture overseas and tour the courses of Europe – it all depends on the package and the price desired. Talk to a travel agent about what courses and clubs offer women’s golf getaway packages. Metro Creative Connection

7 easy tips for good hair Move over soccer Shiny, lustrous and thick hair is desired by so many women. Far too often, however, this isn’t the type of hair DNA has dealt. But a wide array of products and hair care tips available can help achieve the best head of hair a lady can put forward. 1. Change the diet: A protein-rich diet will help grow stronger hair. Look for high protein foods such as liver, other organ meats, legumes, and also foods rich in B vitamins. Also, iron, calcium and silica help to prevent hair loss. Silica is found in the outer coverings of potatoes, green and red peppers, and cucumbers. 2. Water temperature: Depending on the hair type a woman will wash her hair daily, every other day, or even less frequently. Oily hair may need to be washed more frequently. ¦¦Generally, every other day is the average. When washing, it’s recommended to use warm water. Water that is too hot can damage the hair. 3. Washing technique: Use the pads of fingers and not fingernails to scrub the scalp. Be sure to rinse all of the shampoo out of hair, otherwise residue can make locks limp and dull. Choose simple shampoos that do little more than clean the oil from hair. Complicated formulas may be more expensive and do little help for hair. Also, use conditioner sparingly. Globbing it on actually can have the reverse effect on hair – making it drier and less manageable. When using condi-

Protect hair: Just as a woman would use sunblock on her skin, she should use it on her hair and scalp to prevent against sun damage. Use a hat to cover up when exposed to strong sunlight. When going swimming in a pool or at the beach, consider combing a conditioner through hair prior to add a layer of protection against the salt or chlorine. 5. Processing: Treatments that chemically alter hair, such as coloring, perming and straightening, should be used sparingly, and rarely at the same time. Otherwise it can damage the hair. Consult with an experienced stylist as to do
with hair and what should be avoided. 6. Comb and brush with caution: It’s not necessary to comb or brush hair to the point of tears. In fact, excessively tugging on the hair can cause it to weaken and break. Only brush dry hair. Use a wide-toothed comb on wet hair to detangle. And always handle the hair gently. 7. Get regular haircuts: Split ends can quickly ruin a hairstyle. Even if a woman are growing out her hair, it is important to go for regular trimming to maintain the shape. Haircuts enable her to style her hair more easily and therefore use less product and fewer appliances to create the look she desires. Metro Creative Connection
Many women are trading in their team jerseys for yoga mats. The busy soccer mom has transformed into the calm and ethereal yoga mom who is more interested in a stressfree life than racing around to sports practices. For a long time the stereotypical image of a mom was a minivan-driving, white, 40something picking up Timmy from sports practice and Jenny from cheerleading. Her fast-paced lifestyle had her racing between children’s engagements to home to other social obligations in a harried, time-pressed manner. But today people are more likely to see mom practicing her asanas instead of toting clipboards and team snacks. She’s scooting around in her Toyota Prius instead of the Dodge Caravan and is more about living in the moment than over-programming children with music lessons and enrichment classes. Today’s moms are more free-spirited and learn-asyou-go types. They don’t strive for the same goals as their mothers before them. Instead of keeping up with the Joneses and striving for perfection, the Yoga Mom or Eco Mom is customizing her life the way she sees fit. So what else is different
about women of the Yoga Mom mind set? A lot actually. Today’s moms live further from their Baby Boomer parents, and aren’t as influenced by their go-getter attitudes. As such, Eco Moms are more community-based and interested in being everyone’s friends. That’s why people are more likely to find Yoga Moms blogging, heading grassroots campaigns and seeking new friends on social networking sites. Yoga moms are more about spreading the word on ways to improve the community and planet than receiving the gossip on how to get ahead or the best recipe to bring to the office potluck. Many Yoga moms saw their own mothers struggle with the work-family balance with little success. New moms are more about embracing what’s real and meaningful than being caught up in the rat race. That isn’t to say today’s moms are sitting on the couch catching up with daytime programming. They are certainly educated, successful women. They’re simply putting their needs on par with the needs of their family and feeling better about themselves in the process. Metro Creative Connection

