Dear IFMSA family, Together we have shared many unforgettable moments which became some of our favourite exchanging memories. Experience we have had with most amazing people from around the Globe inspired us to make a step forward. It is our great pleasure to invite you to join us at the 1st PRET in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is going to be held from 18th to 21th od May. If you are eager to experience international exchanges, learn more about IFMSA and SCORE/SCOPE or want to become a better exchange officer then this is a call for you. Does Sarajevo or Bosnia and Herzegovina ring a bell? If not then this just might be the opportunity for you to meet the breathtaking combination of the East and the West. Heart shaped land, located in southeast Europe will win you over with its hospitality and landscape. Thanks to the particular cultural mix which has existed for over 500 years, Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina is also known as European Jerusalem. Besides Jerusalem, Sarajevo is the only city in the world which has Chatolic church, Ortodocs church, mosque and synagogue placed in one square kilometer from one another. If history or nature is not your thing than join us at one of many night clubs or pubs because we are known for fun and joy we like to share with people around us. At the end we would like to let you know that our greatest joy is you! Thanks to the IFMSA family worldwide BoHeMSA has grown into the largest medical student association in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We dream bigger, we work harder and we want to share it all with you. See you this May in Sarajevo! Organising Comittee coordinator DŞan Horozić
WHO ARE WE? BoHeMSA started its work in Sarajevo at the Faculty of Medicine (University of Sarajevo). It was founded by medical students who were previously part of the YuMSEIC and who wanted to continue the great tradition of our Faculty. LC Sarajevo was founded in the same year as the BoHeMSA as the only local committee at that time. Because of the war in our country (1992 - 1995) that was a humble beginning for our students and a way to show persistence, strength and the will to work and gain knowledge and also to follow the global scene in the world of the healthcare system. BoHeMSA first showed its activity through various projects in the field of SCOPH and SCOME. It became a rightful part of the IFMSA in 1995. After the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina the number of members and activities in which BoHeMSA has participated started to grow. Shortly after that, our members started to go to IFMSA’s general assemblies. BoHeMSA slowly started to work on the exchange programme within our country. In the end, SCOPE was founded in 1998. From then until now our exchange programmes became a serious system which hosts more than 40 students a year from 10 different countries from all around the world. In 2006 started the process of including the Faculty of Medicine in Mostar as a rightful part of BoHeMSA. With the help of the dean at the Faculty of Medicine in Mostar and the Student Union the local committee in Mostar was formed. LC Mostar participates in all of our projects and activities on a local and national level. From its establishment, there was an idea of including the Faculty of Medicine in Tuzla as a rightful member of BoHeMSA. There were a few tries to form a local committee. After a few unsuccessful tries a new team has finally formed LC Tuzla in 2010. Today, we are proud to say that LC Tuzla has an important role in the development and representation of BoHeMSA.
WELCOME TO THE HEARTH SHAPED LAND Bosnia and Herzegovina is the heart shaped land that lies in the heart of southeast Europe. It is stated where eastern and western civilizations met. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a long name for a country that measures just over 50,000 km2. Bosnia covers the north and centre of the country with its name probably derived from ‘bosana’, an old Indo-European word meaning water, which Bosnia has no short of. Perhaps what is most important for the visitor to know today is that Bosnia and Herzegovina is a stunningly beautiful country with a vast array of landscapes, cultures, traditions and people. And as the old cliche goes ‘people make the place’ – and BiH prides itself on its hospitality and treating our guests as if they were family members. And family we take to heart.
SARAJEVO IS WHERE WE MEET! Sarajevo is a leading cultural centre in the Balkans, boasting a long and rich history of religious and cultural diversity. Adherents of Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism, and Judaism have coexisted in the city for centuries, earning Sarajevo the nickname “Jerusalem of Europe”. Sarajevo has always beacon of hope for peace and tolerance through multi-cultural integration. Sarajevo is one of those rare cities where, during a ten-minute walk, you can see places of worship for the world’s biggest monotheistic religions: Orthodox and Catholic churches, synagogues and mosques. All of these traditions have given Sarajevo a specific aroma and a particular cultural mix and multiculturality of the city is something we are really proud of.
Sarajevo was shaped by two big cultures, Ottoman and Austro-Hungerian. As a result whole city represents perfect compound of the best things from the East and West and perfect compound of Old and New. On our main street we have a marker named „Sarajevo – Meeting of cultures“. This is the very spot where Europian modern look is beeing replaced with old Eastern look.
