Honoring more than 40 years of partnership and heartfelt friendship, TRIDENT SEAFOODS SALUTES KAARE NESS. Kaare was a gentleman giant who taught us the true meaning of humility, love and service to his profession, his family and his Norwegian-American community. We will miss the strength of his helping hand, the tenderness of his heart, the honesty of his advice and the power of his personal trust and generosity. More than anything, we will miss his laugh, his smile and that twinkle in his eye. He knew us all so well‌

Tusen takk, good friend.

FROM the CO-CHAIRS of the NORTHERN LIGHTS AUKTION Welcome to the 31st Northern Lights Auktion! As we celebrate the evolution of our Museum and its mission, we also celebrate the continuity of our enduring Nordic bonds. The generations of brave families who immigrated to this wonderful country, the generation who founded our Museum with their commitment to keeping our heritage and history alive, and the coming generations who will inherit our efforts are linked in a museum experience rich in Nordic culture and history, past, present, and future. Your support helps make possible exhibits, festivals, language classes, films, featured artists and children’s programs, all of which celebrate Nordic culture and arts. The Museum staff works tirelessly to keep members connected to our mother countries while providing an opportunity for all to experience Nordic culture through new exhibits and precious pieces of our history. It has been a pleasure again to work with the Museum staff under the direction of Jan Woldseth Colbrese and Jenny Iverson, and with the many volunteers who give tirelessly of their time and talents to make our Auktion memorable. We are most grateful for this year’s generous donations from our community members and business supporters, and the continuing generosity from you, our Auktion guests, who make this gala event a success year after year. We wish you an enjoyable evening: time spent with old and new friends, a menu that celebrates Nordic and American cuisines, and the opportunity to purchase unique items and experiences. Once again, we are grateful for your steadfast support. Warmest regards from Co-Chairs Linda Christenson and Donna Pedersen, and the Auktion Committee.

WELCOME from CEO ERIC NELSON Welcome to Nordic Heritage Museum’s 31st Annual Northern Lights Auktion! We are excited to bring you our annual fundraising evening of live and silent lots as we celebrate all of our generous donors and loyal friends. Thanks to you for your continued support of the programming and cutting-edge events the Museum offers. Tonight we are honored to spotlight the legacy of two members whose support and involvement have forever shaped the Museum’s future: Kaare and Sigrunn Ness. They embrace the mission of the Museum, empowering it with their gift of community and sense of dedication. Tonight’s gala is especially exciting because of the amazing support our capital campaign has received over the last several years. From individuals such as Kaare and Sigrunn, local and international foundations, City of Seattle, King County, and the State of Washington—truly significant gifts have been received to bring us closer than ever to the start of construction of our new facility on Market Street. We will break ground on the new building this summer with a projected opening date of early 2018. We have made much progress since we gathered for this event last year. While we are inspired by the support for our capital campaign, this is a challenging time. As we work to complete the fundraising for our future home, we must maintain funding for the current museum and continue to provide the high-quality programs and exhibitions that you, our members, and the larger community expect. Tonight’s auction provides critical financial support to the coming year of programs, concerts, children’s activities, and community events at Nordic Heritage Museum. I want to extend deep gratitude to our Auktion Committee, led by Donna and Linda, to the Ness family, and to all of you: our continued supporters, friends, and guests here with us tonight. It’s because of your efforts and ongoing commitment to the Museum that we are able to push forward. Thank you for joining us at this evening’s event and for supporting the Museum. We hope you enjoy yourselves, raise those paddles, and have fun celebrating with us. Happy bidding!

