Large purchases, whether you are investing in a vehicle, home or home improvement project, are not to be taken lightly. Before making significant financial commitments, consumers should exercise their due diligence and prepare for such purchases as much as possible. Many people use credit when making large purchases. That may entail using a credit card or financing a purchase via an installment loan rather than purchasing an item outright. To make buying on credit as consumer-friendly as possible, men and women must ensure they are in good financial standing, which can help them get lower interest rates so they pay less for an item than they might if their finances were not in the best of shape. • Get your credit score. A credit score, also known as a FICO® score, is a number between 300 and 850 that is calculated based on your payment history, outstanding balances, length of credit history, new credit, and types of credit. Lenders look at this credit score to determine how great a risk you present as a borrower. Whenever you use credit to make a purchase or apply for a loan, your credit score will be checked. The higher the credit score, the more attractive you are to lenders and the lower your interest rate figures to be. • Check for credit report inaccuracies. If your FICO score seems low, there may be mistakes on your credit reports. Request a copy of your credit report. Look over the reports thoroughly and address any mistakes immediately. • Make sure you have a credit history.

In an effort to avoid debt, some people never apply for credit cards or other lines of credit. But having no credit history can hurt you, even if you never accumulated any debt. For example, when applying for a mortgage, you will be asked to show at least three lines of credit (any combination of credit cards, student loans, car loans, and so on) that have been active within the past 12 to 24 months, according to the resource Credit Sesame. If you have no credit history, apply for a few credit cards and use them regularly, paying off the balance in full each month to maintain active credit and improve your score. However, do not try to establish lines of credit too close to when you’re making a large purchase, as doing so within six months of making your purchase can temporarily lower your credit score. • Keep credit utilization within a safe zone. In determining your credit score, credit agencies will look at credit utilization, among other things. Credit utilization is the ratio of your credit card balances to credit limits as listed on your credit report. If your limit is $1,000 and you have a $300 balance, your credit utilization is 30 percent. To determine your credit utilization, simply divide your credit card balance by your credit limit then multiply by 100. The lower the credit utilization, the better. Pay down debt to help reduce utilization. Consumers ready to make large purchases should factor in credit scores and attractiveness as buyers before they start shopping around.

New Norfolk ‘Tree Bud’ Program Trees are an important part of Norfolk’s landscape. A community donation “Tree Bud” program was started in 2015 to allow people to contribute $2 on their water bill to purchase, plant and care for trees in Norfolk. “Trees provide beauty, shade, windbreak and wildlife habitat in our community. We started the Tree Bud program to give people an opportunity to help sustain the community tree population in Norfolk. It’s especially important to plant trees in light of the possible infestation of the emerald ash borer and subsequent loss of ash trees in Norfolk,” said Norfolk Mayor Sue Fuchtman. People who are interested in adding a $2 donation to their water bills for trees can check a box on their bill that says “Sign up to add $2 charge to each water bill for trees.” Two dollars will then be added to each bi-monthly bill and donated to the tree program until the person lets the City water billing office know they are no longer interested in participating. Those who are interested in having the $2 added to their water bills to go toward trees can also fill out an online form at ci.norfolk.ne.us/treebuds.htm or fill out a form at the Norfolk City Administration Building at 309 North 5th Street. They can also call 402-844-2018 to sign up. One-time donations for trees

will also be accepted if brought in or sent separately to the City Administration Building. Groups are also encouraged to donate trees as part of their community projects. “The donations will go towards purchasing, planting and caring for trees on city owned and controlled property. Our hope is to keep trees as a vital part of Norfolk,” said Pat Mrsny, City of Norfolk Parks Superintendent. According to the Nebraska Forestry Service, trees lower heating and air conditioning costs, prevent erosion, reduce storm water runoff, increase property values and make communities more inviting. For more information about the Tree Bud program, call City of Norfolk Communications Director Diane Becker at 402-844-2034.

