God’s Lamp James Dublin

The bright enticing sphere of flames, the sun Seen in the sky once the day has begun The king and chief of the birds in the sky Wakes us from the motionless sleep we lie The scorching rays so gleaming to the eye The lantern of day, allows you to work Lies sleeping at night, we hear a cricket’s chirp Hated for the hot showers of summer Invisible from our thoughts by thunder Neglected and unwanted till winter Till ice and snow fall as if a sprinkler Man is ungrateful, easy to infer Appreciate your life with all your might And pray for forgiveness every night

Were We Meant to Be? Jessica Lavertu Were we meant to be? When thou love be mild And my spirit be free. I only a child, Felt thy heart sink and break, Cold and empty; Such sorrow filled two beings The pain grievous. The sun shone that morning But my heart grew black. Self, Who is in thy mirror. Who is thee who I say I used to know On a bright blissful blue day Not so long ago. I see him everyday Distant, But in the same hallway.

I seek and long For things to be as they were When I thought he could do no wrong And all we needed was each other. Were we meant to be? Or will I find someone new; Time will unfold before me . Love like a fairy tale so much magic, My heart damaged but still remains, I’ll always be a hopeless romantic , Passion from within me pours when it rains. The way life unfolds, Reveals My life story yet to be told

Beyond the Bright Lights Shahra Madison

Beyond the bright lights It is like a dog fight Sneakers squeaking loudly on the floor Constantly checking the score Beyond the bright lights

Beyond the bright lights Refs making calls thought the night Feet thundering on the bleachers The floor screeching with sneakers Beyond the bright lights

Beyond the bright lights Striving to get it all right Hearing your name called on the microphone Hoping to set the game’s tone Beyond the bright lights

“BestMelanie Friend” Goossens

You are supposed to say to me That everything will be alright, be there when my eyes are the sea Instead I feel your painful bite, You are as toxic as a bee Your harsh words make me stay up at night

You say to me: fix your clothes Because they’re too plain for your taste, You tell me my cheap make up shows That I am my own sad disgrace, You tell me I reached a new low But I was raised in a different way

Friends are supposed to be a rock, A safe shelter when times are grey YOU need to be that friend to hug or talk, Be there for you, day after day So this may not come as a shock, I still stand by your side and stay.

He Walks Faith Rush He walks alone with no one there;

Tears of ice, on his heart they pound;

Night creeps upon him in the air,

They freeze his passion for a love

The trees are swaying back and forth--

That Cupid has brought from above,

He’s lost and wishes on the North,

But the night is still here waiting

But the wind blows the wish away

And the ice is still here blowing

Like the seeds of dandelion

To hide the pain he is showing.

Blowing throughout the winter sky; And he stands there as night walks by. The trees hide the imperfection Of flowers that seek affection From the bleak and bitter weather That makes them wilt towards the ground.

His life continues to go on

Another day comes back around,

Sitting alone to wait for dawn--

Sitting in the woods embracing sound.

The sun rose up and shined so bright

He sits there in complete silence

Reminding him of Heaven’s light.

Like a deer waiting for guidance.

The flowers give a warm embrace;

Yet, he walks around with no clue;

As mothers who are full of grace;

She has been waiting all along,

They speak of the great wondrous truth,

Silently singing her love song;

The joyful love kept from his youth.

He runs to find her location

The clear blue skies whisper to him,

Sight of her sparked a sensation,

Telling him of the love within.

And to the door, she had a key And her love is what made him free.

Winter

Anonymous 1

Falling snowflakes shining bright Cover everything in white. Floating down to the ground Could they last the whole year round? In the deep cold they become A shining blanket overcome. No more grass, no more flowers? Sap away sunshine’s powers. Packed tightly into a ball One tossed high and then a brawl. Forts and shovels all employed And the other teams destroyed Pulled down from the dusty attic, Sleds will make the kids ecstatic. Find a hill and start your run, Could summer ever be such fun. There is one drawback to admit The roads are frozen and unfit. And so from school we are denied, We do not want to fall behind. Falling snowflakes shining bright Cover everything in white, Floating down to the ground Could they last the whole year round?

A Psalm of Winter Zoey Papadopoulos

Snowflakes fall like gentle kisses, Icy crystals shine like diamonds. Prayers and wishes all are answered, calm has come to the horizon. Mother Nature lays a blanket, A breath is frozen in the air. An empty canvas yet to paint, bright whiteness stretches everywhere.

A Rare Snowfall Paul Mahoney I jump for joy when I receive the call, As I look outside and smile for snowfall! I watch the substance stick to my shoes. I slide across the ice to stay amused! Seems like Jack Frost sneezed as the snow blows, But the excitement of snow starts to slow. I never want this day to end, But like life even if we may pretend, Every great day has it’s unfortunate close, Like the browning of a bright red rose.

