Dear Norfolk Collegiate Community: The passing of another academic year never fails to excite. There are always new accomplishments and moments for which to celebrate and give thanks. The 2012-2013 academic year was no exception! Because of your generosity, we celebrated our 65th anniversary with the opening of the Meredith Center for the Arts – our largest classroom, possessing a professional theater, set design studio, communication arts suite, gallery, chorus room and more! In just a few short months, we quickly saw the transformational effect of this building on our community. With the opening of this building, a dream was realized for our school. At the same time, new dreams were being formed in the minds of our youngest Oaks who will benefit from the Meredith Center for years to come. Because of your generosity, we were able to continue to invest in our students by empowering our faculty and staff through professional development funds. Last year, teachers sharpened their skills at professional conferences, explored new curriculum and teaching strategies, and delved deeper into ever-changing technology and its impact on education. Because of your generosity, we were able to research 1:1 technology devices and their impact on classroom learning. We were able to visit other schools, conduct pilot studies on our own campus and ultimately decide that Norfolk Collegiate is on the road to becoming an iPad® school. Because of your generous support, each faculty member began the 2013-2014 school year with a new iPad® and the professional development tools to prepare for the roll out of the student iPad® program in 2014-2015. None of these developments would be possible without financial support from our community, especially those who give annually. In 2012-2013, our community once again showed its strength and commitment to Norfolk Collegiate and its mission as we saw a 27% increase in donations above the previous years. We cannot say enough how much we appreciate the unwavering support of our Norfolk Collegiate family. Through time, effort and financial support, you stand beside us as we educate future leaders and strive to give them the edge needed to succeed. Parents, alumni, faculty, staff, trustees and friends… You make Norfolk Collegiate a great place for our children. You have my sincerest thanks for supporting our vision. Respectfully,

Scott Kennedy Headmaster and President

Dear Norfolk Collegiate Community: Age 65 is a good time to retire, if you are a person. However, if you are an institution like Norfolk Collegiate, you are just hitting your stride. What a year it has been, with the opening of our new Meredith Center for the Arts building on our birthday March 1, 2013. Talk about an incredible birthday present! The new Meredith Center for the Arts is much more than a new building. As our Headmaster Scott Kennedy likes to say it is also our biggest classroom. But it is even more than that. It is truly the embodiment of the spirit of the Norfolk Collegiate generosity. This generosity is a shining symbol of the love you have for our school. For 65 years, a spirit of giving, of generosity, of philanthropy has become the DNA of our community. We see this in the 100% participation by our Board of Trustees to the Annual Fund. We see in the continual support of our alumni. We see this in 100% of our senior class contributing to the Jefferson Challenge. And we see this in the passion and dedication from our current parents. So please let me thank you, our devoted supporters for your generosity. Without your giving spirit Norfolk Collegiate would not have achieved the success it did last year, in the classroom, on the fields and courts, and now on the wonderful stage in the Hackney Theater. It is often said that after age 65 people are in their golden years. For Norfolk Collegiate, we really do feel we are in our golden years thanks to your generosity. Sincerely, Gary D. Bonnewell Chairman of the Board

Meredith Center for the Arts Grand Opening Norfolk Collegiate officially opened the new Meredith Center for the Arts on Friday, March 1, 2013 and the response has been incredible. The new building was dedicated in honor of Peter and Susan Meredith and their family, in honor of their continued leadership and generosity. The Meredith Center for the Arts was the final step of the Rings of Life Campaign and has proven to be an opportunity to better the community in and around Norfolk Collegiate. “In the final stage of our Rings of Life initiative, the opening of this wonderful facility, we can see how each student, each teacher and Norfolk Collegiate as a whole has come full circle,” said Gary Bonnewell, President of the Board of Trustees. The Center for the Arts, which was the product of sincere generosity and the hard work of many, offers a venue for cultural events and brings a wonderful addition to the Norfolk Collegiate campus and to the community of Norfolk. The facility can be broken down by the numbers - 46,245 bricks, 93 cement trucks, 687 chandelier crystals, more than 420 seats, and more than 480 days of work but it became much more than as the school year progressed. The stage came alive with the first musical performance, Little Shop of Horrors, the Communications Arts Suites filled with budding journalists, designers and videographers, set designs were constructed in the design studio and the walls of the galleries showcased the art of our talented students. In the fall of 2013, Norfolk Collegiate formally presented the named spaces within the new building and unveiled a donor wall that reflects the generosity of our donors from all three phases of the Rings of Life Campaign:

• Meredith Center for the Arts, named in honor of Peter Meredith, Sr., and Susan Meredith and their family. • Hackney Theater, named for Jo Melchor Hackney & John H. Hackney, Jr. • Franklin Lobby, dedicated in honor of the Franklin Family. • Keller Walkway, which leads from the Upper School to the Meredith Center and was given in honor of Robert R. Keller ’06 and Marcus W. Keller ’08. • Wright Family Courtyard outside of the Meredith Center, given by John and Denise Wright in honor of Abby Taylor Wright ’17. • Beazley Foundation Communication Arts Suite, given by The Beazley Foundation. • Leanzo Set Design Studio, given by the Leanzo Family. • Hill Coat Check Room, a Gift from Brick, Louise, Brick Jr., and Mimi Hill, Class of 2014. • William W. King Board Room, named in honor of former headmaster Will King, who served from 1988-2008.