Weekend Renovation Projects Some home renovation projects require the expertise of professionals, but there also are many ways for homeowners to improve their homes without hiring a pro or spending too much money. The following are a handful of DIY renovation projects homeowners can tackle in a typical weekend. • Closet conversion: Ample closet space is a big plus for home buyers, but upon moving into a new home, many homeowners may find they don’t need as much closet space as they initially thought. Guest room walk-in closets, in particular, may prove to be underutilized resources. Such closets often come with built-in shelving, and therefore, they make ideal spaces to convert to mini home offices or study areas for kids. Installing an extra shelf to serve as a desk area for remote working or homework stations and you will have a fully functioning workspace. • Accent wall: Accent walls can liven up a room by breaking the color pattern of the walls in the room. Accent walls also can be used to divert attention on a

particular design element in a room, such as a painting or an elaborate wall furnishing. Painting an accent wall can give a room an entirely new look. • Driveway: If weather permits, repaving an asphalt driveway can be an ideal weekend project, especially if an existing driveway has endured its fair share of wear and tear. • Storage and shelving: Much like some homes come with an abundance of storage areas, others fall short of homeowners’ or apartment dwellers’ needs. Adding some shelving or finding some new furniture that can serve double duty as storage areas is a weekend project that can help clear up some space. • Art: If the rooms and hallways in your home are bare or in need of new looks but your budget is tight, try your hand at spicing things up by creating some of your own paintings. Parents can encourage kids to create their own colorful masterpieces. Frame the finished works and hang them on the wall and enjoy your homemade “art gallery.”

Easy And Budget-friendly Ways To Add Curb Appeal Curb appeal can help a home get noticed in a bustling real estate market. Curb appeal also can contribute to the aesthetics of a neighborhood for residents who plan to stay put, and many homeowners feel an attractive exterior is just as important as a comfortable interior. Homeowners do not have to spend a fortune to improve the curb appeal of their homes. With these strategies, anyone’s home can take on a more appealing look.

Clean up

A messy, untamed front yard can detract from a perfectly acceptable home. Cleaning up your yard and home’s exterior is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to give the place a makeover. Cut back overgrown shrubs, plants and trees. Make sure the front door is clearly visible and that any walkways are edged and accessible. Store garbage pails behind a barrier and keep trash out of sight. Store children’s toys in the backyard rather than strewn across the front lawn. These simple steps can improve curb appeal instantly.

Spruce up the lawn

A well-manicured lawn can go a long way to making a home more appealing. If

your thumb is anything but green, hire a professional lawn and garden service to help you establish a lush, green lawn.

Dress to impress

illuminate a walkway. Few people enjoy approaching a dark home, and outdoor lighting can ensure your property always is well-lit. Remember, curb appeal is

applicable both day and night. Improving on curb appeal can make a difference in how others view your home.

The entryway to a home is the first thing visitors will see. Be sure the front door and entryway are in good repair. A pop of color can’t hurt, either. If you do not like the idea of painting the door a vivid hue, dress it up with a colorful wreath or another decorative accent. Carry your interior design style to the outdoors as well. Welcoming accents, such as cushioned chairs or potted plants, also add curb appeal. Consider painting house numbers on a terra-cotta pot and filling it with plants. The pot will be decorative and functional.

Rely on symmetry

Symmetry is pleasing to the eye and easy to arrange. Use it to frame your entryway and throughout your property. Symmetrical use of lighting fixtures, plants, trees, and decorative items really can have an impact.

Don’t forget lighting

Outdoor lighting adds appeal and safety to a property. Use lighting to accent a special landscaping feature or to

Exterior Lighting Improves The Safety And Appearance Of A Home When drafting a to-do list for home improvements that can increase home value and appeal, several renovations may be atop homeowners’ lists. While kitchen or bathroom remodels may be popular renovations, homeowners also should consider outdoor lighting schemes that can make homes safer and more alluring. Outdoor lighting serves various purposes. Such lighting can draw attention to more impressive parts of a property. In addition, such lighting can improve security and deter criminals. To get started, homeowners should first examine the exteriors of their homes and make note of existing lighting and where improvements can be made. If you’re not sure where to begin, speak with an electrician or a landscape designer, each of whom can offer suggestions on lighting and which options are the best fit for your particular property. Next, you’ll want to consider efficiency and function. The United States Department of Energy suggests incorporating energy-efficient lighting, including energy-saving LED bulbs or fluorescent lights, into your plans. Timers and other automatic controls can prevent waste by turning lights on only when they are needed. Solar lights can be used as accent lights, further saving energy. Beauty

When addressing aesthetics, think about the appeal of an accented landscape. Include lights to frame the front door and call attention to certain elements, such as decorative trees or water features. Use lights to light up deck stairways or to accent planters. Speak with a lighting professional

about how to position lights to cover the most territory in the most attractive way possible. Safety

Safety is an important consideration when improving a home. Lighting can help illuminate potential hazards or draw attention to borders or property boundaries. Navigating in the dark can be treacherous, so put lights along pathways and near pools or spas. Be sure that lights will clearly mark other walkways around your home, such as those leading from doors to the yard or from the garage to where trash and recycling pails are kept. If a design element such as a bridge over a water feature or a particular ornamental tree or shrub is difficult to navigate in the dark, use lights to improve visibility.

