NRHA - The Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority has relocated their main downtown office to the PNC Bank building on Main Street

BATCHELDER & COLLINS Celebrating their 150th Anniversary in 2018. The company has been in the current brick building since 1903 and remains a family-owned business

JANAF SHOPPING YARD the largest open-air center in the region was purchased by Wheeler REIT, Inc. for $85.65 million.

SENTARA LEIGH CAMPUS - Sentara will break ground in March 2018 on a 230,000 SF, $93.5 million construction project on the campus of Sentara Leigh Hospital to be completed in 2020. In addition, a 60,000 SF regional Musculoskeletal and Sports Medicine Center will open in fall 2019. Parking garage on site

EVMS - a new building is planned for the corner of Brambleton and Colley Avenue. Williams Hall will have an addition

CHKD - a new tower and glass offices facing Brambleton Avenue are under development and CHKD has also been renovating ED and NICU interiors and relocation of lab

MEDICAL CAMPUS - Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters and Eastern Virginia Medical School are all expanding and under development

BON SECOURS DEPAUL - the Bon Secours Health System and Mercy Health are in discussions of a possible merger. If the merger is successful, the system will include 43 hospitals in seven states

MEDICAL AND HEALTH SPECIALTIES PROGRAM - EVMS and Maury High School have partnered for more than 30 years on providing classes. In 2016, 33 Maury graduates earned $2.7 million in scholarships

SENTARA CANCER CENTER AT LEIGH HOSPITAL - will feature multidisciplinary expert care teams from Sentara Medical Group, Eastern Virginia Medical School, and Virginia Oncology Associates. A for-profit endeavor

CHKD INPATIENT MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY - in March 2018, CHKD filed a Certificate of Public Need application with the State Health Commissioner seeking approval to build a 60-bed facility for children and adolescents and is seeking partnerships

NORFOLK GENERAL - this $199 million expansion and modernization project started in 2016 and will be complete in 2020. It is remaining on the forefront of executing on Norfolk’s resilience strategy

EAST BEACH URGENT CARE - new concept serving East Beach surrounding area with general medical, occupational and industrial health care services

SLOVER - January 2018 was Slover’s third year anniversary. The 138,000 SF library serves as a centerpiece for community engagement and lifelong learning for all ages

ELIZABETH RIVER COMPACT - the Cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth are working together to strengthen inclusiveness in communications and planning including event marketing, policing, and transportation

OCEAN VIEW - several initiatives are underway within the community which include branding the Bayfront beaches, formation of a business association and new multifamily and mixed-use projects

NORFOLK CONSOLIDATED COURTHOUSE - the 100,000 SF phase 2 addition opened in February. It includes 6 courtrooms and the Law Library. It is served by The Tide

POLICE - Norfolk crime reports fell in 2017 by 15% the first half of the year as compared to 2016. Chief Boone has implemented new policing strategies with detective squads working closer together

BEACH REPLENISHMENT - the $34.5 million project was completed in summer 2017. It widened the seven miles of beach by 60 feet in East Ocean View, Ocean View and Willoughby Spit

ST. PAUL’S AREA - a comprehensive approach is in the works to support residents living in the area to achieve self-sufficiency by engaging the community and stakeholders with revitalization strategies

OHIO CREEK WATERSHED PROJECT - Norfolk was awarded a $112 million federal grant from the NDRC for this project. The team is exploring options to improve flooding and more in the Chesterfield Heights and Grandy Village neighborhoods to create the Coastal Community of The Future

100 Resilient Cities - the Rockefeller Foundation’s global initiative has led to Sydney’s adoption of our Vision 2100 process and Paris adopted the Retain Your Rain program. Both are programs based in Norfolk

MILITARY HIGHWAY - transition and redevelopment of Military Circle Mall and the Military Highway Urban Development Area. Focus to be on resiliency, density, and possible extension of light rail

MOVEMENT MORTGAGE - relocated and expanded to 824 Military adding 750 jobs in a state-of-the-art facility operations center. Opened in spring 2017

VETERAN CAREER CENTER - OppInc opened the center in 2017 to serve veterans, exiting military and spouses and is funded by the US Department of Labor. The team is made of former service members

NAVY PROUD 100 YEARS - successful partnership in 2017 has provided momentum for inclusion of the military in all City initiatives. OPTIMA HEALTH - second tenant at 824 Military, adding 200 new jobs in Norfolk in support of statewide contract awarded by the Commonwealth of Virginia

CFI - Virginia’s first Continuous Flowing Intersection in the Military Highway Corridor to be completed in 2018. It will combine the addition of new lanes, new signals and new traffic management technology to increase capacity and reduce congestion

HISTORIC FREEMASON - this quaint neighborhood of historic homes, European-style cafes and cobblestone streets is home to Omar’s Carriage House, celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2018

FIVE POINTS - a drive through art gallery showcased local artist work on buildings to bring a museum experience and exposure to the area. The Imagine Five Points event drew crowds in November


STRIDES

SIMON NORFOLK PREMIUM OUTLETS - opened in June 2017 with fanfare for the $75 million investment. The 332,000 SF center brought 800 jobs. Project will include a public park on Lake Wright

