ART
COMMUNITY
OUR MISSION The Nordic Heritage Museum shares Nordic culture with people of all ages and backgrounds by exhibiting art and objects, preserving collections, providing educational and cultural experiences, and serving as a community gathering place.
From the President Irma Goertzen
It’s almost impossible to believe that another year has passed, and we are in a new year with expectations higher than ever. Yes, we will start digging a hole in the ground at our new site on Market Street in Ballard that will “tell the world” that a new Nordic Museum is about to begin construction. Many of you have participated in a variety of ways to make this possible. Thank you for your generous support through your gifts of money and volunteer time.
Irma Goertzen, Board President
The Museum has also provided wonderful opportunities for our Members and visitors to view many fine exhibitions and participate in learning opportunities through a variety of classes here at the Museum. Our sense of community welcomes regular visitors and newcomers alike to the Museum each year and we are proud to say we are the only museum in North America that represents all five Nordic countries.
2
All of these occasions are created through the hard work of our staff, and many hours of volunteer time from our volunteer ranks. We are very fortunate to have such a highly qualified staff willing to use their creativity and extra time to make this all happen. I want to personally thank them and all the wonderful volunteers for their involvement in these activities. The Nordic Heritage Museum is a critically important cultural organization in our local and global community. It is only through your continued support that we thrive in the future. Because of your support this past year, the dream of a new museum has become a reality, and we treasure your participation. To those of you who will make a gift this year, please let me express my gratitude in advance, and I look forward to thanking you personally!
NORDIC HERITAGE MUSEUM 2015 Annual Report
From the Treasurer Hans Aarhus
The Museum continued to maintain a robust position in 2015, while also advancing our work toward a new state-of-the art facility on Market Street. The Museum grew its operational revenue from $1.713M in 2014 to $2.140M in 2015, and actual net income outperformed projections by an impressive $456K. Earned revenue from program fees, facility and rental income, Museum Store sales, admissions, interest, and membership fees totaled $768K, and contributed revenue from donations, grants, and special events totaled $1.372M. Donations significantly outperformed budget due to a generous bequest from the Estate of Jane Isakson Lea. The Capital Campaign position made a material leap forward this year with the receipt of a number of substantial gifts and commitments from Brevik Family Trust, John and Berit Sjong, Allan and Inger Osberg, Floyd Jones, Svanhild Swasand Castner and Russell Castner, Karen L. Koon, Pirkko and Brad Borland, Arlene Sundquist Empie, Leif Eie, Tom and Drexie Malone, and Valinda and Lyle Morse. We also received our first significant overseas funding—a $4M grant out of Denmark from the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation. The Nordic Council of Ministers also provided funds to support the development of the core exhibition for the new facility. Capital Campaign income for 2015, generated and realized in our financials, totaled over $8.16M—an outstanding year for the Museum. The hard work and fiscal diligence of our staff and volunteers continues to yield positive,

From the CEO Eric Nelson
Thanks to our Members, board, volunteers, staff, and patrons, it was a landmark year for the Nordic Heritage Museum. Continuing to present unique exhibitions, programming, and events to our community is gratifying especially knowing that we experienced record-breaking attendance numbers. Our outreach continues to expand far beyond our wonderful neighborhood in Ballard, and we are poised to break ground this year on our new home on Market Street.
Eric Nelson, CEO
2015’s diverse schedule of exhibitions included Imaging the Arctic, confronting issues at the forefront of public discourse in the Nordic countries. The exhibition’s preview was combined with a visit by Norwegian Ambassador to the US, Wegger Christian Strommen. Finland: Designed Environments showcased a collection of Finnish design of the last fifteen years, and we were honored to be joined by Mrs. Ritva Koukku-Ronde, then Finnish Ambassador to the United States, for the opening. Keep Clam and Carry On: The Ivar Haglund Story highlighted the colorful entrepreneur’s life with a multisensory collection of artifacts and memorabilia. Skål! Scandinavian Spirits shared the fascinating history of drinking traditions dating back to the Viking era, with a special introduction by visiting curator, Tova Brandt. The 6th Annual Nordic Lights Film Festival at Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) featured cutting-edge films from the Nordic countries and continued to attract record audience numbers. Our Mostly Nordic Concert Series celebrated its 20th anniversary under Artistic Director, Lisa Bergman. In partnership with the Seattle Symphony, we celebrated the 150th birthday of Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, with the Luminous Landscapes: The Sibelius Symphonies festival. At the 30th Annual Northern