Security

Added security is another reason to install more exterior lighting. Dark homes are attractive to burglars. Eliminate dark corners by lighting up areas where thieves may be able to gain access to your home. This includes areas near doorways and ground-level windows. Install motion-sensor lights in such areas so you are not wasting energy. Lighting may not only deter human intruders, but also it can scare away animals. A raccoon, skunk or opossum may think twice about hanging around your home when your property is bathed in a spotlight. Revamping exterior lighting elements can improve the safety and the look of a home.

Before you price out siding with contractors, estimate how much you will need for your house. Consumer Reports suggests multiplying the height times the width of each rectangular section of your house in feet, going by what you can measure from the ground, to determine their areas. Multiply the approximate height and width of gables and other triangular surfaces and divide each total by two. Then add all the totals. To allow for waste, don’t subtract for doors, windows or other areas that won’t be covered. Finally, divide the total square footage by 100 to estimate how many squares of siding you will need. A square represents 100 square feet. Knowing how much you need can save you money. Vinyl siding can completely transform the look of a home and make it more energy efficient. Choose a qualified contractor It is important for consumers to do Consumers who do their homework their research when it comes to siding will get the best value for their materials and contractors. A contractor investments. who takes shortcuts or improperly installs the siding may void a manufacturer’s warranty. Always ask family members and friends for recommendations before choosing a contractor, and check out each prospective contractor’s work for yourself. Interview more than one contractor and compare both their costs and what they offer. Ask plenty of questions of the contractors, and avoid those who try hard-sell methods. Questionable contractors may try strategies like a promise of a considerable discount if you “act now” or scare tactics that your home is unsafe in its present condition. Be sure the contractor carries general liability insurance as well as workers’ compensation insurance for their subcontractors. Ask for a license number as well and verify its accuracy.

Siding comes in all types of materials — from wood to plastic to fiber cement — but vinyl is among the most popular due to cost and availability. Research how well particular brands of siding stand up to conditions and which are the least likely to crack, warp or discolor. Find this information from online reviews or through consumer advocacy groups. Also remember, vinyl and other synthetic materials have improved and can now mimic the look of many other materials for a fraction of the cost.

Few home improvements can transform a home more than the installation of new siding. Replacing siding can be a costly venture, but the right siding will maintain its appeal for years to come. Updated siding can improve home’s energy value by enabling owners to save on heating and cooling costs. A new design and color also can improve a home’s property value and set it apart from neighboring properties. According to the Professional Builder’s Home Exteriors Survey, exterior design and materials used are a top priority for new home buyers. Project costs depend on the size of the home as well as which siding material homeowners choose. Considering new siding is a major renovation, it pays to get the job done right.

Five Ways To Increase Home Fire Safety (MS) — An average of seven Americans die each week as a result of house fires. Most fires occur in residential buildings between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when occupants are most likely to be asleep. Your first line of defense is fire preparedness. Here’s five things you can do to increase your chance of survival in a fire: • Install smoke alarms on every story of your home and outside sleeping areas. Be sure to test them monthly, clean them every six months and replace batteries in spring and fall. Having working fire alarms can cut your chance of dying in a fire in half! • Have a fire escape plan for your family and practice it. A small fire can spread rapidly — you may only have minutes or seconds to escape. When going over the details of your escape plan, check windows and doors to ensure all open easily. Know your local emergency number (911). Never stop to gather belongings or reenter a home after safely outside. • When renovating, consider using

fire-rated, noncombustible products. Your choice of insulation, for example, can be vital. Fire-resistant building materials can give you extra time to escape when seconds count. • Purchase a multi-use fire ladder for each bedroom in your home and practice using it. A fire ladder may be your only escape option if flames block critical exits. • Place fire extinguishers on every level of your home, especially in highrisk areas like the kitchen, near fireplaces and in the garage. Use only for small, contained fires that are not spreading rapidly. Know how to operate your extinguisher before an emergency occurs using the PASS method: Pull pin, Aim low, Squeeze lever and Sweep from side to side. The safest option is always to evacuate your home and call for help. Fire prevention measures are a serious matter in every home. Find out how to keep your home and family safe at nfpa.org or improve your fire safety knowledge by visiting the Roxul website.

