PASTELS AND WOOD AT NORTHMODERN IN COPENHAGEN Summer is over and the season for trade shows, fairs and exhibitions are starting. This year, we’re starting out by visiting Northmodern in Copenhagen for the first time. Text & photo: Maria Richardsson

Visiting a new trade show for the first time can be a bit overwhelming. It is a new location with a lot of new brands, so you really don’t know what to expect. But the experience was a very positive one! The overall impression of the exhibiting companies at Northmodern in Copenhagen is that they

are all very aligned, maybe even more so than at Formex. There were a lot of wood, leather, grey tones and dirty pastels everywhere I looked. The Danes are well-known for their fabulous design, and it became clear when visiting Northmodern that this is still very true!

The location in Bella Center is spacious and offers a lot of daylight, which really helps in spending a full day in the same premises. The different exhibition areas were very varied in terms of layout, which also made it more dynamic, flexible and interesting to walk around in the different areas.

Jollygoodfellow had a bunch of new products to show. They have a new series of posters with instruments, the popular V채rldsm채starcykeln poster is available in new colours, and the urbnCalendar is now available in cork.

Trend

GOING BACK TO THE ROOTS At both Northmodern and Formex, the traditional craftsmanship was given a strong focus. In both trade shows, special areas were dedicated to the crafts, and craftsmen (and women) was invited to work and showcase their talent live. This really emphasise the ongoing trend of natural material, excellent craftsmanship and DIY. Text & photo: Maria Richardsson

Using materials like wood, paper, fabrics and mixing modern Scandinavian design with traditional techniques can really create beautiful objects that brings soul and warmth to any home. By buying more of these kind of products, not only do get sustainable and longlasting products with

great quality, you also support local craftsmen and help them keep the old traditions alive. I am so happy to see that this trend continues to grow strong. There are so much passion and skills in these designers and makers, and they deserve the attention and appreciation.

TRENDSPOTTING

AT FORMEX IN STOCKHOLM Formex is the big design- and trendfair taking place twice a year in Stockholm, Sweden. This is the start of the season, and the atmosphere is buzzing with anticipation and new energy. Text & photo: Maria Richardsson

This trade show is one of the most important in this region, and as many as 24 of our designers (!) are exhibiting here, to get more attention from press and retailer. I will bring

you along to meet them later on, but I want to start out by sharing my impressions of the inspirational exhibitions created by Formex.

25

Lets start in the Trend Restaurant, since it displayed the different themes and trends in a better way. The theme for this years show is Nordic Essence, putting a focus on the essentials in life, and the exhibition in the restaurant is designed by Formexveteran stylist Jan Rundgren.

26

The theme Nordic Essence is a lot about going back to basics and going back to nature. The materials in focus are wood, leather and metals like brass and copper, and we are seeing a lot of takes on wooden baskets. The colours are very soft, in grey and dirty pastels, together with a lot of dark shades of blue. During the press breakfast, a lot of the presenters talked about downscaling as an overall trend in our society. Focus on the essentials, and on better quality items. Gardening, and especially growing your own eatables continue to be very important.

27

28

The entrance exhibition was created by the architecture firm Codesign. It is inspired by the Nordic craft traditions, lifestyles and architecture, and is called The House Cat. “Good architecture is about inclusion, and this is something we focus on in all of our projects, and The House Cat in particular. Our work here creates a new relationship between craftsmanship, art and exhibition, says Sanna Gebeyehu, Concept developer at Codesign.

29

FORMEX Every Formex, a jury selects 10 products to be nominated for the Formex Formidable Award. It always a great mix of different kind of products and products from established brands as well as new designers.

During the press breakfast, the nominees was revealed and we were so proud to learn that two of our designers are nominated! The extremely talented Nadja Wedin got nominated for her new collection Wagtails, including the velvet cushion covers in green and blue.

30

Newcomer Saga Melina also got nominated for the beautiful necklace Cross my heart (above). Congratulations to both of you! We will keep our fingers crossed when the winner is announced at Formex in January!