Lights Auktion, the Museum hosted a sold-out event. New and increased sponsorship supported the Auktion and strengthened the Museum’s relationships with local and national businesses. Our annual Viking Days and Yulefest festivals continued to attract thousands of visitors. We made great progress on the development of the core exhibition for the new museum. A special thank you goes to the Nordic Council of Ministers for their generous support, making it possible to establish a Content Advisory Forum, including museum professionals and academics from the Nordic region and the US. The Museum hosted symposia in Copenhagen and Seattle, receiving valuable feedback on the core museum storyline and ideas for future partnerships. The Museum received tremendous financial support from our Members and patrons, and also benefited from the generosity of a number of funders, partner organizations, and foundations. Special thanks to 4Culture, The A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation, Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation, ArtsFund, Joshua Green Foundation, Scan | Design Foundation by Inger and Jens Bruun, City of Seattle, and the State of Washington. The significant support provided through these partners made 2015 a truly exceptional year. We will continue to bring our audiences dynamic and entertaining programs and exhibitions for 2016, and look forward to keeping you updated with progress reports on our new home in the coming year.

exhibitions Exhibitions in 2015
Visiting Exhibitions & Accompanying Programs Visiting and original exhibitions in 2015 furthered the Museum’s mission to share the richness and diversity of Nordic and NordicAmerican art, history, and culture. Finland: Designed Environments (03/12/2015– 07/26/2015) looked at the explosion of creativity in Finnish design over the last 15 years. Examples of furnishings, fashion, and craft, as well as architecture and urbanism, illustrated how nearly every aspect of Finnish life incorporates thoughtful design—from city streets and summer homes to fashion and food—and is marked by sensitivity to form and material. The exhibition was organized by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and is the first significant U.S. museum presentation since the 1990s to examine contemporary Finnish design. Diana Velasco: Dual Exposures (04/03/2015– 06/21/2015) was an exhibition of photography by Danish-Spanish artist Diana Velasco, organized by the Danish Immigration Museum, Farum,
Denmark. Featured was Velasco’s “Portraits” series, highlighting subjects who have both a Danish and non-Danish parent; each was presented twice in the photograph to illustrate the two cultural and national backgrounds they carry. The exhibition was particularly timely, as a new Danish Nationality Act came into force in 2015, allowing citizens to retain their Danish citizenship while also holding citizenship in another country. Warner Sallman: The Master Painter (04/11/2015–04/21/2015) featured paintings and prints by Warner Sallman (1892–1968), son of Finnish and Swedish immigrants, and cited by The New York Times as one of the most recognized artists of the 20th century. Sallman’s most popular and iconic image, the Head of Christ, has been reproduced over one billion times. Keep Clam and Carry On: The Ivar Haglund Story (08/14/2015–11/18/2015), produced by Nordic Heritage Museum, told the story of seafood magnate and global adventurer Ivar Haglund’s extraordinary life and accomplishments.
5
Hundreds of photographs, vintage television footage and radio spots, original artifacts, interactive experiences—and a 10-foot tall model of the Smith Tower—came together to create an exhibition which highlighted his Scandinavian heritage, entrepreneurship, and importance in Seattle’s history. Education on the Frontier (09/26/2015– 11/10/2015) was produced by the Scandinavian Cultural Center at PLU in recognition of PLU’s 125th anniversary. Pacific Lutheran University was founded by Norwegian Lutheran ministers in 1890, the first such institution west of the Rockies. Martin Luther taught the importance of establishing schools, and Scandinavians brought this value with them. This exhibition chronicled
6
how Lutheran educational ideals have been pushed to encompass a greater and greater segment of society, both at Pacific Lutheran University and throughout the world. Skål! Scandinavian Spirits (12/11/2015– 02/28/2016), explored the cultural history of beer and aquavit in Scandinavia, following those drinking traditions to Scandinavian-American communities, and answering questions such as “What IS aquavit, anyway?” and “How do you ‘skål’ correctly?” This exhibition was organized by the Museum of Danish America, Elk Horn, Iowa, and was developed in partnership with Nordic Heritage Museum, along with other Scandinavian-American museums.