KAARE and SIGRUNN NESS This year, Nordic Heritage Museum pays tribute to Kaare and Sigrunn Ness for their enduring support of the Museum. Both born in Norway, Kaare and Sigrunn were married for sixty-six years before Kaare’s passing in January. For years, they embraced the mission of the Museum, empowering it with their gift of community and sense of dedication. Raised on the island of Karmoy off the Norwegian coast, Kaare’s skill as a fisherman—and their personal integrity—transformed a modest dream of one day owning a small fishing boat into co-founding one of the largest seafood companies in the United States. From Norway, Sigrunn and Kaare eventually found their way to the East Coast of the United States, and then west to the Aleutian Island chain. It was here that bravery, strong spirit, and innovative fishing skills allowed Kaare to become a pioneer of modern North Pacific fisheries. Together with Chuck Bundrant, they co-founded North America’s largest vertically integrated seafood harvesting and processing company, Trident Seafoods. Kaare and Sigrunn remained loyal to their heritage and constantly demonstrated this to their community through acts of personal generosity, respect, and admiration. In 2012, Kaare was knighted by King Harald of Norway, receiving the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit for fostering Norwegian-American relations and spearheading the creation of a memorial honoring fishermen from Karmoy who had been lost at sea. During their time together they also built a loving family including son, Arne Ness, daughter, Cindy Ness Mannes, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The Ness family exemplifies a strong tradition of support for the Museum. Son-in-law Leif Mannes served two terms on the Nordic Heritage Museum Board of Trustees, and just this month we welcomed next generation, Kurt Ness, Kaare and Sigrunn’s grandson, to the Board. Kaare’s sister, Betty Nes-Wabey is a valuable member of our Northern Light’s Auktion committee and has worked tirelessly on this gala in each of the past two years. Nordic Heritage Museum is deeply honored to have played a part in the life of Kaare and Sigrunn Ness and will forever be grateful for their support and dedication. The Ness family will forever be an important part of the Museum’s lasting legacy. Tusen Takk, Kaare and Sigrunn!

HOW the AUCTION WORKS ExpressPay™ All guests must register for ExpressPay™ service at Registration. By registering for this service, you can avoid standing in line to pay for your purchases at the end of the night. Sign up for ExpressPay™ by providing the registration assistant with a VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover credit cards, or a signed check made out to Nordic Heritage Museum, which will be run through the payment system and kept on file for the evening. At the close of the auction, your purchases will be totaled and charged as directed. You may proceed directly to the Secure Release area to collect your purchases without stopping at the payment checkout lines. Arrangements may be made for a later pick-up date at the Nordic Heritage Museum. All items must be picked up no later than 30 days following the auction. Each item offered in the silent auction will have a bid sheet placed near it. Make a bid by writing your bidder number on the form opposite the amount you wish to bid. Please press hard— you are making three copies. You do not have to take the next available amount on the form but may skip ahead to a higher bid price. The next bidder must bid higher than you or bid the guaranteed price to be successful.

11

Closing You may bid on any item in any silent auction section until the section is closed. Announcements will be made prior to each closing. At the posted closing time, a silent auction closer will circle the winning bid on each form and collect the forms.

Golden Raffle During the Silent Auction, guests will be invited to participate in the Golden Raffle. Only 150 tickets will be sold at $100 each. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card up high with the number facing the auctioneer. Either the auctioneer or a bid spotter can accept your bid. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is merely a fractional advance over the previous bid. The highest bid acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be deemed a legal contract with that bidder to purchase the item. The auctioneer reserves the right to settle any and all disputes, complaints, misunderstandings, errors, and sales at his discretion.

12

Fund-A-Need

Honoring the Kaare & Sigrunn Ness Legacy During the live auction, the auctioneer will announce the opportunity to support Fund-A-Need. These gifts support the Museum’s annual efforts. The auctioneer will invite you to hold up your Bid Card to pledge $100, $250, $500, $1,000, $2,500, $5,000, or $10,000 toward this cause. Hold your card in the air until the auctioneer reads your bidder number aloud. You will pay your pledge along with your auction purchases. You may hold up your auction bid card multiple times to pledge more than one amount. During the final round at the $100 pledge level you may choose to write a dollar amount on the back of the Fund-A-Need sheet and sign your name. At this time you can pledge as much or as little as you feel comfortable giving. We are hoping for 100% participation during Fund-A-Need this year. Once you’ve written an amount and signed your name auction volunteers will come to each table and collect the final pledges.
