WHY? Psychological thriller about Lizzie Borden, who stood accused of the infamous 1892 axe murder of her family in Massachusetts

NT Live: The Tragedy of King Richard the Second Tues 15 Jan 7pm Run time tbc, £15 Broadcast live from the Almeida Theatre in London. King Richard II (Simon Russell Beale) is irresponsible, foolish and vain. His weak leadership sends his kingdom into disarray. Seeing no other option but to seize power, the ambitious Bolingbroke challenges the throne and the king’s divine right to rule.

An uncontrolled forest fire rages close to the Canadian border. When Jerry loses his job, he decides to join the cause of fighting the fire. Suddenly forced into the role of an adult, Joe witnesses his mother’s struggle as she tries to keep her head above water.

ROH Live: The Queen of Spades Tues 22 Jan 6.45pm 210 mins, £15 Live screening from The Royal Opera House. Tchaikovsky’s intense opera of obsession and the supernatural, based on a short story by Pushkin. Gherman is caught between the woman he loves and a destructive fixation. An engrossing portrayal of a tortured creative artist and a gripping piece of gothic storytelling.

WHY? A new production that has already garnered five-star reviews in Amsterdam

Alfredo falls in love in with the courtesan Violetta in glamorous Paris society. Underneath the surface run darker undercurrents, leading to a tragic ending.

WHY? Lavish period sets and costumes enhance the reality of a moving story based on true life
