HEALTH COACH TIP OF THE MONTH SMC would like to thank the community for their attendance at the Healthy Lung Event on November 20th. November was the observance month for two of the chronic health conditions most prevalent in our county, as well as in America: COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and DIABETES. Our tip of the month for January is to remind our community about healthy living, whether you are at risk for, or live with one of these conditions. If you are overweight, have high blood pressure, or are age 45 or older you are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is that making healthy changes will greatly lower your risk or help to manage your condition: - watch your weight - eat healthy - get more active (30 minutes or more per day) If you have COPD or are at risk because you smoke, work in air pollution, have a genetic tendency for it, COPD can be prevented or symptoms treated by: - stopping smoking - getting your flu and pneumonia vaccines - becoming as physically active as possible - educating yourself - obtaining support SMC clinic staff will be glad to help with any one of these healthy changes.
