Problematic Child Behavior:

‘Time In’ or ‘Time Out’? Most parents can probably relate to the challenges of raising children. It seems at times that in addition to normal day-to-day stressors, there are other times when kids know just how to push your buttons and get on your last nerve. So what are some helpful and healthy ways to respond?

“Time Out”/”Time In” Most of us have probably heard about using “time out” with our children. This can be a very helpful parenting technique for both parents and children. It allows both the parent and the child time to cool down and regulate their emotions. What about when the “time out” with our child is over? Are there things we can we do to keep these problematic behaviors from returning? I would suggest the idea of “time in” with our children as a prevention technique.

쎲 Positive Behavior (want to increase) • What makes it better?: Giving attention, catch them being good, give rewards, use specific praise (called labeled praise), such as: 쑺 Good job putting your dishes in the sink! 쑺 You did that well! You did your chore the first time that I asked. 쑺 I’m proud of you! You walked away when your brother was being annoying. 쑺 What makes it worse?: Ignoring. Don’t miss praising them when they are being good. 쎲 Annoying Behavior (want to decrease)

By Sharon Heckathorn Associate Clinical Director Heartland Family Service

Here are a few simple ideas to keep in mind when thinking about “time in” with children. 쎲 Change locations: Take your child away from the “time out” spot and find a new place to start your “time in.” 쎲 Use a low and reassuring tone of voice: When you’re calm, your child can be calm. 쎲 Teach your child how to give words to their feelings: This will help them tell you what they need in the future rather than acting out in anger or frustration. Children’s behaviors always have meaning. 쎲 Stay with your child until they are regulated and ready to return to their day: Don’t under estimate being with your child and saying nothing at all.

Match Parenting to Behavior In addition to “time in” with your child, think about matching your parenting techniques to the type of behavior that they are displaying.

쑺 What makes it better?: Ignoring and implementing natural and logical consequences.

쑺 What makes it worse?: Giving attention. 쎲 Dangerous Behavior (want to remove) • What makes it better?: Immediate discipline and/or consequences, such as: 쑺 Time out 쑺 Loss of privilege 쑺 Behavior contracts

• What makes it worse?: Ignoring or exhibiting aggressive behavior toward the child.

What does it mean to be a mentor? Mentors can serve as trusted confidantes to young people in need of professional guidance, providing the support or advice many need to break into a given industry. While mentoring is most commonly associated with the professional arena, it need not be restricted to corporate environments. When looking to give back to their communities, men and women may not think of mentoring. However, mentoring can be a powerful empowerment and personal development tool, for both mentors and the people being mentored. The following are a handful of tips to foster a successful mentoring relationship. • Ask a lot of questions. Mentors should expect to field a lot of questions, but they also should ask their share of questions. Asking questions is a good way to challenge people and get them thinking about various scenarios and situations they may find themselves in. This will help shape the person you’re mentoring into an individual who can anticipate situations and deal with them on his or her own.

• Enjoy the experience. Mentors benefit from mentoring, which can provide satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment that results from knowing you played an integral role in the success of another person. If your career is in a slump, mentoring may provide the breath of fresh air you need to recharge. Mentoring also may give you insight into another person’s life, which can be used in your own personal development. As long as your goal is the success and support of the mentee, mentoring can be a selfless act that touches the lives of others. Formal mentoring programs exist, but mentoring relationships often begin when a less formal connection forms between two people. Should a friend, employee or colleague ask for your assistance in mentoring, embrace this compliment and make the most of your opportunity to aide in the growth of another person. (Article from Metro Creative services)

• Ensure confidentiality. Confidentiality should be of paramount importance in a mentoring relationship. The person you’re mentoring should feel comfortable coming to you with any situation and have your support, as trust is essential to the mentor-mentee relationship. • Stretch a person’s abilities. The goal of a mentor is not to solve all of his or her mentee’s problems. Delegate tasks and provide advice to lead the mentee in the right direction. Encourage a mentee to take on more responsibilities, which can instill confidence and facilitate personal growth.

Mentors can serve as advisors and counselors with regard to personal and professional affairs.

Focusing on whole health care Have you ever felt anxious or depressed? When was the last time you visited your doctor for a regular check-up? Do you eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables every day? When was the last time you took a walk or otherwise got some exercise? For many of us, these questions are easy to answer. For others, they make us uncomfortable because we know we have room to improve. Health is more than your weight, blood pressure and good nutrition. All aspects of your health are important to consider when you think about your whole health. What is whole health? Whole health is your entire wellbeing. When health care providers consider your physical and mental health at the same time, it is called “integrated care.” They focus on your total health needs: physical health, mental health and social support needs.

registered nurse on the team is the expert on medical health, healthy behaviors and medications. Peer support specialists are those who have lived with a mental illness and have specialized training in supporting their peers. Together, this team supports and coordinates care for program members. Iowa’s Integrated Health Home initiative started in July 2013. Since then, the number of emergency room visits and inpatient hospitalization days have reduced for those enrolled in the program across the state. IHH members are accessing preventive care more often and using the emergency room less. Members report that they know more about their own health and medications, impacting their whole health and wellness.
