AN IMPORTANT
Letter from the Editors Welcome to the eighth issue of Nonpareil Magazine. The past year has been amazing for us, and we both have been thrilled to partner with so many talented people. Sadly, though, this issue is our second to last. After Issue 9, Nonpareil Magazine will be closing. It's been a very difficult decision for us, and many factors influenced our final call. Ultimately, with so much going on for us both personally and professionally lately, we're being stretched too thin by the demands of running a magazine with only two main staffers and a copy editor. It's not fair to our contributors who work so hard to develop stories for Nonpareil to have to delay issues when we have to take care of personal issues, or to us when we are trying to juggle this among other external problems. Never fear! Nonpareil isn't suddenly going to vanish without a trace. We will keep back issues live on our respective blogs, Budget Savvy Bride and the Inspired Bride, so they'll always be accessible. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this magazine in some way, and we look forward to sharing our final issue with you!

IN HONOR OF RALPH LAUREN'S ICONIC STYLE , we designed this inspirational shoot on the edge of a
tennis court. It seemed the perfect place to relive the traditional beauty of his timeless lines. We used many classic features as the basis of our design, mimicking the grace Ralph gives to tradition while throwing in whimsical touches of design and a modern color palette.

ABOUT THE DETAILS
For florals we remained true to our timeless look with a centerpiece consisting of large vase of calla lilies, accented by a note of whimsy created by the amazing floral tennis balls Leigh Anne designed specifically for our shoot. Using traditional elements to create an updated look like this one is a major design lesson we can be learn from Ralph Lauren's classic line. Our lovely cake stood out in beauty as a classic heritage piece that a bride would be proud of no matter the changing trends. The basic style of the cake is adorned with beautiful and modern florals, using fancy touches to bring what has always been beautiful into the style of today.
this project has downloadable templates click here to download.
A mirrored table showcased our beautiful classic white serving pieces well, as it reflected the morning court light. Favor boxes with downloadable labels for each guest were wrapped tightly in ribbon securing a personalized tennis ball to be enjoyed after the festivities.

A CHAMPAGNE BAR FOR RALPH
One of the easiest ways to cut down a budget at a wedding or other celebration is to simplify the alcohol choices. I designed this classic champagne bar to do that with elegance while offering a timeless option that would be enjoyed by all. Using classic Champagne cocktail recipes that have a history as rich as Ralph's, even using one of his own personal cocktail favorites of old, we created a compilation that will make your guests feel treasured. I designed labels for each drink with the guest’s name on the front and the recipe on the back, which guests can simply shimmy off their glasses when finished. Not only is this a great way to label the drinks but also a sweet sentiment that will allow your friends to remake the wonderful tastes and relive your celebration even after your special day. You can download the labels and recipes to create your own classic Champagne bar.

THE IDEA Betsy Johnson is a world renowned designer whose style can be described in a variety of words. The words edgy, rock, grunge, and glam all come to mind. When doing a design based on this particular designer, it was important to capture all the feeling of those words, while still keeping in mind the idea of a wedding. THE VENUE The location that was used for this design is the beautiful Merion Tribute House. This location is a gothic designed war memorial located in Merion Station, PA , just outside of Philadelphia.

THE DESIGN The design for this wedding is centered around bold colors, animal print, and the glitz and glam that is Betsy Johnson. The colors used here were hot pinks, black, blue, aqua, and yellow. The centerpiece for this design utilized hot pink roses in a series of vases, with hot pink and leopard ribbon, on a glam style service tray. This was surrounded by black and pink plates on a pink table cloth with black napkins. The cake, made by ultimatefakecakes.com, was a fake cake covered with fondant. It featured a black design on white fondant accented with black feathers and pink ribbon. A fake cake is a great idea when budget is a concern. You can have a small section with real cake for the traditional, cutting of the cake and have sheet cakes for your guests. This way you can get an elegant cake and still save money.

