By Cayde Sprecker For Woodbine/Logan Softball season has come to Woodbine once again, as the Lady Tigers take to the field to make yet another run at the conference, district and maybe even state titles. Coaches Erin Hochstein and Kristi Mentink return serious firepower to the mound, field and plate this year in the form of several returning senior leaders. Alyssa Dunlop is a commanding presence on the mound for the Lady Tigers. The All-Stater and UNO
Maverick-to-be racked up 262 strikeouts and held opponents down to only 56 hits for the season. Dunlop also has some power at the plate as she was one of only two players last season to round the bases for a home run. With sophomore Sami Jo Klaahsen and freshman Kaitlyn Pulscher playing supporting roles on the mound for the Lady Tigers, prospects look good. Nikki Melby, another senior standout, had 42 hits in only 96 at-bats last season. She also led the team in runs scored with an impressive total of 33 and put out 298 runners. Melby’s batting average was also

a standout stat at .438. Kimberly Hardy was error free at her position last year and had one of the highest on-base percentages on the team. Kara Kuhlman is an excellent all-around player who has put up great number in both hitting and fielding. With an eye to improve on last season’s 20-4 record, the Lady Tigers should prove to be very competitive moving forward. “We have a few things to clean up, but we are very pleased with what we have this season,” Coach Hochstein commented about her team.

more Davis Hackman shared the spotlight in that category for the Tigers last year and that can hardly be expected to change, as Hupp is still calling the shots. Wagner, Ball and Hackman split the innings last season down into thirds, and, with that kind of relief, Wagner was able to slide 65 strike outs past opponents last season. It wouldn’t hurt the team to drop their ERA, however, as 3.65 as a team leaves room for improvement. Senior Nicholas Powers must have some kind of technique for hitting
long line drives at odd angles or making opponents drop pop-flies. Powers managed to get four stand-up triples last season; that’s four times as many of any of his teammates. He also racked up a solid RBI total at 22. The team is certain to have worked and improved in the offseason; whether they have worked hard enough to stick with the power in the conference this season is the question. It will soon be clear whether or not the Tigers are a power in the conference this summer.
The Tigers are ready to take the field this season. With plenty of room to improve from last season’s record, (9-13) they are getting ready to begin the season with a bang. Newly-promoted head coach John Hupp (assistant coach last season) and the trio of senior leadership he has in Derek Wagner, Austin Hedstrom and Nicholas Powers, have a lot of work to do against the best in the conference. The seniors won’t need to get too worked up if they continue to produce numbers like they have in the past. Panthers have good foundation to build winning season The Logan-Magnolia Panther baseball team is looking forward to a successful season this summer. Even though the team lost three seniors they are looking at a good foundation to start building a winning season. Coming off a 18-10 record last year, Head Coach Will Azinger hopes to contend for the Western Valley Conference Title and make the confer-
ence championship series. Helping in this quest will be nine returning letter winners to the line-up which include Bryce Azinger, Levi Ettleman, Evan Mikels, Alex Skeen, Jacob Winther, Quin Mann, Grant Whisney, Zack Powley and Nate Fender. Support from the mound this year will come from Ettleman, Mikels, Mann and
Fender. “We should have some nice pitching depth this season,” Azinger said. Helping on the defensive end will be what Azinger says is above average team speed in most spots. Also helping the Panthers this year will be Nolan Oviatt, Dane Charbonneau, Grant Whisney, Brennan Azinger, Nick Knudsen, Paul Hutson, Logan Melby, Brett Greenwood, Dillon Wills, Nick Edney, Jacob Kirk and Brandon Buffum. Azinger has been coaching baseball since 1991 and helping him with coaching duties this year will be Kurtis Hinkel and Jacob Hedger. Teams expected to have good seasons in the Western Valley Conference South Division this year are IKM-Manning, West Harrison and Woodbine.

Trent Kuhl to lead Lady Panthers in 2010 Brittany Greenwood For Woodbine/Logan The 2010 Logan-Magnolia softball squad is coached by head coach Trent Kuhl in his first season. The team returns seven letter winners from last years’ season. The Panthers have 20 girls on the roster; Chelsea Lautrup, Kaitlyn Swanger and Megan Troxel are the eighth graders, the freshmen include 11 girls Elicia Downey, Emily Clark, Sammi Kersten, Stephanie Drozco, Courtney Oviatt, Kendra Holcomb, Ashley Bradshaw, Kelsey Sojka, Kacie Hartwig, Autumn Meeker and Haleigh Rife. Jocelyn Camenzind is the only sophomore. The juniors are Abby Foutch, Kelsey Frisk, Audrina Dickman and Jessica Reynek and the lone senior is Skyler Bertelson. The Panthers look to improve their record from last year when they finished 17-19. They lost four girls from last season team due to graduation, but look to have a successful year this year. The team is fairly young, but with experienced girls with high goals and expectations. They will rely on speed and quickness to move runners around the bases and have solid defense. Kelsey Frisk will be on the mound as well as Audrina Dickman. The pitchers will work to move the ball around the strike zone, mixing their pitches up and the defese will be there for back up. The team is prepared and ready to get the season rolling.

