CELEBRATING DANISH ROOTS & AMERICAN DREAMS
DANISHMUSEUM.ORG | ELK HORN, IOWA
FROM the CO-CHAIRS of the NORTHERN LIGHTS AUKTION Welcome to the 32nd Northern Lights Auktion! This is truly a time to celebrate our Nordic Museum. We are watching our dream of a new facility come to fruition and expect to take occupancy the end of this year. We celebrate our Nordic roots and the courageous immigrants who came to this land; we give thanks for the rich heritage they brought with them and shared with us. We give thanks for the advancement and vision of today’s Nordic peoples and for their willingness to share such dreams and exhibitions with us. How fortunate we are to have a place in which to explore not only our heritage but also what that history will bring to the future of our community. We give thanks for your generous support. The funds that we raise this evening help make possible the multitude of programs the Museum offers: exhibits, festivals, language classes, films, concerts, featured artists and children’s programs. Each of these celebrate Nordic culture and arts. Without your support and participation these things would not be possible. We are most fortunate to have an excellent staff that gives tirelessly to our vision, and are especially grateful to Jenny Iverson and Jan Woldseth Colbrese for the work they have done to make this evening possible. We wish you an enjoyable evening: a time to meet with friends, a time to seek out new treasures and experiences, and a menu that offers the best of both Nordic and American cuisines. We are grateful for your steadfast support and hope for your continued generosity. Gratefully,
Valinda Peterson Morse Nordic Heritage Museum Trustee and Co-Chair of the 2017 Northern Lights Auktion

WELCOME from CEO ERIC NELSON Welcome to Nordic Heritage Museum’s 32nd Annual Northern Lights Auktion! It’s an honor to welcome you to our most important fundraising event of the year. Tonight we celebrate you, the Museum’s generous donors, friends, and volunteers. Because of your dedication, philanthropy, and support we are able to carry out our mission of sharing the Nordic spirit. The Museum is pleased to recognize Erik Breivik and John Sjong—two innovative fishing industry entrepreneurs and longtime friends of the Museum. Their stories and accomplishments are a proud reminder of the Nordic countries’ deep roots in Seattle’s maritime heritage. The construction of our New Nordic Museum is on track to be finished by year end. It’s hard to imagine that by this time next year, the state-of-the-art Museum we’ve dreamed of for 15 years will be open to the public. With over 40 million dollars raised, we are grateful to have your support in creating our new home. There are still funds to raise, and it’s crucial that we keep up the momentum and finish on a strong note. We are counting on you, our dedicated advocates, as we enter the final stages of the Museum’s Capital Campaign. Your contributions tonight will ensure the success of this ambitious and historic project. Your generosity will also allow the Museum to continue to produce the high-quality programs and exhibitions our community deserves. I want to extend our deep gratitude to the Auktion Committee, co-chaired by board members Kurt Ness and Valinda Morse, and you—the supporters, friends, and guests joining us tonight. Your generous spirit and commitment to the Museum truly keep us moving forward. Thank you for joining us and for your support of the Museum. We hope you have a wonderful evening, and leave not only with a great auction item (or several!), but also a sense of how valuable you are to the Museum’s continued growth and success. Skål, and remember to bid early, bid often and know your support is deeply appreciated.

