Public Safety In the event of fire. 1. Please evacuate the marquees and buildings as soon as possible. Do not stop to collect belongings. 2. If you find a fire please quickly contact a member of the security team, the information marquee or staff on stand number 37 in the main marquee – all have walkie talkies. 3. Fire extinguishers are positioned in the main marquee, in the lecture area and cafe and by the food area. 4. Head to the nearest fire point and wait. Please can you check your party are accounted for and do not re-enter until authorised. Water Safety 1. Mannington Hall is moated and has a lake. Please make sure you treat water with respect and stay clear. 2. Children should be accompanied at all times whilst in the grounds. 3. In the event of someone falling in, there are rescue rings positioned near the lake and moat. There are also wooden poles situated near the water to be used for rescue purposes only. 4. Do not attempt a rescue without first making sure of your own safety – and under no circumstances enter the water. There is a security team on site who will help. 5. Please take great care when pond dipping. In case of accident 1. First Aid cover will be available during both of the days open to the public by St John’s Ambulance. 2. In a real emergency please call 999 3. There is a first aid point near the entrance. If someone is injured this is your main point of contact. 4. The St John’s Ambulance Team can be contacted from this point. The site has rough ground in places please take care when walking. Please take extra care whilst in the car park. The Lost and found children point is at the information point in the main marquee.

Organisers Page Thank you for attending this year’s Norfolk Bird and Wildlife Fair, we hope you have enjoyed your visit. Preparations for this years fair have been a bit of a roller-coaster with disappointments, the development of good friendships and challenges. We wouldn’t be beaten as we think Norfolk is a special county and we want to raise money for conservation projects. So, we have continued to make it a bigger and better event. You may have seen on the website that at the beginning of the year, after meetings, it was decided to hold the event in association with another charitable organisation. This proved to be non-committal on their part, with lots of disap-

pointment, unfulfilled promises and to top it all they pulled out with 4 weeks to go leaving us with several major logistical problems. Not very professional, but there was nothing we could do. However we are delighted and grateful that the Norfolk Wildlife Trust have also partly associated with the event to give us the extra help we needed and they have been invaluable running up to the event, so our heartfelt thanks go to the team in the office. They will be the chosen charity for profits and the auction proceeds this year. This year we have put together a good mix of stands, that have been before, and new to make it varied and interesting. We have built up
the event to include more activities and have concentrated on providing a really interesting and diverse lecture programme. We hope you agree and our office is always open for good ideas and support. The event auction and donations page on the website over the last 12 months has raised £585 which will be presented to the BTO at this years fair. They were selected by visitors to the 2015 weekend as the receiving charity. Our thanks go to our cracking team of volunteers and to previous years visitors who have done a sterling job of telling their friends and family to come along for a good day out. It is you and the exhibitors that make this a fantastic weekend to promote Norfolk’s Fabulous environment in and out of the county. Jill and Robert Wilson
Bird Race 2015
Last year was the first year of the Norfolk Bird Fair Bird Race, where two teams competed against each other over a 24 hour period to see or hear as many species as possible, all in the aid of charity. The two teams were a Norfolk team led by Ian Dearing and a “Visitors” team lead by Andrew Whitelee. There is a long history of bird racing for charity, especially in Norfolk where the Big Bird Race back in the 1980s containing names like Bill Oddie and David Tomlinson amassed scores in excess of 140 species and raised thousands of pounds for conservation charities. Our aims were much more modest, but any proceeds raised were to go to the British Trust for Ornithology House Martin Appeal.
The Norfolk Bird Fair Bird Race would be a nod to all the bird races and racers that have gone before with an emphasis on honour, fun, gentle sledging and mind games before and during the race. So as the clock struck midnight on Saturday 10th May, the two teams disappeared into the night, reuniting in a North Norfolk pub several hundred miles, many frustrating moments and 23.45 hours later. Could a team with local knowledge beat a team of out of county upstarts and take the inaugural Norfolk Bird Fair Bird Race trophy kindly donated by Rob and Jill Wilson. Well, despite some terrible weather conditions fitting more of mid-December than mid-May, the Visitors managed a modest 119, losing by two birds to
Norfolk with 121 and raising a couple of hundred pounds for the
BTO. For 2016 we are hoping to be bigger and better and ultimately raise more money for our chosen charity, which this year is the wonderful Wader Quest. So far we have 4 teams entered, and anyone who sponsors a team for £5 will get a year’s free “Friend of Wader Quest” subscription. We are holding the race on 30th April this year, two weeks earlier than last year (and also a Bank Holiday weekend!) so here’s hoping for better weather, bigger totals and lots of money raised for Wader Quest. Wildlife Artist/Printmaker My rediscovery of Lino printing at classes run by The Leicester Print Workshop and The Society of Wildlife Artists (SWLA) and the positive response to the images I produced, were the catalysts in my decision to carve myself a new career as an Artist /Printmaker.

It was a big boost to my confidence, winning The Langford Press Best Printmaker Award at the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art (NEWA).and having my work accepted by the SWLA for inclusion in their Natural Eye Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.
which convinced me I was on the right track. My interest in Art and Nature stemmed from my childhood reading of the series of Ladybird books on the seasons. Illustrated by Charles Tunnicliffe, with wonderful images of nature through the changing seasons, they still inspire me today. The covers of the RSPB 'Birds' magazine were always eagerly anticipated with paintings by artists such as Robert Gillmor and Eric Ennion. I have always carried a sketchbook to draw my sightings, mostly around the reservoirs and countryside of Leicestershire and Northamptonshire with regular trips to Norfolk. These drawings are the basis for most of my prints and paintings. I also attend a weekly life
class, which really sharpens up my drawing and observation. I currently use a small printing press housed in my spare room to produce my prints using oil based inks, which I often tint with watercolour, though some are left as austere black and white images. My intentions are to try some other print techniques in the future. It has been a steep, but enjoyable learning curve over the past months and I have been helped and encouraged by fellow printmakers, artists and gallery owners. I am looking forward to showing my work at The Norfolk Bird Fair. Feel free to visit my stand for a chat and see me working.