PATRICK DONOHUE World-Herald News Service Missouri Valley softball coach Rick McHugh has a good reason to be optimistic this summer. One glance at the Big Reds’ roster reveals plenty of varsity experience on the field in 2010. Every major offensive contributor is back, along with a talented pitching staff that features two gifted starters. “We lost no offense from last year’s team,” McHugh said. “What we lost last year was leadership. Our offense is probably going to be stronger than it’s been in the last two or three years. I think this is probably going to be one of our stronger years hitting.” Mallory Cunard’s graduation presents a large leadership void. She was a serviceable hitter, but McHugh said her voice in the huddle served a bigger benefit to the team. With Cunard gone, McHugh is looking to seniors Nekell Stueve and Whitney Dooley to take

her place. Each provided good offense for a Big Reds team that finished 15-17 in 2009, and each led offseason conditioning and practices with the rest of the squad. “Whitney is more of a lead-by-example-type player,” McHugh said. “She plays hard and lets you see that she’s there for you. “Then, you have Nekell, who’s a little more vocal. They’ve started out on the right foot. They’re the ones who hold the open gyms and practice hitting. They’re picking up where they left off last year.” McHugh’s top returner is junior Tiffani Housh. She not only lead the Big Reds in batting average (.361), hits (35), RBIs (17) and extrabase hits (14), but also threw 115 innings in the circle, yielding just a 2.19 ERA with 109 strikeouts. Joining Housh at pitcher will be sophomore Maggie Hawley. She was just as impressive as Housh, throwing 90 innings with a 2.41 ERA. “I’ve got confidence with whomever I put out there,” said McHugh of Housh and Hawley. “As the year goes on, I might start playing the mind games if we’re going to see an (opponent) again. I don’t really have a big worry. I can call on either one of them, and I may even use them both in the same game. They have such different styles of pitching that we could mess up some teams.” With a Western Iowa Conference title among his top team goals, McHugh knows much work remains. And competing with league foes like Treynor and Audubon will only propel his team’s confidence as it prepares for postseason play. “I want to see us mature a little more,” McHugh said. “I think with these girls, as long as their confidence is going in the right direction, we’re going to do OK. The key is just staying positive.”

led last year’s team in average (.481) and hits (37). Cunard was tops in RBIs (24), doubles and was tied for the lead in home runs. York’s .293 average was third-best on the team, and he totaled 24 RBIs “My seniors have shown great leadership and a lot of hard work from the offseason,” Unger said. “With that catalyst in there, along with junior Jole Miller, we’re expecting a lot of leadership. Our two top hitters are back, and they were both all-conference and first team all-district players. I’m expecting a lot from those two.” Miller’s contributions will come on the mound. Last season as a sophomore, he finished with a 2.89 ERA in 11 appearances while striking out 32 in just over 53 innings of work. “He’ll be our leader,” Unger said. “He’s bigger and stronger, and he’s gonna be real good.” Unger also said York and Cunard will see action on the mound this summer.
Competition won’t be lacking in Western Iowa Conference play. With a goal set on hosting games for the conference tournament later this summer, Unger knows focus will be a key ingredient to success this season. “By midseason, we want to be one of the top four teams in (conference) so we can get a home game in the conference tournament,” Unger said. “Then, hopefully, we’ll make a run. Our conference is usually pretty tough. It’ll be competitive. Everybody has a few good athletes, and, hopefully, that’ll set us up for districts.” With a blend of depth and experience, that conference competition should prepare the Big Reds for a nice postseason run. “This group of kids has really worked hard, so I’m expecting some great things,” Unger said. “I think we’ll surprise a lot of people because the last couple years we just didn’t have the depth and pitching we do now. We’re trying to get that winning tradition back.”

