My name is Marina Filipovic, I’m 23 years old, I live and work both in Osijek and Zagreb in Croatia. On the web I’m better known as Marinshe, a nickname my grandfather gave me when I was little. I finished high school in Osijek and am at the moment working toward a degree in economics at the University of Osijek. Beside photography, I have been practicing singing for well over 14 years and have worked in my high school and college web teams in web and graphic design. At 16 I even had my own web design company where I gained my first business experiences, as well as an interest in photography. I always liked photography. Since it wasn’t possible to share photos over the web or have them stored online, photos from my «analogue» period are safely kept in the family albums. As a child I took photos of flowers, nature and my friends. In the autumn of 2006. I started working with professional equipment, having bought a Fuji S3 Pro and my first Nikkor 50 mm f/1,4 lens. Then things started to get serious. I take photos every single day and publish them on my sites: the official site http://www. marinshe.com, my Croatian photo blog http://www.marinshe.bloger.hr and my deviantArt profile http://marinshe.deviantart.com. Now, I have two cameras: a Fuji S3 Pro and Fuji S5 Pro. I use the following lenses: Nikkor 80-200mm f/2,8, Nikkor 50mm f/1,4,

Nikkor 60mm f/2,6 Makro, Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6; as well as Nikon SB600 flash. Sometimes I use a Manfrotto stand while taking landscape photographs. I don’t differentiate between commercial and private work. My goal is that all my works have value as artworks and I think I achieve that most of the time. It’s hard, but I try as hard as I can. When you do a lot of creative work, there’s always the danger of getting into a routine and losing fresh ideas. Because of that I take a few days off to gather energy and new ideas. Every photographer that is any good, can find it’s way into the viewer’s heart and capture his or her imagination. Photos that I’ve taken for my own purposes have appeared as cover photos for magazines and books, as well as in exhibitions. My photos have appeared on the covers of the french magazine PHOTO, Livingstone, Modra Lasta as well as seven books from croatian publisher Algoritam. A lot of them were published in magazines: Extra, Livingstone, Digital Photo Mag, Bulb Magazin, Grazia, Večernji list, Jutarnji list, Modra Lasta, etc. Some of them have even appeared on Croatian national TV as well as local Slavonian TV stations. Five works have apperaed as examples of various photographic theories in the official Mexican schoolbook for high schools. I’ve had four solo exhibitions and about ten group exhibitions. Deoarece înainte nu se puteau pune fotografii pe internet, le-am păstrat cu grijă în albumele de familie. Când eram copil, fotografiam flori, natura şi pe prietenii mei. În toamna anului 2006, am început să folosesc un echipament profesionist, am cumpărat un Fuji S3 Pro şi primul meu obiectiv Nikkor 50 mm f/1,4. Apoi, lucrurile au început să fie serioase. Nu fac diferenţa între fotografiile pe care le fac la muncă şi cele din timpul liber, căci scopul meu este să le transform în opere de artă. Este greu, dar mă străduiesc cât pot. Când munca ta implică creativitate există pericolul de a cădea într-o rutină şi a-ţi pierde ideile noi. Din cauza aceasta, îmi iau câteva zile libere pentru a mă încărca cu energie şi cu idei noi. Orice fotograf bun ştie să găsească calea spre inima privitorului şi să-i capteze imaginaţia. Fotografiile pe care le-am făcut în timpul liber au apărut pe coperta unor reviste şi cărţi, precum şi în diverse expoziţii. Fotografiile mele au apărut pe coperta revistei franceze PHOTO, Livingstone, Modra Lasta, precum şi pe coperta a patru cărţi editate de Algoritam. Multe au fost publicate în următoarele reviste: Extra, Livingstone, Digital Photo Mag, Bulb Magazin, Grazia, Večernji list, Jutarnji list, Modra Lasta, etc. Unele au apărut pe postul naţional din Croaţia şi pe posturile locale din Slovenia. Patru fotografii au servit drept modele pentru diferitele teorii în fotografie într-un manual de liceu din Mexic. Am avut patru expoziţii personale şi în jur de 10 cu alţi fotografi. I’ve been resident in the UK for 5 years (I was born in Slovakia) and I work full time as a telecommunications engineer. I commute monthly to the Czech Republic to be with my fiancée but it was in England that my passion for artistic photography really began. I have always been artistic in my approach to life and now I hope that this is evident in my photographic work “space” and “simplicity” and are the key ingredients that I want to display imaginatively in my pictures. The series of photos you can see represents my “space” and “simplicity” theme along with an interest in everyday objects. In this case, an apple and its association with a piece of string, a goldfish coupled with a fishing hook, another apple and razor blade combination... My idea here was: “we see the final image (puppet on a string for example) but WHO is responsible or who the puppet master behind these images is?”

