Last year, we saw the Meredith Center for the Arts become fully integrated into the daily lives of our students. Every class period of every day, our students use the facility that so many of you supported and made a reality. When our students stand on the stage in the Hackney Theater to address the student body or perform a musical solo in front of an audience of hundreds, we know that students are benefitting from our fulfilled visions for this building. Norfolk Collegiate is an ambitious, dynamic community. We must be so in order to prepare our students for the ever-changing world. We are continually looking forward to take advantage of opportunities to advance our mission, to engage our students and to inspire their success. Whether through facilities such as the Meredith Center, our educational technology program or professional development funds to support the faculty, it is our community’s support that helps drive us forward. Our donors are committed to providing the necessary resources to our students, continuing Norfolk Collegiate’s tradition of excellence. Donation at the 2014 Auction provided 3D printers and workstations for each division of our school. The official launch of the 1:1 iPad® program at the Middle and Upper School was made possible by the generosity of donors who committed to support faculty preparation to fully integrate the educational devices into the school. Support like that is transforming our students’ experience. The legacy of support continued across school years and impacts generations of our students. Norfolk Collegiate is a forward-leaning, ambitious school for the right reasons. We want our students to have the finest facilities. We want our faculty members to have the best resources to deliver a program with excellence. Volunteers and donors alike help bring our vision to life; and it’s your continued support that will help us to achieve greatness. Your continued support will help us attain future goals. We offer a sincere thank you to both our past and future supporters. Great things happen because of you.
Sincerely,
Scott G. Kennedy Headmaster

And while positive engagement can be seen behind every door of every classroom at Collegiate, it is the engagement of our donors and supporters behind the scenes that help make it all possible. We are incredibly lucky to look back on a successful year of fundraising and genuine support from donors, whether through our events, Annual Fund, endowment or capital campaigns. You have shown us that you support our mission and vision for the school. This philanthropy report summarizes the many ways in which your collective support has helped make this school a better place. It has been said (by my dear friend Sandy Harris) that being board chair at Norfolk Collegiate School is one of the best jobs a person can ever have. Indeed this is quite true. To have had the opportunity to work side by side with so many dedicated Trustees has been a true honor. Couple that with the time spent with our incredible volunteers, faculty, staff and administrators and it becomes bitter sweet to end my five years as board chair. I would be quite remiss if I didn’t state what a joy it has been to work with such a consummate professional as our beloved Headmaster Scott Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy’s dedication to the students and the school sets an extremely high standard for those around him. As I depart, I am proud to pass the gavel to Taylor Franklin ’00, our first alumnus to hold the position of chairman of the board. The future looks very bright for Norfolk Collegiate School! Go OAKS! Turf Fields & Lights Campaign In 2013, Norfolk Collegiate completed Phase III of the Rings of Life Campaign and opened the Meredith Center for the Arts, which has proven to be an invaluable addition to the campus. Upon completion of the Center for the Arts, the Board of Trustees moved to begin the next phase of capital improvements, focusing on athletic facilities. After conducting a feasibility study, Norfolk Collegiate identified its next capital campaign as a $2.5 Million “Turf Fields and Lights Campaign,” chaired by former chairman of the board and alumni parent, Henry U. Harris, III. There is an unwavering commitment to athletics in the Norfolk Collegiate community, and the addition of turf fields and lights to the campus is seen as the highest priority to further the program. The benefit of investing in new turf fields and lights is two-fold, with improvements impacting every current and future student at Norfolk Collegiate, as well as the greater Hampton Roads area. The renovated athletic fields will consist of two 70x110 yard, competition-sized, pre-lined artificial turf fields. Synthetic turf fields provide a consistent and predictable playing ground for all teams and increases the athletic opportunities for our athletes. In addition to the field renovation, six state-of-the-art Musco® lights will be installed to provide access to fields yearround, regardless of time of day. The Norfolk Collegiate athletic program has transformed over the years and currently boasts a partnership with Bon Secours Health Systems for the athletic training program, giving students, faculty members and coaches access to physicians specializing in sports medicine and injury prevention. The strength and conditioning program has emerged as one of the most comprehensive in the region and is available to all students. The missing link to current athletic program is reliable facilities for field sports. This campaign will bring the athletic facilities to a new level. As Norfolk Collegiate continues to lead the way in independent school education with an extensive integrated technology program, rigorous academic program and a deep commitment to the arts, the Turf Fields & Lights Campaign will position the school to be a leader in the athletic community by being the first K-12 school in the greater Hampton Roads region with two side-by-side, competition-size turf fields with lights. For more information on the Turf Fields & Lights Campaign, please contact director of development, Michelle Adcock at 757.480.2348 or michelle.adcock@norfolkcollegiate.org. 2013-2014 Annual Philanthropy Report