For Her Defense

Michael Ortiz

Let nothing stand in way of Her! She that could challenge Mew. She answers call from no foreign foe Allows no foe pass through. Her firm, green mountains stand above The valleys dug from pride. No cloud nor rain nor chilly snow Can break her fluid stride. The might of Her long history, To flex Her strength and spear. What fathers before believed in, Preserve our freedom and hear The chime of bells that echoes true That rings the soul awake. To serve Her is an honor great, The eagle none can shake. And now the pride ceases to flow As water down a fall. Better to fail an outlander Than rest behind the eight ball. The interests are for greater good, But no good shall She see. A problem solved not by the gun But life of returnee.

Our Words Are Like a Sword ll

James Cooper

Our words are like a sword. They sting and slash through flesh as a knife would cut through bread. Those slurs and calls that break the noise strike hard, like lightning, shocking and stimulating. The rhetorician and rapper are one and the same, masters of spoken word, adamant in making a change. Their delivery is impeccable, reaching all corners of the world, Yet the bark of boorish boys bites better than their pathetic pathos. The soul, inundated with doubt is stifled by their jeers, and O the pain it feels when they are left alone to fall. Our words are like a sword, But you also wield a shield. The emboldened storm of ignorance can be combatted with education. Leave your olden shell of prejudice, and lead your people Moses. Enlightened life is priceless, so use it while you have it. Use your weapons to free your mind; Break the shackles that bind you.

Away

Darden Purrington

Walking, Out to the edge, Down to the gallows, Of which all fish fear. Taking elongated strides. Racing to the edge, Where my soul longs to be. The edge, Where the wisteria blooms, In the warm sunlight, Breathing, Taking in the fresh, spring air. Wading in the everstill, Cold morning, Water. Staring into the, Horizon; The mesmerizing sunrise. Believing in the, Impossible. Living in the, Future hours, Unattainable heights. Doomed to life, In the mortal world. Snapped back, To the waking world. The cold water, Numbing my bare feet. Slow to rise, Slow to leave, Never to turn away.

Circle of Life, Sad to See

Anonymous 2

Circle of life, sad to see My dear grandfather I hope you hear me, I’m thinking of the change you made I loved you even though you were strange,

Circle of life, sad to see.

Your voice echoes right beside me, As the shadows disappear, I feel free The tears trail to me, they scream and scream, We will meet soon, in my next dream

Circle of life, sad to see.

The Day She Learned to Dance Timeri Jordan

Sister, would she move with beauty, As her feet touched here and there. Dance away the fresh purity, Of a bird leaving nest to air. Hope we may she makes safe passage, Through endeavors we may fret, In this desolate message, Journeys she will never forget.

The Hopping Rabbit

Anonymous 3

Hopping Rabbit, who owns you? Dost thou know who owns you? Gave you love and plenty of food, within their cozy house and never too shrewd. Gave the love so bright that nothing else seemed right. Gave thee such tender affection, powerful enough to create strong connection. Hopping Rabbit, who owns you? Dost thou know who owns you? Little Rabbit, I’ll tell you! Little Rabbit, I’ll tell you! He is known by my name, for he calls himself the Rabbit. He is sweet and he is kind, how could you ever be so blind? I a child and thou a Rabbit, We are known by the same. Little Rabbit, we love thee. Little Rabbit, we love thee.

Little Bird

Abby Wright

I walked upon the sand in the sunshine While list’ning to the wind Then I saw a bird, it began to stir It appeared again singing a hymn. Little Bird, who are you singing to? Why is your song so sad? You fly so free, and as you should with glee. Fly away. Be free. Be glad.

Forest of Silence

Allison Kesser

Sitting in the silent field I become one with nature, I look to see the birds singing, and the trees sway like whimsical ballerinas during a recital, I think back to our time and long for that day. Laughing, loving, lying in our spot, Beneath the sun that now warms me just the same, As that day we spent together innocent and naive Before the outside world intrusively came. We were so happy-- not a care in the world, Until the darkness caught up with us like fingers Extinguishing the flame of a burning candle, And now only your memory lingers.

Hunt of the Fowl, Flee of the Fish Alex Yates

The serene flight of a bird; strong and free Humming softly a tune to the tide, Endless rolling waves; far from any tree, He watches the surf with eyes open wide, And then, beyond the veil of bluish-green, Like a priceless diamond of the sea Emerges the joyous triumph, at last seen, Diving suddenly; with abundant glee, Towards the newfound treasure found below, Radiating with natural splendor, Scales alive in afternoon sun; aglow, Bolting deep, far from the dying ember, Ten thousand of them; in perfect harmony, Ten thousand of them beneath the sea.

Calm Day

Sarah Green 35 . Horizons art and literary magazine 2015

The Calm Vera Sacks Crash! The waves broke on the sand, Water flowed up onto land, As soft warm breezes blew by, Seagulls filled the bright blue sky. The biggest wave in the world, Turned water white as it swirled The ocean waved hello to, All who swam in waters blue. Everybody having fun, While playing under the sun, Many things to do and see, Lots of joy for you and me. There are critters big and small, Pinching, stinging, short and tall, Some can fit right in your palm, All adding to the beach calm. The sun is hot, like a fire, The horizon we admire For its view and its beauty, Sunset watching is a duty. By the end you’re nice and tanned, Playing with the cooled down sand. What was once blue, a dark sky, Sad to say your last goodbyes.