Women’s health issues WORKING OUT doctors may miss While many women are comfortable with their family practice or women’s health office and find they get good care, many more women are dissatisfied. Experts say that many women complain that their doctors aren’t taking their symptoms seriously. They’re told symptoms could be psychosomatic or the result of over-worrying. As a result, many walk out of medical offices without answers and could face further complications down the line. Oftentimes, women are suffering from an autoimmune disease, in which the body is attacking itself. Doctors could miss the symptoms and rule it out as “something in your head.” However, generally women know when something is amiss with their bodies. Therefore, it is important for women to educate themselves about common diseases that often go undiagnosed. Learning about the risk factors and the symptoms of diseases can help you to get help and feel better faster by broaching the subject with your doctor: Fibromyalgia This is often unexplainable widespread pain, extreme tiredness and sometimes numbness that lasts for months or more. There are no lab tests to test for fibromyalgia; therefore, doctors generally go through a few questions and do a tender point test. If various points on the body are tender without obvious sign of bruising or redness, it could be fibromyalgia. There is no cure, only pain medication to alleviate symptoms. Light exercise with stretching can help. Lupus Each year, more than 16,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with lupus – 90 percent of them are women. Doctors think that hormones play a role in lupus, seeing as many women are diagnosed right after pregnancy. Lupus affects many areas of the body, including the blood, kidneys, skin, joints and lungs. Generally, the body becomes its own worst

Cheri Patterson nightmare. Lupus is diagnosed if you have at least four of the symptoms. Anti-inflammatory medication is used to treat the pain of lupus, but there is no cure. Rheumatoid Arthritis This is another debilitating disease that can impact quality of life. Rheumatoid arthritis attacks the linings of the joints (called synovium) due to the immune system. Swelling, aching, and potential deformity in hands, wrists, hips, knees, and feet can occur. RA can be difficult to diagnose because many different types of arthritis have the same symptoms. However, an antibody called rheumatoid factor is present in 80 percent of RA patients. A blood test can detect this antibody. Tests that measure inflammation also may be ordered. For a visual, X-rays are taken over time to plot the level of joint deterioration. High doses of omega fatty acids can
help with swelling and pain, as can certain medications. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome This is caused by high levels of androgens – male hormones – in a woman’s body. The androgens form when there is too much insulin present. The insulin infiltrates the ovaries and causes them to produce more testosterone. Cysts form as a result. Half of all women with PCOS end up with diabetes. Symptoms of PCOS include excessive weight gain, more hair growth on the chest, face, back and limbs, irregular or nonexistent periods, and baldness. When other diseases are ruled out, such as hyperthyroidism, an ultrasound to see if abnormal growths are present on the ovaries could be ordered. Treatment includes birth control pills to regulate menstruation and medicine to reduce blood glucose.

Make jewelry a gem of a gift Many women welcome the gift of jewelry, but prefer jewelry that’s unique. Jewelry presents should be as unique as their recipient. But being personal, unique and ensuring a jewelry piece will be worn takes a little effort. Consider these pointers. ■ Think beyond the diamond: Many guys feel pressured to purchase diamond jewelry. The fact is, not all women feel compelled to wear diamonds – well, all of the time. It may be more meaningful if you gift her with her birthstone, a favorite gem or even a simple piece of gold. It all depends on her personality. Notice what type of jewelry she tends to wear and her color preferences. Figure out if she has her heart set on a particular piece. ■ Buck the trends: Avoid the marketed gift of the year. While it may work for footwear, jewelry, like fragrances, is more personal. A one-style-fits-all gift simply may not work here. Again, think about her style and personality and use that as a guide for jewelry purchases. ■ New is not necessarily better: Some women adore antique pieces. A passed-down cameo pendant that your grandmother once wore may offer more implied meaning than that new necklace fresh off of the display case. ■ Personalize your pieces: Think about pieces that have unique meaning. Does she collect pearls? How about a charm bracelet that can be augmented each year? Even having a pendant engraved with a touching sentiment can be the way to ensure her gift is one-of-a-kind. ■ Go with what works: If she’s a stud earring sort of gal, gift her with a new pair. Now is not the time to try out what you believe to be new and exciting. A woman can never have enough of her favorite type of jewelry.