Richard & Shaune Meredith Family Wrestling Endowment It is always a welcomed surprise when a donor approaches the school and wants to make a transformational gift that will impact our students for years to come. When Richard ’74 and Shaune Meredith reached out to us explaining their interest in supporting the wrestling program, we were pleasantly surprised. Upon visiting the school to explore the options of giving, the Meredith family assumed they would be making a one-time cash gift to the program, but as Shaune explained, “after exploring the option of an endowment, we realized it was the best decision. It spreads the gift over a longer period of time, and allows others to contribute to the fund, which only increases the gift to the program each year.” An endowment fund is a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding. Endowment assets are invested, and each year a portion of the value of the fund is paid out to support the fund’s purpose, and any earnings in excess of this distribution are used to build the fund’s market value. An endowment fund allows donors to make a significant impact on the landscape of an organization by creating a scholarship or fund that will last forever. When Richard ’74 and Shaune Meredith established the Richard and Shaune Meredith Family Wrestling Endowment, that is exactly what they did. As an alumnus (Richard), donors and alumni parents, the Meredith family created a $25,000 endowment to promote the perpetuity and success of the wrestling program, in which all three of their sons participated. The Norfolk Collegiate wrestling program is near to the family’s heart, as Richard was on the first NCS wrestling team during the fall of 1972. His parents, Peter and Susan Meredith helped pay for the first wrestling mat. Shaune explains her family’s experience with wrestling as one of excitement, honor and gratitude. “All of our boys played team sports, but wrestling became the sport each one of them benefitted from the most. I had not known wrestling before our boys donned the dreaded singlet and as a mom it can be a rather terrifying experience to watch your child take his knocks on the mat. And as every wrestler remembers his or her first “pin,” as a parent, I also remember the pride when your son loses a match and goes over to congratulate his opponent knowing that he is growing into a mature young man.” Richard and Shaune created the endowment with the hope that wrestling will always be an option for Norfolk Collegiate students. They see the sport as an excellent opportunity for kids of all sizes and weights to compete with comparable kids, teaching a discipline that is necessary during adolescence. This fund will be used to provide direct support to the NCS wrestling program, with the highest priority being to attract, retain and recruit outstanding coaching staff. To learn more about this endowment fund, contribute to an endowment fund or start an endowment fund of your own, please contact the Development Office at 757.480.2348.

Lolita Teresa Kraft, John Hackney, Jr., Paige Solomon, Scott Kennedy, Nance Corriveau

Jo Melchor Hackney & John H. Hackney, Jr. Memorial Endowment Fund Award The prestigious Jo Melchor Hackney and John H. Hackney, Jr. Memorial Endowment Fund Award was presented to Ms. Nance Corrvieau, Mrs. Lolita Teresa Kraft and Mrs. Paige Solomon, for use in the 2012-2013 school year, in recognition of their dedication and excellence in teaching at Norfolk Collegiate School. Mr. John H. Hackney Jr., former trustee of Norfolk Collegiate School, has been a member of the NCS community since 1984, when his granddaughter, Cara Paige Oxenham, entered first grade. He and his wife, Jo Melchor Hackney, who passed away in 2003, developed an appreciation for the small class sizes, dedicated teachers and high quality facilities at Norfolk Collegiate School. Mr. Hackney established the Jo Melchor Hackney and John H. Hackney Jr. Memorial Endowment Fund in 2005 to provide three annual merit awards to honor one teacher from the lower, middle and upper schools. The professional development awards are designed to recognize a “commitment to a career in teaching, exemplify excellence in the classroom and influence other teachers by example. The awardees utilized the funds in exciting and proactive ways. 20

