Conversations with Julie Lopez A closer look to the soul‌. Who I am I was born in Miami,FL USA and I have lived here my whole life. I come from and Irish, Argentinean, and Russian family. My family members are Jewish and Catholic. My grandmother was a painter and I credit her for giving me the gif of art. All of my formal education was attained here. My mom felt that it was important for the children to travel and learn a little bit about the country. So my summers where about stepping on the Appalachian Mountains, or driving down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, or seeing a Broadway show in New York.

Influences I am influenced by so many things. I love the simplistic yet powerful iconography found on cave paintings. I am also a fan of Egyptian hieroglyphics, African, and Aboriginal art. I like the paring of animals and human forms. Paul Klee, Robert Rauschenberg, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Jean Dubuffet are a few of my favorite artists. All of them where influence by primitive art to. There are so many graffiti / street artist that I like. I like Bansky because of his pranks. I think he just want to screw with shit in his one man army. He is incredibly brazen and very thoughtful. His assault on the New York Museums was great. The toys are treated like prints. They are hand painted and are in limited editions. My own imagery is breaking down and following this same transition.

Street Art Street art and Graffiti is fine art. It is equal to the art found in the museums. The stickers are art and the dolls are art. They are fine art. Graffiti and street art is a major influence to my work. I enjoy making an art that interacts with the public. Stencils, stickers, and tags are exhibited and given freely to the public. I see these painted scrawls with jagged lettering gnawing on walls and buildings. Tagging is not my favorite street art. However, I admire the spontaneous motion and flow of the painted lines. My own lines wander, they twist and become knotted thus, creating a variety of strange beings. These beings are anthropomorphic. I have collected a variety of patterns and shapes from animals and plants. This mental collection is used to fill the bodies of my figures whenever it is seen to fit. The filling looks like a language. It has its roots in Egyptian Hieroglyphics, cave paintings, and even crop circles.

Human beings have all been trying to find their meaning and their use to this world. Today, animals are found in our astrology, in our sports teams, and living along the side of us. Our cliches are heavily weighted with the personalities that we believe that different animals have. And so my feral figures contain these different personalities. Most of the time my figures wander between scary and silly like a stray dog that you find and you are not sure if it is mean or nice. In reality it is all very playful.
