About Our 2011 Cover council bluffs, iowa pottawattamie county
The renovated Bayliss Park was reopened to the public in April of 2007 after months of fundraising and construction. The rededication of Bayliss Park highlighted its new fountain titled “Wellspring” by internationally recognized artist Brower Hatcher, and its companion performance pavilion, called “Oculus”. This 2.5 acre park preserves the city’s tradition since the 19th century of having a downtown public square with a centerpiece fountain. This latest phase in the evolution of this historic green space is a symbol of how this community rallied to preserve this park for use by all our citizens and visitors. 2011 visitors guide

Our History
Historic Sites
Imagine the wonder and excitement of the first French and Spanish explorers. Lewis and Clark, and the Missouria and Otoe Indian Tribes met in this historic area once known as “councile bluff”. Nestled against the Loess Hills, we were a resting spot for the early visitors while they made final preparations for the long, difficult journey westward. In the mid 1800’s, many pioneers migrated through here on the Oregon, Lewis and Clark, California and Mormon Pioneer trails. We invite you to visit the Western Historic Trails Center and Kanesville Tabernacle to learn more.

Eagles of Honor are being sculpted by Neola artist Russell Christensen. Christensen and many towns across Pottawattamie County have a vision of showing thankfulness and pride by creating a Veteran’s Monument in every community. In stunning bronze, each eagle is unique. Each monument is a testament that our county is strong, united, filled with hard working people who appreciate freedom and want to honor those who preserve freedom for America. For more information, log onto http://www.eaglesofhonorproject.com/homepage. html.
