Lo-Ma returns 17 letter winners The Logan-Magnolia wrestling team has a group of 17 letter winners returning for the 2010-11 season. Head coach Kent Kersten said the team has experience on its side along with several multi-year letter winners and Nolan Oviatt, who earned sixth at 119 lbs., and third at 130 lbs., in State wrestling meets. “The team has won the Class I-A sectional, regional and district tournaments the past nine years,” Kersten said. “LoganMagnolia owns the longest state dual qualifying streak at nine consecutive years. We are shooting for 10 in a row.” Other teams may have had more appearances, but not consecutively, he said. Seniors on the team this season include: Dane Charbonneau, Jacob Decker, Zach Hatcher (District qualifier/captain), Curtis Hazen, Travis Jones (District qualifier), Marrick Loftus (State qualifier/captain), Dillon Lorentzen (two-time State qualifier/captain), Evan Mikels (State qualifier/captain), Dillon Miller (District
qualifier), Nolan Oviatt (three time State qualifier and sixth and third places at state/captain) and Troy Sodders (District qualifier). Juniors on the team include Chris Bridgeford, Eric Brosnahan, Quinton Doiel (state qualifier), Quin Mann, Jordan Muxfeldt, Ethan Reynek, Grant Whisney, Brian Zephier. Sophomores, Logan Melby and Brock Meyers. Freshmen, Brandon Buffum, Jacob Derengowski, Joe Graf, Brett Greenwood, Ridge Meeker, Jake Reisland, Justin Vaughn and Tanner Winther. The career wins among the captains of the team include: Hatcher, 78; Loftus, 74; Lorentzen, 88; Mikels, 73; and Oviatt, 141. “We would like to be in a position where the team could compete for a spot in the state duals again this year,” Kersten said. “It is a very long season with several tough tournaments and dual meets ahead of us. If everyone can stay healthy and injury free we should have a solid team this year.” Lo-Ma seniors on the wrestling team include, front row, left to right, Zach Hatcher, Evan Mikels, Nolan Oviatt, Dillon Lorentzen, Marrick Loftus and Dillon Miller. In his 16th year coaching wrestling at Woodbine Community School, Matthew Mentink is seeing some big changes this year. He’s been working on it for about five years. But this year, it finally happened. Boyer Valley, who has not had a wrestling team in about 30 years, is cooping with the Woodbine Tigers to create a joint team. The end result allows Bull Dog grapplers the opportunity to competitively hit the mat for the Tiger team, and increases the numbers, and therefore the competitiveness, of the Tiger team. To date, five Bulldogs are being bussed to Woodbine daily for practices. “We’ve always known they have kids with the right build to wrestle,” Mentink said. “With them not having wrestling, they had tons of kids out for basketball that wanted to be out for something, but weren’t really ball players. So we kept talking about it. There’s a tradition of it, with the Blum boys and Levi Malone coming here to wrestle. Finally, this year, everything came together.” Four of the five Boyer Valley wrestlers are freshman, and one, a sophomore. That seems to be a trend on the team as a total. The wrestlers are young, but high in numbers. Dalton Peterson, a 189 senior, will be leading the team as captain. Peterson is the only returning grappler with State experience. Mentink believes that experience, as well as his personality, will make a great leader for the young team. “Dalton knows what it’s going to take to make it to State again. He only had four losses last year, three of those at State,” Mentink said. “We have a great leader in Dalton. He’s very verbal as well as physical. I’ve been fortunate to have good, senior leaders and he’ll be exceptional.”
Good luck, winter sports teams! THE LOGAN
Herald-Observer
Although Mentink is relying on Peterson to serve as a role model and leader, he will also be depending on volunteer assistants Jim Mullinex and Adam Cox to help mold the team of 27. “This is going to be my biggest squad in 13 years. It might be the first time we can fill all the weight classes,” Mentink said. “In 2003 we were close, but still open in one or two. It may have been back in 1997 when we were dual team runners up we had all weight classes filled.” Eight of those wrestlers are returning as last season’s letter winners, including: Peterson; Gavvon Shafer, 152, junior; Cory Caddell, 215, junior; Alton Dickinson, 171, junior; Mason Mentink, 140, sophomore; Josh Matusik, 160, sophomore; Matthew Monahan, 145, sophomore; and Darin Peterson, 171, sophomore. Shafer, Darin Peterson and Matusik are returning from a season of more than 20 wins. Matusik returns as a district qualifier. And Mentink, with his strong return grapplers and new, young talent, have set their goals high for the season. After last year’s 10-10 season, the team is aiming for 20 dual wins out of 24 possible. The team hopes to be a regional dual qualifier. And Mentink has his eye on four to six wrestlers he hopes to see make it to State. But he knows what’s out there. “We’re always going to run into LoganMagnolia,” he said. “But we have to find a way to basically decrease 20 of their points they earn and earn it ourselves. In the sectional we’re in, that’s our goal.” Aside from returning letter winners, other team members include: Alex Whiteing, Boyer Valley, 103, freshman; Lucas Hedstrom, Woodbine, 112, freshman, Tanner Hedstrom, Woodbine, 119, freshman; Malachi Mentink, Woodbine, 125, freshman; Austin Quick, Woodbine, 130, senior; Nate Thompson, Woodbine, 135, freshman; Nate Rudd, Boyer Valley, 145, freshman; Kyle Kuhlman, Woodbine, 215, sophomore; Spencer Ball, Woodbine, 285, senior; Joe Grady, Boyer Valley, 125, freshman; Nick Klein, Boyer Valley, 130, freshman; Fynn Lindner, Woodbine, 135, senior; Gage Lutz, Woodbine, 145, freshman; Montana Winther, Woodbine, 145, freshman; Jacen Cable, Boyer Valley, 152, sophomore; Dalton Grossman, Woodbine, 160, freshman; Rodney Weatherwax, Woodbine, 189, sophomore; Craig Royer, Woodbine, 152, freshman; and Colten Watkins, Woodbine, 135, junior.