2012-2013 Award Winners NANCE CORRIVEAU During the 2012-2013 school year, Nance Corriveau served as our Middle School Art teacher and chair of the art department. Nance spent a week at Squam Lake for an artist’s retreat and used the opportunity to take several art classes throughout the week that focused on using your inner “self” to get creative. The classes taught ways to help students channel their own inspiration. She also took a photography class where she learned by quietly observing and being present in the ordinary moments with a camera, noticing more of life. She explored ways to show students how one can find the beauty in the routine and the meaning in the mundane and capture that through the lens. She focused on concepts such as light qualities, automatic and manual shooting, manipulating aperture, shutter speed and IOS. LOLITA TERESA KRAFT Lolita Teresa Kraft is a second-grade teacher at the Lower School and used her award to attend The Reading and Writing Project at The Teachers College in Columbia University. It is one of the world’s premier providers of professional development in the teaching of writing and reading. Lolita was able to bring both the writing and reading workshop back to the Lower School for implementation. In the past, language arts programs were one-sizefits-all basals, and now children are encouraged to read books based on their skill level and to write as a “real” writer by exploring their feelings. This programmatic change now allows students to have more time to write and read for longer periods of time, cycling through the stages of the writing process and receiving the feedback that is essential to student growth. PAIGE SOLOMON Paige Solomon is an Upper School History teacher with a passion for the Civil War. She used the award to help her complete her independent study in graduate school last summer. With this support, she was able to study blockade running in the Chesapeake Bay during the Civil War. Paige is currently completing her master’s degree in history from Old Dominion University and her thesis is on the social history of the Eastern Shore of Virginia during the Civil War. Growing her expertise in this field has proven to be beneficial in the classroom and to the greater community, as Paige led a Civil War lecture series, entitled “Civil War 150,” in the Meredith Center for the Arts, which was open to the public.

The A. Kenneth Scribner, Jr. & Sue Faulkner Scribner Headmaster’s Seat of Excellence Endowment: Support that Lasts Forever. The A. Kenneth Scribner, Jr. and Sue Faulkner Scribner Headmaster’s Seat of Excellence Endowment, established in May 2005, provides our school the opportunity to recruit, retain and reward “master teachers” who enhance the core of Norfolk Collegiate’s intellectual community. Through this fund, we are able to ensure that our students are learning in the most innovative and engaging settings from the most qualified and collaborative faculty members. And, we are able to recognize these outstanding faculty members for their contributions. During the 2012-2013 school year, this endowment allowed us to recruit several highly qualified faculty members and funded a national search that resulted in recruiting a highly qualified Dean of Students, Nicole Weyer.

NICOLE M. WEYER After conducting a nationwide search for a new Dean of Students, Norfolk Collegiate was excited to announce the appointment of Nicole M. Weyer. Nicole comes to us from the Interlochen Center for the Arts, an arts boarding high school in Interlochen, Michigan, where she has served as Dean of Students since 2007, overseeing the Arts Academy of 470 students and Arts Camp program of 800 high school participants. She previously held student life positions with Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, the Cascade School in California and Landmark College in Vermont. She has a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Minnesota and a masters of international and intercultural management form the School of International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. As Dean of Students for Norfolk Collegiate School, Nicole is the leader in developing and implementing disciplinary policies and procedures and works directly with faculty and staff to manage aspects of student life, including extracurricular activities, assemblies, leadership initiatives, community service and special programming.

“There are many reasons I give to the annual fund. As an alum, it’s my way to let the school know how much I appreciated and valued the education I received. As a parent, because I know my kids are the recipients of an exceptional lower school program. And as a faculty member, I can’t think of a better way to let our community know how much I value the school and support our mission in what I do every day.” Anne Claywell ‘88, School Counselor Mr. & Mrs. Stricker C. The Beazley Foundation Provides iPads for Faculty ®

annual giving

In June 2013, Norfolk Collegiate received a generous grant from The Beazley Foundation that allowed us to move forward with a transformational 1:1 Faculty iPad® initiative. On opening day of the 2013-2014 school year, 70 teachers were equipped with the portable tablets thanks to the $15,000 grant. In January 2013, Norfolk Collegiate announced its intent to launch a comprehensive iPad program and distinguish it as an iPad® school. The use of iPads® is one of the steps that Norfolk Collegiate is taking to promote innovative instruction through incorporating technology-enhanced curricula. ®

This grant allowed us to provide our faculty members with a full year of training and professional development before the school rolls out a 1:1 iPad® program for grades 6-12 in the 2014-2015 school year. In addition to providing the actual devices, the Beazley Foundation also funded components of our professional development activities. In August, Norfolk Collegiate hosted a workshop by Jonathan Martin, a nationally-known leader in 21st Century educational trends. With more than 15 years of independent school experience, Martin discussed ways in which Norfolk Collegiate teachers could share their ideas and collaborate with other teachers to bring more innovative learning to their students through connectivity. “Our kids are different and changing,” said Martin. “They are experiencing a world that is more connected and more plugged in. Our kids expect a different educational experience.” Charlene Loope, director of instructional technology and communication arts, explains, “We have already seen the transformation of what this mobile device will allow the faculty to do and what it will mean for professional growth and learning at NCS,” said Loope. Just one day after distributing the iPads®, “we saw how we could progress so quickly. We are no longer just part of the conversation, but now we are part of the movement,” she continued. “That was the most inspiring part.” We sincerely thank the Beazley Foundation for its foresight and enthusiasm in bringing applicable technology to the hands of our students and faculty members. The purpose of the Beazley Foundation is to “receive, maintain and administer assets in perpetuity exclusively for educational, charitable and religious purposes and to use and apply the whole or any part of the principal and income there from for such purposes either directly or by contributions to other organizations.” 2012-2013 Annual Philanthropy Report