In its 2015 “Cost vs. Value Report,” Remodeling magazine found that a midrange kitchen remodeling project, which cost an average of nearly $57,000 during the period examined, recouped roughly 68 percent of that cost at resale. That return was slightly less than that provided by midrange bathroom remodeling projects, which provided a 70 percent return at resale. More upscale remodeling projects provided even smaller returns, despite costing substantially more money. For example, the cost of major upscale kitchen remodeling projects averaged $113,000 during the time studied for the report. But only 59 percent of that sizable investment provided was recouped at resale. Upscale bathroom remodeling projects also underperformed compared to midrange projects, recouping slightly less than 60 percent at resale. No upscale project referenced in the report provided a greater return than replacing existing siding with new fiber-cement siding, a project that recouped homeowners a greater than 84 percent return at resale. More information about the 2015 report is available at www.remodeling.hw.net.

Top 5 Renovation Tips To Create More Space In Your Home (MS) — As real estate prices continue to climb, the cost to trade up to a larger home is on the upswing across the country, especially as markets remain hampered by tight inventory levels. As a result, more and more Americans are choosing to renovate their current homes instead of relocating. In fact, some forecasts predict that 2015 renovation spending could exceed the record of $324 billion set during the peak of last decade’s housing boom. While the hunt for more square footage can be challenging, homeowners shouldn’t feel like a costly second story or complete addition are the only options. Here are five great ways to create or optimize space in your existing home. 1. Finish an unfinished basement. A basement renovation can hold limitless potential and increase the resale value or income potential of your home. Think about the possibilities: a home theater, office, spare bedroom, basement apartment or recreation room. The key to doing it successfully is to focus on what’s behind the walls, especially since moisture is a common issue in basements. Choosing the right insulation is critical. Look for products that are vapor permeable, dimensionally stable and mold and

moisture resistant. Many contractors use a semi-rigid sheathing board paired with insulation to combat thermal bridging and protect against mold and mildew growth. For interior walls and ceilings, insulation is ideal because of its ability to absorb noise and indoor traffic sounds, ensuring your newfound space is a peaceful one. 2. Create a more open-concept feel with light and color. If your home wasn’t blessed with towering windows, installing French doors and pot lights can encourage light to travel more freely, creating the illusion of space. Likewise, choosing a paint color for walls, trim and moldings that is lighter and cooler in tone (think soft grays or blues) will help to reflect light and give the room a more open feel. 3. Remove non-load-bearing walls. Homeowners have the opportunity to rethink the layout of their home by removing non-load-bearing walls. Removing structurally unnecessary walls can make your whole home feel larger, improve flow, lighting and the function of your home. 4. Convert your garage into usable living or work space. For many homeowners, the garage becomes an overflow room for storage –– and is

Install carpet and quality thermal insulation to block outdoor noise and keep in warmth. 5. Choose furniture and accessories carefully. Adopt a minimalist’s eye. Begin looking around your home for

furniture or accessories that overwhelm the space. Interior designers recommend choosing lowprofile or small-scale furniture for rooms with less square footage. Dualpurpose items, such as ottomans with storage chests inside, are a budgetfriendly way to save on space while staying organized.

The Timeless Elegance Of Stone For thousands of years, natural stone has been used in building projects. Elegant and timeless, it inspires artists, architects and writers from all backgrounds. Would you like to integrate stone into your next renovation project? Even though there is a wide choice of natural stone, some kinds have been proven over time for embellishing homes—these days we see it in kitchen countertops, fireplaces, stairs, walls, patios and as exterior siding.