An engraved brass nameplate bearing the donor’s inscription of choice will be affixed to the arm of the chair to create a lasting tribute.
Your nameplate will be placed on the arm of the chair, clearly visible to others.
Seat naming assignments will be based on the order of donor commitment and are subject to availability.

The CAPT J.J. George Memorial Scholarship for Achievement in Math In 2013, Susan George established The CAPT J.J. George Memorial Scholarship for Achievement in Math in memory of her husband and former Norfolk Collegiate teacher, Joseph J. George, Jr., who passed away in 2011. After serving a 29-year career in the United States Navy, Captain Joseph J. George, Jr. retired in 2001 and took advantage of the Troops to Teachers program at Old Dominion University. While becoming a teacher wasn’t initially on his mind following retirement, his love for math and children drew him to this new career path. Mr. George taught math in the Norfolk Public School district for three years prior to coming to Norfolk Collegiate in 2005 to teach middle school geometry and algebra. When asked why she wanted to create the scholarship, Mrs. George explained that her husband had died suddenly and she wanted to find a way to cope with the grief and keep his memory alive. After discussing her options with friends and family, Susan came to Norfolk Collegiate to see if there was a way to start a scholarship that would reflect the values and ideals that her husband stood for and promote his love for mathematics. J.J. George was known as a no-nonsense teacher with a heart of gold. He loved rock music, fly fishing, flying and sharing stories and experiences with his students. He held his students to the highest standards, but had a soft spot for those who worked the hardest, even if they didn’t have the highest grades. Thanks to the George family and numerous supporters of the fund, Norfolk Collegiate is able to provide a partial scholarship for a rising ninth-grade student who demonstrates a commitment to the study mathematics. The student must be highly motivated and passionate about mathematics, but not necessarily the best in the class. The first CAPT J.J. George Memorial Scholarship for Achievement in Math will be awarded in the spring of 2015. Endowed scholarships at Norfolk Collegiate allow families and foundations to provide financial assistance to students who exemplify particular characteristics, interests or talents, based on the donor’s priorities. Naming a scholarship is a wonderful way to recognize or memorialize a loved one, friend, classmate, or business. All students who receive a named scholarship are made aware that others share a commitment to their education.

