Pizza maker Levi Gates carefully slices through a meat lover’s pizza to make Pizza King’s signature square slices. The restaurant won first place in the best pizza category.

Favorite overall restaurant 1.) Pizza King, 1101 N. Broadway, (712) 323-4911. Pizza King’s name could confuse a first-timer, since the restaurant offers steaks, seafood, burgers, chicken, and sandwiches. However, customers have named Pizza King their favorite overall restaurant. Co-owner Pete Poulos said part of the reason may be “we’re reasonably priced for families. You don’t have to spend a ton of money.” However, he joked that the real secret to Pizza King’s overall popularity is “my overall personality.” 2.) Applebee’s, 3000 Dial Drive, (712) 366-1250. 3.) La Mesa, 3036 S. Expressway, (712) 256-2762.

Favorite pizza 1.) Pizza King, 1101 N. Broadway, (712) 323-4911. Co-owner Pete Poulos thinks the old family recipe used by the restaurant helped to keep Pizza King in first place again this year. “I’d say pizza is 35 percent, 40 per of the business,” Poulos said. Customers also like the pizza’s thin crust and the use of wholemilk cheese. 2.) Godfather’s Pizza, 34 Pearl St., (712) 328-9566. 3.) Pizza Counter, 520 E. Broadway, (712) 323-7245; 610 W. Waitress Beckie Edie holds a plate of Red Lobster’s Maui Luau Salmon and Shrimp. The restaurant won reader’s choice for favorite seafood.

Favorite salad bar 1.) Ruby Tuesday, 3150 24th Ave., (712) 328-0046. Candy Jones, one of the managers at Ruby Tuesday, said “We probably did so well because we continually make sure everything in our garden bar is fresh. We put it up fresh daily.” In addition, an attendant watches the garden bar “and we’ll bring in more fresh items as needed,” Jones said. She pointed out the approach traditionally has worked well to keep customers happy, since Ruby Tuesday also took the top spot in 2007. 2.) Hy-Vee, 1745 Madison Ave., (712) 322-9260; 1706 N. 16th Ave., (712) 328-9792. 3.) Golden Corral, 3103 Dial Drive, (712) 366-1832.

Favorite seafood 1.) Red Lobster, 3040 Dial Drive, (712) 366-5911. This is the fourth year in a row Red Lobster has nailed down

the first-place position for seafood. Heather Gross, beverage and hospitality manager, said she is convinced it’s because of the quality of the food as well as the employees. “This is very exciting. I think we’re consistent with our food and with our service,” she said. She said Red Lobster wants to win next year, too: “We’re going to shoot for five.” 2.) Long John Silver’s, 603 32nd Ave., (712) 366-6567; 1905 W. Broadway, (712) 325-0850. 3.) Pizza King, 1101 N. Broadway, (712) 323-4911.

Favorite steak 1.) Pizza King, 1101 N. Broadway, (712) 323-4911. While Pizza King obviously serves pizza, the restaurant serves steaks, too. So should the fact that “all of our selections are made fresh on premises.” “The Heritage Buffet Sunday Champagne Brunch offers a wide variety of freshly made items. Devitt and his team are known for their in-house smoked salmon, prime rib, shrimp cocktail, eggs benedict, and made-to-order omelets. Altogether, the company offers 275 years of professional accounting experience, Dickinson said, plus 750 hours of continual education. That’s important for accuracy, according to Dickinson, because only one-fourth of 1 percent of their tax clients ever experience an audit. “We’ve had strong growth over the last five years,” Dickinson said. 2.) Knox, who has more than 40 years experience in this occupation, has seen many changes. For example, when he started back in the mid1960s, the appraisal could be done on one legal-size paper attached with a single poloraid photo of the structure. Today, it’s not uncommon to fill out up to 30 pages with as many as 12 photographs. For a greener, healthier, thicker lawn next year

WHY?

• Decrease in disease activity is likely. • Improved stress tolerance. • Increased rhizome-tiller development. • Deeper, stronger roots. • Extends the greening of the turf later into the fall and winter. • Spring green-up will normally occur earlier. • Provides root development until the ground freezes.
