Denison Aquatic Fun Center celebrates 20th birthday this summer

Sunday, August 1: Honoring moms – first 20 moms admitted free Along with the special events, the Denison Aquatic Fun Center, located at 710 North 16th Street, continues to be a place where children and adults can have fun swimming and playing in the water, but it offers much more than that.

The outdoor pools, children’s pool, mini-golf and sand volleyball court are open through August 17.

Hours for all pools and facilities are from 1 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday through Friday and from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Additionally, the indoor pool is open from 5 to 7 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The following are some features of the aquatic center.

Indoor pool Water is heated to 86 degrees in this six-lane pool.

Two laps lanes are open all the time. Additional lap lanes are open in the early morning, midmorning and at night.

Other features include water basketball, water volleyball, a tot dock area for young children, a sauna and a whirlpool heated to 103 degrees.

The pool offers easy access with steps going into the water, and there’s also a hydraulic lift that people can use, if needed, to get into the pool or the whirlpool.

The indoor pool ranges from three feet to 10 feet deep.

You don’t have to swim to enjoy the indoor pool.

Some adults use only the sauna and whirlpool.

A phone is provided for children to call their parents.

For their security, people may bring their own padlocks or can rent one from the pool office for

Outdoor pool Children and adults alike have easy access to the water through a zero elevation entry off the sunning beach.

The maximum depth is 12 feet at the diving end. The outdoor pool features a one-meter board.

Water is heated to 75-80 degrees, but on warm summer days the heater is turned off and the pool staff lets the sun do the work.

Perhaps the most popular features for children are the two 150-foot slides that empty into a separate catch pool.

The children’s pool features five bubbly geysers; a slide in the shape of a frog, called “Freddie the Frog;” and a mushroom fountain. There’s also a shaded area. The children’s pool is gated.

Mini-Golf This fun activity is included with the admission. The 18-hole course is great for children and adults of all ages.

Sand volleyball This area allows people

to get up a team and challenge others to a rousing game, and then cool off in the pool.

Like mini-golf, use of the sand volleyball area is also included with admission.

Concessions The aquatic center staffs a concession stand that can be accessed from indoors and outdoors.

Water exercises and swimming lessons People can also use the indoor pool at aquatic center for some serious workouts.

Water exercise classes are offered from 4 to 5 p.m. on Monday; 5:30 to 6:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and from 5:15 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

The exercise classes are taught by a water exercise instructor.

Red Cross swimming lessons are offered for people ages six months through adult. Session I is from June 21-July 1. Session II is from July 12-22.

The fee is $22 per child and $25 per adult. Classes are taught by certified Water Safety Instructors.

classes are taught for children ages six months to three years. Preschool classes are for children ages 4-5 and prepares preschoolers for Levels I and II. Swim team A summer swim team is also offered. The swim team season begins June 1 and lasts until July 10.

Home swim meets are scheduled for June 8 against Carroll, June 15 against Manning, June 24 against Sac City and July 6 against Jefferson. The indoor pool closes to the public at 4:50 p.m. and the outdoor pool closes at 6:30 p.m. on home meet days.

Away meets are June 10 at

Guthrie Center, June 17 at Perry, June 22 at Glidden, June 29 at Coon Rapids and July 1 at Southern Cal. Other details Water Safety Instructor (WSI) classes are also taught at the aquatic center. Aquatics Director Patti K. Boettger is certified to teach WSI. The WSI classes draw people from throughout the region.

The Denison Aquatic Fun Center employs American Red Cross certified lifeguards. Lifeguards train all summer and have staff meetings every two weeks (once a month during the winter). Guards also train before their shift.

For people’s safety, water is tested every two hours and once a month a water sample is sent to the Iowa Department of Health.

The pools are designed for water efficiency. Other than water that evaporates and is splashed out of the pool, all water is recycled through a large outdoor pump room.

In order to keep the Aquatic Fun Center fun, and for safety, there are rules to follow. One paramount rule is that all children age six years and younger must be accompanied by a person 13 years old or older, in and out of the water, and at arm’s length from the child.

Boettger explained that each lifeguard has his or her own zone to scan, and it may take 60-90 seconds to scan a zone.

If a young child goes under the water, he or she could be under for several seconds before the guard scans that area of the zone again.

“We have trained lifeguards, but they can’t have their eyes on every person in the pool at the same time,” Boettger stated.

An Independence Day celebration is planned to take

place at Yellow Smoke Park on Saturday, July 3. Family friendly events are planned throughout the day and fireworks will take place at 10 p.m. The festivities are being presented by the Denison Tourism Board.