Sunt rezident în Marea Britanie de 5 ani (m-am născut în Slovacia) şi am o slujbă full time de inginer în telecomunicaţii. Fac naveta Marea Britanie-Cehia pentru a putea fi cu logodnica mea. În Anglia mi-am descoperit pasiunea mea pentru fotografie. Mereu am abordat viaţa într-un mod artistic, iar acum sper că acest lucru este evident în compoziţiile mele fotografice ale căror ingrediente cheie sunt “spaţiul” şi “simplitatea”. Fotografiile din această serie ilustrează tema de “spaţiu” şi “simplicitate” precum şi interesul meu pentru obiectele care ne înconjoară – un măr şi asocierea lui cu o bucată de sfoară, un peştişor de aur cuplat cu un ac de pescuit, un alt măr şi un aparat de ras... Ideea este următoarea: “vedem produsul finit (de exemplu o păpuşă cu sfori) dar CINE a creat asta sau cine este păpuşarul din spatele acestor imagini?”

I shoot a lot of different subjects, but this collection will focus on Norwegian scenes in tone mapped HDR. The collection were all taken in Norway, on various trips I’ve made the last few years. The Nordic light and the rough weather is great for landscape photography. When I discovered HDR and tone mapping back in 2006, I developed a passion for it which I still possess. I’ve found that people either love it or hate it, but I just think that if you can find the right subjects, the technique can give you some stunning results that could not have been achieved without it.

Fotografiile mele abordează diverse subiecte, dar această serie cuprinde peisaje din Norvegia realizate prin tehnica HDR. Am făcut aceste fotografii în Norvegia, pe parcursul călătoriilor mele din ultimii ani. Lumina nordică şi vremea urâtă sunt tocmai bune pentru fotografia de peisaj. Am făcut o pasiune pentru tehnica HDR şi Tone Mapping încă de când am descoperit-o în 2006 şi până în prezent. Mi-am dat seama că oamenii fie o iubesc, fie o urăsc, însă eu cred că dacă găseşti subiectele potrivite, această tehnică poate da rezultate extraordinare.

Sometimes, I try to connect the sound with the light. To hear every tone and semitone, to attribute a musical note to every noise and then listen the tune… I wondered if the light follows the same process. If the retina distinguishes every change of light intensity and taught the cameras to do the same thing. Then, isn’t photography a musical score which deserves to be watched, read and listened? Photography is my refuge from the daily routine. The lens helps me to see the world as I wish to be and to feel it. Here, I gather my thoughts, my emotions and my feelings. And it accepts me… it always accepts me in it’s world.

Percep lumina ca pe o mângâiere a ochiului, se filtrează prin suflet şi naşte gânduri curate. Uneori încerc să asociez sunetul cu lumina. Să poţi să auzi fiecare ton şi semiton, fiecărui zgomot să-i atribui o notă muzicală, iar apoi să auzi melodia... M-am întrebat dacă la fel e cu lumina. Dacă retina distinge fiecare modificare a intensităţii de lumină şi a învăţat aparatele foto să facă la fel, atunci nu e fotografia partitura unei melodii care trebuie privită, citită şi ascultată? Fotografia îmi e ca un refugiu din rutina de zi cu zi. Prin lentilă privesc lumea aşa cum vreau sa o vad şi să o simt. Aici îmi adun gandurile, stările şi sentimentele. Şi mă primeşte.. mă tot primeşte în lumea ei.