Reclaiming lost closet space Ask apartment dwellers one problem they’d most like to address about apartment life and you’re likely to hear many, if not most, groan about their relative lack of closet space. While renting has its benefits, the dearth of closet space renters routinely must live with is one disadvantage they have versus their homeowning counterparts. While renters might have limited options with respect to how far they can go to improve their closet space, there are ways to create more space in even the tiniest of closets. All it takes is some creativity to make the most out of existing closets. ■ Add a second clothing rod. Closet space can be doubled by simply adding a second rod. And doing so does not require nailing anything into the walls, which should keep landlords happy as well. A second clothing rod works best when hanging shorter items, such as skirts or jackets. Those with two closets should reserve one closet for longer items (such as dresses) and the other for smaller items. ■ Purchase over-door racks. While some people might feel over-door racks have too much of a college dorm room feel, for renters with scarce closet space, that’s simply a concern they must live with. Over-door racks can be thrown over the back of any closet door and do not need to be nailed in, another benefit
for those who don’t want to upset their landlord. ■ Consider closet cubes. Closet cubes can also be a wonderful asset when trying to maximize closet space. Short and often stackable, closet cubes come in a variety of sizes and can hold a number of items. Consider storing seasonal items, such as sweaters, in these closet cubes during the seasons you won’t be wearing them. Simply rearrange your closet with what’s in season to avoid digging through your closet cubes on a daily basis. ■ Use hangable shoe racks. Shoe racks can be hung on a closet rod to reduce the amount of space shoes and sneakers take up. Because footwear is typically stored on a closet floor, this can eliminate valuable storage room for items such as luggage or even closet cubes. A shoe rack can help this space be used to maximize a closet’s efficiency. ■ Clear out the clutter. Clothing items that haven’t seen the light of day in years populate the closets of people across the country. While parting can be sweet sorrow, it can also be a great way to make more room in a cluttered closet. Homeowners can afford to be nostalgic when it comes to their clothes, but apartment dwellers must buck up and clear the closet clutter to make the most of their closet space.

Beauty bailouts abound for women, too The beauty industry is a multibillion dollar business, with American women spending thousands of dollars each year on new products and treatments. Given the current state of the economy, even self-proclaimed “beauty addicts” are rethinking what they spend on lotions and potions. The good news? There is no need to let the recession cause a beauty depression thanks to new products, old favorites and some smart solutions for under $30. ■ Look for multi-purpose products or those with unexpected benefits. Items that feature two key benefits – such as a moisturizer with tint and sunscreen – can be less expensive than buying separate products, and will save you another commodity: time. Makeup artist Petra Strand’s Pixi by Petra collection offers skinbeneficial ingredients and faceawakening color in every product so women can soothe their skin and freshen up their look in one step. ■ Choose a few bright, of-themoment colors to give your look an update. Former model Jemma Kidd offers high-intensity eyeshadow shades within her JK Jemma Kidd collection. Prefer a classic red? Then go for a product with staying power like L’Oreal Paris Infallible Never Fail Lipcolour in Target Red for flashy long wear. Even when paired with last season’s dress, you’ll look au courant! ■ Be smart about choosing colors. Avoid wasted money and the wrong shades with a handpicked palette that really makes sense for your skin tone and style. The NP Set palettes by Napoleon Perdis have step-by-step instructions built into the case so no color goes unused. A makeup lesson by a celebrity makeup artist and smooth, satiny colors perfect for you for just $29? Now

Getting the best for $30 or less that’s a beauty bargain. ■ Take Stock. Keep your cosmetics organized so you know what you have and don’t buy what you don’t need. Rely on the Contents Yellow Bee cosmetic train case made from recycled cotton available exclusively at Target to make storing your beauty essentials easy, chic and eco-friendly. * At-home spa. Skip the spa day price tag and gather some skin-soothing items to lift your spirits right at home. Detox in your tub with Soap & Glory I Foam, an ultra-creamy body wash with orange and grapeseed oils to soothe your body and soul. ■ Protect the beauty investments you make. Are you a fan of salon hair coloring services? Choose products that will help
your color last longer and protect your hair from damage. Color- and heat-protectant shampoos and stylers cost less than a single process haircolor service. Two to try: Umberto Beverly Hills and Ted Gibson. ■ Each hairstylist was once a student. Find a reputable training program in your area and request a student cut. They’re usually free or low-cost. ■ Shop smart to save. Find quality beauty products for less at the same places you buy your fashion must-haves, groceries and electronics. Target, for instance, continues to bring beauty mavens everywhere the best brands from around the globe for less. For more information, or to shop online, log on to www.target.com.