Fishing in Crawford County Mid-May through the June 15 will offer some of the best fishing at Crawford County’s ponds and lakes because fish are active the water is warming up.

Later in the season, fish are more difficult to catch because they reside deeper in the water where it is cooler.

Oxygen levels also play an important role.

Fishing licenses are required for all resident anglers 16 and older when fishing at public and private waterways in Iowa. Many retailers offer the licenses for sale at the cost of $17.50, season-long; $12, seven-day; or $8, one day.

Free Fishing Days in 2010 for Iowa residents are Friday, June 4 through Sunday, June 6.

Catfish: available at Yellow Smoke park, which is stocked every other year by the Iowa DNR with approximately 4,000 eight-inch catfish. Nelson Park is also stocked with about 1,200 catfish each year. Baits: night

crawlers, chicken or beef liver, and commercial stink bait.

Bluegill: good size bluegill are available throughout the month of June for the best fishing and reproduce naturally in the lakes. Baits: small worm on a small hook.

Bass: legal size is 15 inches and many anglers are catching legal or undersized fish. Baits: artificial lures that mimic a minnows, frogs, tadpoles, or crayfish; minnows; and night crawlers.

Fish for large-mouth bass, catfish, bluegill, crappie and white bass.

July 3, a day of fun under the sun at Yellow Smoke Park The Denison Tourism Board has planned a day of fun on Saturday, July 3, at Yellow Smoke Park east of Denison.

From a 5K run in the morning to a spectacular fireworks display at 10 p.m., the July 3 celebration has something for every member of the family.

The schedule of events includes: Firecracker 5K run and 2 Mile Run/Walk: Registration at 6:30 a.m., race begins at 7:30 p.m. at the beach house.

Izaak Walton League (Clarence Bartlett Chapter) Fishing Tournament: Registration at 8 a.m. at the boat dock, tournament from 8 to 11 a.m., and weigh-in at the east side of the shelter house. For children under the age of 16. Awards given to age groups based on fish caught. Door prizes awarded.

Hot dogs, pop and chips available to participants after weigh-in.

Sandcastle Contest: For children ages 12 and under, begins at 1 p.m. at the Yellow Smoke Lake beach.

Awards presented for tallest, longest, prettiest and most unique castles. Divisions for children 0-3, 46 and 7-12. All participants will receive an award.

Sand Volleyball Tournament: Registration at 2:30 p.m., tournament begins at 3 p.m. at the east end of the beach. Entry fee $50 per six-member team (at least two members must be women). Teams that don’t pre-register by June 16 are not guaranteed a shirt. Cash awards of $75 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.

“Sink or Float” Cardboard Boat Race: Registration at 4 p.m., boat judging at 4:30 p.m., race begins at 5 p.m., at west end of beach. Use your ingenuity and duct-taping and gluing skills to construct a boat from cardboard. Boats may be propelled by paddles or oars; no sales, motors, paddlewheels, poles or help from anyone outside the boat crew.

Crews must consist of at least two people who must be inside the boat. Participants must wear Coast Guard approved life preservers and wear sneakers or appropriate water shoes. Entry fee $15 per boat if postmarked by June 16. A deposit of $10 is included in the registration and will be refunded upon satisfactory removal of all cardboard. Awards given in speed races for Kid’s Challenge (open to children under 15) and Free-for-All (open to all); most outrageous design; and most spectacular sinking. Examples of a constructed boat on display at Crawford County Trust & Savings Bank, Bank Iowa and Cronk’s Café.

Western Stampede Carnival and Crafts: 7 to 9 p.m. at Yellow Smoke Nature Center. Kids can play carnival games, make crafts, have a picture or design painted on their face, and spend their tickets in the Western General Store for great prizes. $1 buys five tickets. Kids and adults can view the “Salute to Songbirds” exhibit at the Nature Center. A food stand will serve walking tacos, nachos, popcorn, pop and bottled water.

Live entertainment by the Road Haus Band: 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the beach house.

Fireworks: 10 p.m.

Stop by Denison City Hall at 111 North Main to pick up a brochure containing contest registration forms and a complete listing of rules.

“Make a Splash – Read!”

Norelius Community Library summer reading program starts June 16 Kids who have completed kindergarten through grade five can register now to be part of the Norelius Community Library 2010 summer reading program called “Make a Splash – Read!” that takes place over five weeks beginning June 16.

In keeping with the theme, children will explore the world of water – including oceans, rivers, lakes, pools, and the creatures that live there – and water fun through stories, songs, games and other activities.