programs Programs in 2015
Children’s and Youth Programs In 2015, more than 3,300 children participated in educational programming offered by the Museum. The school tour program, leading groups through The Dream of America exhibit, as well as self-guided school groups, brought 1,064 children to the Museum on 51 tours. The four outreach trunks (Immigrants, Nordic Folk Art, Trolls/Norse Gods, and Vikings) were used by over 900 children throughout greater Seattle. Special programs for children and families served another 1,211 children. Programs included Viking Days and Yulefest, where children’s craft projects, visits with Santa, and Nordic folk music and dancing were available. The LEGO workshop was well-attended, as were the annual Pippi Longstocking pancake breakfast, Syttende Mai, the Museum’s summer camp program, and the popular Moomin Mania. Workshops were given, directly related to temporary exhibitions. Another 430 people were exposed to the Museum at the Bellevue Arts Museum Family Day/ Cultures of the World. Nordic Stories, our monthly preschool reading program in its ninth year, continued to be a great success, with an attendance of 180 children and 126 adults. The local children’s Scandinavian dance and music group Barneleikarringen continued to practice at the Museum in 2015 and performed at several Museum events.
Public Programs Nordic Heritage Museum offered a wide array of adult education programs in 2015, with many events at capacity. A reading of the original Norwegian play The Epiphany attracted 260 attendees to the Museum auditorium. The soldout annual Raoul Wallenberg dinner featured a number of important delegates, including Seattle Mayor Ed Murray. Lectures and screenings in conjunction with the Imaging the Arctic exhibition brought 342 guests to learn about climate change in the Nordic regions.
Nordic Nights, a new program of expanded evening hours on our monthly, free first Thursdays, increased Museum attendance with a series of lectures, film screenings, musical performances, and children’s programming. The Nordic Nights closing party for the Museum–produced exhibition, Keep Clam and Carry On: The Ivar Haglund Story drew a crowd of almost 200. In 2015, public programs and tours saw an increase of 35% compared to 2014. Tours and lectures with visiting artists were among the successful programs accompanying exhibitions. The Imaging the Arctic exhibit provided several well attended programs, among them a lecture with Coryell-Martin and Dr. Laidre, which drew record crowds and two documentaries on the topic of the Arctic. The film Last Days of the Arctic was presented in partnership with the Icelandic Club of Greater Seattle. Later in the year the Museum partnered once again with the ICoGS, on the Icelandic/Japanese film Cold Fever. Also sponsoring that event was the Japanese Cultural Community Center of Washington. Finland: Designed Environments generated successful tours and programs. Pecha Kucha: Living Loving Nordic Design entertained over 100 guests, using their trademark 20 slides x 20 second–format, the event brought together a wide array of presenters who examined Nordic design. Keep Clam and Carry on: The Ivar Haglund Story was accompanied by a wellattended lecture featuring historian Paul Dorpat and Ivar’s president, Bob Donegan. Other lectures included a talk by Desiree Ohrbeck, covering recent terrorist events in Denmark, a discussion about Swedish artist Gunnar Widforss, and a presentation covering the Norwegian influence on ski jumping in the Northwest. In January, the Museum, in partnership with international film institutes and the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF), presented the sixth annual Nordic Lights Film Festival
7
featuring films from all five Nordic countries. The director and a cast member of The Optimists, participated in a Q&A after the screening. Eight hundred and fifty-two people attended the fourday festival, an all-time high. Soup & Cinema continues to grow. The program, which includes a soup lunch and a Nordic movie at lunchtime, drew a record 500 people for the year. In addition to the popular Mostly Nordic Chamber Music Series, the Museum presented several concerts. The Icelandic band Arstidir captivated a sold-out house in July. The Novus Project, a consortium of musicians from the Seattle Symphony, Pacific Northwest Ballet orchestras, and local musicians, performed two concerts; the first, celebrating Finnish composer Jean Sibelius and the second, Danish composer Carl Nielsen, both in celebration of their 150th birthdays. In October, Mia and Mikael Marin performed their critically acclaimed fiddle music.
Craft School and Adult Education Programs Craft School had another highly successful year with over 700 attendees taking part in classes on woodcarving, rosemaling, cooking, embroidery, glass art, mead-making, beer tasting and drinking songs, and genealogical research. Nearly 50% of attendees to the programs were non-Members, making these classes and programs an appealing entrance point to potential new members.