THE BRIDE AND BRIDESMAID Of course the central part of almost any wedding is the bridal gown. In this case, the dress was a Betsy Johnson dress that is stylish, glamorous, and fun. The bride had metallic silver shoes to help make the whole outfit “pop”. She also had a handmade birdcage veil that is easy for anyone to do. The best way to go about it is to order a kit. This will give the proper materials and instructions. It starts with a plastic clear hair comb and Russian netting in the color of your choice. In this case the color was yellow. Take a length of clear plastic thread and secure it to one end of the comb. Then thread the thread around the comb and through the netting. Once finished, secure the other end to the comb. Now the veil can be trimmed to the appropriate length. We added a great hot pink DIY flower hair clip to the veil. Finally, the bride was accessorized with some tasteful yet glamorous jewelry to tie the whole design together.

The bridesmaid was dressed in a short, blue, bell shaped dress that was also stylish and fun. Her accessories include some fabulous jewelry and a DIY flower hair clip. The flower hair clip is fun yet surprisingly simple to make. First, cut out concentric circles of poly-satin fabric that is the color of your choosing. In this case, the flower was done in blue. Using a lighter, or heat gun, heat the edges of the fabric pieces to make it curl. Then use fabric glue or a hot glue gun, begin gluing the layers of fabric together, starting with the largest and working toward the smallest. Now glue the flower to some felt. Attach the felt to the clip and ornament the middle of the flower with anything of your choosing; in this case we used a blue jewel. This same process was used on the bride’s hair accessory as well as the flower on the bridesmaid dress. BOUQUETS Instead of a traditional bouquet, the bride is carrying a pink feather bouquet with sparkling flowers. The bridesmaid is carrying a black feather bouquet with sparkling blue flowers.

STATIONERY The stationery for this wedding design is a twist on the traditional as well. It is a mix of modern, glam, and gothic. The base of the design mixes black, pink, and animal print. It also uses a gothic style font. The print is mounted on a sparkling black backdrop.

PROJECT BY ASHLEY BROOKE OF ASHLEY BROOKE DESIGNS
There are few things more fun or liberating than a great Girl’s Night Out! At Ashley Brooke Designs, we like to pull out all the stops: the high heels, the sparkly jewels, and shimmering champagne! So instead of calling and texting your girlfriends, why not go all out with these easy as pie fill-in invitations that will surely set the tone for a fabulous girls night out? The design itself is inspired by a Marchesa dress from the Fall 2010 collection. A grey cocktail dress with some subtle sparkle, it ’s the perfect party dress and we couldn’ t imagine our fashion sketch donning any other look. The only thing missing from the design was the same sparkle from the original. We figured there was no better way to get that idea across than to add a little hand-glittering. Glittering an invitation, card, etc. is so easy to do and makes all the difference in the look and feel of a piece. It especially sets the mood for a Girl’s Night and we’ve broken everything down for you so you can create the look at home:

POSEN INSPIRATION FROM ZAC POSEN
DESIGN BY MELANIE BLODGETT AND NATALIA ANDERSON INVITATIONS BY NATALIA ANDERSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH FAUBUS After Zac Posen’s recent runway show, he took his bow before adoring fans in maroon slacks, a lilac shirt, a coral suit jacket and matching bolo tie, providing a sharp contrast to the sea of black attire in the audience. His collection employed bold colors and patterns, ranging from electric yellow accessories and orange floral jumpsuits. Not to say that’s the limit of Zac Posen’s talents: remember the graceful peach pleated gown that Gwyneth donned at the Oscars? Although only 30, Zac Posen has proven he designs beautiful creations and that those who wear him are guaranteed a spot on the best-dressed list.
you can base your own event off of an entire collection or just one striking element. For this reception scene, Zac Posen’s love of color and pattern was a clear focus; but, also, his reoccurring use of pleats and bows—as seen in even the most minute details. The theme of sewing was also part of the event’s inspiration, with the wooden spool place card holders. A centerpiece made of mini cakes adds an unexpected surprise. The mix of elements comes off as bold, fun, and memorable with a feminine touch just like a Zac Posen show.
When it comes to seeking inspiration for a wedding, fashion shows are a practical choice. Fashion shows are always a season ahead, there is a clear color palette, and