Big Reds and Hawkeyes join forces for 2010-11 MATT GUBBELS For Woodbine and Logan There is a new era beginning with the Missouri Valley wrestling program in 2010 as the Big Red will combine its program with West Harrison to help the chances of both programs to succeed. West Harrison, which competes in the Western Valley Conference, had a smaller number of wrestlers this season and that was one of the causes of the arrangement, according to Big Red coach Keefer Jensen. The program consolidation will add some extra wrestlers and depth to a team that finished 2009 with a 9-17 record and is looking to improve that mark this season. The Big Red returns state place winners in 112-pound sophomore Brett Marcum, who finished eighth in Class 1-A last season with a 40-19 record, and 119-pound junior Walker Marshall, who finished fifth with a 44-8 record. Missouri Valley also has seven other returning starters from its own roster in 2009, and also has two wrestlers that logged significant time on the mats for West Harrison last season. Those athletes, along with their possible weight classes for this season, are: senior Colton Neil (125), junior Ty Dugdale (130), senior Brian Dougherty (145), junior Dan Waterhouse (152), senior Gareb Gatroft (171), junior John Wohlers (215)
and senior Zach Wheeler (heavyweight). Neil and Dugdale are two of the wrestlers that came from the West Harrison program. He also sees senior heavyweight Jake Howell battling for a spot in the starting lineup early on in the season. There will also be some freshmen filling in because of needs at some of the other open weight classes, where there are not returning wrestlers. Jensen also said the conference race will be much more wide open this year with Tri-Center and Underwood leading the field with Audubon figuring into the equation as well. “We have a lot of competition in the room with bigger numbers,” Keefer Jensen said. “We have a lot of motivated kids that want to get better.” Jensen mentioned that some of the big keys to the season will be keeping kids in the program and making them as tough as they can. “Having a leader like Walker Marshall really helps in that aspect,” Jensen said. Jensen also said the dedication of the inexperienced young wrestlers that will have to start will also be very important. “We want to get kids to wrestle their best and continue to improve,” Jensen said. “I just want a group that fights day in and day out and would look like to pick up a few more dual wins and get a couple more kids to state.”

Woodbine senior Ethan Lenz, a forward during his high school basketball career, is alone in returning for his fourth season of ball. However, he will be joined by returning letter winners junior guard Davis Hackman and senior guard Alex Klein. “I feel this team is going to be lacking in post play, but think that our guard core will be able to make up what we are missing there,” Stille said. “We have three seniors who are on the team and they will provide some

