David (Tim Roth) is a nurse who works with terminally ill patients. He develops strong relationships with each person he cares for. Outside of his work, David is struggling with an ongoing burden of guilt and remorse. As the weight becomes unbearable, he must face his past in order to heal.

Rock legend Marianne Lane (Tilda Swinton) is recuperating on a Sicilian island with her partner. She is rocked by the unexpected arrival of her old flame Harry (Ralph Fiennes) and Penelope, who he says is his daughter. He brings with him a blast of nostalgia from which there can be no rescue.
