Welcome Hello friends! I believe that the idea of a Country House lifestyle is all about creating inviting and relaxed surroundings. A place you call home that celebrates the warmth and comfort of a home and its distinct seasons. I hope to inspire you to have a little Country House in your everyday life, to see the honest beauty in a garden. No matter where you call home, city or country or in-between, a garden—big or small— has much to offer. It’s all about the simplicity of Country House living that we can share. I want to bring you to my country house, what I call my Connecticut Country House (p.8), to introduce you to my favorite garden plants as we squish along in our muck shoes in and around the gardens. Come along with me to the island of Nantucket (p.130), where I hope to inspire you to take your own garden tours street side—quietly taking in the beauty of thoughtful gardens that surround us. The best way to learn about gardening and garden design is to experience gardens in person. Nora Murphy Country House is proud to collaborate with the Garden Conservancy, a non-profit organization that is committed to saving and sharing outstanding American gardens for the education and inspiration for us all. I view the land that Connecicut Country House was built on in 1767 as a floor plan, taking into consideration all of the house’s sight lines. I’m always mindful that the views from inside the house looking out, are as attractive as the multiple views looking towards the house.

Faux Real. There’s nothing wrong with changing up the flowers on your entrances from faux to live. A pair of English Ivy and Eugenia topiaries take turns framing the Coop’s front door, while the baskets of blooms interchange from spring’s living petunias to faux white hydrangeas that best withstand hot summer days. spr ing/summer 2018

Looking good. Petunias will keep blooming if they’re regularly deadheaded. When the stems get too leggy, cut them back to the edge of the container, give them a dose of liquid fertilizer, and they’ll start growing and re-blooming again.

Planning a Garden is Like Arranging a Bouquet
I approach the building of my flowerbeds in the same way I build a bouquet. It all starts with a good foundation of greens. Here I’ve created structure by starting with full flowering branches of Fuzzy Deutzia and wild roses. Ethereal chartreuse Lady’s Mantle flowers come next (a great filler in the garden as in an arrangement). ‘Karl Rosenfield’ peonies are the crowning touch in color, scale, and fragrance! spr ing/summ er 2018

A cottage garden-style bouquet is filled with old-fashioned flowers in a palette of soft hues.
The best time to cut flowers is either early in the morning or late in the day. Take a bucket of cold water into the garden with you and as you cut each stem, stick it right into the water. As you arrange the flowers, using sharp shears, be sure to cut each stem on an angle. The ends of woody stems (like flowering branches) need to be smashed with a hammer so the plant can take in water.

Front and center. Hostas fill voids in my garden beds. When they become overcrowded, I’ll divide them early in the season before they leaf out. Their long stemmed delicate, lavender flowers, as well as their striped leaves add whimsy to my cut arrangements.

Peonies
are my absolute favorite! They bloom early to mid-June, and I’m strategic about when I cut flowers for bouquets. A full-blown flower will not last long, so cut stems with blooms that are half-way open, and give your finished bouquet a fine mist of cool water.

Mock Orange
The orange blossomy fragrant flowers of the Mock Orange are second to none. This shrub is easy to grow and maintenance free! When an older shrub looks like it needs a re-fresh, cut the entire shrub back to the ground.

Lilacs
The lilac shrubs are what I impatiently wait for each spring. It amazes me just how much one cut flower stem can fill a room with its sweetest scent! The best time to prune your lilacs is immediately after the flowers have faded.

My ‘Eden’ rose, also known as Rosa ‘Pierre de Ronsard’ (named after a great French poet), is an old-fashioned delicate, cup-shaped rose that blooms from June through September and is made up of 70 fragrant petals!

Have you ever seen a yellow peony? I hadn’t until I found this Itoh peony, ‘Bertzella’, at my local nursery. Named after the Japanese nurseryman Toichi Itoh, who in 1948 was the first to succeed at crossing yellow tree peonies with the common garden peony to cultivate this beautifully bushy peony plant that creates blooms the size of dessert plates!

Putting down roots. Daylilies will grow for many years with minimal care, but the plants will produce more flowers if they’re divided about every 5 years in late summer after they’re done blooming. Dig up the entire plant and cut the clump apart into smaller portions. Before replanting, use shears to trim the foliage back to a height of 6”.
A pretty cottage-like edging for paths and front of borders, Lady’s Mantle is a perennial that first blooms in June, and with timely deadheading, will re-bloom again in summer.

Astilbes, with their delicate plumes, love a shady locale and need very little attention. The beautiful color and texture of its flowers (and leaves) make them perfectly at home at the base of my Andromeda and Azalea shrubs.
‘Pink Beauty’ Boltonia Asteroids, is a native American wildflower that grows to 4 feet tall and is related to the aster. Its wild, billowy look is a perfect filler in the back of a perennial garden, and makes a great cut filler in late summer arrangements.

As a designer and gardener, I’ve been inspired by the remarkable gardens of Nantucket ever since we spent our honeymoon there over 30 years ago. Since then, every summer getaway on Nantucket would not be complete without my own self-guided garden tour viewed from the wonky old brick sidewalks in town.