quality leadership for us this season.” Joining Lenz and Klein as a senior on the team this year is Jacolby Ehlert. New to the team, Ehlert has been sited by Stille as a newcomer to watch on the court. Aside from Ehlert, Stille is expecting newcomers Sam Powers (junior), Jameson Delany, Jay Radloff to lend a helping hand under the leadership of team the captains, Lenz, Ehlert and Hackman. Together, the Woodbine Tiger team hopes to best their 20092010 varsity of 9-12. Second year coach Stille and assistant coach Megan Parker, believe it’s possible. “I think that this year’s team is going to use our speed to our advantage,” Stille said. “We are going to need to work together as a team on the defensive end of the floor. I think that this team is going to be very fun to watch and will continue to grow as a team throughout much of the season.” The team is hoping to pull in a .500 or above record and finish in the top half of their conference. “We’d like to win at least our first tournament game,” Stille added. And while the competition might be tough, Stille believes his team can handle the pressure. “I see us being able to compete in most of the games we play this year. I think that this group of guys can really go out and play with anyone if they put their minds to it,” Stille said. Team members include: seniors Lenz, Klein and Ehlert; juniors Hackman, Jay Radloff and Levi Brown; sophomores Patrick Glackin, Trevor Barnum, Jameson Delaney and Sam Powers; and freshmen Drew Radloff, Seth Willis, Mark Tremmel and Adolfo Fernandez.

Not pictured: Melissa Sherer. Photo: Chelle’s Creative Photography Megan Parker is determined to lead the Woodbine Lady Tigers basketball team to a better season over their 3-17 from the 2009-2010 school year. The team is young, but returning starters juniors Shelby Hall and Justina Royer are being looked up to by a young, Tiger team. Hall, Royer, sophomore Alyssa Blum, senior Bekka Boer, sophomore Kaitlyn Pulscher and junior Shelby Vandemark are returning as last season’s letter winners to lead the team, managed by Courtney Jensen and Carey Thornburg. “I’m very excited to start this season. We have a very young team, but we will have good leadership from the few returning players that we have,” Parker said. “So far it has been a great start to the season. The girls have been full of energy and have had a great willingness to learn. I’m looking forward to seeing the growth we make as the season progresses.” The team’s goals in the 2010-2011 season are simple. “We’d like to win five or more games, finish in the top half of the Western Valley Conference and win our first round of
regionals,” Parker said. What’s holding them back? Height and lack of varsity experience, according to Parker, who sited only having five returning letter winners. But Parker doesn’t want that to hold her team back and sees them being competitive with other area schools. “I think we’ll be able to compete with pretty much every team we face,” she said. “But I believe that some of our most competitive games will be against Boyer Valley and West Harrison.” Team members this season will include: freshman Paige Hackman (forward), Melissa Sherer (point guard), Lydia Payne (guard), Allison Lee (guard); sophomores Kaitlyn Pulscher (guard), Alyssa Blum (guard); juniors Justina Royer (forward), Shelby Vandemark (guard), Shelby Hall (point guard); and senior Bekka Boer (center). TRENT BUCKNER For The Logan Herald-Observer Head coach Steve Nixon welcomes back a good mix of players as he and new assistant coaches Kevin Osborn and Trent Lally look to prepare the 2010-2011 version of the Logan-Magnolia Panther basketball team for the upcoming season. Back from last year’s 12-11 team are senior Levi Ettleman and junior Nate Fender who both earned all conference honors for Lo-Ma last season. Ettleman returns after averaging 21 points and 11 rebounds per game, while Fender added 11 points and three assists per contest. Sophomore Paul Hutson and junior Zach Powley also return for the Panthers after earning a varsity letter for their contributions to the team. Other team members that will be called upon for playing time are Brennan Azinger, Cole Davis, Gannon Cunard, Caden
McDonald, Alex Cohrs and Nate Morton. “We return two all-conference performers, four letter winners and eight guys that have played in a varsity game,” said Nixon. “We are hoping that this kind of experience will pay off for us this season.” Depth will be a concern of the coaches at the start of the season as the Panthers lost one key returnee before the season began. “Dominic Snyder was lost for the season as he suffered a knee injury during the football season,” Nixon said. “We will have to see how this effects our rotation.” Looking at the other teams in the Western Valley South Conference, Nixon sees Boyer Valley and IKM-Manning as the strongest team entering the season. These conference games along with non-conference clashes with teams such as Tri-Center, Underwood, Maple Valley, Missouri Valley and Westwood should provide an entertaining schedule for fans as they follow the Panthers this season.