The focus of each week is as follows: Week 1 Set sail for the library Week 2 Catch the reading wave Week 3 Splish, splash reading bash Week 4 Ahoy readers Week 5 Splash into reading During the summer reading program, hour long programs on Wednesdays will be activ-

ity-filled. Fridays are come-and-go craft days, with morning or afternoon time slots.

A reading log will be provided to keep track of time spent reading. Some great prizes will be awarded based on the amount of reading time logged.

Best of all, children will be able to maintain their reading levels during the summer; that way they are better prepared when it is time to head back to school.

If your child is in kindergarten or first grade, and is still struggling to read, you are encouraged to read with them. This time is acceptable to record in the reading log.

Families are encouraged to help their child find time to read.

A separate program is available for preschoolers.

by Gordon Wolf Residents of and visitors to Denison on Saturday, June 19, may think they’ve gone back in time five decades when “Rewind to the ‘60s” takes place. A committee consisting of representatives from the Chamber and Development Council (CDC), the Donna Reed Foundation, the Denison and Crawford County tourism boards and other groups has been busy planning a day of fun events for the entire family. The celebration follows in the same theme as last year’s “Rewind to the ‘50s” events.

Events include a parade, a ‘60s display and luncheon, a beach party and a concert by The Fabulous Thunderbolts.

The tentative schedule of events includes: 10 a.m.: Parade in uptown Denison. All entries are encouraged. Pre-registration is not necessary to enter the parade. However, the best pre-registered '60s theme entry will win $200. Visit Lake View and beautiful Black Hawk Lake

by Jane Croll Every day's a vacation day at beautiful Black Hawk Lake in Lake View. In just a few minutes you can travel to the southern most glacial lake in the United States for a day, weekend, week or month.

Whatever your leisure time pleasure, you will find it in Lake View. Stop by City Hall, Rail Trail kiosk or Camp Crescent Campground to get a map of the area to plan your days of fun.

New places to stay in Lake View include four suites added to Tjaden Motel on Highway71/175. Boulders Inn and Suites at Lake View is located off Highway 71/175 and M54. This 32-room hotel opened in May. Reservations are being taken at both Tjaden Motel and Boulders Inn and Suites.

You're sure to pick a spot for a picnic in the park.

Choose from Speaker Park, Denison Beach, Ice House Point, Gun Shot Hill, 30 Acres and Lake Arrowhead. If you haven't packed food, stop by downtown Lake View to get some goodies at the food store and restaurants.

While you're there, browse in the gift shops for some souvenirs. Lake View's downtown streetscape project was completed in 2009, including new streets, sidewalks, pavers, lights, benches, trees and plantings.

Take in the view of Town Bay and relax a little on the two historic Stone Piers built by the Civil Conservation Corp (CCC) during the Great Depression. Restored in 1999, the fieldstone structures provide a favorite place to fish and watch birds. During the April Pelican Fest, more than 30 different species of birds were identified in one Sunday afternoon.

If fishing is your sport, you'll want to cast a line for some of Iowa's finest. Walleye, crappies, bullheads catfish, bass and blue gill are hungry for your hook. Claim your favorite fishing spot and try out the floating handicap accessible dock on the north area of Ice House Point.

Spot the birds and watch the wildlife. Beautiful eagles, waterfowl, swans, blue herons and pelicans can be seen

from Town Bay, Cottonwood Point and Provost Slough in the Black Hawk Lake area and in the Hallett Pits area south of Lake View.

Have a boat? Float it in Black Hawk Lake for an afternoon of relaxation. All sorts of water craft utilize the lake. Boat ramps are located at 30 Acres, Ice House Point, the Marina and Crescent Beach in Town Bay. If swimming is your sport, jump right in at Crescent Park Town Beach, 30 Acres, Sac or Denison Beach. Swim, sunbathe or build your sand castle, it's all in an afternoon in the sun.

Take a tour and see the great outdoors.

Walk or pedal your bicycle on the Sauk Rail Trail-a 33-mile recreation trail that connects Black Hawk State Park and Swan lake State Park south of Carroll.

Another good walking area is the Stub Severson Trail. The entrance is at the base of the Outlook Tower which is fieldstone roundhouse on a hill overlooking old fish hatcheries. A new sidewalk leads to the lookout which is often referred to as the "Witches Tower."

Perhaps history is your thing.

Lake View Historical Museum offers a unique display of 130 bird species, stuffed and mounted. A restored 1870 log cabin stands on the grounds as a memorial to pioneer families. The museum is open Memorial Day to Labor Day, Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m. Special arrangements can be made for visiting the museum by calling 712-657-8031 or 712-657-2220.

Have your photo taken with the Chief Black Hawk stat-

ue on the edge of Camp Crescent. This 11-foot historic icon was sculpted in 1934 as a part of the WPA Arts program under the direction of Grant Wood.

