Your Director

Norfolk Public Library May–August, 2016

Greetings!

Are you ready to “Read for the Win” this summer with Norfolk Public Library (NPL)? Our annual Summer Reading Program (SRP) is gearing up for a competitive and fun season —we just need you! A calendar full of events are planned that center around this year’s theme of “Read for the Win”—and just in time for the summer Olympic games in Rio. Online registration for the Summer Reading Program begins June 25 at norfolkpubliclibrary.org. The program runs until August 6 and all ages are welcome to participate, from babies to adults. Participation is easy— simply read books, attend free events, and earn prizes and incentives along the way!

Library Hours: Slover Library & Pretlow Anchor Branch Monday - Thursday: 10 AM - 9 PM Friday & Saturday: 10 AM - 5 PM Sunday: 1 PM - 5 PM All Other Branches: Monday - Thursday: 10 AM - 7 PM Friday & Saturday: 10 AM - 5 PM Sunday: Closed

Holiday Closings: Memorial Day: Monday, May 30 Independence Day: Monday, July 4

There is no denying the benefits of summer reading, as national research shows that students who read during the summer score higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year than those who didn’t. NPL’s mission is to help bridge this summer gap while promoting literacy and life-long learning. Parents, be sure to lead the way by reading this summer, too. SRP isn’t limited to kids and NPL has an extensive digital collection of eBooks, eAudiobooks, TumbleBooks (eBooks for kids) and digital magazines that are free and accessible 24/7 with your NPL card! For more information about the Summer Reading Program, please call the NPL Youth Services Department at (757)664-7328 ext. 347 or 349. For library updates and the latest summer reading news, like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter!

See you at the library!

“The Airship ROMA Disaster in Hampton Roads,” by Nancy Sheppard Saturday, May 14 @ 2–4 PM Author Nancy E. Ford and Dr. Jeffrey L. Littlejohn Thursday, June 16 @ 6–7:30 PM The authors chronicle the history of Hampton Roads lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) communities with a particular emphasis on Norfolk and its early reputation as “the wickedest city in America” foreshadowing the emergence of an active and visible LGBT community during the 1960s. This development spawned creativity and activism, placing the local LGBT community on the national stage. After some setbacks, the new century brought a renaissance of networking and engagement that would bring the annual Pride Festival to center stage at Town Point Park in Norfolk.

“She Can Bring Us Home: Dr. Dorothy Boulding Ferebee, Civil Rights Pioneer,” by Diane Kiesel Thursday, July 7 @ 7–8:30 PM In the 1950s, Dr. Dorothy Boulding Ferebee, a physician and civil rights pioneer and native of Norfolk, was one of the most famous women in America. During the Great Depression she led the Missisippi Health Project, bringing medical care to impoverished sharecroppers in the Deep South. Later, as president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the National Council of Negro Women, she was a fearless advocate for African Americans and women. Since her death in 1980, however, this once well-known leader has fallen into obscurity. Diane Kiesel talks about her new biography of Dr. Ferebee in the hope of bringing her many achievements to the attention of a new generation.