ERIK BREIVIK and JOHN SJONG
N
orwegian born John Sjong immigrated to the United States in 1960. In 1965, after a stint in the US Army and employment in various industries, John found his way to fishing—taking on an old wooden salmon tender which he and the rest of the four-person crew retrofitted for crabbing. From these humble beginnings, John continued on to become one of the first fishermen in Washington State to see merit in Alaskan pollock, a fish considered unworthy of fine cuisine in America during the 1970s. Eventually he owned the first of the US-flagged fishing boats to commercially fish pollock, the Arctic Trawler, and began pollock fishing in the Alaskan and Bering strait regions in the late 70s. Together with partners, often with ties to Norway, John’s innovation helped usher in an era of fishing which would become a billion-dollar industry. Born in Norway, Erik Breivik first learned the fishing trade in the Atlantic, working aboard his family’s fishing vessel, the F/T Atlantic. In 1982, he was recruited to America by John Sjong to develop the frozen-at-sea processing industry in Alaska, as he had done aboard his family’s vessel in Norway. He joined Sjong and other fishermen in the Pacific, harvesting Alaskan pollock for the booming commercial fishing Industry. Breivik became a pioneer in developing the high-quality standards of frozen-at-sea blocks for use in restaurant and consumer markets around the world. As a founder of the Seattlebased Glacier Fish Company, Breivik’s legacy is still going strong, with the company continuing to expand and diversify today. Erik and John have both shown unparalleled support for the New Nordic Museum. They have worked to support local community and retain pride in Nordic Spirit and culture. We are thrilled tonight that among family, friends, and guests, we can spotlight and honor their contributions to our mission. Please take a moment tonight and raise a glass to two incredibly generous and philanthropic Nordics! Tusen Takk, John and Erik!

HOW the AUCTION WORKS ExpressPay™ All guests must register for ExpressPay™ service online or at Registration. By registering for this service, you can avoid standing in line to pay for your purchases at the end of the night. Sign up for ExpressPay™ by providing the registration assistant with a VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover credit cards, or a signed check made out to Nordic Heritage Museum, which will be run through the payment system and kept on file for the evening. At the close of the auction, your purchases will be totaled and charged as directed. You may proceed directly to the Checkout area to collect your purchases without stopping at the payment checkout lines. Arrangements may be made for a later pick-up date at Nordic Heritage Museum. All items must be picked up no later than 30 days following the auction. In the event you did not purchase any items, your charge slip or check will be returned ‘VOID.’ For questions please contact Deputy Director of Operations, Sandra Nestorovic at 206.789.5707 x36.
Silent Auction All silent auction sections open at 5pm. The sections close at staggered times throughout the evening. Please see page 7 for silent auction closing times. Each item offered in the silent auction will have a bid sheet placed near it. Place a bid by writing your bidder number on the form opposite the amount you wish to bid. Please press hard—you are making three copies. You do not have to take the next available amount on the form but may skip ahead to a higher bid price. The next bidder must bid higher than you or bid the guaranteed price to be successful.
Minimum Bid A minimum bid has been established for each silent auction item. You may not bid below this amount.
11
Guaranteed Bid Most silent auction items have a “Guaranteed Bid” price. To guarantee that you are the successful bidder, enter your bid number in the box next to the “Guaranteed Bid” price. This will instantly make you the successful bidder and owner of the auction lot.
Closing You may bid on any item in any silent auction section until the section is closed. Announcements will be made prior to each closing. At the posted closing time, a silent auction closer will circle the winning bid on each form and collect the forms.
Golden Raffle While registering or during the Silent Auction, guests will be invited to participate in the Golden Raffle. Only 150 tickets will be sold at $100 each. The winner of the raffle will be announced at the start of the Live Auction, and will be allowed to select one Live Auction item. Live Auction Guests may preview live auction items just outside the Grand Pacific Ballroom at the Seattle Marriott Waterfront from the time the doors open until the start of the live auction. The live auction will begin during dinner and continue without interruption until all items have been auctioned. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card up high with the number facing the auctioneer. Either the auctioneer or a bid spotter can accept your bid. The auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid that is merely a fractional advance over the previous bid. The highest bid acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be deemed a legal contract with that bidder to purchase the item. The auctioneer reserves the right to settle any and all disputes, complaints, misunderstandings, errors, and sales at his discretion.
12

Honoring the Contributions of Erik Breivik and John Sjong During the live auction, the auctioneer will announce the opportunity to support Fund-A-Need. Hold your card in the air until the auctioneer reads your bidder number aloud. You will pay your pledge along with your auction purchases. You may hold up your auction bid card multiple times to pledge more than one amount. We are hoping for 100% participation during Fund-A-Need this year.