Collections Nordic Heritage Museum Permanent Collection received a total of 162 new accessions from 145 donors in 2015. Some highlights include: a contemporary dress made from peat moss and wool by Finnish designer Marita Huurinainen; Music and Dance, a large stone carving with Runic design by artist Ove Gullin; a letter written by a young American boy to a pen pal in Norway, right before the Occupation in World War II; and a collection of 107 audiotapes which document activities of American musicians following in the footsteps of Swedish and Norwegian tradition-bearers. New acquisitions are used to help define the stories we present in the core permanent exhibition plan, as well as to help supplement our existing archives with new information that visitors can utilize in researching family histories or Nordic arts, history, and culture. The Nordic American Voices (NAV) Oral History Program continues to grow its archive of over 520 oral history interviews, with the addition of 100 new interviews added in 2015. In 2015, the museum received a “Heritage Collections Care” grant from 4Culture, to partner with the University of Washington Libraries Special Collections to digitize 87 films and reel-to-reel tapes from the Museum’s Special Collections Archives.

development Development in 2015
Steady attendance, revenue, and sponsorship supported our fundraising events, thanks to the efforts of volunteers and staff. Highlights included a profitable Yulefest, a well-attended Northern Lights Auktion and a busy Viking Days weekend. These events not only contributed to general operations, but also broadened the Museum’s audience locally and internationally. At the 30th Annual Northern Lights Auktion, the Museum was proud to host a sold-out event—the culmination of months of planning by the Auktion Committee and Museum staff. Highlights for the evening included a tribute to Allan and Inger Osberg and a special thanks
10
to Donna Pedersen & Linda Christenson who retired as Co-Chairs of the Auktion Committee. The 32nd Annual Viking Days featured the crowd-pleasing Viking Encampment, traditional music on three stages, the Swedish Pancake Breakfast, Viking Grill, Valhalla Beer Garden, Nordic Food Hearths, and the popular Run-Likea-Viking 5K. Attendees enjoyed demonstrations of handiwork presented by local merchants as well as local crafts persons. This year’s festival also presented an exciting opportunity to partner with sponsors such as UnionBank, Ballard Market, and Brooks Running.
NORDIC HERITAGE MUSEUM 2015 Annual Report
For the second year, Yulefest’s increasing attendance required the use of a large tent, providing extra space to host additional vendors, the Valhalla beer garden, and the Arctic Café. The festival’s Yuletide Gifts-to-Go Silent Auction con-
tinued to be a profitable part of Yulefest. Thanks to a new partnership with Viking River Cruises, we were able to double the amount of tickets sold in our annual raffle, and one happy ticket holder is looking forward to his cruise.

membership Membership
We thank all of our Members whose continued support has helped make Nordic Heritage Museum a strong and vibrant institution. In 2015, we had 283 new members join the Museum. To date, we have over 2,690 membership households. In 2015, we started a new program called Membership Green. This program gives Members the opportunity to receive their membership renewal notices via email rather than in the mail. Between October 1 and December 21, new Members were given the chance to win a $500 gift voucher on Icelandair. Also included in the chance to win were Members who upgraded their current membership or purchased a gift membership during that time frame. During this time we had 138 new Members, 58 upgrades, and 20 gift memberships.

