Done? Bailey Jones Everyone is telling me that I should be done I don’t know if I want to be I don’t know how to be But I do know that this isn’t healthy The crying The endless disappointment All I do is wonder If you started thinking If you’re okay If today’s a better day It never is… For either of us Everyone’s talking at me I’ve done all I can You’re too long gone You can’t be helped That’s what they say I just don’t believe it You make me happier than most But you hurt me more than anyone But if I leave, Am I any better than her? I really want to help you I’m just tired of the pain
So you tell me Should I be done?

Dead Leaves
Sophie Zhou
It is the indistinct emotion, gloom but great, Which showed up when Lady Fall dance with Splendor and elegance. Leaves lost pith, Then revolve and fall They’ve been debilitate. Petulant wind engulfs thousands of leaves like cate. Listen! The graceful ditty is performed. Red and yellow—delicate pictures formed. The art of nature sentimentally. Dear leaves! Dear mom! Your endless love for Earth. Though your vita’s fragile and rather short, Your real values are not useless or weak. You die for recurring cycles for new birth, Then you start deposing yourself to make peak— Peak of the new leaves that we’ve all sought.

Street of the Greedy
Sophie Zhou
It is a typical Friday night on Narrow-Minded Boulevard. The neon lights of the Saki A Go Go are bright and blurry. James and Kali have just arrived at this central street of Gray Town—just like its name, even in the summer, people cannot see clearly due to the fog which always envelopes the town. The pub is full of people. The pale waitress with bleached blonde hair has huge black circles around her eyes—she is trying her best to get through the busy crowd. “Here is your drink, sir,” says the waitress, with a weak smile on her face. “Thank you,” James replies. He stares at her back for a long time until she vanishes into the 7 . Horizons Art and Literary Magazine 2016

crowd. Then he reaches down for something that the poor waitress has dropped. “Seems like we are having lucky night.” As he waves his hand, his girlfriend can see a Benny smiling at her. On their way back to their hotel, they look for some place to spend their found money. At that moment, they see a fancy teapot from a street vender. As they start to examine the teapot, Kali whispers to James, “This really is our lucky night. This poor old man is blind. We could just take whatever we want, and he won’t even notice.” They look at each other, pick up several things that seem valuable and start to leave without saying a word. The blind man is still sitting in the wind with thin clothes, all by himself. Slowly, he opens his mouth to speak. “5 years ago, I was as greedy as you. I have been stuck in this town for what I did. Now finally someone can replace me.” He smiles. Horizons Art and Literary Magazine 2016 . 8
Drowning For Air Cecilia Innis
Wind whispers through the black, hushed night. Through opaque night it races to nowhere. Like nature’s pen it writes and whirls and wonders why it brews like the depths of a troubled mind. How hopeless. For calm it cannot find. The cold abyss in my chest beats, thump, thumping to an unreal tune. No meaning holds these blank repeats, yet wispy winds through me are strewn. Strapped me to life, stuck me to fate For my through my soul wind reverberates. If nights be stale for air is still and will to breathe may steady shrink, hopes for eternal rest are shrill, my mind can’t calm, therefore I think that days are dark and filled with dread, plagued thoughts entangled into thread. The wind whispers in mine own ear, and from its voice I cannot flee. The river rushes all too clear my being with me won’t agree. I’m sinking in my own despair, dying to live, drowning for air. 9 . Concrete Sidewalks, Concrete People Haley Bartel In the city that never sleeps, Everyone has someplace to go. Hidden are the secrets the city keeps, Most of which we will never know. People you brush past on the street All have a demon they need to beat. Nature breathes out foggy clouds of smoke. They fill throughout the city like A park would smell of pine or oak. A man passes by on his bike, Those on foot part like the red sea. O, how does one compare to thee? People, they walk from place to place In a hurry, all running late. So big and yet, so little space To move, to live, to find your fate. It all seems so big from a glance, But from above you look like ants. Strong, wonderful winds, wisps of hair Fly around, getting in the way. Bundled up, but your face is bare. You’ve never seen a colder day. When in the city, life is fast. Your days of calmness long since past.