Sunt specializat în portrete, modă, şi reportaje. Îmi place fotografia, iar arta mă fascinează: filmele, designul, moda, pictura, sculptura... Toate acestea reprezintă modul meu de a respira, de a mă exprima şi de a-mi câştiga existenţa. De asemenea, lucrez mult pe internet. Mă fascinează. I have been a professional photographer for many years. I’ve worked for two photography studios, an advertising agency, and taught at several universities and colleges including Bradley University, St. Norbert College, and The University of Wisconsin Green Bay. My work has ranged from sports, to advertising/product, photojournalism, nature, art and portraiture. Throughout my career I have always freelanced and done selfassigned artistic work as well. I like to make images that are beautiful, moving and thought provoking. I currently live and work in De Pere, Wisconsin, USA. The creation of this seriesQueens Rule: Black vs White was a personal photographic art project. The model is Miss Fawn. She has been my creative partner, main model and steadfast friend for a couple of years. The Queens Rule series was as much her creation as mine. She planed the clothing and make-up so as to make these split image visions easy to accomplish. Planning is

everything in creating images like these. We laid out the table split and mirrored between black and white. One of the most fun choices I made was to do some of the images with the backgrounds split black/white, while others are one unified background tone. The split backgrounds create a push and pull of tension between the two opponents, placing them in their own worlds or dark and light. Of course there is also a good VS evil element to these characters. Yet they are clearly twins, or mirror images of each other. The images with a solid white background tend to unite the characters more, placing them in the same room together. And the last image, the Stalemate, demonstrates both Fawn’s masterful costuming and my best photo manipulation techniques. The character in the center is the Stalemate, and she clearly has an intimate relationship with both Queens. She is the union of the other two, and the buffer zone between them. This was a wonderful exercise in the playful usage of symbolism, and also a tribute to Chess, the greatest game of all time.

În prezent, locuiesc şi lucrez în De Pere, Wisconsin, SUA. Această serie - Queen’s Rule: Black vs White (Jocul Reginei: Negru vs Alb) – este un proiect personal. Modelul se numeşte Domnişoara Fawn. Ea a fost partenerul meu creativ, principalul model şi un prieten de nădejde de câţiva ani. Seria The Queen’s Rule (Jocul Reginei) a fost atât creaţia mea cât şi a ei. Ea a ales vestimentaţia şi machiajul astfel încât aceste imagini în oglindă
să fie realizate cât mai uşor. Planificarea este foarte importantă în genul acesta de fotografii. Am aşezat tabla de şah astfel încât să se creeze o oglindă între alb-negru. Una dintre cele mai amuzante alegeri a fost să fac fotografii pe un fundal împărţit între alb-negru în timp ce restul avea o singură coloratură. Acest tip de fundal creează presiune şi încordare între cele două adversare, plasându-le în lumea lor a întunericului şi a luminii. Bineînţeles că aceste personaje au şi ceva diabolic. Sunt gemene sau o imagine în oglindă. Fotografiile cu fundalul alb tind să unească şi mai mult personajele, plasându-le în aceeaşi încăpere. Iar ultima fotografie, The Stalemate (Pat), ilustrează atât costumul tiranic al lui Fawn cât şi cea mai bună tehnică a mea de prelucrare foto. Personajul central reprezintă Patul şi este evidentă relaţia lui strânsă cu cele două Regine. Ea este legătura între celelalte două personaje şi zona tampon dintre ele. A fost un exerciţiu frumos în care m-am jucat cu simbolurile şi am adus un tribut şahului, cel mai bun joc al tuturor timpurilor.