PLEATED INVITATIONS
Like the rest of our fashion-inspired wedding, the goal for the invitation suite was to channel our inner Zac Posen. The font used for the suite was chosen because we wanted something flirty but also sophisticated. The variation of thick and thin, curly and straight lines served this purpose. The pleating in the fabric is a throwback to Zac Posen’s use of line and structure seen in his designs. Sewing the invitation with colorful corresponding threads added balance, dimension, and a geometrical pattern to the suite.
nice finished edge. Lay the fabric pieces on the invitation in the pattern desired (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) overlapping the fabric strips so the unfinished edge does not show. Our strips were spaced about 1/2 an inch apart. While laying out the strips, make sure to center the fabric so the excess fabric is hanging over equally on both sides of the invitation. You will probably use about 5-7 strips of fabric per invitation depending on how far apart your spacing is. When the desired layout is complete, the fabric will look as though it has been pleated. Glue the fabric pieces together using fabric glue but do NOT glue the fabric to the paper during this step.
SUPPLIES
STEP THREE
design program, like Illustrator or In Design linen or cotton cover stock paper cotton fabric fabric glue ruler rotary blade for cutting fabric or fabric scissors iron and ironing board colored thread to correspond with fabric sewing machine paper cutter solid colored cover stock paper (optional)
Once the fabric glue dries you will be ready to trim and sew your “pleated” fabric so that it will fit perfectly on the top of the invitation. Lay the fabric down on a table, print side down. Lay the invitation paper onto the fabric. Measure out 1/2 of an inch and mark the fabric on both sides and the bottom (but not the top of the invitation paper). You will want to take a ruler and mark the back side or nonprint side of the fabric so that you can cut away a piece of fabric that is 1/2 of an inch larger than the invitation paper on both sides and the bottom. Trim the fabric according to the marks you have made. With the fabric print side up, you will tuck back the 1/2 inch fabric overhang, iron-press, and sew edges on your sewing machine. The finished fabric piece should be the same width as your invitation. Line up the bottom edge of the sewn fabric to the bottom edge of the invitation, center and attach using fabric glue. (Option 2): Rather than attaching the fabric to the invitation with glue, you may opt to sew it directly to the invitation. To do this you can simply fold the excess fabric over the invitation itself, attach with sewing machine and then back the invitation with a solid colored cover stock to hide raw fabric.
STEP ONE With your design software, format the text of your invitation with all the necessary information for the event. The size of our invitation was 4 5/8 inches x 6 1/8 inches, which would fit into an A6 invitation envelope. The size of our RSVP card was 3 3/8 inches x 4 3/4 inches so it could fit into a 4-bar return envelope. If you will be printing the invitations and RSVP cards yourself or at your local copy center, we recommend you format your invitation 2-up per page and the RSVP card 4-up per page. Your printer will be able to cut the invitations for you at the above dimensions or you can cut them yourself using a paper cutter if you printed them at home. Paper cutting is also a service most copy centers offer. STEP TWO
Cut fabric into strips 8 inches long and about 1 1/4 inches wide. With the print side up, fold over each strip on the long edge about 1/2 of an inch and iron-press, giving it a
STEP FOUR
The last step is to add threading detail using your sewing machine. We sewed 5 slightly slanted rows of colored thread down one side of our invitation but this part of the design is up to you. The threading will give your invitation a great finished look while securely attaching the fabric to the invitation. Repeat steps above with other invitation collateral.

wool felt in the color of your choice fabric scissors hot glue gun and glue or needle and thread pin backs STEP ONE Cut a strip of wool felt. The longer it is, the bigger the bow. To get a similar size to ours, make it about 10 inches by 1 inch. STEP TWO
Starting at one end, fold your felt over to meet the middle of the strip leaving about 1/2 inch hanging off the end. Do the same for the other side. STEP THREE
Either take a hot glue gun and glue the folds down or use a needle and thread to hand stitch felt together. STEP FOUR
Cut out a rectangle of felt that will fit around the middle of the bow, about 1/2 inch by 1 1/2 inches, depending on the size you’ve made the bow. STEP FIVE
Pinch the top and bottom of the bow from the middle to make the bow shape and attach the rectangle of fabric (in the front and back) with glue or thread. STEP SIX
Cut a little triangle shape out of the tails of your bow. STEP SEVEN
Use your hot glue gun to attach a pin back.