With a roster stacked with seniors and the confidence that goes with experience, the Missouri Valley baseball team is expecting some positive strides in the 2010 baseball season. Seniors Nick Monzu, Cory Cunard and Josh York were pivotal parts of a Big Reds team that finished 8-16 overall last summer; however, seven of those losses were by three runs or fewer. With a dedication to offseason work, Mo. Valley is set to turn things around in 2010. “We’re pretty senior-oriented,” Missouri Valley coach Rod Unger said. “I’ve got five starters back, and four of them are seniors. I have eight total seniors, and they’ve really come a long way. I expect us to be a lot better this year than we were last year.” For that to happen, Monzu, Cunard and York will again have to lead the way. Monzu

PATRICK DONOHUE World-Herald News Service Too often last season, the West Harrison baseball team came up just short. A closer looks at the Hawkeyes’ 11-14 record from last summer reveals plenty of oh-so-close moments. “Last year, we lost 10 games by four runs or less, and six of those were by two runs or less,” West Harrison coach Tony Nunez said. “We were just on the verge of having a great year. It was our youth that did us in there. We’ve already won a few games this year that we probably would have lost last year without that experience.” Ample talent is back this summer. Nunez lost only two seniors from last year’s roster, and essentially all of his core offensive and pitching talent returns. Sophomore Chase Bertelsen, juniors Ethan Earlywine and Lucas Christensen and senior Pete Davis each hit .300 or better last season. Pete Davis led the Hawkeyes with a .392 average. Much will be expected from the four this summer. In addition to that quartet, however, more production will be needed, and so far, Nunez has been pleased with what he’s seen. “The biggest improvement we needed

this season was our hitting, and that’s what has carried us thus far,” Nunez said. “We haven’t struck out much, and that’s really helped us. We’ve been putting the ball in play, and that’ll help your run production.” The pitching staff is the primary area that will benefit from another year of maturity. Not one person was lost, and Nunez has a handful of talented arms among his choices. Senior Pete Davis finished 2009 with a

2.42 ERA in 63 innings of work, but Davis’ most impressive asset is his control. He struck out 68 batters and walked only five last summer. “Pete is our No. 1 control guy,” Nunez said. “Just having someone come in there and throw strikes has been a great thing to have.” With strong core talent back in 2010, expectations are high in Mondamin. But
with a tough conference schedule ahead and a district featuring such teams as St. Albert, Treynor and A-H-S-T, the road to the state tournament will be no easy task. “We’re looking to win conference and see what we can do in the postseason,” Nunez said. “We’re always looking to improve every game until we get to the postseason. Our districts are out and we have a tough setup, but we’ll deal with that when we get there.”

Harrison County Summer Sports West Harrison softball takes unpredictable turn
Page 10
PATRICK DONOHUE World-Herald News Service Most prep softball teams concentrate on consistency and maturity entering a new season, but West Harrison’s needs are far more basic. Only three games into the season, West Harrison athletic director Lori Clark had to take over as head coach of the softball team. Jackie Nixon initially had those duties, but due to unforeseen circumstances, Clark assumed the role just days after the 2010 season was underway. Clark didn’t want to disclose the reasons for the move; instead, she wanted to focus on ways to improve on the Hawkeyes’ 8-16 season last summer. Much work remains for that to happen. West Harrison lost just two key players from its 2009 team – Kirsten Nelson and Jaclyn Neill – but each was a strong offensive force, hitting .330 or better. With those two gone, Clark will have to mesh what little experience the Hawkeyes have with their underclassmen. Two senior starters return in shortstop Carmen Rife and Kayla

Birdsall, who is returning from a knee injury suffered last season. Clark also returns juniors Alivia Nunez and Janessa Wohlers. Nunez will be a mainstay in the outfield while Wohlers will be the Hawkeyes’ ace in the pitching circle. She threw 170 innings for a 3.49 ERA last season. Beyond that, the rest of the West Harrison roster is primarily underclassmen, meaning Clark’s goals for the summer are fairly basic. “Right now, we want to regroup with the situation we’ve been handed,” Clark said. “The girls have been very positive about the change. They’ve accepted it and moved on, and we’re looking for a lot of improvement and a lot of changes. Every year, any team I deal with, it’s always a goal to do better than the previous season. We want to see the development and improvement of the kids.” Although Clark finds herself with a new responsibility, this won’t be her first time coaching softball. She was an assistant coach for the Hawkeyes a few years back, and she was the head coach at Sidney 25 years ago. With three losses to start the season before Clark took over last week, much improvement remains for the Hawkeyes. But before she starts worrying about wins