I was born in Dallas, Texas to a selfless woman named Melissa. A few days later I was in Los Angeles, California beginning the rest of this life with my new adopted Mom, Dad, and big sister.
A year later, I went to Australia on my first trip abroad (Mexico doesn’t count for southern Californians) and fell in love with collecting experiences. Since then I have traveled as much as I can and will continue to do so. More often than not my only companion on these trips has been a camera.
M-am născut în Dallas, Texas. Mama mea, Melissa m-a abandonat, iar după câteva zile m-am trezit în Los Angeles, California, începând o nouă viaţă alături de noua mea familie adoptivă (mama, tata şi o soră mai mare). O mare parte a copilăriei mele mi-am petrect-o la bunicii mei materni. Bunicul m-a învăţat cum să trag cu arma la vârsta de 5 ani şi am crescut cu visul de a ajunge un ţintaş de elită asemenea lui Carlos Hathcock. La vârsta de 19 ani am renunţat la acest vis şi într-o perioadă de rătăcire, fără rost a vieţii mele am urmat un curs de fotografie la Colegiul Santa Monica. Am simţin un click în interiorul meu (iertaţi-mi jocul de cuvinte). Am început să lipsesc de la cursuri pentru a face fotografii, şi aşa a început totul. După un an, am mers în Australia, aceasta fiind prima mea călătorie în străinătate (Mexic nu se pune pentru cei care locuiesc în sudul Californiei) şi mi-am dat seama că îmi place la nebunie să călătoresc. De atunci, am călătorit cât de mult am putut şi voi continua să fac asta. Un adevărat însoţitor în aceste călătorii a fost aparatul meu foto.

I spent much of my childhood in the care of my maternal Grandparents. It was this Grandfather who taught me how to shoot a gun when I was 5, and I grew up dreaming that I’d one day be a great sniper like Carlos Hathcock. When I was 19, I gave up that dream, and during a very empty and aimless period of my life I took a basic photography course at Santa Monica College. I felt an internal click (excuse the pun) deep within me. I started to constantly ditch class to go take pictures, and so it began.

He learnt how to live. He lives, as a man, as an absolute human being – he doesn’t let his tissues, glands, reflexes lead his life as we do… I looked at him while he was cleaning the fruit trees… I looked at him and I felt how he put his soul into every movement. In front of the fruit tree he wasn’t absentminded, he wasn’t thinking at anything else but his work. But I knew that the tree revealed itself to him. It wasn’t a simple thing, one among a thousands things alike, as it reveals to us, to common people. The tree that he was cleaning revealed him the whole Universe. He saw it as a single entity with its roots, branches, leaves and parasites…” My love for art, in general, and especially for painting, materialized some years ago in my passion for photography. That’s why, I try to illustrate through my pictures pieces of a painting – the real world. A învăţat cum sa trăiască. Trăieşte el, ca om, ca fiinţă totală – şi nu se lasă trăit de ţesuturile lui, de glandele lui, de automatismele lui, ca noi toţi, ceştilalţi.. Îl observam cum îşi curăţa pomii în livadă..Îl observam şi îl simţeam cum era prezent în fiecare gest. În faţa pomului nu era distrat, nu se gândea la nimic altceva. Dar ghiceam ca pomul acela i se revela în totalitatea lui. Nu era un simplu obiect, unul printre altele o mie la fel ca el, asa cum ni se arată nouă, majorităţii oamenilor. Lui, pomul acela pe care îl curăţa, îi revela în acel moment, Universul întreg. The authenticity, the story and the emotion conveyed by a subject impress and impel me to take a picture. The Romanian village always gives me, with its simplicity, life stories. Every time, I transpose them through my pictures, I am grateful that they were shown to me. Rural photography is a sensitive land because a village reveals its soul to you only after you get to know it. Only then, you can capture the essence of the place and the emotion of the moment. A good photo can have a sound, smell, taste, touch. If I were to personify photography, I would compare it with a child who invents his toys all by himself and who, afterwards, enjoys them extremely, showing them to all people around him. Or, if there is nobody to see them, he finds an imaginary friend who would be his witness or accomplice. Photography is sharing!
Ceea ce mă impresionează şi mă îndeamnă să fac o fotografie sunt autenticul, povestea şi emoţia transmise. Satul românesc îmi oferă de fiecare dată, cu simplitatea caracteristică, poveşti de viaţă autentice. Şi de câte ori reuşesc să le surprind în imagini, mă simt recunoscătoare că mi s-au arătat. Fotografia rurală e un tărâm sensibil, pentru că un sat îşi arată sufletul numai după ce-l cunoşti. Abia atunci surprinzi şi atmosfera locului sau emoţia unui moment. O fotografie bună poate ajunge să aibă sunet, miros, gust, atingere. Dacă ar fi să personific fotografia, aş asemăna-o cu un copil care îşi inventează singur jucăriile şi care, apoi, se bucură nespus de ele, arătându-le tuturor celor din jur. Sau, dacă nu are cui să le arate, îşi găseşte măcar un personaj imaginar care să-i fie martor sau complice. Fotografia se cere întotdeauna împărtăşită.