The A. Kenneth Scribner, Jr. and Sue Faulkner Scribner Headmaster’s Seat of Excellence Endowment The A. Kenneth Scribner, Jr. and Sue Faulkner Scribner Headmaster’s Seat of Excellence Endowment, established in May 2005, provides our school the opportunity to reward and recognize Norfolk Collegiate School “master teachers” who enhance the core of our campus’ intellectual community. It is through this fund that we are able to ensure that our students are learning in the most innovative and engaging settings from the most qualified and collaborative faculty members. This endowment helped fund the promotion of English Department Chair, Judy Davis, who has assumed a new position as Director of Curriculum and Instruction while also continuing to provide a challenging and engaging classroom experience for her students. In her new role, Davis will be responsible for coordinating the school’s professional development opportunities by working with department heads, grade-level coordinators and the faculty to lead Collegiate’s K-12 curricular development and review processes. Additionally, Davis also will work closely with the director of instructional technology and communication arts to assist with the planning and integration of technology and project-based learning initiatives. Davis, who is the mother of two Norfolk Collegiate graduates, Michael ’02 and Matthew ’04, has been part of the Collegiate faculty for eight years. She is a Ph.D. candidate at The Catholic University of America, holds a Master of Arts from Old Dominion University and a Bachelor of Arts from Hood College.
In Memoriam Mr. A. Kenneth Scribner, Jr. Mr. A. Kenneth Scribner, Jr., passed away peacefully on his 90th birthday on Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014. Ken was a native of Virginia, a retired businessman, a veteran who served in World War II, and a generous contributor to Norfolk Collegiate. October 9, 1924 – October 9, 2014 Norfolk Collegiate began in 2001 when he toured the campus and was impressed with the enthusiasm with which the students approached the excellent academic program. Eager to inspire an enduring sense of responsibility and support, Ken began fundraising efforts and lessons in philanthropy at Norfolk Collegiate. Ken has been the inspiration behind many of our traditions and programs, including the Jefferson Challenge, the Valedictorian Chair, the Headmaster’s Seat of Excellence, the iconic Sue Faulkner Scribner Bell Tower, the Legacy of Diversity Fund, gift matching
initiatives, alumni challenges and so much more. As a school, we know that the traditions started by Ken Scribner will live on for generations to come and our future students will continue to learn about his legacy of philanthropy. 2013-2014 Hackney Award Winners LOWER SCHOOL: Jan Weintraub
headmaster scott kennedy with award winners jan weintraub, garrett booker and rebecca zborowski, and john hackney.
Jo Melchor Hackney and John H. Hackney Jr. Memorial Endowment Fund Award The prestigious Jo Melchor Hackney and John H. Hackney Jr. Memorial Endowment Fund Award was presented to Jan Weintraub, Garrett Booker and Rebecca Zborowski, for use in the 2013-2014 school year, in recognition of their dedication and excellence in teaching at Norfolk Collegiate School. Mr. John H. Hackney Jr., former trustee of Norfolk Collegiate School, has been a member of the Norfolk Collegiate School community since 1984, when his granddaughter, Cara Paige Oxenham, entered first grade. He and his wife, Jo Melchor Hackney, who passed away in 2003, developed an appreciation for the small class sizes, dedicated teachers and high quality facilities at Norfolk Collegiate School. Mr. Hackney established the Jo Melchor Hackney and John H. Hackney Jr. Memorial Endowment Fund in 2005 to provide three annual merit awards to honor one teacher from the lower, middle and upper schools. The professional development awards are designed to recognize a “commitment to a career in teaching, exemplify excellence in the classroom and influence other teachers by example.” The awardees utilized the funds in exciting and proactive ways. 20