Ocean Blue Milan Brooks Make me feel small and do cover me in thine swells of blue ferment. Carve lands as I often wonder what waves do after torment’n thine shores and meeting in the summer storms. Breaking the life you once bent. The sharp breeze of salt-lined ether Tethers me to a land of sand. Am I free? May I soar? Feathers like one of God’s angels? Thou stands for cleansing one’s sins in peace. An ocean vast, a sea lowland. Captivate me with thine cold coast. Plunging into your depths, my life would end. A watery grip most unfortunately suffer rife. When I leave you, now a new ghost. Plunging into your depths with strife.

I Dreamed a Dream Grace Georgo I dreamed a dream that could not be, to love and live, so calm and free. But life has killed the dream I made, when I was young and unafraid. Once I wished on the stars at night, that God would bless my shining light, Which lay ahead for me to chase through the wonders of outer space. I dared to dream that every day would be the same as yesterday. But life goes on and so do dreams, Because life is not all it seems. I had a dream to reach the stars from earth to moon and onto Mars but some dreams are not meant to be like those that lack reality. Like a flower that wilts and dies, a dream exists till others die. And when a dream cannot come true, hope is lost and life is too. I dreamed a dream that could not be, no life, no hope, no striving to be more than what my life has deemed, for life has killed the dream I dreamed.

Her Eyes Darden Purrington
They were a grey-green unseeing color with an astounding golden-brown ring around the
center. Whenever you met them, they pierced your skull and invaded your soul, cutting away all fallacies and seeing straight into your deepest thoughts and desires...
They were typically stormy and glossed over, and it was not often that they paid much attention to their surroundings at all. Sometimes it seemed as if they were searching for something inside their owner’s head, something that, coincidentally, could never be found. Come to think of it, the only outward manifestation of them ever paying attention came in the form of how jumpy the owner was. They themselves bounced around in a seemingly random order from item to item or thought to thought without a known rhyme or reason, ever analyzing yet never really connecting. Well, not quite never. Occasionally, when, as if by some miracle, the clouds parted and they looked into yours, and they were yelling, screaming even. The emotion was bright and heavy and vibrant and charged with electricity all at the same time. It was so strong that for a second you thought it might knock you off your feet. But then, as soon as you saw it, it was gone and the quiet, stormy eyes were back and you had to wonder if it was ever really there to start...

Distant Memories
Clare Harbin
Rewind—The path, the shell, the moss. All distant memories from once upon a summer. The intended time with the intended person. Maybe if I say the right word, think of the right memory, it will show itself again. Or maybe it was only destined for that summer haze...one that seems so long ago. I can still see her laugh lines, her face full of wonder as she noticed the break in the trees. She was careful to walk over every spiderweb, So not to disturb even the littlest of friends. The lush green moss under our feet as we bounded over fallen trees and ascended the path. All while the Sun hit her ringlet curls shining as bright as her smile. Stop—The memory freezes in place as she begins to tap her watch. Time is up. My soul is pulled towards the path, longing to find out where it leads. Play—We turn back, my face in protest, placing a shell at the base of the path, marking its opening, and leaving with it a small piece of my soul. Fast Forward—I sometimes wonder if the path ever existed, whether it was merely a figment of my imagination Or maybe it just showed itself to us because the time was right. The piece of my soul still lies with that moss, that shell, that path. It is frozen in the memory, forever. And I’m okay, even if I never get it back.

Ready for Anything James Cooper
There are sensations of the wind And vibrations of heat That you can only feel where I rest my feet: A warm day, Where the sun is shining bright, And the leaves On the trees Cascade down to the soggy ground. The scorching autumn Turns into a scorching winter and then the Blazing heat transforms into a snowstorm Rushing, hustling through the streets And driveways. Kids are screaming, “SCHOOL’S OUT.” When they see the white flakes falling from the Sky of the New Year they All want to be here. And now the storm persists on the first day of Spring brings us cold winds and chilly showers Like Mother Nature forgot to pay the Landlord for the hot water. Only here does the winter meet the spring and the Summer meets the autumn. The Virginia weather keeps me

The summer night sunsets, Make me have no regrets. The water glows brightly, Like the sun covered lightly. Orange and red showing, Water oceangoing And sand in between the toes. The moment in time froze, The warm weather sunsets, The summer night sunsets. The summer night sunsets. The sky sings like quartets. The day is ending now. The sun is falling, wow! The colors are vibrant. Stars are in alignment. It’s wonderful somehow. The night will be calm now. Winter, people forget The summer night sunset.