now, some of them are in the mindset that they love the sport and they want to play, but I want to develop their confidence so that they believe they can win. The attitude right now has to be changed to improve their winning.”
Harrison County Summer Sports Lady Bulldogs focus on Western Valley Conference
June 9, 2010
PATRICK DONOHUE World-Herald News Service In his third season as Boyer Valley head softball coach, Dave Adams hopes to make big strides within the Western Valley Conference.
Page 11
A 12-17 finish to the 2009 season reminded Adams he had a talented team, but there was still a lot of growing up to do. “Last summer, we were still in that learning process,” he said. “It was my second year and we were still learning a lot of things.
“This year, we need to gel so we can do what we need to do. We need to gel as a team and we’ll be alright once that happens.” All but two members of the Bulldogs’ roster return this summer, and that familiarity will help the team mesh. The Bulldogs have won three of their first six games, but many of those contests were played with a short-handed roster. “So far, we’ve had girls real busy with track and other sports,” Adams said. “They’re just getting started. We need to get some games played and some repetitions in, and then we’ll be alright.” Juniors Taylor Nelson and Mallory Mitchell, along with senior Ashli Dunham will provide a strong offensive presence atop the Bulldogs’ lineup. Each hit better than .300 last season. Mitchell and Dunham will assume the pitching duties as well. Mitchell threw just over 127 innings last season with a 2.69 ERA while Dunham earned a 3.40 ERA in 57 innings. Despite the solid marks, Adams said he’d
like to see more steadiness from the two this summer. “We’re looking for a little more consistency there,” Adams said. “We were inconsistent pitching last year, and I think we have some experience there to build on. “Mallory will get 65 percent of the workload, and Ashli will get the rest.” In a talented Western Valley Conference, the Bulldogs should learn plenty about themselves in 2010. And with a year of maturity to build on, improvements surely are within reach. “Realistically, I’d like to be somewhere in that 18-20 win mark,” Adams said. “I want to push the top teams like Woodbine and Charter Oak. “We’re thinking of a better overall record, trying to improve on that 12-17 mark. We’re hoping to do some damage. Last year, we played some teams tough, and we just came up a little short. We’re hoping to win a game or two from those top teams this year.” Boyer Valley softball team members include, front row, left to right, Stef Brink, Makayla Carter, Mallory Mitchell, Megan Mitchell and Shelby Houston. PATRICK DONOHUE World-Herald News Service A new summer yields a new set of expectations for Boyer Valley baseball. For the consecutive straight year, the Bulldogs will have a new coach at the helm and, again, it’ll be a BV alum. Dan Steele, 22, takes over the baseball program this summer. A 2006 graduate of the school, Steele said he’d like to preach some new coaching philosophies to his players. “Last year, they kind of had a down year and things weren’t going right,” Steele said. “When I came in, I was trying to be a breath of fresh air and keep everyone up and positive. “Of course, I always stress defense, too. If nobody scores, all we need is a couple runs to win. That’s real big in my book.”
Although he’s young, Steele is quite experienced with coaching baseball. After playing a season for Iowa Western Community College, he took over as the junior varsity coach at Charter Oak-Ute for a season before being promoted to varsity coach last season. Now, he inherits a Bulldog team that finished 8-17 in 2009, but brings back some key talent. Junior Craig Warnock and senior Aaron Johnson represent Boyer Valley’s top returning offensive weapons. Each put up respectable averages, but, as Steele pointed out, it won’t be up to one individual player to make a difference at the plate. Bunts and timely hitting will be the Bulldogs’ most effective offensive game plan. “We used small ball real effectively,” Steele said. “You need those singles every once in a while, just to drive some guys in when they’re
in scoring position. You’re going to have those days when you just can’t hit the ball.” On the mound, junior Adam Hadden and senior Pat McGinn should be at the front end of the rotation, along with the coach’s brother, sophomore Brian Steele. While Dan Steele admits there’s much work to do this summer, he’s optimistic about the season. He’s not expecting a state-tournament berth to occur in one summer, but he’s set some modest goals for his team, specifically, a top-four finish in Western Valley Conference play. That would earn BV a berth in the conference tournament and some much-needed confidence for his squad. “We’ve got a lot of work left to do,” Steele said. “If our pitchers are consistent and our defense is there, hopefully, we can get the bats going. We’ll just have to see what happens.” Bulldog 2010 baseball players include, front row, left to right, Jacen Cable, Jake Weber, Michael Hanigan and Tyler Hoffmann. Second row, Craig Warnock, Adam Hadden, Colton Baker and Aaron Johnson. Back row, Coach Danny Steele, Cole McAllister, Patrick McGinn, Matt Nemitz, Nick Miller and Brian Steele.