Jan Weintraub has been a fixture in the Lower School since 2007, when she joined Norfolk Collegiate as the counselor. Students and parents have come to know her as a caring member of the Collegiate community, always working to promote a warm and caring community within the Lower School. Since being at Collegiate, Weintraub has created a guidance curriculum revolving around the Lower School’s values of respect, responsibility and safety, which are reinforced during classroom sessions throughout the year. Additionally, she has developed the Heart and Soul of Education Educator Institute, which is a professional development opportunity that allows teachers to focus on the educator as an individual to enhance personal self-awareness, quality of life and job satisfaction. Weintraub also
created a book chat series, Raising Happiness, which explored strategies and shared perspectives on raising happy children. She holds Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees from Old Dominion University. MIDDLE SCHOOL: Garrett Booker Though Garrett Booker has called Collegiate home for only two short years, he’s made an impact on his students by infusing fun into his classes. He’s committed to truly having students own their learning. As such, it is not unusual to see his students crafting out string maps of the continents in the Explore Room or creating political campaign posters in the classroom. It’s this collaboration with the students in a hands-on manner that has them singing his praises. In fact, last summer Booker attended a Duke School project-based learning workshop and presented his experience to faculty
peers at Collegiate. When not in the classroom, Booker, who holds Master of Arts from Old Dominion University and a Bachelor of Arts from University of Montana, could be seen coaching tennis for our Oaks or hiking a trail in the mountains. UPPER SCHOOL: Rebecca Zborowski Rebecca Zborowski is not only a Hokie alumna, but she’s also a favorite among students. Since joining Norfolk Collegiate in 2011, she has delved into community, taking on the role of Honor Council co-chair, Special Olympics Club advisor, as well as having coached the girls’ soccer team. She also assists in professional development by participating in the school’s advisory workgroup. The Upper School math teacher holds a Master’s of Science from Old Dominion University and a Bachelor’s of Science from Virginia Tech.
Board of Trustees Investment Committee The investment committee develops and recommends to the board for its approval policies that direct how the school will invest its endowment and what amount of return on investment the school will use in its yearly operating budget; monitors the investment portfolio’s return, including setting investment objectives and meeting with the personal advisor; and periodically reports to the board on the endowment’s performance, as per National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) guidelines. The Norfolk Collegiate School Annual Fund includes unrestricted gifts that enhance academic, athletic and extracurricular programs and provide necessities not funded by tuition dollars. We thank our committed Annual Fund donors who help accelerate our program to new limits.
Yearly Giving... The Annual Fund supports almost every aspect of a Norfolk Collegiate education. Parents volunteer, teachers guide students and give extra time, students give back to the community, alumni carry on the school’s traditions and tell great stories about their experiences, trustees provide governance and grandparents provide inspiration. All have established a strong tradition of support for Norfolk Collegiate School.

The Keryn & Ted Mathas Award for Professional Excellence The Keryn & Ted Mathas Award for Professional Excellence was established in 2012 and created to recognize Norfolk Collegiate faculty members who uphold the high standards in the Characteristics of Professional Excellence and demonstrate a strong commitment to Norfolk Collegiate, its students and its vision. The recipients are given a monetary award in recognition of their high standards and performance. The award may be used as the recipient sees fit. The recipients of the 2014 Mathas Awards were: • Ashley Billman, Upper School English teacher • Meg Dalrymple, Upper School English teacher • Claire Fornsel, Middle and Upper School science teacher

Mr. & Mrs. William W. King Jack Lynch (2021) Luke Lynch (2023)
• Michele Purrington, Upper School science teacher • Alan Stell, Middle School science teacher • Catherine Thomson, first-grade teacher
• Michelle McNaughton, third-grade teacher In addition to the Mathas Award for Professional Excellence, Ted and Keryn expanded their annual donation and created the Mathas Professional Development Grants to promote faculty growth in the areas outlined in the school’s Characteristics of Professional Excellence. The Mathas Grants provide funding for professional development activities that will increase our faculty’s expertise in current standards and best practices in their disciplines, project-based learning, technology integration, and other identified areas of focus for the school. The grants also support faculty summer projects that will transform a program or area of the curriculum in a significant manner that will be replicable across the wider school community. The first Mathas Professional Development Grants will be awarded in the 2014-2015 school year. Mathas is chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of New York Life Insurance Company, the largest mutual life insurer in the United States with more than $425 billion in assets under his management. Mathas is responsible for running all aspects of this Fortune 100 Company, including its domestic and international business operations. These awards allow Norfolk Collegiate School to recognize our faculty members who uphold the high standards in the Characteristics of Professional Excellence: • demonstrate a strong commitment to understanding and accommodating student individuality and needs; • a lifelong and passionate dedication to learning and to sharing that learning with colleagues and students alike; • a thirst for honor and integrity in all aspects of their lives; • a dynamic teaching method that embraces innovation and creativity; and • a personal mission to contribute to the school, its students and its vision. 2013-2014 Annual Philanthropy Report

Library Fund The library fund received $5,020 from the Lower School birthday book program to support the library media center. Purchases made possible by the 2013-2014 Library Fund include:
annual fund
• Hardback books for the Lower School library, each with a dedication plate honoring the birthday boy or girl. This is an ongoing tradition at the Lower School. • Digital books for the library collection which may be checked out and read online. • Due to its popularity with students and teachers, we continued our subscription to TumbleBooks, an online talking and animated book collection for elementary school students. The Lower School teachers requested this product for its engaging stories and accompanying curricular materials. The animated books can be shown in teachers’ classrooms on the SMART Boards® for an even more exciting literacy activity.