Embrace The Wonders Of Wireless At Home Electronic devices enable us to access information, communicate and engage in entertainment. Consumer electronics also have transformed the typical household. Data from the Consumer Electronics Association, CTIA and U.S. Census Bureau paint a picture of just how immersed in new technology society has become. Statistics indicate the typical home of 2.6 people has an average of 24 electronic gadgets in use, including one or more smartphones. These devices include eReaders, HDTVs, laptops, tablets, printers, digital cameras, DVRs, Bluetooth speakers, portable GPS devices, and more. To meet the demands of all of these devices, some homes need an electronics overhaul, including beefing up the capabilities of Internet connections and wireless networks. Many Wi-Fi routers claim to be capable of supporting as many as 255 connected devices. While this is theoretically possible, having that many

devices on a standard home wireless router your devices. can compromise how well a network Many older routers broadcast on a works. The results may include slow 2.4GHz signal, the same as many other Internet browsing abilities, radio devices. Crowding on the long lag time and even 2.4GHz spectrum could cause connection interference or slowdown during the busiest droppage. When considering times of the day for Internet renovation projects traffic. It may be worth it to around the home, invest in a new router that it may be worth it can search for other to pay attention to channels that have less electronic devices traffic and broadcast and their through them. connectivity. Test your speed Start with the router

The wireless router in your home is a technological workhorse. When the router goes down, your devices follow suit. Without a router you will not be able to access the digital signal from your Internet Service Provider and send it out to all of

Factors To Consider When Planning A Home Office As technology has made working remotely easier, more and more professionals are working from home. Working from home can help working parents save money on childcare costs and help all workers avoid rush hour traffic jams and the costs of commuting to and from the office. The right working environment is essential for men and women who work from home. An environment that’s conducive to work can help people increase their productivity and make their employers more likely to allow more employees to work from home. Professionals who are new to working from home may find it takes some time before they can create the perfect working environment, but the following are a few factors to consider when planning a home office. Space: One of the disadvantages to working from home is that remote workers don’t have access to the same level of equipment as in the main office, such as color copiers or scanners. If you want to include even scaled-down versions of such equipment in your office, you will need ample space. In addition, less spacious home offices can feel too tight and enclosed, making workers uncomfortable and less enthusiastic about working every day. Pick a spot in your home that affords room for your equipment and the ability to move around so you don’t feel cramped throughout the workday. Lighting: Lighting is another factor remote workers must consider when they’re planning their home offices. Natural light can provide an energetic boost and improve your mood, so choose a room in your home

that gets lots of sunlight during the day. Many professionals who work remotely do so from the basements of their homes, which can make it difficult to rely on natural light. If the basement is the only location in your home that can fit a home office, look for lighting sources that replicate daylight so you are not working in dark quarters. Speak with your physician about how to arrange lighting to reduce eyestrain caused by staring at a computer. Connectivity: Connectivity also must be considered when planning a home office. While wireless Internet has made Internet dead zones less problematic, certain areas or rooms in your home may still be touchand-go with regard to Internet connectivity. Such areas should be avoided when choosing a room for your home office, as it can be difficult to remain productive if your connection to your office’s external server is routinely compromised. Find an area where the wireless connection is always strong. Distractions: While your home might be empty for much of the day, you don’t want to be distracted when the kids come home from school or when your spouse or roommate arrives home from work. Avoid putting your home office too close to popular hangout areas in your home, such as the kitchen and the living room. Instead, choose a room where you have lots of privacy so you can focus on your work and won’t be routinely interrupted. Working from home can pay numerous dividends, but professionals who telework must put careful thought into the rooms or areas of their homes where they plan to work.

Relatively inexpensive software can show you your Internet speed numbers to see if your connection is meeting the speeds promised by your ISP. If your speed is slow when tested at various times in a given day, you may want to upgrade your service package to a faster service plan. If the speed is adequate, you can invest in some other options. Get new hardware

Routers should be placed in a central location so that the signal can be accessed throughout the house. But router placement may depend on where your cable or fiber optic lines enter the home. If router signal interference seems suspect in

slower connections, hardware, such as a greater-range antenna, wireless access points, and wireless repeaters can help expand your router signal throughout the house. Speak with a wireless network expert about the options that may be best for your home. Another consideration is a Wi-Fi plug that uses existing electrical circuits in a home to expand the signals offered by the router. Expand your gadget list

Once a wireless signal is verified and confirmed as adequate, you may be interested in additional devices that can tap into the wireless network and make your home run more efficiently. Converting Garages Into Livable Spaces Many people decide to upgrade from their apartments or condominiums out of a need for more space. But even after moving into a new home, homeowners may soon begin to outgrow the room they have. Rather than looking for a new home, some homeowners consider expansion. Expanding a living space can be expensive, and a more affordable option may be converting existing basement or garage space into something more livable. Garages already are built on a foundation, have four walls and a roof overhead, so a garage-conversion project is merely a matter of turning this utilitarian area into a living space. Before beginning the renovation, homeowners should consider the benefits versus the cost of converting the garage. For those who are planning to grow old in a house, a garage conversion can be a worthy investment. But those who intend to sell their homes rather than retire in them may learn that a converted garage can affect home value and make it less desireable at resale. Compare your home to others in the area and see what your neighbors have done. If converted garages are the norm where you live, your own renovation may fit in with others. Always apply for the proper permits and learn the zoning laws to see if a garage conversion is acceptable in your town or city. It’s best to go by the book so that work can be done in a proper manner and be inspected for safety.

