Annual Report 2107
Year of Giving With 2017 being the “Year of Giving” in the UAE, what a great year it was for Noor Dubai Foundation. As we reflect with you on our journey, we feel incredibly proud of our achievements which include benefitting over 27 million people through our treatment and preventive programs, re-defining our strategic direction for the next 5 years, and expanding our scope of strategic partnerships with the UAE private and public sector to further improve our local and international programs. At home in the UAE, we succeeded in providing free vision screening to over 8000 individuals in 2017 through our award winning outreach program, the mobile eye clinic. Through a continued partnership with the Permanent Committee of Labors Affairs in Dubai, we were able to screen over 1500 laborers in 16 different sites. Continuing on the success of the 2016 campaign for vision screening in community schools in collaboration with Dubai Health Authority (DHA), we successfully screened over 5,000 students through 27 visits in 11 different schools across the UAE. The clinic also expanded its scope of services by adding new machines to screen glaucoma through a partnership with Rivoli Eyezone. Noor Dubai Foundation also successfully continued with the hospital based treatment program in the UAE treating 149 cases with critical eye diseases and limited financial capability in partnership with the social services department in DHA and Dubai Hospital. In an effort to raise awareness on dealing with visually impaired students, Noor Dubai also launched a 6 week awareness campaign under the name “Through their Eyes”, in collaboration with Dubai based child psychologists and the DHA school health team. The team successfully visited 8 schools and addressed 5000 students during the campaign period. In the international space, we completed 3 mobile eye camps in Bangladesh, Eritrea, and for the first time in Nigeria. Through this outreach program in 2017, we succeeded in screening over 13,000 patients for eye diseases and providing the diagnosis for treatment, thereby contributing to improved social and economic conditions of the individuals who have received treatment through this program. Noor Dubai Foundation also continued its efforts in eliminating trachoma in the Amhara region of Ethiopia through a valuable partnership with The Carter Center with over 5 million doses of medication distributed in 2017 In an effort to further broaden our scope, improve the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of our programs, we organized a 2 day workshop with key stakeholders and eye care leaders, both locally and internationally, aiming towards developing a new 5 year strategic plan. We also developed 3 new administrative systems and were awarded 3 ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certifications in quality, sustainability, and social responsibility, becoming one of the first specialized charities to receive 3 ISO certificates in the MENA region. As always, thank you for your continuous support and we look forward to celebrating even bigger achievements during the “Year of Zayed” with all those who continue to believe in our noble cause. It is with your support that we can continue our fight against preventable blindness and pave the way in this field, changing lives both abroad and at home.

Annual Report 2107
“THAT NIGHT I COULD NOT SLEEP” SAID ABDUL AZIZ. “I COULD NOT STOP THINKING ABOUT WHAT THE DOCTORS WOULD TELL ME. WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE AGAIN?” One day, he heard from his friend the best news, that there was a radio announcement about a free eye camp from Noor Dubai Foundation in Kaduna. When Abdul Aziz and his brother reached
the camp on the first day, they were a bit late and it was already crowded so they decided to go
back. On the second day they reached the camp little earlier and managed to get registered.
Excited at the prospect of getting treated, Abdul Aziz patiently waited his turn to be checked and was thrilled when the doctors suggested to admit him for further treatments.
He was then transferred to the general hospital where the operation facility was arranged for the
patients. Finally the moment came, and Abdul Aziz’s cataract was treated through surgery. He was then discharged to his house and was asked to come back the next morning for a post operation follow up. “That night I could not sleep” said Abdul Aziz. “I could not stop thinking
about what the doctors would tell me. Will I be able to see again?” I hoped from the depth of my heart that I would be able to work hard for my family. As difficult a job it was, he hoped to return
to that roundabout walking and moving without any fear as the real difficulty was living in darkness and not being able to support his family.
The next morning he made his way to the hospital and as he waited for the doctors to remove the
bandages thoughts were racing through his mind. He couldn’t wait for his turn. As his turn came and the doctors removed his bandage, he slowly opened his eyes the vision was bit blurry and fuzzy but after few minutes things were perfectly clear and he saw a sea of faces smiling at him.
“ I cannot describe what I felt at that moment. The happiness, the hope, the gratitude” said Abdul Aziz. The Noor Dubai team gifted him a t- shirt as a memento to remind him never to lose hope. He joined the rest of the patients as together they prayed and thanked God for the sending a miracle their way
Abdul Aziz thanked the Noor Dubai team for helping him get his life back, his hope back and he was grateful to be able to support his family again.