Ocean Mystique Brooke Walthall As night becomes day, the sun casts her rays over the quiet of the beach. Dark sky becoming pink, waking sea gulls that fly, spreading their laughter in the sky. The spray of the ocean hit the sand and seeks play as the deep water sparkles like white jewels. Soft sand warms from the sun, no longer cool. As life begins people enjoy the day as King Neptune did, ruler of the sea. They frolic and play in the surf and sand while they watch for fish and sea creatures galore as King Neptune did, ruler of the sea. Looking up to see the sunset, The colors shine causing a haze. People watching like we just met, The millions of different rays, This view will not make me upset, Santorini, Greece has its ways. The thought of this place makes me cry, Thinking of the bright blue water shines, The thought of this place makes me fly. I feel like this place is all mine: Why would I want to say goodbye? Maybe God will give you a sign. God can show you the way to live. He can help guide you through the bad, God will show you that you are alive; It will make you just want to thrive. A Day at Nationals Park Ryan Moninger
It’s a sunny day at Nationals Park. Sweat gleaming off the backs of the players. Fans cheering in the multiple layers of the jumping park with a guy named Clark. The music starts and gives the crowd a spark. Bryce Harper the God-like team player can see the ball like a soothsayer. He hits that ball with a mighty fine arc. It seems like it goes all the way to the moon. The ball screeching as it cuts through the wind. It’s about to hit that flying balloon. The balls now coming down in a streamline. The crowd starts to cheer on this great afternoon. It’s a homerun right next to the foul line!

I stare past the waves, to the horizon. The blue stretches till it touches the stars With power and grace far stronger than our Gizmos and gadgets. Water always wins. The ocean will watch humans come and go. Sitting by the water, I send it dreams. It will never cease to make its rhythm. Stronger than a million men, we know Crashing with limitless repetition. Sitting by the water, blue diamonds gleam.

The majestic sun is the color of Pink and orange, the colors I love, The sound of boom boom boom lies; Waves to a state of hearing Poseidon’s cries, Look down and see the reflection of above. Dear God! The place is so quiet you can hear a dove; The sun blazing and gleaming in the skies, The earth has much more to share. I walk down The path to the sand, the houses asleep. Sticky Smiles Clare Harbin I want to grow an orchard with you; smiling wide, all the crevices of our faces filling with joy, as we plant the tree seedlings in the ground, our knees covered with dirt. I want to tend to cows as much as I do sunflowers, to have the golden petals lying in a crystal vase by your favorite window. Peach eating midday by the spring just down the path, jumping in and swimming, all while holding hands and stealing kisses under the Sun’s warm rays. I want endless exploring, our adventurous hearts and curious minds never losing their fire, never ceasing to be in existence. I want nights of laughter that never seem to end. Crosscountry road trips, only stopping to pick wild flowers from the same field we picnic on, lying on the blanket we stow in the back of our car.

I want to climb trees with you, forage for berries with you, raise children with you. Our children will have my kind soul, your caring hands, our endless laughter, your smile and sparkling eyes. They will have our love for nature and our endless wonderalways. I want to grow old with you, snuggled up on our porch watching the sunset. And when I’m dying, I want you to take me to our orchard right at dawn; the same one where we started our lives together, so that we can share a bite out of the fruit we have loved for all these years. We frame each other’s sticky smiles in our minds, peach juice dribbling down our chins, tears falling down our faces. Fingers intertwined, you kiss my forehead as I watch the sunrise one last time.

The flowers sway, like they’re dancing, In the meadow they bloom so brightly. The daffodils look like they’re prancing. Even though the wind touches them lightly, The wind and rain whistle and can sing. Purple flowers are almost unsightly. The flowers sway, like they’re dancing, Fluorescent flowers spin in the wind. New colors have been enhanced, Beautiful colors have combined With flowers dancing, no one is glancing What is happening with mankind? Look at the dancing flowers now, Admire the swirling shade. The wind makes the plants take a bow. Bees come and pollinate, they raid Before the colors fade. Quick, come enjoy the colors.

