Improvements that offer more convenience for customers are on the way, Ballenger said. “We’re looking at adding credit card swipes at our selfserve bays,” he said. “The reality is, quarters can be a hassle. People have debit and credit cards on them, and” using cards is sometimes easier than carrying cash. “I’’d like to say thank you to the Council Bluffs community,” he said. “Our family has had a business in the community since 1926, so we appreciate the community’s support.” 2.) FOOD Favorite barbecue 1.) Readers say the best barbecue in town is at Famous Dave’s, 50 Arena Way, (712) 256-1221. “We pride ourselves not only in providing great quality food but also excellent service,” said Jodi Klimiuk, general manager. The employees are trained in all aspects of the restaurant’s operation, including food preparation, according to Klimiuk. That way, they can offer the diner expert advice in choosing the right meal for any occasion. “We take the time and effort to do the extra things.” Almost the entire menu is hand prepared right there, she added. 2.) Boxer Barbeque Co., 722 Creek Top, (712) 325-4227. 3.) Hog Shop, 3621 Ninth Ave., (712) 328-2277.

Broadway, (712) 328-7377; 1906 Rue St., (712) 388-9301. “We strive to serve the best breakfast in the community,” said John Harshbarger, an associate manager. “We want to be the best place for dining out,” said Harshbarger. “Our vision is to take care of our guests by providing the best family dining experience.” Currently, diners can enjoy the “Incredible VIB,” (Village Inn Breakfast), Harshbarger said. Diners can create their own special breakfast by choosing four different items from the menu for only $5.99. “That’s pretty incredible,” Harshbarger said. 2.) Duncan’s Café, 501 S. It’s very exciting that people appreciate us.” Terrific products, knowledgeable and friendly salespeople, and the constant search for the latest trends are all factors why this family-run business is so successful, Hughes said. And, she made sure her staff in the furniture department got praise. “They do an extremely good job. We hope we’re pleasing everyone.” 2.) Nebraska Furniture Mart, 700 S. 72nd St. (Omaha), (402) 397-6100. 3.) Bushman’s Carpet, 517 Ninth Ave., (712) 322-1991.

Schomburg and three employees started the shop 11 years ago, and the four remain the only employees. With a wide selection of merchandise – including home décor, fragrances, candles, a baby room and a kitchen room – there is something at the store for everyone. “We might have a little space, but it is packed with things,” Schomburg joked. “I hope that is the reason the readers selected us,” she added. “What we have is different from every other store and unique. “Unique is what we strive for; we want our items to be not like anything else our customers have seen.” 2.) Bambi Behm is the owner of Bambi’s Green Acres, 805 S. Main St., which was voted favorite health food store. Madison Ave., (712) 322-9260, and 1706 N. 16th St., (712) 3289792, was chosen as the best place to pick up groceries. With a new store on West Broadway opening this fall, Mitch Streit, store manager at Madison Avenue, said HyVee continues to try to keep Council Bluffs residents satisfied with their grocery shopping experience. “Hy-Vee has put our money into making sure our current customers in Council Bluffs get what they want,” he said. “And we think we have the most variety of any store in the area.” With the number of departments growing every day, HyVee boasts Italian and Chinese food at their Madison store, as well as Starbucks, a fresh salad bar, butcher shop and health market. “Our organic section is unique to Council Bluffs,” Streit added. “Not to mention we have several employees that are level three wine specialists.” Imported cheeses, a dietician, a pharmacy, Streit could go on and on.
“We provide a lot of services,” he said. “And we think our employees are the friendliest people we can get; they are a great mix of high quality people, from high school students to adults.” While customer service is a big draw, savings also play an important role, Streit added. “We are constantly working to find better deals for our customers.” 2.) Dan Hanusa, one of five owners of the store, said the business has a longstanding commitment to Council Bluffs. “We have been in business for 80 years, and we have built a lot of relationships,” he said. Hanusa said he is appre-
ciative that the community recognized his family’s efforts. “I think we give our customers the service they need, whether they need something cut, soldered or fabricated, we can do it,” he said. “People come here because they can’t find this service elsewhere.” And, in the unlikely event that Hanusa Hardware can’t do the job, Dan Hanusa said they will find someone who
1.) Bambi’s Green Acres Natural Market, 805 S. Main St., (712) 323-5799, was chosen as the best place to pick up healthy food. This is the seventh time the readers have selected Green Acres in this category. “Seven times in a row, and I still appreciate it,” owner Bambi Behm said. Behm said she thinks customers keep selecting her store, and returning to her business, because she strives to give personal service. “I think people keep choosing us because when they come in, they like that we know who they are, and we know what they are dealing with, not only in their lives nutritionally, but as well as their families,” she said. They also know they will get the truth, Behm added, and if she doesn’t have the answer she will find it for the customer. “My customers know they can trust me,” she added. “That is probably the key.” 2.)