The Beazley Foundation Provides Matching Grant for iMac Lab ®
The Beazley Foundation generously provided a 1:1 matching grant that helped equip our Lower School computer learning lab with iMac® computers, which enabled us to expand our communication arts curriculum and prepare our students for the curriculum in the middle school. Through the generosity of an anonymous $15,000 donor, Norfolk Collegiate was able to complete the match and receive a $15,000 grant from the Beazley Foundation. In the spring of 2014, a new iMac® Learning Lab with 22 computers that are connected to an Apple TV® and SMART Board® was established at the Lower School. The iMac® Learning Lab is used by all students in grades K-5 as they progress through the communication arts curriculum. Using the iMac® lab, students at the Lower School learn how to use both the Apple® suite of productivity tools (including Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and iMovie) and the Microsoft suite of tools (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint). The iMac® Learning Lab has allowed our youngest students access to advanced technology tools that will prepare them well for their continued success at Norfolk Collegiate, in college and beyond. 40

Booster Club Our student-athletes’ success is due in part to the generosity of our Booster Club donors. In addition to providing essential new equipment, experiences and awards, the Booster Club’s goal is to boost the spirit of fans and players alike! With strong coaches, passionate fans and talented athletes, support from generous donors helps keep the Oak spirit strong.
annual fund
We made numerous purchases for our athletic program, thanks to the generosity of our donors. And, while we have strong coaches, passionate fans and talented athletes, our athletic program relies on the generosity of our Booster Club athletic donors.
A strong Booster Club allows us to: • Fund one-time special athletic purchases. Last year, with restricted donations, the Booster Club purchased strength and conditioning equipment, a new wrestling mat and new crew oars. • Celebrate and recognize teams and athletes who strive for and achieve excellence at our awards ceremonies. • Fund overnight travel for teams competing in state tournaments outside of our area - a benefit rarely offered at schools and one we feel is important to encourage competitive athletics.

Jefferson Challenge Norfolk Collegiate thanks the Class of 2014 who displayed the true spirit of the Jefferson Challenge by having 100% participation in the Annual Fund. Established in 2002, with help from Mr. A. Kenneth Scribner, Jr., the challenge is designed to promote a spirit of philanthropy among the senior class and encourage them to begin their legacy of giving back to Norfolk Collegiate School. The program consisted of several fundraisers, the senior T-shirt sale, movie nights, seminars and more to raise money for the Annual Fund. The Class of 2014 was the first class to raise over $1,000 for a seat in the Take-A-Seat campaign for the Meredith Center for the Arts.

Alumni Awards Breakfast On Thursday, April 3, hundreds of students, alumni and friends of the school, joined together for the annual Alumni Awards Breakfast, sponsored by Norfolk Collegiate’s Alumni Association, to celebrate Barron Segar ’80, Kathy Potts ’67 and Ryan Simpson ’05 for their contributions to the school and beyond in the Meredith Center for the Arts. Segar, the senior vice president of development for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award. The award is the alumni association’s highest honor for a graduate who through a value-oriented life has made a significant contribution to the betterment of society. Potts, who retired after more than 40 years at Norfolk Collegiate, was awarded the Alumni Service Award. The award honors a graduate who demonstrates exceptional leadership, devotion and service for the betterment of the school.
After accepting his award, Segar delivered a keynote speech that focused on how our Oaks could turn their passion into a lifelong career, as he did. It was through philanthropy that he realized one could really make a difference. Segar, whose accomplishments include being a founding board member of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, serving on the advisory board of Project Open Hand and being a lifetime member of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, to name a few, said that while he may be in responsible for budgets in the $500 million range, he doesn’t look at the dollar amount, “I look at the impact that I can make with it. I want my legacy to be helping people,” which he could do through his work.