I love beauty, I feed myself with great pictures, I discover special people and dreamlands. I always have my camera with me to avoid missing a good picture. When I see something special, there is a force that makes me pull out very quickly the camera from my rucksack and you can easily imagine what follows next. OF COURSE! I have a passion, a desire: PHOTOGRAPHY. I bought my camera 6 months ago and since then I enjoy every single moment taking pictures. Every picture makes me want more, know more and not miss a thing.
Sunt iubitoare de frumos, mă hrănesc cu imagini inedite, descopăr oameni deosebiţi şi locuri de poveste. Port aparatul tot timpul cu mine pentru a nu-mi scăpa nici o imagine bună. În momentul în care văd ceva deosebit o magie mă face să scot aparatul din rucsac foarte repede şi de acolo... vă închipuiţi şi voi. DA! Am o pasiune, o dorinţă, FOTOGRAFIA. De 6 luni am aparatul şi mă bucur de fiecare clipă folosindu-l. Cu fiecare fotografie făcută, vreau mai mult de la mine, vreau să ştiu mai multe şi nu vreau să pierd CLIPA.

Submissions You have an idea! If you have an idea about a documentary that you want to take photos about, or you have already worked on a topic, please send sample portfolio to office@cameraobscura. ro (to be sure that your photos are sent, try not to use Yahoo! Mail), and we will respond back with our comments. Submission Steps To submit your photos, please follow the following 5 steps: Step 1: Decide on a topic Step 2: Take high resolution photos of the theme (5 to 15 photos)
Step 3: Send a low resolution version of all your photos to: office@cameraobscura.ro (to be sure that your photos are sent, try not to use Yahoo! Mail) Step 4: You will receive an email reply requesting specific photos Step 5: Send the high resolution requested photos to: office@cameraobscura.ro (to be sure that your photos are sent, try not to use Yahoo! Mail). Also, please send a personal description which must contain strictly: -Your full name, age, job, equipment, email, site -Who are you? (maximum 500 characters text) When submitting photos, it is always a good idea to keep in mind how the final set of pictures will end up being presented in the
magazine. Resolution Requirements In general, the higher the resolution of the pictures, the better. The ideal resolution would be 25cm x 35cm at 72 dpi (around 1200 px). However, we do realize that not a lot of you have the equipment or the memory capacity to hold such large file sizes. Hence, please make sure that you set your camera settings to the maximum resolution you could afford. Low resolution files might become pixelized when enlarged. The preferred picture file format is JPEG (.jpg). All the photos will have your copyright and can’t be used in other purposes.
