This year’s Summer Under the Oak is full of new and exciting opportunities for our campers. Our mission is to provide a safe, fun and enriching experience for all students. We invite you to review all of our programs, which are now categorized by academic achievement, the arts and athletics. As you peruse this guide, you’ll notice more options for full-day and half-day programs. Many of the academic programs are half day during the morning hours and can be paired with an afternoon program to create a full and exciting week for your camper. In the academic achievement center, we have added fabulous opportunities to give your child a great summer experience while still improving his academic skills. Whether you want to give your child a jump start for next year, learn about marine life in the Lafayette River or complete his high school chemistry in six weeks, these are all possible through the academic center. Is your child curious about developing a video game or interested in designing and programming his own robot? Our hands-on experiential learning may be a great option. We also have we have theater and choir camps for students of all ages at our Meredith Center for the Arts, complete with a variety of new, hands-on art classes each week. In the Center for Athletics, we are offering a plethora of experiences such as fishing, hiking and ultimate sports. In the upcoming pages, you’ll find all of the program descriptions with dates, times and ages. Additionally, our programs take learning outside of the classroom and challenge students in other exciting areas such as robotics, chess and science exploration. Center for the arts Hands-on art classes, theater and chorus take the spotlight in this center, with creativity at every turn! With projects ranging from pottery to theater camp, you are sure to find something to tap into your creative side this summer. All of these camps are located at Norfolk Collegiateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Upper School campus.

Center for athletics Summer is a great time to run around outside, try a new sport and improve your athletic skills before the competitive season. Programs range from day hiking to team sports such as soccer, lacrosse and volleyball!

Middle School Study SkillsAM

Rising Second and Third Grade Virginia History Digital Scrapbook Students will integrate technology into the exploration of local historical sites. While visiting the historical sites, campers will engage their own creativity in making a scrapbook using friendly, digital apps. There also will be daily field trips and students are allowed to bring their own device for use during the camp. Students will need to bring lunch, snacks and drinks daily. Rising Grades 3-5 Cost: $300

Make and Take Games What better way is there to learn and to keep skills fresh than by having fun? Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what Make & Take It Games is all about! Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be making game boards and other game pieces to use all summer long. Each camper will get a variety of games and rules to suit his/her level of skill. By the end of the week, he/she will be armed with games to practice math, reading and spelling the whole summer, so come and join us! Rising Grades 2-3 I Cost: $150

Creative Writing

Magic Camp

Learn to be a creative writer by tasting different flavors of ice cream, making sandcastles and visiting the zoo. Students will draw, illustrate and explore different types of writing with all of these activities. Publish your writing on the computer and share with your family at an endof-the-week writing celebration.

Your child can be a magician! Magic is a wonderful hobby that can build self-esteem as children have fun learning to perform great illusions. Each child receives individual attention and learns at his or her pace. On Friday, there will be a big show where all of the children perform the magic that they’ve learned at camp. Bring family and friends to enjoy your child’s magic performance for a live audience. No previous magic experience is needed. The class is led by award-winning professional magician Rob Westcott!

Graphing for Young Scientists Young scientists will hone their math-related data graphing skills, by doing simple, fun, hands-on experiments to collect meaningful data through the scientific method. They will interpret their experimental results with data analysis and graphing techniques like scientists. Activities will include measurement, decimals, rounding, arithmetic mean, variation, precision, numerical scales, bar graphs and line graphs. It’s sure to be a great week full of nifty experiments and progress with academic skills. This program will be led by John Burnham in his FAMOUS science lab. Rising Grades 3-5 I Cost: $150

BrickHeadZ’ Under the Sea Adventure BrickHeadZ’ Under the Sea Adventure Camp will have campers learning about coral reefs; while building robotic models of a fish, manta ray, scuba diver and sea turtle featuring moving parts with motors and sensors! Using the LEGO® Education WeDo™ drag-and-drop software builder, students will learn how to bring their models to life through the use of laptops. Each class ends with a free-build session to promote creativity. Campers also will be working collaboratively to build a coral reef seascape. Rising Grades 1-3 I Cost: $175

Coding Camp Learn to code visually! Create interactive games, design characters, generate music and create cool art with Brenda Pidgeon, our own coding specialist. Collaborate and work with teammates to brainstorm, debug and effectively problem solve. Create your own storyline animations and sounds while you build a portfolio of games to share with friends. Rising Grades 2-3 Cost: $150

Mad Science: Super Science Sampler Camp

Kick start your summer reading requirement under the guidance of a certified teacher. Read and discuss your required summer reading and work on your school’s assigned reading project. We will also learn comprehension strategies, participate in fun language arts activities, and engage in group discussions. Students may bring in e-readers to use during independent reading activities.

Explore five of the coolest branches of science on your way to becoming a certified Jr. Mad Scientist. Discover how birds fly and learn what an owl eats as we dissect owl pellets in bird biology; build towering structures and ingenious contraptions via engineering; go crazy while you construct catapults, pulleys and levers in machine mania; stir-up a crazy concoction that becomes sidewalk chalk and create a chromatography T-shirt in chemistry; then do a double take as you learn how optics really work in lights and sights!