On Jan. 29 the Lady Panthers were playing the Ar-We-Va Rockets. With 1.7 seconds left on the clock before half-time, Alex Gochenour was standing under the basket at the far end of the court and threw the ball inbounds to Karen Hutson at the half court line. Hutson took two dribbles and produced one of the most amazing shots ever seen on the Panthers’home court. Her half court shot hit the bucket for three points and the Panthers went on to win the game. The 2009-10 season was an exciting season, and the 2010-11 season has the making to be much more exciting. Logan-Magnolia girls head basketball coach Kevin Patterson will lead a Panther’s team that enters the pre-season poll ranked fifth in Iowa class 2A – a ranking that still comes even though Lo-Ma loss the double threat talent of Megan Hutson to graduation last year. Coming off a sensational 21-3 season in 2009-10, the Panthers return a very talented core group of seniors. Leading the way for the Lady Panthers will be Senior’s Hutson, Gochenour, Macy Cohrs, Abby Foutch and Kylee Loftus. Karen Hutson is coming off a phenomenal Junior year as the top scorer in class 2A averaging 24.8 points per game, honored as the Southwest Iowa Player of the year, Western Valley Conference first team honor and named to the 2010 INA All-State Girls Basketball Team. Other returning Western Valley Conference honor players are Gochenour (second team), Loftus (Honorable Mention), and Cohrs (Honorable Mention). Rounding out the call to help Lo-Ma will be sophomores Courtney Oviatt, Ashley Bradshaw, Carrie Charbonneau, Kia Fender, Cheyenne Jensen and Emily Dickinson. The Western Valley Conference will be tough this year as not only the Panthers come in ranked, but so does OA-BCIG (ranked 1 in class
2A) and IKM-Manning (ranked 10 in class 2A) – whom the Lady’s will battle on Jan. 14, 2011. Coach Patterson feels very confident the Lady Panthers can compete with any team on the court. “I see us fitting in somewhere near the top (in Conference play). We will have to play well to contend with the top teams, but with our senior leadership, we are capable of contending.” Key to Lo-Ma’s success this year is to maintain focus on both ends of the court. The Panther’s strength is experience and speed. Last year there were few teams that could match the Panther’s speed. When asked about initial practices this season, “Our effort (in practice) has been good so far

and the girls have really committed to getting better. Having five seniors really helps from a leadership standpoint,” Patterson said. Two specific items Patterson has his team working on is taking care of the basketball and rebounding, and he feels that if the Lady Panthers can stay focused there isn’t a team on the court that Lo-Ma can’t match. Over the past several years the LoganMagnolia Lady Panthers have had one of the most successful and consistent basketball programs in Western Iowa. Assisting Coach Patterson this year will be Trent Buckner. The Lady’s start their season at Missouri Valley on Nov. 23, then play host to Tri-Center on Nov. 30.

Big Reds forced to replace four starters MATT GUBBELS For Woodbine and Logan Papers Coach Travis Maassen has a tough task as coach of the Missouri Valley boys basketball program this year, having to replace four starters as well multiple bench players. He does return 6’2” senior point guard Jole Miller, however, who led the team in nearly every statistical category. That senior class accounted for 60 percent of the 52 points per game that Missouri Valley scored a year ago. The Big Red finished last season with a 7-12 record and placed sixth in the Western Iowa Conference. Miller averaged 16 points and nine rebounds a year ago and will need players like 6’0” senior forward Corey Chapin and 5’10” senior guard Alex Amato to step up and replace the production that Missouri Valley lost from last year around him. Maassen also expects 5’10” senior guard Dillon Stueve as well as three sophomores, 5’9” guard Sam Schmitz, 6’0” forward Ryan Goechenour and 5’10” forward Michael West, to figure into his rotation at this point but there are other newcomers that may play as well. “We lack a little size and strength; our biggest player will be our point guard,” Maassen said. “We do have some quickness and a cou-
ple of kids that shoot the ball pretty well.” With a lack of size, the Big Red will have to rely on a perimeter game that will be missing what could have been its second option for the majority of the regular season if not the whole season. Maassen thought he would have John Paul Petersen, a 5’11” guard, back as well but he sustained an ACL injury and will not be back until at least districts. “We just have to stay positive as some of these kids just went through a frustrating football season,” Maassen said. “We need a good start to get some confidence early.” With losing the majority of its squad from its last season, Missouri Valley not only has players that do not have much varsity experience but it also has several players that have not spent much time on the floor together in that setting. “We definitely have to get used to being together and develop some team chemistry early on,” Maassen said. As far as the Western Iowa Conference in 2010, Maassen said he thinks Treynor has all the pieces to be very good this year, and on paper, Tri-Center and Underwood should be teams that are very capable of giving the Cardinals a tough battle as well. “We are going to have to take baby steps to get better,” Maassen said.