The Fire Burns, the Fire Dies

Clara Deng

The fire burns, the fire dies, A baby is born with warmth from lights; Throughout his childhood he cries and cries, For this baby is always the focus of family life And the fire burns, the fire dies. Youth ticks the clock and comes, Quarrels on the dinner table never demise; The fire of jealousy burns at the bottom of his heart, Finally this enmity rips the family apart, And the fire burns, the fire dies. Twilight years were filled with fame and wealth, The fire of desire gives him the impetus To get rid of his childhood’s gloom, But nirvana does not come to his tomb, And the fire burns, the fire dies.

Forever Anonymous 4 Red jumping into the sky The only face I saw was yours And I never thought you’d die But they say when it rains, it pours. A different yet familiar red, Reeling through the streets No matter what you said... Time began to creep. The smell of home Salt water hits your feet You wouldn’t ever leave us alone, So you walked by my side through the streets. It was the annual tradition And now it was the final one, Filled with love and so much fun Only He knew it was done. Living like you were dying On the warmest winter day You said I couldn’t be crying But when it rains it pours.

The Ocean

Jack Wentworth Ocean! Ocean! Deep and blue. How your size cannot be true. Who has seen you be so vast? I wish I could see you at last. What your beauty? What your shine? All the time you seem so fine. How sunrise and how sunset? The shine of sun and water met. Deep and dark your bottom is. Like the pits of Hell ‘tis. But what could replace the fire? What could be down there so dire? The large creature, that large beat. Who lurks thine bottom in search of feast. And what could be there of that kind? Who dares search and who dares find? That When man stopped their search so deep And went back to their lonely keep. Were you finally glad to see Your enemy run scared and flee? Ocean! Ocean! Deep and blue. How your size cannot be true. Who has seen you be so vast? I wish I had seen you at last.

Never Is It Here to Stay

Elijah Nestor

Never is it here to stay, I start to see as it swims away Out of my hands back to its home The fish leaves me, I am all alone, Never is it here to stay.

Never is it here to stay, Here and gone like the traveler’s way But there is one day that I fear The day the trout is never here, Never is it here to stay.

Costa Rican Sun

Jordan Dobrinsky

Sun Sun! Burning bright At the beaches of the night What immortal hand or eye Could frame thy imagery? In what distant deeps or skies Burnt the fire of mine eyes? Oh what wild colors do I admire? Soothing sights as bright as fire And what beauty and what art Could arise and melt thy heart? And when thy heart began to beat I fell to my hand and my feet What the color what time that day In the distance was thy wave? What the sand what maze Dare its crazy colors to daze? When the sky spit the gleaming colors run And water reflected it in the beautiful sun Costa Rican sun made me smile Costa Rican sun worthwhile Sun Sun! Dancing Light

Grant Campion

My dancing friend, if I could move like thee, And I could jump and leap through the darkness, But I shall not be bound for I am free, While you remain chained to your wick, joyless. Noses squinch at hints of your appearance, As you secrete an intangible smell; The smell of sweet summer states your presence, The memories push me into a spell. Unmatched by the starlight for which I yearn, You shine for me and fill the room with cheer. In terms of value, you’re worth a few burns, But the more you flicker, the more I fear. My fast fading friend who seemed to be free; My fasting fading friend who burned out for me.

Letter from the Editor When I was filling out my Common Application, Mrs. Davis told me that the average editor spends around five hours a week on Horizons. In my head, I laughed at the thought. There was no way that I would spend that much time on a literary magazine, but I was incredibly wrong. I was nonstop working on Horizons every week. Once my AP English class was finished, my free bell immediately became AP Horizons. Countless hours were put in during school, after school and after graduation. Luckily, Horizons became something I was extremely passionate about. As crazy as it seems due to my constant complaining to Mrs. Davis and Mr. Benedict, I really loved working on it. I would like to thank the two of them for dealing with me. Mrs. Davis was always there when I had questions, which was all the time, and made sure I was sticking to my schedule. Mr. Benedict was always there when I needed to unload or quickly hold up a photo and ask, “Don’t think! What season is this?” I’d like to give a tremendous thank you to Bailey Holmes Spencer and Catherine Kim for helping me with the confusing world of InDesign about which I was completely clueless with until they showed me around. Thank you to Gin Chan and Alexis McGurn for filling up this magazine with so many beautiful pictures. Finally, thank you to all the students who submitted work and dealt with my constant nagging to send me digital copies. I know I was annoying. Every Horizons editor has many tough calls when it comes to deciding the direction in which the magazine should go. As I went through my senior year, I could tell Horizons was going through the seasons at the same pace. I truly hope you enjoy this journey through the seasons as you read this issue of Horizons. Please enjoy our hard work! Sarah Green Editor-In-Chief 53 . Horizons art and literary magazine 2015