IKEA GROUNDBREAKING - the groundbreaking of IKEA in November 2017 started construction of the 331,000 SF store. The $75 million investment will be completed in 2019; 350 permanent jobs

BIKE LOOP PROJECT - has the goal of promoting safe, healthy and inclusive neighborhoods

GLOW RIDE II - May is Norfolk Bike Month. More than 550 riders gathered in the NEON for an organized ride facilitated by the Norfolk Bicycling and Pedestrian Trails Commission and Recreation and Parks and Open Space

NORTHAMPTON AREA - tourists and residents alike to be drawn to this premier shopping destination which is being transformed. Nestled near the airport, beaches, I-264 and more

ADP - expects to grow to 2,000 associates by this time next year. ADP Norfolk is one of five centers nationwide where a number of ADP’s business units are co-located

NORFOLK WORKS - the Norfolk Works office is located at 100 Bank Street and is open M-F from 9am-1pm. The office serves walk-ins and provides training as well as space for employer needs. Assistance is available for job search and resume writing as well

I-64/I-264 RAMP IMPROVEMENT PROJECT - this $158 million project is to be complete in 2019. It includes a new flyover ramp, a new C-D road, second exit lane and ramp widening

KAYAK - Nauticus provides an urban kayaking program in the summer which allows sunset and guided tours

BIKE SHARE - Zagster is setting up shop in Norfolk with bikes and stations. Future plans call for 150 bikes and more than 30 stations

FRONT STREET FLATS - the historic former Security Storage & Safe Deposit Co. Warehouse built in 1916 is being converted into 60 apartments. The building will include a rooftop patio and garden

THE EDGE AT 450 - the $30 million, 156-unit apartment complex opened in 2017. The Edge offers unique amenities, including an on-site dog wash, massage and yoga rooms

MUSEUM APARTMENTS - a 4 story, 48 unit multi-family building located in the NEON district is under development

BANKS AT BERKLEY - affordable housing complex opened in 2017 with 50 apartments. Two commercial spaces opening in 2018: the South Norfolk Medical Center and Dominion Physical Therapy Associates

HARBOR’S EDGE - the retirement community in Fort Norfolk is expanding to include 120 apartments in a new 22-story tower. Assets include onsite health services, assisted living apartments, memory care suites, skilled nursing and rehabilitation services

CHURCH STREET STATION STUDIOS - 80 mixed-income studio apartments for low-income and homeless clients in this permanent supportive housing community

BALLENTINE SCHOOL - a conversion of the former Ballentine School into 23 apartments is under development

PINEWELL STATION - a 145-unit apartment project nestled between the Ocean View Golf Course and Community Beach Park

161 GRANBY - a $3 million investment was made to move the building 12 inches. Construction is underway for 36 apartments and a storefront restaurant

FIRST COLONY FLATS APARTMENTS - a 50,000 SF building, former First Colony Coffee and Tea Company complex conversion into 51 apartments. $9.5 million investment

GHENT SELF STORAGE - a conversion of the building into 65 apartments on 24th Street

ICON - this towering 275 luxury apartment building with amenities galore is a conversion of a former regional bank headquarters. Demand remains strong for downtown residential growth

LINDE LOFTS - former Dagenhart building and Linde Air Products warehouse conversion into a 15-unit loft apartment complex on Colonial Avenue. $3.5 million investment

THE BRIGHTLEAF BUILDING - a 78,000 SF former British-American Tobacco Company warehouse conversion into 88 apartments completed in 2017. $15 million investment

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB - under development into a 40unit apartment building

NORFOLK AND WESTERN HISTORIC OVERLAY - creates new local historic zoning which will allow greater flexibility in adaptive reuse of industrial structures

ZONING - the City adopted a new zoning ordinance in 2018. It more strongly addresses flooding and other resilience challenges, tailors standards to our neighborhood character, and streamlines processes

NORFOLK PUBLIC SCHOOLS - Berkley Campostella Early Childhood Center begins their celebration as an “Apple Distinguished School” which is only one of five selected in the U.S. Every student receives an iPad to promote STEM education. Apple’s program is called “Developing Amazing Young Minds” through Apple ConnectED

BARRY ART MUSEUM AT ODU - this 24,000 SF museum features a translucent façade and will debut in Fall 2018. Philanthropists Carolyn K. and Richard F. Barry will have pieces from their private collection on display

VIRGINIA STAGE COMPANY - the company is celebrating 40 seasons of productions in the Wells Theatre in 2018. The Attucks Theatre will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2018

GOVERNOR’S SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS - celebrating 30 years of excellence in arts education in 2018. The school recently moved into its expanded space after a successful fundraising campaign of $6.2 million

KICKSTART ART GALLERY - a new public meeting space where artist, designers, creators, visionaries and the curious can find inspiration. Located at 117 E. Princess Anne Road

CHRYSLER MUSEUM MASTER PLAN - the City is evaluating ways to combat flooding in this area in which protection strategies include raising Grace Street, adding a flood barrier and utilizing new construction as additional flood barrier