Mad Science: Eureka! Inventors Camp Campers will overcome a series of challenges using basic materials, simple machines, tips from famous inventors and the most important of all – their mind! With a little ingenuity, children will create catapults and forts, construct working light sticks to take home and assemble a set of circuits with batteries and light bulbs. While Thomas Edison said “invention is 10 percent inspiration and 90 percent perspiration,” this camp is 100 percent fun! Rising Grades 2-6 I Cost: $175

Chess (Beginner and Intermediate) Championship Chess presents a systematic, fun way to build skills during instruction while students play chess. Mad Science: Red Hot Robots Join us for a week of fun with amazing robots. You’ll even build your own programmable robot! In this week of camp, learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with super cool, red-hot robots. Experiment with sound-sensing robots, line-tracking robots, amphibious robots and robots that even play soccer! Discover the science of circuits and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. Use your skills to build your very own working robot to take home with you! Rising Grades 3-6 I Cost: $225

This program will focus on celebrating the efforts of The Elizabeth River Project, partners and citizens that continue to improve the health of the Lafayette River. Led by Robin Dunbar, Elizabeth River Project’s education director, this river camp will celebrate the Lafayette’s history through fun, hands-on activities. Campers will learn how they, too, are part of the river’s story. This fun-filled camp will include investigative, exploratory activities, eco-art, stewardship, real-life science and a day sail on the schooner American Rover (weather permitting). Activities will include science, history, math, art and reading. River campers will make a connection to their home river and discover how they can be part of the Living Lafayette. Intro to Robotics MINDSTORM EV3 BrickHeadZ’ Intro to MINDSTORM® EV3 camp combines classic LEGO® building with the world of robotics, using motors, sensors and software. You’ll learn how to design and program your LEGO® ‘bots that can perform all kinds of tasks! MINDSTORM® software lets you place icons in sequence to design the commands you want. It’s easy to learn and teaches basic programming logic. This camp is a fun and challenging introduction to the world of robotics for the LEGO® enthusiast! Rising Grades 4-6 3, 8:30-11:30 a.m.

MINDSTORMS EV3 Space Challenge Using motors, sensors and software, BrickHeadZ’ Space Challenge Camp combines classic LEGO® building with the world of robotics. Campers will learn about real life space exploration, learn how to apply and creatively adapt programming and problem-solving skills to design and build MINDSTORMS® EV3 robots to solve different space challenges. Students will have the opportunity to explore, plan and develop around three fundamental challenges that NASA engineers and scientists are working to solve; including how to ensure humans can survive in space, how humans create energy in space, and how robots can help humans explore space. This camp is a fun and challenging and will make your imagination blast off! *Must have prior MINDSTORMS® EV3 programming experience. Rising Grades 4-6 Cost: $175

Rising sixth, seventh and eighth grades Summer Reading Come, read and discuss your summer reading projects. We will learn and practice more comprehension strategies, participate in helpful group activities and engage in book talks. We will set individual goals at the beginning of the week and there will be an end-of-the-week celebration. iPad® Introduction Students will be introduced to five of the main creative apps that we use in the classroom and explore the many uses of these apps. After creating products in all five apps, we will put the productions together. We will also create folders for core subjects, which will be used to organize work during the school year. The final product will be

showcased in a Google e-portfolio, which campers will build during the last two days. What a great way to become more familiar with the iPad® and how it will be used in the classrooms. Rising Grades 6-8 Cost: $150

App Smashing App Smashing is taking one app and combining it with others to create a higher quality product. Prior experience with various apps is not required, but it is helpful. We will create “In Three Words,” “I Have a Dream,” and “Fairy Tales in Six Words” productions, combining Green Screen with the Tellagami, Explain Everything, Video filming and iPrompt apps. Norfolk Presents!

Community Service Camp

Using the Internet, library and in-town field trips, we will research and explore the “best spots” to visit in Norfolk. Using our iPad® to take photo and video footage, we will create a documentary, or series of movie trailers, showing the highlights of living in Norfolk. Students will research, storyboard the script, use Green Screen, work on photography and video skills, as well as editing and app-smashing techniques. The footage will be combined with and loaded into various apps, and our final day will consist of popcorn and a showing of our movie!

This camp is designed to give each student an opportunity to earn volunteer hours whether it is for school or just for the enjoyment of helping others. Under the leadership of Anne Curtis and Cathy White, students will volunteer their time with a different organization each day. Students will receive 20 hours of community service for each week completed, and will need to bring a lunch, snacks and drinks!

CPR Certification Campers will learn how to perform proper CPR, how to use an automatic external defibrillator and what to do in an emergency situation. Knowing how to perform CPR is a must for any medical field, if you are considering being a lifeguard or working with young children or the elderly individuals. CPR is just good to know how to do. The program will be coordinated by Diego Fama, who has been an emergency medical technician for more than 34 years. He is a retired fire captain from the Virginia Beach Fire Department with 31 years of service. In 1996, he started teaching emergency medicine at Tidewater Community College as an adjunct instructor and has been a CPR instructor for more than 15 years. Ages 15 and up I Cost: $50