Hit the Jackpot: Norfolk Collegiate’s Annual Auction & Casino Night May 3, 2014 “Hit the Jackpot: Norfolk Collegiate’s Annual Auction & Casino Night” was held on May 3 in the Watt-Baker and Middle School Gymnasiums. With the net proceeds of $127,090, we surpassed our goal by over $25,000 and had 262 guests join us for the festivities. The night was buzzing with excitement from guests enjoying casino games like blackjack, roulette, and a balloon challenge, in additional to over 300 silent auction items! Our live auction sales reached $88,000 and boasted packages such as a trip to Key West, “Live in New York…” and a sleepover in the Meredith Center!
This year, thanks to 33 donors who contributed more than $15,000 to the Fund-An-Item portion of the auction, funds were raised to purchase three 3D (three dimensional) printers and workstations for the lower, middle and upper schools. These printers are making their way into schools embracing 21st century learning. Just as ink jets and laser printers produce student-created documents and images, 3D printers transform student ideas into tangible, 3D objects that they can examine. 3D design and printing allows students to imagine, design and create original objects and to transform their two-dimensional drawings into physical realities.

Kate Pringle, Annual Fund & Special Events Manager
Most people do not realize that there are a number of ways to give other than cash. And many of these ways can be more efficient, more beneficial and have greater tax advantages than cash. It does not matter whether the gift is annual giving, capital campaign or endowment. The benefits and advantages are all the same. By utilizing any of the methods described here, you may find that you can give more and save more, which is a valuable combination for everyone.
Gifts of Securities A gift of stock you have owned for a number of years can have tax advantages for you. If you have owned the stock for more than a year and it has increased in value, its outright gift to Norfolk Collegiate School would mean a significant tax savings. You are not required to pay capital gains tax on the appreciation, so the actual cost to you may be less.
Life Income Gifts Stock, real estate and other investments that have been accumulated over a lifetime are often used as an ongoing source of income in retirement. One way to give is to transfer these investment assets to a “charitable remainder trust.” The income from the trust would still be paid to you or to a beneficiary for life or a term of years, after which the assets would be distributed outright to Norfolk Collegiate School. There are tax advantages to such an arrangement since you are making a gift to the school through a charitable trust. In addition, since the trust can sell the gifted assets and reinvest the proceeds in higher yielding assets without paying capital gains tax, the amount of income received by you or your beneficiary may actually increase through this method.
Gifts of Real Estate A residence, vacation home, rental property, farm acreage, or vacant lot may have appreciated in value through the years so that its sale would mean a sizeable capital gains tax. By making a gift of this property, you would avoid the capital gains tax and at the same time receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the property. It is also possible to structure the gift so that you or your beneficiaries can continue to use it during your lifetime.
Gifts of Life Insurance Life insurance offers two ways to provide a donor with a significant charitable deduction and benefit Norfolk Collegiate School at the same time. One way is to purchase a new policy and make the school the beneficiary. The second is to make a gift of a policy that you no longer need. To receive this deduction, you simply designate Norfolk Collegiate School as both the owner and the beneficiary of the life insurance policy. It is important to check with your life insurance agent for details.
Wills and Bequests Including Norfolk Collegiate School in your estate plan is a simple way to remember the school. It involves no loss of capital or income for you and may have positive tax benefits for your heirs. Many donors find that a bequest is a tremendous way to supplement their lifetime gifts to the school. Please note that you should contact your attorney, accountant, tax advisor or insurance agent for additional information or assistance in utilizing one or more of these techniques of giving. Michelle Adcock, director of development, is also available to offer more details on these options. 64