Women can experience hair loss, too
SXC
Sheepskin boots may look good, but can be harmful to feet.
Popular shoes can cause foot damage For years, foot doctors and orthopedists have been chastising women for wearing high heels because of the myriad foot ailments that can result. However, it seems a popular flat shoe can cause a host of foot, back and hip trouble in its own right. Sheepskin boots that are popular to wear during the year, whether Uggs or the multitude of knock-off brands available, may be unhealthy for your feet, say experts. That’s because the boots and similar shoes and slippers provide virtually no support for the arch of the foot. Individuals who have a low arch to begin with may experience further flattening of the arch and resulting foot trouble. What’s more, these shoes also do not provide much support around the ankle or any other part of the foot for that matter. The foot is simply able to slide around in the boot. Eventually this lack of support can cause foot pain, which may travel up the legs into the hip and back. Doctors warn that women, regardless of foot arch, should not wear these boots as their primary shoe source or for long durations of time, especially when doing a lot of walking.

Mention balding and immediately a man with a receding hairline comes to mind. While hair loss is largely a problem for men, women are also prone to hair loss, though generally not in the same patterns as men. Women can lose hair for a number of reasons. Hormonal changes due to pregnancy or even menopause can cause hair loss. Loss of hair from the scalp is generally not a sign of getting older and may need to be professionally diagnosed. Non-pattern types of hair loss are more common in women. A woman may simply discover that more hair is coming out when combing or brushing, or find hair at the bottom of the shower after bathing. The most likely cause of scalp hair loss in both men and women is androgenetic alopecia. It is an inherited sensitivity to the effects of androgens (male hormones) on scalp hair follicles. Women won’t get the “cue-ball” appearance men often get.
However, they may get some sort of patterning to their hair loss, including: ■ Thinning of hair across the entire scalp, most noticeably toward the back. ■ Thinning of hair across the entire scalp, most noticeable in the front, but not affecting the actual hairline. Hair loss also may be the result of other genetic or immune system disorders. It can also occur from stress or compulsive hair-pulling. Thinning of hair can be bothersome for women, particularly because baldness is much more socially acceptable for men than women. Hair loss can cause self-esteem issues and make hair styles difficult to achieve. For women experiencing hair loss, consulting with a hair restoration expert could provide a solution to the problem or at least give women the tools to cosmetically camouflage hair loss. Wigs, weaves and other techniques can be employed to restore the appearance of thicker hair. Metro Creative Connection

Some beauty tips for busy women
MCC
A 2008 study reported women earn 20.1 percent less than their male counterparts.
Women starting to fare better According to the United States Labor Department, in 2008 women’s median earnings were 79.9 percent of men’s. That figure means women earn 20.1 percent less than their male counterparts, and marks an improvement from 2004, when women’s wages were 76.5 percent of men’s wages. Women who are unmarried tend to fare better when compared to their unmarried male counterparts, as unmarried women earned 94.2 percent of unmarried men’s wages. While those figures might seem startling, it’s important to note Labor Department statistics do not take into account differences in experience, skill, occupation, or hours worked. It’s also important to note the current income disparity between men and women represents a significant improvement from as recently as 30 years, when women’s median pay was just 60.2 percent of men’s. That figure rose rapidly between 1980 and 1990, when the disparity in median salary was 71.6 percent. While that progress has not been as rapid over the last 20 years, the disparity continues to shrink. Metro Creative Connection
Women are juggling much more today than in years past. According to U.S. Census Bureau reports from 2002, 31 percent of married couples with children are twoincome families, and many women are balancing work, family, social obligations, and additional activities. This can leave little time for personal grooming. However, looking good doesn’t require a lot of time or money. Women who focus a certain areas can put their best face forward despite being under a time crunch. ■ Invest in a good haircut. Consult with a stylist who knows his or her stuff. Ask for recommendations on what cut will work for a specific facial shape, lifestyle and trends. For example, a woman who is time-pressed does not want a ‘do that requires 40 minutes of blow-drying every morning. Work with the hair type instead of against it. Investing in a good cut is a beauty secret every woman should know. ■ Select dual-purpose products. Saving time can often mean using beauty products that serve more than one purpose. For example, a moisturizer that’s also a sunblock saves on the extra step of apply-