Library Fund The Library Fund received $5,486 from the Lower School birthday book program to support the library media center. Purchases made possible by the 2012-2013 Library Fund include: • Hardback books for the Lower School library, each with a dedication plate honoring the birthday boy or girl. This is an ongoing tradition at the Lower School. • Digital books for the library collection which may be checked out and read online. • Due to its popularity with students and teachers, we continued our subscription to TumbleBooks, an online talking and animated book collection for elementary school students. The Lower School teachers requested this product for its engaging stories and accompanying curricular materials. The animated books can be shown in teachers’ classrooms on the SMART Boards for an even more exciting literacy activity. • Apple TV’s for all of the Lower School teachers, allowing them to wirelessly project images and sounds from their new iPads® onto the SMART Boards in their rooms. Students can also project their work and projects, created on student iPads®, onto the SMART Boards in their classrooms and library.

Booster Club Last year was an amazing year for Norfolk Collegiate athletics. We welcomed our new Athletic Director, Mary Peccie, launched a comprehensive strength and conditioning program and introduced strength and conditioning coach Dan Nichols, and boosted the spirit of fans and players alike. We also made numerous purchases for our athletic program, thanks to the generosity of our donors. And, while we have strong coaches, passionate fans and talented athletes, our athletic program relies on the generosity of our Booster Club athletic donors. 48

A strong Booster Club allows us to: • Fund one-time special athletic purchases. Last year, with restricted donations, the Booster Club purchased a new NCS bus, strength and conditioning equipment, a crew boat and sail boat. • Celebrate and recognize teams and athletes who strive for and achieve excellence at our awards ceremonies. • Fund overnight travel for teams competing in state tournaments outside of our area - a benefit rarely offered at schools and one we feel is important to encourage competitive athletics at NCS.

Jefferson Challenge Norfolk Collegiate thanks the Class of 2013 who displayed the true spirit of the Jefferson Challenge by having 100% participation in the Annual Fund. Established in 2002, with help from Mr. A. Kenneth Scribner, Jr., the challenge is designed to promote a spirit of philanthropy among the senior class and encourage them to begin their legacy of giving back to Norfolk Collegiate School. The program includes seminars, lunches and lessons and to thank them for their participation, all seniors were invited on the American Rover for a day cruise.

Additional Ways to Give to Norfolk Collegiate School Gifts of Securities A gift of stock you have owned for a number of years can have tax advantages for you. If you have owned the stock for more than a year and it has increased in value, its outright gift to Norfolk Collegiate School would mean a significant tax savings. You are not required to pay capital gains tax on the appreciation, so the actual cost to you may be less. Life Income Gifts Stock, real estate and other investments that have been accumulated over a lifetime are often used as an ongoing source of income in retirement. One way to give is to transfer these investment assets to a “charitable remainder trust. The income from the trust would still be paid to you or to a beneficiary for life or a term of years, after which the assets would be distributed outright to Norfolk Collegiate School. There are tax advantages to such an arrangement since you are making a gift to the school through a charitable trust. In addition, since the trust can sell the gifted assets and reinvest the proceeds in higher yielding assets without paying capital gains tax, the amount of income received by you or your beneficiary may actually increase through this method. Gifts of Real Estate A residence, vacation home, rental property, farm acreage, or vacant lot may have appreciated in value through the years so that its sale would mean a sizeable capital gains tax. By making a gift of this property, you would avoid the capital gains tax and at the same time receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the property. It is also possible to structure the gift so that you or your beneficiaries can continue to use it during your lifetime. Gifts of Life Insurance Life insurance offers two ways to provide a donor with a significant charitable deduction and benefit Norfolk Collegiate School at the same time. One way is to purchase a new policy and make the school the beneficiary. The second is to make a gift of a policy that you no longer need. To receive this deduction, you simply designate Norfolk Collegiate School as both the owner and the beneficiary of the life insurance policy. It is important to check with your life insurance agent for details. Wills and Bequests Including Norfolk Collegiate School in your estate plan is a simple way to remember the school. It involves no loss of capital or income for you and may have positive tax benefits for your heirs. Many donors find that a bequest is a tremendous way to supplement their lifetime gifts to the school. Please note that you should contact your attorney, accountant, tax advisor or insurance agent for additional information or assistance in utilizing one or more of these techniques of giving. Michelle Adcock, director of development, is also available to offer more details on these options. 68