The great thing about wedding style inspiration is that it can come from anywhere. A wallpaper sample, a favorite television show, a color combination. DIY SPOOLS HOLDERS
For an easy way to create fashion-inspired place card holders, find vintage wooden thread spools (at a antique store or there are many options on Etsy). Take a coping saw with a fine blade to cut a small groove in the top of the wooden spool. With the right groove depth, your place card will fit right in for a unique presentation.

DIY TISSUE FLOWERS
Tissue flowers make for great decor on a blank wall at your reception. They can be made in various sizes and displayed on a wall for a striking look. To make your tissue paper flowers, stack 8-20 sheets of tissue paper (more sheets for the larger the size flower). Fold the tissue into 1 inch accordion folds, creasing with each fold. Tie a piece of fishing wire in a double-knit at the middle of the folded stack. With scissors, trim the ends of tissue into rounded or pointy shapes. A VERY
MODERN MIXER INSPIRATION FROM THAKOON
DESIGN BY MICHELLE CORMACK AND CATHERINE CHOQUETTE PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATHERINE CHOQUETTE
One of the most enjoyable aspects of planning a wedding is knowing you and your groom get to have your best friends and closest family members with you as you start your life together. Back in the day, you were probably all part of the same crowd. But in today’s world? Not as likely. We go away to college, we meet new people, we move away from our hometown for work. Many a modern bride gets to her rehearsal dinner with a wedding party that is meeting each other for the first time. But it doesn’t have to be that way! Instead, plan a very modern mixer. It’s an ideal “Wednesday or Thursday before the wedding” event and an easy way for your groomsmen and bridesmaids to get to know each other.
58
And if you do all live in the same town? Host the mixer shortly after you announce your engagement and have chosen your wedding attendants. It’s the perfect party to get them excited about the wedding planning to come. Our event planning was inspired by the work of fashion designer Thakoon. His clothes are just a little edgy and urban with incredible texture, layering and wonderful attention to detail. Feminine but not flowery; stylish but not trendy; Thakoon is a celebration of what it means to be modern. Ah, modern love. Ain’t it grand?

MIX AND MINGLE OVER FINGER FOODS
SET THE MOOD
The last thing you need to stress about three days before your wedding is cooking for your friends. Take the fuss (and expense) out of the equation with a buffet of casual but modern bite size treats. Those chicks in blankets? We cut up turkey breakfast sausage and wrapped it in Pillsbury biscuit dough. The mini quiches baked up in a jiffy with store-bought pastry shells. Easy-to-do personal touches like rub-on lettering for the cutlery and colourful touches like be-ribboned picks and fun food labels make the table pop.
Our comfy decor, including conversation corners and stylish accents, was set up our party right in our own backyard. We used furniture, candles, throws and pillows we already owned, adding no hassle or expense!
Our menu included caesar salad with parmesan crisps, cheese and tomato skewers, mini quiches, shrimp cocktail, chicks in blankets, caramelized onion dip with veggies, cheese straws, and Grand Marnier chocolate mousse. We've provided label and menu downloads to help you replicate the food spread.
If the forecast calls for rain? No worries! This fun and casual mixer can be moved inside with little fuss.
GIMME SOME SUGAR!
If you don’t tell, we won’t either. The chocolate mousse just may have come from a mix, with a few tablespoons of liquer to make it special. Serve it up in funky wooden cones and give your guests the opportunity to add their own orange peel and cherries on top. Textured cardboard espresso cups are the perfect size for a little shot of Grand Marnier on the side.
CHEERS!
We pre-mixed Bloody Marys, gin martinis and Shirley Temples and served them up in fun containers with DIY garnishes. Re-purposed French lemonade bottles add a touch of whimsy. Corrugated cups and felt cuffs add some texture. (Pssst: those cuffs were so easy to make. Using a Starbucks cardboard cuff as a template, we cut out felt cuffs, secured them with a little hot glue, and added a couple wooden buttons for personalization. The best part? Our guests can re-use them!). A little gray flannel on the table and some fun party labels and texture and a festive flair.