121133

Many homeowners hope their garage-conversion projects will make their garages seem like a seamless part of the rest of the house. To do so, you will need to remove evidence the space was once a garage. Slab floor will need to be raised and insulated. Walls also will need to be insulated and finished to improve comfort and soundproofing. Many garages do not have windows, so for the garage to function as a renovated space, windows may need to be added. One of the biggest transformations will come by way of modifying the garage door entry. Some homeowners prefer to leave the existing door so that the home still has the appearance of a garage from the curb, while others remove the garage door and rebuild the exterior wall so that it has a window or another architectural element. An architect can help suggest design elements that will camouflage the original garage look and make the space seem like it was always part of the main living area of the home. Landscaping work also can minimize the appearance of an old garage. Rather than having the driveway end at the wall of a home, shrubbery, pavers and other techniques can blend the garage renovation into the rest of the yard design. Transforming a garage into a living space can add several hundred square feet to a home. Hire a reputable contractor and follow the municipal guidelines for modifying the space to ensure the job is done right.

Prepare Cooling Systems For Warm Weather One springtime task on homeowners’ to-do lists is checking cooling systems to ensure they are ready for summer. Proper maintenance of cooling systems is essential to saving energy and keeping utility costs down. Fortunately, homeowners need not be certified HVAC technicians to maintain their cooling units. • Clean filters. Whether a home is kept cool by a whole-house central air conditioning system or window units, clean filters are necessary to keep the units working efficiently. Routinely replacing or cleaning filters is one of the most important maintenance tasks to improve airflow and increase efficiency. The U.S. Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy says replacing a dirty, clogged filter with a clean one can lower an air conditioner’s energy consumption by anywhere from 5 to 15 percent. • Know the square footage. When replacing a cooling system, have an understanding of the size of your home (or room if installing an window unit). Determine the area of the home so you buy a unit that suits your needs. Air conditioners use BTUs (British Thermal Units) to define cooling

power. The more BTUs, the larger the space that can be cooled. However, homeowners do not want to exceed the necessary cooling power. This leads to energy waste. EnergyStar.gov can help homeowners find the right cooling system for their needs. • Inspect system coils. The evaporator and condenser coils on air conditioners can collect dirt, even when filters are maintained. Dirty coils are less efficient at absorbing heat, so periodically remove the dirt. Outdoor coils can be kept cleaner by cutting back foliage from the unit to allow better air flow. • Inspect condensate drains. Energy.gov also suggests making sure condensate drains, which take moisture pulled from the air away, are functioning properly. If they’re clogged, they may not be effective at reducing humidity in a home, and they may even leak. • Clear debris. Remove fallen leaves or other plant material from condenser units and fan blades. Obstructed components can cause the system to retain heat, compromising its ability to work effectively. Some homeowners prefer to cover their condensers at the end of the cooling

season to keep leaves and dirt out of the unit. • Check window unit seals. When installing window units, make sure all seals around the air conditioner are in place to prevent cool-air loss. • Hire a technician. Air conditioner technicians can be very helpful and will know how to prepare a system for hot weather. Technicians typically conduct multipoint inspections and measure

such things as refrigerant levels and duct leakage. Airflow through the evaporator coil also may be checked. If a homeowner suspects the thermostat is not working properly, a technician can verify if that is true and even install a new one if necessary. As summer approaches, homeowners should prepare their air conditioning units for the busy months ahead.

Did You Know Fences can provide privacy and transform backyards into calming places to relax and unwind. But fences also may lead to disputes with neighbors if installation is not carried out with etiquette. Always place the fence within your property lines, which can be determined by examining a land survey for your home. Inform your neighbors of your intention to erect a fence, and give any concerns they might have substantial consideration. Face the more aesthetically appealing side of the fence outward to the street and to neighbors’ yards. In addition, maintain the fence once it is installed so it does not become a neighborhood eyesore that irks your neighbors.