Reds return three starters from that team and would like to be in contention for the conference title in 2010. Those three returning starters are: 5’8” junior guard Courtney Cunard, 6’1” junior center Carlee McKee and 5’5” sophomore Hailey Hellstrom. Cassie Reisz also started as a junior last season but is not out for basketball this season. The other starter that Missouri Valley lost from its 2009 team was its leading scorer, Kelsey Miller, who averaged over 12 points per game. Cunard is the leading returning scorer at just over 10 points a game while leading the team in assists and steals as well. McKee was the leading rebounder at nearly six caroms per game and also scored seven points per game and Hellstrom scored five points per game as well. Peterson said the improvement of his team across the board will be very important right away. “We were a young team last year,” coach Dan Peterson said. “We are looking for some early offensive consistency and our defensive play and intensity should help that because a good start is key to suc-
cess later on in the year.” The returning starters join four returning players that came off the bench last season in 5’5” senior forward Tiffani Housh, 5’7” junior guard Ashley Nelson, 5’7” junior forward Janelle Smithson, 5’9” senior center Kelly Murray and 5’11” sophomore center Taylor Gardner. Peterson also felt his team needs to come together and develop solid chemistry. “We are still a fairly young team,” Peterson said. “We are still looking for some new players to bring some leadership and intangibles to the team.” Peterson expects Tri-Center and Treynor to be at or near the top of the Western Iowa Conference this season. He also thinks his team can also be in contention with the Trojans and the Cardinals for the conference title, though, if it is able to get out of the gate fast. The most important part to Peterson, however, is that his team is peaking around tournament time. “We want to play our best basketball late and could make a run at the top of the league if we play well,” Peterson said. “Early success builds confidence so that will be very important.”

Armstead’s third season at the helm during the 2009-2010 season as he returns for his fourth. The Bulldogs will have to deal with the loss of five seniors, including starters Colton Behrendt and Nick Putnam. Both are big losses, as Colton led the team in assists and was a 2-year starter at point, and Nick was the second leading scorer (11ppg), third leading rebounder (4.7 rpg) and led the team in steals (2.8 spg). Senior guard Mark Hanigan and junior guard Brain Steele will look to fill some of the void, while Colton Thoreson and Cole McAllister will add additional size to the line-up. This season’s version of the Bulldogs may have trouble filling leadership of the point guard position. Newcomers will have to step-up quick to help fill this void. The team returns five letter-winners and should be one of the most
experienced teams in the conference. The Bulldogs will be bigger and faster this goaround, which should help shore up the rebounding deficits of the previous season. Boyer Valley will return the most tournament experienced team in the area as they have played in the conference consolation game the past two years and made runs to the Sub-state Final (2010) and the District Finals (2009). In the Western Valley Conference South Division should be strong at the top. Among the pack leaders should be Logan-Magnolia, Ar-We-Va, IKM-Manning and Boyer Valley. This season, Boyer Valley will make a push at the South Division title and look to make a run at the Tournament Championship as well. Motivation to make a run to the State Tournament is abundant. The players have turned their sites to this goal and look to produce for the first time in school history.

Back row, Katie Cogdill, Sara Hansen, Emmie Wood, Rebecca Melby, Emily Anderson, Megan Behrendt and Holly Brock. Photo: Todd Danner SPENCER FRITSCH For The Woodbine and Logan Newspapers Larry Neilsen returns for his ninth season as the head coach of Boyer Valley and is looking to kick it up a notch this year. They finished 14-7 last season and finished fourth in the south division of the Western Valley Conference. Bulldogs will be looking to senior and upperclassmen leadership to get the team off on the right track. They will have to overcome the loss of the two leading scorers from last season, Emily Webber and Ashli Dunham and find the buckets else-
where. “It is hard to lose such great players as Emily and Ashli,” said Neilsen. “Having a scorer and a point guard like those two can really make a team go and get you some quality wins. We will have to have some girls step up.” Seniors Shelby Houston, 5’6” forward, Victoria Kirk, 5’3” guard, and Mallory Mitchell, 5’5” guard will be leading the charge on the court. Neislen mentioned that senior leadership is going to be a big plus if these three girls can step up and take charge, they need to be the coaches on the court. Juniors Nisha Hull, 5’7” forward, and
Codi Block, 5’5” guard will be getting a lot more minutes after being contributors off the bench a year ago. Seniors Taylor Nelson, 5’7” center, and Melissa Hanagan, 5’7” forward, will be looking to come off season ending injuries from last year and make an impact in the paint. One of the trouble spots for the Bulldogs is the lack of size throughout the team. They will need to use their team speed to overcome that and allow them to get some easy baskets in transition. “We aren’t a very tall team this year,” said Neilsen. “But we will be pushing the ball on the offense and pressing hard on defense to cut down on that disadvantage.
I believe the girls understand their roles and will buy into our transition fast pace of play.” Neilsen also said that the lack of a scorer will hurt them in a few games and that they will have to have good team play and make plays as a team down the stretch. Neilsen believes that his team has a good shot at finishing in the top five overall in the conference with Ar-We-Va, IKM-Manning and Logan-Magnolia being the top competition this year. “This conference has a lot of tough competition and it will heat up as the postseason nears,” said Neilsen. “The girls need to be ready to play.”

