The King Lear

The Matthew Read Trio

Lady Maisery

Thur 15 Mar 8pm

Sat 17 Mar 8pm

Three like-minded approaches for music making create an exciting new performance every time The Matthew Read Trio play. The band are Benedict Wood (guitar), Arthur Newell (drums) and Matthew Read (double bass). Drawing influence from the bands of Pat Metheny, John Scofield and Paul Motian, MRT brings a fresh edge to the world of the modern jazz guitar trio.

Vocal trio Hazel Askew, Hannah James and Rowan Rheingans harness and celebrate their united voice. They have a unique approach to harmony singing with intelligent arrangements of both traditional repertoire and original compositions. The trio are also one of the foremost English proponents of mouth music, or ‘diddling’ - singing without words.

WHY? Performing melody-driven original compositions from their much anticipated second album

WHY? ‘Create some of the most exquisite, thrilling vocal harmony work in the English folk scene’ ★★★★ The Guardian

In 1170, Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, was assassinated. Why? A misunderstanding by order of the King? We don’t know. But this modern play offers an insight. The assassins retreated to Knaresborough Castle and spent a year there under siege. A baudy, irreverent comedy of the blackest variety. Adult scenes and strong language. WHY?