Nordic Legacy Circle Members of the Nordic Legacy Circle have indicated to Nordic Heritage Museum that the Museum is part of their estate planning, and we thank them for their generous support. Making a planned gift to Nordic Heritage Museum ensures that the Museum will thrive well into the future. The Museum received generous bequests this year from Ruth Hoegh-Christensen, Nancy L. Thilberg, Gustav Raaum, and Jane Isakson Lea. Bequests are one way that a person can leave a significant gift that they may not be able to give during their lifetime. The Museum is so thankful that Ruth, Nancy, Gustav, and Jane included the Nordic Heritage Museum in their estate plans. If you are interested in becoming a part of the Nordic Legacy Circle there are a number of ways to include the Museum in your estate plans. Most commonly planned gifts are made through a bequest, which may include cash, securities, and real estate or retirement plan distributions and life insurance proceeds. A planned gift is one of the easiest gifts you can make. By making the Museum a beneficiary, you are leaving a legacy that will help further our mission. Any donation or planned gift you make to the Museum may remain anonymous. For more information about planned giving or your intent to include the Museum in your estate planning, call Jan Woldseth Colbrese at 206.789.5707 x39 or email janwc@nordicmuseum.org.

Jane Isakson Lea September 18, 1927–May 21, 2015 Jane Isakson Lea had an active interest in her heritage and the Scandinavian community. She received a bachelor’s degree in Scandinavian studies from the University of Washington. She was a charter member of Nordiska Folkdancers, a named “Swede of the Year” in 2008 by the Swedish Club, and a former board member and benefactor of Nordic Heritage Museum. Jane created The Jane Isakson Lea Foundation to support Swedish cultural activities in the region, Jane Isakson Lea, right, with Irma Goertzen with a mission to provide charitable contributions for scientific, literary, and educational purposes. Jane knew it was important that the causes she supported and championed in her lifetime would continue to thrive after she was gone. By leaving Nordic Heritage Museum a bequest, Jane was able to leave a legacy that will have a positive impact for many future generations.

volunteers Volunteers
For over 35 years volunteers have been the heart and soul of Nordic Heritage Museum, and they continue to play a vital role in the Museum’s success. Each year, over 400 volunteers support every area of the Museum: they provide meaningful experiences for visitors; keep our building safe and operational; provide invaluable support and leadership for our major fundraising events; capture and share the most compelling stories in our community; serve on advisory committees; and assist staff members in every department. Their contributions of time and exceptional talents ensure that the Museum continues to operate smoothly and efficiently, and their support and dedication enable us to fulfill our mission of sharing the Nordic spirit. Our Volunteer Program continues to grow steadily, as we expand our diverse and multigenerational volunteer corps. In 2015 we welcomed 35 new volunteers and engaged an additional 30 for our two major festivals. Over 15 interns made valuable contributions across
14
the institution. With new volunteer opportunities available in our Exhibitions Department this year, and our efforts to recruit volunteers from local colleges and universities, we grew our pool of talented younger volunteers. We continue to benefit greatly from the on-going commitment of our veteran volunteers and were delighted to celebrate two 90th birthdays this year. The following distinguished volunteers were honored with the Director’s Award at our spring Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and Awards Ceremony: Linda Christenson, Donna Pedersen, Julie Coulter, Pat Charlson, Markus Rook, and Harriet Kemp. Bill Weed was awarded Volunteer of the Year for his continuing leadership and dedication on the Thursday Crew and Volunteer Council. For more information about volunteering, contact Michael Ide, Volunteer Coordinator, at michaeli@nordicmuseum.org or 206.789.5707 x12.