Speechless
S
Catherine Kim
he sat across from him with her legs crossed, waiting for him to move. Finally his lids fluttered open and revealed his blue, blue eyes, which were like the calm before the storm. He was like the calm before the storm: quiet, composed, and reserved; yet she knew a storm was brewing underneath his gentle façade. So she lay low, letting the waves engulf her as to not disrupt the tide. They sat there in silence, but they were comfortable with each other’s silence. It was truly a blessing to be able to soak up each other’s company without any forced small talk. That certain moment was a little different, though. Something in the air made her body shake and tongue tingle. The silence was getting louder and louder and louder, until it was ringing in her ears. It was deafening. She had to fill it with her voice or surely her eardrums would explode. She wrecked her mind, trying to think of something to say, but the words just wouldn’t form in her mouth. Her mind was filled with ideas and emotions, but she couldn’t quite convert them to words. Fragments of ideas were there: hints of love, a glimpse of tenderness, a peek of concern. But whenever she tried to grasp onto the ideas, they slipped from her fingertips, as if they were taunting her. Without total understanding of the ideas, she wasn’t quite sure what they meant. Love. Did she mean to tell him she loved him? Did she mean to tell him that she did not love him? Did she mean to tell him that love is just a concept made by man to chain his lover? She wasn’t quite sure. All she knew was that she could no longer speak, and the silence wasn’t getting any quieter. “Do you have something to say?” He could tell something was wrong with her by the way her eyes darted and her mouth opened and closed like a fish frantically gapping for air. She tried to say something, anything, but she couldn’t push the air past her vocal chords. She bore her eyes into his, so he could at least read her face. “I can’t speak,” she hoped her face said. She hoped the confusion overflew from her tear ducts and left blotchy red marks on her face. “Woman, say something.”

Scattered Beauty MaryLiz Lentz
She could see the storm growing in his eyes. The waves were crashing against the walls, threatening to break the carefully built façade in seconds. His eyes, which were usually blue like the Amalfi Coast, were a thunderous grey. She frantically wracked through her mind, trying to fish out any words. But the countless fragments in her head that had been at a tauntingly close distance from her fingertips were now gone. There was nothing for her to grasp on to, no words to be formed. Her mind was blank, and she was alone. Complete and utter isolation. “Darn it, you’re freaking me out!” His fist pounded against the wooden table that stood between the two. If there was only a way for her to tell him that she could just not speak. If she could, she would write him a 10-page paper on how she felt at the moment, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t even manage to extract a single word from her mind. She could not talk. She could not think. When she looked at the room around her, her mind recognized the objects but could not process any further. It was like taking a picture without having it interpreted. She saw his face but could not think past the fact that his eyes were blue, his hair was dark, and his mouth delicate. “What are you thinking right now?” All of a sudden the storm died. He whispered with a small and shaky voice at a level only someone directly next to his mouth would be able to hear. As he waited for her answer, his muscles tensed up as if he anticipated her answer to be a blow in the guts. The stormy water was back to its peaceful state, but it was much darker and deeper. She didn’t like the gloomy sea. Her mind was still completely hollow, but there was one sentence triggered by the insecurity in his eyes. “Nothing. I was thinking about nothing.” It was a truth within a lie. She knew it, he knew it but neither cared. His tense shoulders relaxed as he walked over to her and drew her into a hug. She dug into his arms, wondering if the words would ever come back to her.

Horizons Art and Literary Magazine 2016 . 52
Letter from the Editor-in-Chief When I was first appointed editor-in-chief, I told myself, “I’m going to make this the most aesthetically pleasing issue ever.” Yes, I am very ambitious and tend to forget that I got a 2/9 on a “How Well Do You Actually See Autumn Colors” BuzzFeed quiz. It also didn’t help that I am a procrastinating perfectionist because I found myself conflicted between Candara and Arial (I ended up choosing Candara as you can see) when we were already two weeks behind production schedule. Yet here we are with the 51st issue of Horizons, united under the theme of “lights.” The pictures are deliberately organized from dark to light and can be interpreted in several ways. The progression of night to day. Despair to hope. Ignorance to enlightenment. I’ll leave that up to the readers. I’d like to send out my gratitude to Mrs. Davis for being such a supportive adviser and making sure I booked meetings for Horizons. She was always there to keep me going whenever I slowed down and started getting lazy. I’d also like to send a big shout out to MaryLiz for sharing her photography skills, something I’m not blessed with. The perk of living with a photographer is being able to barge into her room late at night and frantically scream, “I need a dark picture for the cover. DARK. Maybe with lights. One single light, actually. Preferably by the end of this week. Thanks.” That, ladies and gentlemen, is how the cover for this issue was born. Every page has been crafted with keen attention so that the pictures, literary work, and layout are tied together. Hours of work have been dedicated to these pages, and I hope you enjoy them.
