Coca-Cola Days keeps Atlantic refreshed MIKE BROWNLEE Staff Writer mike.brownlee@nonpareilonline.com (712) 325-5732 ATLANTIC - Every September they come from across the country. They bring figurines, toy cars, dolls, plates and glasses. And the common denominator? Coca Cola. Coca Cola Days in Atlantic is a celebration of all things related to the venerable soft drink company, in homage to a refreshment that has been bottled in the area since the late 1910s. The festival, which will be held Sept. 24 and 25 this year. “We invite Coca Cola collectors from across the country to come to Atlantic and display their memorabilia,” said Ann McCurdy, executive director of the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce. “Some of the memorabilia is for sale or for swap. Some is for display only.” McCurdy said the available merchandise ranges in price from 25-cents to $2,500. Items include vintage vending machines, Christmas ornaments, calendars, jewelry and more. The memorabilia at Coca Cola Days is an eclectic mix, said Atlantic resident
Dolly Bergmann. “From the tiniest items to really large items,” Bergmann said. Bergmann said she’s attended every Coca Cola Days since 1997, often working at them as a member of the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce. McCurdy said that last year’s festival drew about 2,000 people, with 20 different states represented. Coca Cola Days was founded in 1990 to honor the Atlantic Bottling Company. “The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce was looking for ideas,” said Bergmann, who is a former executive director of the chamber. “We thought, ‘how can we do something to get more people to come to town?’ “Coca Cola Days was thought up and it went from there.” The Atlantic Bottling Company has been operated by the Tyler family since 1915 when it was called Tyler’s Flavors. The Tylers were in the ice cream business when they added soda pop that year. They stumbled upon a franchise contract for Coca Cola in a building they’d just bought in Clarinda a few years later, and the family’s foray into the soft drink began. Today there are two plants, the Atlantic plant, along with a second oper-
ation in Waukee. “There’s a lot of history there,” Bergmann said. “It’s been a part of the community of Atlantic for so long.” Bergmann said Saturday, Sept. 25 is the key day to the festival. From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Coca Cola collectors will have their wares on display at the Herring Building at Second Street and Poplar Street in Atlantic. She said there’d be more than 100 different vendors set up with Coca Cola merchandise for sale. “If you have any interest at all, or just curiosity about Coca Cola items, that’s the day to be in Atlantic,” she said. And the collectors aren’t just retail salesman, glancing up occasionally from a paperback novel to attend to a sale. They know and revel in the Coca Cola glory before them. “The vendors are very knowledgeable. They know things about the bottles, the old trays, the signs. Anything that has Coca Cola on it, they know,” Bergmann said. “If you’ve happened to go through grandma and grandpa’s house and find an old Coca Cola tray and wonder if it’s worth anything, this is the place to bring it. There’ll be somewhere there to tell you.”

ATLANTIC - A major hospital, restaurants and stores are all available to residents of Atlantic. And so is the sense of community offered by a small community. Situated just off of Interstate 80 in northern Cass County, Atlantic is burg of 7,500 people situated in an advantageous spot for residents who want a to live in a small town but also want access to a big one.

“It’s the best of both worlds,” Ann McCurdy said. “People have access to big cities, with Omaha and Council Bluffs nearby and Des Moines only an hour and a half away. But we’re a small town.” McCurdy is the executive director of the Atlantic Chamber of Commerce, located at the refurbished Rock Island Train Depot, 102 Chestnut St. McCurdy noted that Atlantic also has plenty of the retail and service businesses - “everything you need on a day-to-day basis,” meaning a trip to Council Bluffs isn’t needed for specialty items or services. McCurdy, who has lived in Atlantic four years after growing up in Omaha and living in Des Moines, said she feels there’s a bigger sense of community in a small town. “It’s a wonderful place to raise a family. I feel connected to the city I live in. When you live in a big city it’s easy to feel isolated,” McCurdy said. “In a small town there’s a stronger connection. You have a better chance to be involved in city gov-
ernment. You feel more inclined to know members of the community.” That sense of community, and a business opportunity, brought back Jay and Jennifer Miller. The Millers moved back to Atlantic to open Brymons Home Furnishing, 700 Park Dr., in 2006 after leaving the area after graduating from Atlantic High School 22 years ago. “We like the people. We’ve gotten to know a lot of people over the last four years and made a lot of good acquaintances and friends,” Jay Miller said. “It’s just a good place to live.” The Millers also mentioned the brandnew YMCA, which already has about 5,000 members. McCurdy said the membership includes people from 30 zip codes. Atlantic has weathered the recent economic problems, McCurdy said, thanks in large part to an economy that doesn’t rely on one major employer. “Our economy is very well diversified,” she said. “We rely on a lot of businesses, many small businesses too. That’s helped
keep our economy healthy this past year.” McCurdy said that there haven’t been any major layoffs or closures in Atlantic. She said numbers from 2009 are down and projections for 2010 are also down, “but not dramatically.” “Overall the business climate is good,” McCurdy said. Jay Miller agreed. “I see general positive growth, it’ll be slow, but improved growth over the long term,” Miller said. Events on the docket in Atlantic for the summer include the Third Thursday Concert Series, which will include music in City Park on the third Thursday of the summer months. Upcoming shows include Randy Burk and Jason Reed’s “Pickin’ in the Park” acoustic jam session on June 17, the Red Oak-based Wilson Performing Arts Center performing on July 15 and a Aug. 19 performance by Night Wing, an ensemble from the Heartland of America Band based out of Offutt Air Force Base.