Even busy women should always make time for personal grooming. ing SPF. Some mineral powder products serve as a foundation and a oil-reducing finish coat. For women who want to skip a foundation, tinted moisturizers are also an option. ■ Play up the eyes. Bright eyes give the impression of being well-rested and
healthy. Any time spent time on a beauty regimen should be spent adding some impact to the eyes, even if this just means using some mascara and applying a highlight under the browline and in the corners of the eyes. Don’t forget to cover under-eye circles if they are a problem. ■ Don’t overlook hands. Hands have a way of giving away a woman’s age. Many women who use age-defying products or enlist in the help of plastic surgery fail to realize that their hands can reveal their age. Always moisturize and care for the hands. Routine manicures can help tame cuticles and keep nails and hands in top form. Use sun protection on hands to avoid wrinkling and age spots from sun exposure. ■ Whiten teeth. Putting a fresh-face forward also involves having a great smile. There are many inexpensive, over-thecounter whitening products that can lighten the shade of teeth dramatically. They can be used while you’re taking care of other tasks, such as laundry or making dinner, maximizing time. Metro Creative Connection

The right fit for the average-sized woman Spring and summer collections fill the stores and the start of bathing suit season has begun. Many women will be flocking to area retailers to add to their warm-weather wardrobes. But will they find the sizes they need? The average-sized North American woman wears between a 12 and a 14 dress size and weighs about 163 pounds. However, the scores of fashion brands and trendy stores fail to cater to this growing demographic. Most fashion-forward boutiques and mainstream designers only offer clothing up to a size 10. If they do offer larger sizes, there are minimal styles and possibilities available, and the stock could be “hidden” in the back storeroom. According to Trendex, sales of plus-size clothing account for 20 to 25 percent of the overall women’s market. While some stores, such as Lane Bryant, Avenue and Fashion Bug, cater to the plus-sized market, most women who wear larger sizes are relegated to purchasing matronly items from big-box retailers like Wal-Mart or Target. Fashion forecasters say that designers simply do not have the time or inclination to let plus-size lines evolve. Also, producing larger sizes isn’t simply a matter of making smaller sizes bigger. In sizes 16 or above, the silhouette of clothing changes, with more girth in the middle. Designers have to accommodate for this and work with
completely different patterns. According to statistics, Baby Boomers (those between ages 35 and 54) make up 28 percent of Canada’s population. Women in this age group alone make up 31 percent of the Canadian population and are America’s leading consumers. What’s more, these established individuals tend to have higher incomes and more spending money than others, making them an ideal target for retailers. Until the fashion industry catches up with the average-sized woman, there are certain ways for women to dress their bodies if they are searching for fitting clothes: ■ Fit the largest size of the body. This may require shopping for bottoms in plus-size departments and tops in the regular ladies department. ■ Develop a relationship with the tailor. Tailoring clothing can get the best-desired fit. ■ Consider shopping online. Many plus-sized boutiques cater to women through the Internet. The downside is that the buyer cannot feel the clothing before purchasing. However, check to see if they have a free return policy. ■ Avoid styles that are built around stick-thin or boyframed women. Average-sized women need styles that work with curves. Avoid tapered or low-rise pants. ■ Skirts and dresses may give more wiggle room and are easier to fit than slacks. Metro Creative Connection

Ways to remove unwanted hair Ironically, as a woman ages the hair on the top of her head may thin, while the hair that grows on other parts of her body may become coarser and more apparent. This is due to the declining amount of estrogen in her body. Other hormones may increase, contributing to hair formation on the face, chin, and other parts of the body. Unwanted hair can be a nemesis to women. While in certain cultures body hair is perfectly acceptable, most women desire to remove hair from their bodies in a number of ways. In fact, in North America alone, it is estimated that consumers spend 1 billion dollars a year on electrolysis. If unwanted hair is a problem or grows quickly, women can consider permanent removal methods, such as laser treatments, electrolysis or prescription topical treatments. However, if the hair is minimal or not troublesome, temporary methods, such as shaving, tweezing, waxing and depilatory creams, can be effective. Body hair also can be camouflaged by having it bleached. Lighter hair will not stand out as much as darker hair.