Now if you're worn out from your day of fun, pitch a tent or park your RV in one of the campgrounds. Camp Crescent in Town Bay is walking distance to downtown and provides a swimming beach, boat ramp and picnic area and Boulder Beach mini-golf course.

Thirty Acres, the state campground, is located on the southeast side of Black Hawk Lake. Recently renovated camping spaces make this tree-rich spot a favorite to call home for a weekend or week of congenial camping. Managed by the DNR, this campground offers a boat ramp, a beach, stone picnic shelter and a good stretch of lakeshore.

Mark your calendars for July 16, 17 and 18 and plan to be in Lake View for the 57th Annual Black Hawk Lake Summer Water Carnival. Each year thousands gather for street parade, art-in-the-park, mud volleyball, Little Miss Black Hawk Pageant, live music, amusement rides, food court, beer garden and Dragon Boat Races. Plus the one-of-a-kind Parade of Water Floats on Saturday, July 17 at dusk.

Majestic Hills offers recreation, challenges for golfers

by Gordon Wolf Nestled in the hills of southeast Denison, Majestic Hills Golf Course features 18 holes of challenging yet enjoyable recreation and sport.

The 18-hole, par 71 public course is located on Donna Reed Drive, about a third of a mile south of Highway 30.

The course blends par 3, par 4 and par 5 holes in a lay-out to take advantage of the natural geography of the area.

Many holes have a choice of four tee boxes – for seniors, women, average golfers and low handicap.

Depending on the tee box you choose, the length of all 18 holes ranges from 5,072 to 6,417 yards.

The USGA course rating

is 67 and the USGA slope is 113.

One of the unique features and strengths of the course is that the last four holes are good finish holes, said Tim Kinsey, the course manager.

Hole #15 is a long par 5, 544 yards. Trees surround the green and the pond runs along your right side as you face the green.

Hole #16 is a 170-yard par 3. You have to carry the pond, which is a long carry, and the green is small.

Hole #17 is a 389-yard par 4. The out-ofbounds lies all the way up the side and it is difficult to hit the green on the second shot.

With 382 yards to cover to make par 4, hole #18 features out-of-bounds

to the right and a narrow opening to the green.

Majestic Hills Golf Course has five par 3 holes, but don’t let those lull you into complacency.

All of the par 3 holes offer challenges and vary greatly in length.

“The par 3s are an integral part of the course,” said Kinsey.

One of the more difficult par 3 holes is hole #16 (see above).

At 110 yards and with a large green, hole #4 might seem easy, but golfers have to face a crosswind. The hole goes back to the east, and the wind is usually blowing hard from right to left (or from the south to the north).

the ball hits the bank on the green, it will roll back. “It takes a perfect shot for the ball to land on the green and for the golfer to get it to stay there,� said Kinsey.

The other par 3 holes are #12 (208 yards), and #13 (140 yards).

The wind creates challenges on holes #5 and #14 (both par 5 and 482 yards) by making the holes play longer than the yards suggest. The golfer

is often hitting into the wind and the greens sit up on hills.

Anytime a golfer faces an elevated green at Majestic Hills, they can count on the wind as one of their challenges, Kinsey commented.

Denison is known for its hills, and Majestic Hills Golf Course fills that bill, too. “Golfers definitely have to use some uneven stances,� Kinsey stated,

“and they face some uneven lies. Seldom do I hear a golfer say ‘I have a perfectly flat lie’.�

Another challenging hole is #2. At 370 yards, it is a long par 4. “It’s a great hole,� said Kinsey. “It features a steady climb up hill, and out of bounds is to the right and left. A good tee ball is required.�

leg to the right. “You can cut the corner to make it shorter, but it takes a good shot to do that,� Kinsey explained.

Kinsey is as familiar with the course as anyone, playing it a couple times a week.

His favorite hole? “For some reason I like #13,� he responded. “It’s a par 3. You have to hit across the creek and it has a tough angle from the tee box.�

The hole also features a two-tiered green with a good slope. Kinsey stated a green shot can roll up the green and then roll back down.

Cups at Majestic Hills Golf Course are changed three or four times a week to minimize wear on the greens and to provide variation for people who golf the course often. “We’re proud of Majestic Hills,� said Kinsey. “The greens are in excellent

condition and are fairly quick. The fairways are very lush and all stand up well. I’m very proud of our conditions and what we provide.�

On top of that, Majestic Hills features a nice golf shop and a beautiful bar and grill.

Majestic Hills also has a driving range across Donna Reed Drive. “What we feature nobody else in the area can offer,� said Kinsey.
