hialeah gallery The Hialeah Campus Art Gallery is part of Miami Dade College Hialeah Campus’ Cultural Center, originally established with the support of a Knight Arts Challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation in 2015 . The center’s mission is to celebrate the arts and culture of the Hialeah and College community by providing students and visitors with opportunities to interact with innovative and unique multi-format exhibitions.

URBAN WALLS seeks to achieve an extraordinary example of street art traditionalists show preserving its original state, the exhibition is conceived with the idea avoiding the commercialization and domestication of the genre, a guerilla art show that meant to create a space for 2 local street artists sharing their work with each other without the pressure that comes with the commercialization of the work that is inherent in any sanctioned traditional gallery. There is a certain type of artist that the urban art movement has bred that enjoys the adventure as much as the art. Where else do you see a creative person risking themselves legally, financially, physically and creatively?”

The fact that more and more artists are turning to walls to express themselves rather than following the traditional art school to gallery route is why more street artists find themselves showing in galleries. In fact, the invention of graffiti has perhaps changed the face of the art world for good. Street art has achieved tremendous recognition and it’s wildly popular—and it’s not hard to understand why. While much of contemporary art is inside a white cube or art fairs tent, street art is street art is accessible, both literally and figuratively for all audiences.

Ivan Roque Untapped The idea behind the mural is about reaching into and discovering your untapped potential. Everyone that goes to college is on a journey to find themselves and create a destiny that is unique to whatever their desires may be. The squid is a powerful symbol as it is a wondrous creature that lurks deep within the abyss. A true ruler of it’s domain and yet it’s quite a mystery to all of us until we come face to face and marvel in its presence. The marigold is the flower of creativity and represents the ability that we have to fabricate any reality that we desire. Aside from the symbolism of the mural, I believe the squid along with the flowers and vines plays excellent with the space creating a realistic yet abstracted depiction as it wraps through in and out of the facades.

The Hialeah Cultural Center host year round art shows and is open to explore collaborations with local organizations, individuals and art colectives. We maintain a dynamic calendar of lectures, artist talks, exhibitions, festivals, and classes. Conceived from a need to infuse our students and community with opportunities to interact the Hialeah Cultural Center seeks to engage and immerse participants in a transformational experience that evolves from our rich cultural diversity and artist-led initiatives. We invite artists and the community to engage our vision by exploring our campus, our programs, and, of course, our extensive gallery space.

Born December of 1991, Ivan J. Roque is a visual artist from Miami, Florida. Raised in the Carol City, Roque identified with concepts of birth, death, renewal and social struggles. His influences range from the old masters to the new contemporaries; Caravaggio, Marc Rothko, Typoe and Gianni Versace. Among many of Roque achievements are: working with rapper DENZEL CURRY , collaborating with major brands like Samsung, Becks, Seagram’s Gin, Ultra Music Festival and showcasing alongside established artists such as The London Police, David Detuna, John “CRASH” Matos to mention few. Roque has traveled quite extensively for various exhibitions and murals including shows in New York City, Dubai, Seoul and mural festivals such as the Bushwick Collective Block Party and Pow Wow Worcester. Roque also has had three gallery solo shows and one museum solo show at the Coral Springs Museum of Art. He has a Bachelor’s of Art in Visual Arts from the Florida International University.

Aquarela Sabol (“Aquarela”) is a Miami based street artist, fine artist, installation artist, and overall visual creator of Slovak-American descent. She studied fine art at Columbia Chicago, however her growth as a hands on creator really began when she started painting street art and creating custom site-specific art installations of various mediums. Aquarela’s artistic painting style is a fusion of illustration, design, and portraiture. Her murals can be seen throughout Wynwood, rooftop lounges in SoBe, Tulum, LA, Houston, Salem, and 3 boroughs in New York. She has shown at the MOMA design store in NYC, as well as painted an onsite custom mural in the VIP lounge at the prestigious Sotheby’s Manhattan Auction House at their star studded Contemporary, Modern & Impressionist Auction for the BACCARAT HOTEL. She also works as a mixed media installation artist for clients such as Starwood, 1 Hotels (Central Park, Brooklyn, South Beach), Jeremy Hotel, American Eagle, Arie, etc. Wood, concrete, botanical / earth elements are all materials she sources and combines in these installations.

Every person is gifted with a creativity and vision that is uniquely theirs. Even if they don’t see themselves as a creative person, such as an artist or a dancer or writer, they DO have a beautiful prism of creativity inside of them. The rainbow is a symbol of illumination, creativity and diversity. Rainbows remind us of that our inner vision is capable of creating everyday magic in our lives if we choose to see, honor and express our vision. The clouds in the mural symbolize the beauty of impermanence in nature. Life is an ongoing journey, filled with many changes. It is our inner vision and unique perspective that allow all of us to see and create beauty along the way. The woman in this mural’s name is Sunshine. Sunshine wrapped in Rainbows