INSPIRATION I’ve loved art for as long as I can remember and that eventually lead to a passion for all things design. Inspired by fashion, we drew inspiration for this shoot from the sexy yet sustainable style of Stella McCartney. We fell in love with a specific dress from the Stella McCartney Resort Collection; the portraits of flowers transposed on silks and cotton: anemones, hydrangeas, tulips that were reminiscent of an English garden. We wanted to translate the Stella McCartney feel of cheeky and playful into a tablescape, stationery suite, dessert table and bridal design. To achieve this we chose a bold color palette of redoranges, blues, and ivories, blacks interlaced with a lovely capsule of bold botanical prints. The amazingly charming atmosphere of the restored Westin Book Cadillac Hotel provided the perfect backdrop for a fashion inspired bridal luncheon.
68
nonpareil magazine  nonpareilmag.com
DESIGN For the tablescape design we went with a large round table, ivory matte satin table linens, royal blue dinner plate layered with a gold charger and gold chiavari chairs. The main centerpiece was created from royal blue hydrangeas from Holland and bright orange traditional roses in a black vessel. Keeping with the overall bold and playful aesthetic in mind, we decided to add small bunches of blue hydrangea around the main centerpiece in small gold mercury glass vases for added texture and visual interest.

For the dessert table design we used a 6’ table with ivory matte satin linen to continue the look of the inspiration dress. The main design elements were created following the same floral pattern design from the tablescape on the candy wraps, chocolate box labels, mini wine bottles and table name labels. We worked with Sweet Heather Anne on the cake and cookie design to match the look and feel of overall design. Balancing the bold tones in the color palette with large expanses of pure ivory was a lot of fun. The floral pattern was hand painted on to reflect and tie together the style of the inspiration dress.

THE EVENT DESIGN
We decided to focus on the overall design aesthetic of Oscar de la Renta. We wanted to capture all the classic Spanish details that he shows beautifully throughout all his collections, influenced by his time studying in Spain. The ball gown dress was the focal point, with its countless flowing layers and gorgeous volume. Las Colinas Canals was the perfect location to document this gilded affair, with its Spanish architecture and flowing river canal that complemented the overall theme and direction of the event. We used Oscar de la Renta's Spanish background as inspiration to create a dramatic and organic tablescape by mixing fresh fruits and florals together to create a stunning event. Using rich colors like Chocolate Truffle, Smoke Bichon, and Rumba Red, we were able to create a luxe setting, enhanced by the gorgeous outdoors at the Riverside Canal. The organic Spanish details were echoed throughout the event. From the deep rich colors to the fruit and vino bar to the authentic Catalan cuisine mentioned on the menu. We wanted to create a setting that felt very alive and rich with elegant Spanish flair. The venue played an enormous role: the curves and flows of the arches matched that of the ball gown dress, but also provided a dramatic backdrop in the photos.
The sweet bar was the perfect addition to the setting. As an alternative to the classic white wedding cake, we provided a more organic approach with Spanish sweets, such as the popular tarta de frutas, roasted chocolate almonds, and Spanish truffles filled with cinnamon, cayenne pepper, ancho chili all paired with spanish hot chocolate and fresh sangria. Keeping with the overall feel, gorgeous calligraphy was incorporated into the invitation and menu design, as well as on the wine bottles. The invitations and menus, which were inked on plexiglass, were placed over gold rimmed vintage china for a glimmering, luxury look. To compliment the shimmering tablescape, candelabras, lush linen and other rentals were incorporated.
