This the fourth year in a row that Dairy Queen had claimed the No. 1 position. According to Madison Avenue location owner Jim Walsh, it’s no accident. “It’s an honor to be chosen again, but we work hard to maintain that spot,” he said. The emphasis has always been on providing the best product possible, and Walsh said the payoff comes from customer loyalty. 2.) Bayliss hot dog stand, location varies. 3.) Sonic Restaurant, 3445 W. Favorite Asian food 1.) HuHot Mongolian Grill, 3120 Manawa Center Drive, (712) 309-0100, has won the firstplace award two times and has only been in Council Bluffs for three years. “That’s so cool,” general manager Julie DeWittKroska said. The Mongolian grill offers a style of stir fry cooking first used by nomadic Mongolians, but adapted for today’s diners. Customers select vegetables, beef, chicken, fish and other items and the cooks will prepare the meal “fresh and hot” in about three minutes. However, it’s not just the food that draws the customers. “We have enough selection for anyone’s tastes, but we’re fun. We try to make it more of a personal thing when people eat here. The servers, the cooks, everyone is fun here,” she said.

Favorite pharmacy 1.) Wal-Mart SuperCenter, 3201 Manawa Centre Drive, (712) 366-3326. About two years ago, Wal-Mart began a program that lowered prescription drug costs. “Wal-Mart was the catalyst for $4 prescriptions,” said Linda Rhatigan, community involvement coordinator. “Before then, a lot of drugs had cost more.” Today, other firms have followed what Wal-Mart began, she said. “Wal-Mart was the catalyst for that program, the frontrunner for people to help with high prices,” Rhatigan said. “It’s nice to know you can get prescriptions for $4.” Wal-Mart has a large staff of highly trained professionals, she said, and the pharmacy is conveniently open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. 2.) 1.) Mall of the Bluffs, 1751 Madison Ave., (712) 323-9986. Area folks have indicated there is more in store when they shop at Mall of the Bluffs. Besides the nationally known chains – Dillard’s, Sears and Target, there are more than 100 specialty shops and other famous name stores like Old Navy, The Children’s Place, Hot Topic, Victoria’s Secret, Barnes & Noble Booksellers and Panera Bread. One of its stores, Famous Footwear, was chosen this year as the area’s favorite place to buy shoes. “We’re honored for this award,” said Lyle Karre, general manager. “Mall of the Bluffs has been in Council Bluffs for 22 years and we do a lot of community events. We’ve been a strong community center for 22 years.” As part of its dedication to serve the community, the center holds events during Fire Prevention Week. “There are 75 different retailers covering everything clothing, shoes, video games, everything,” Karre said. “It’s a good family shopping center.”

The striking new addition to the south side of Council Bluffs is considered part museum, part art gallery, part education, conservation and entertainment center. “We don’t want to be just a traditional retailer,” said Jim Goff, retail store manager. “We don’t just sell you something; we’ll show you how to use it.