West Harrison will be loaded with senior talent this year. Back for the Hawkeyes are starters 5’10” guard Joe Roden, 6’0” forward Ryan Mauseth, 5’10” guard Ethan Earlywine, 5’10” guard Lucas Christensen, 6’1” forward Jordan Pettid and 6’0 forward Jacob Ruffcorn. Mauseth was the team’s leading scorer last year and averaged over 13 points a game. Roden and Christensen each averaged nine points a game and Roden was the team’s steal leader with 81. Other key returners for the Hawkeyes are 5’8 senior guard Kyle Beebe, 6’4” senior forward Jordan Bertelsen, 5’8” junior guard Chase Bertelsen, and 6’0” junior guard Chance Sipple. Freshman guards 6’0” Tyler Bertsal and 5’6” Trey Kirlin could also see playing time this year. “I’m excited to get started,” said Perkins. “Practices are going smooth and we are getting things done. The older kids are not letting the younger kids get away with anything. I’m looking forward to a great season.” Although, the Hawkeyes didn’t have
great success with wins last year, Perkins is very optimistic that his team can change that this year. “If we take care of the ball and make smart decisions, we will be allright,” said Perkins. “The kids are willing to do what it takes and get this program headed in the right direction.” Goals for West Harrison this year are to win the South Division of the Western Valley Conference and to go as far as they can in the tournament to get to state. “We’ll take it one game at a time,” said Perkins. The Hawkeyes will have good depth on their bench and Perkins said they will be emphasizing overall team play this year. “We want to win as a team,” said Perkins. “We are senior oriented this year, and have to work on not becoming overconfident.” Logan-Magnolia and Woodbine are two of the teams Perkins expects to be in the mix for the South Division championship along with MVAO in the North Division. “The kids have a lot of heart,” said Perkins. “Our attitudes are great this year and quitting is not in their vocabulary.”
Harrison County Winter Sports Preview Clark returns for sixth season with Hawkeyes
Page 18
DEANN FRITSCH For The Woodbine and Logan Newspapers Lary Clark begins his sixth season as head coach of the West Harrison girls basketball team. This will mark his 14th year overall of coaching. He previously did an eight-year stint with the boys team. Matt Earlywine will also be back as the assistant coach. The Lady Hawkeyes return only two starters from last year’s 5-16” team, 5’10” senior forward Jacqueline Clark, and 5’8” senior forward Chelsie Wyant. Jacqueline Clark has been a first team all-conference selection the last two years. She averaged over 18 points a game last year and was the team’s leading scorer. She also connected on 41 three-point shots a year ago and was the team’s leading block and steal leader. Other key returners for West Harrison are all sophomores and include 5’9” post Maggie Thomas, 5’10” post Annmarie Davis, 5’7” forward Stephanie Jenson, 5’7” guard Marissa Knott, 5’6” guard Emilee Earlywine and 5’3” guard Kylee Pospisil. Although West Harrison will be playing a lot of sophomores this year, coach Clark is optimistic

about their chances. “We are a more athletic team this year,” said coach Clark. “We should also be quicker and be able to press and run more. We have to control the basketball and limit our turnovers.” Clark is hoping the younger players can develop quickly and gain valuable experience. “Our younger players need to get experience as quickly as possible and step up. We need a lot out of Jackie this year and her three-point shooting, but she is going to need help,” Clark said. Finishing in the upper half of the Southern Division of the Western Valley Conference is one of the Lady Hawkeyes goals this year. Coach Clark would also like to see his team gain the experience they need during the year and advance far into the tournament at the end of the year. Ar-We-Va and Logan-Magnolia are the teams Coach Clark feels will be the toughest in the South Division. In the North Division, he picks Lawton-Bronson and BCIG as the top two contenders. “Experience is the key for us this year,” said Clark. “Jackie is one of the better players in the area, but the others are going to have to step up and score.”