What you can do

What a professional can do

With a few tools and accessories, you can minimize the visibility of all your wiring and power cords. With some cord or cable covers, which are inexpensive and easy to install, you will be able to camouflage cables running along walls, behind your computer and under your desk. When several cords are in the same place, keep them together with a cord tube so they won’t be so noticeable. Or, if you’re the least bit creative, conceal your cords in decorative boxes or flowerpots, etc.

For really effective results, call on the services of a professional to hide your cords and main cables inside walls and ceilings. Or you could simply have new baseboards installed behind which you leave some space for them. Another way to hide electrical cords is to have a double layer of walls and ceilings put in. This would also be a great opportunity to choose the very latest in wall coverings.

The home improvement market, which includes both improvements and maintenance, has rebounded considerably from its most recent low point in 2011. The Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) of Harvard University indicated in early 2015 that the upcoming year would surpass the $324 billion spent on improvements during the peak of the housing boom a decade ago. Even though homebuilding and the home industry in general is still not at complete recovery, trends within the home improvement industry do suggest that homeowners have once again become comfortable investing in their homes.

Safeguard Your Home From Insect Infestations and potential shelters for insects. Seal such cracks with caulk, testing the areas by feeling for any incoming air. If you still feel air coming in, there is still some sealing to do. Cracks in cabinets or counters also may provide shelter to insects, so address these areas as well. • Reconsider exterior lighting. Exterior lighting may be inviting insects into your home. Insects tend to congregate around lights at nighttime, so avoid placing lights right outside entryways. Once doors are opened, insects can then fly right into your home. Keep exterior lights as far away from entryways as possible. If you need lights right outside your doors, install motionsensing lights that only turn on when you come within a few feet of the door. This reduces the volume of insects that congregate outside your entryways, and lowers the risk that insects will follow you in when you arrive home at night. • React quickly upon seeing insects. Insect infestations happen gradually, so homeowners should react quickly when seeing a single insect or a handful of insects inside their homes. The slower your response, the more likely one or two intruders is likely to turn into a large infestation. Immediately clean any areas where you see insects, and take more substantial measures if your initial efforts were not enough to prevent more insects from coming in. The presence of insects inside a home can be a nuisance, but there are many ways to prevent such infestations and keep unwelcome guests at bay.

The dawn of spring marks the return of many things, including long hours of sunlight and warm temperatures in which to enjoy that sunshine. But homeowners know spring also marks the return of insects, unwelcome guests that can be difficult or expensive to control once they have entered a home. As problematic as insect infestations can be, preventing such problems can be simple, especially when homeowners are proactive. The following are a handful of ways to keep insects out this spring and summer. • Consider potential food supplies and cut those supplies off. Insects often enter a home in search of food, so cutting off potential food supplies is a great way to prevent insects from coming inside. Give dining areas a thorough cleaning after meals, vacuuming or sweeping the floors beneath dining tables each night before going to bed. (Parents of young children may want to sweep floors after each meal.) In addition, clean pets’ bowls each night to be sure there are no food scraps left that may entice insects, and make sure pet food containers are tightly sealed after each serving. Sinks are another potential food source, so empty food traps after using the sink and run the garbage disposal as well to remove any food that might be lingering. • Address potential shelters. Insects also seek shelter inside homes, and there are many areas in a home that can provide adequate shelter. Cracks around windows and doors and in the foundation provide both entry points

Tips To Finding The Right Contractor hiring a particular firm, get written estimates from several contractors. Some contractors will charge fees for the estimate, but they must inform you of those fees before the estimates are provided. Compare estimates so you can get a better grasp of how much your project will cost. While cost is important, try to avoid choosing a contractor based on cost alone, as a good rapport with a contractor who may be more expensive might make spending a little more money worth it. • Make sure the contract is specific. When you choose a contractor, make sure the contract he or she provides is very specific, going into great detail about the specifics of the project. This contract should spell out the materials and equipment that will be used, as well as the final cost of the project, the payment schedules while the project is ongoing and the work schedule. • Keep track of all paperwork and pay by check. Once you sign the contract, create a folder where you can store all paperwork. Scan each document so you can store them on your computer as well. When payments must be made, never pay in cash. Pay by check and do not pay for the entirety of the project upfront, opting instead to pay at predetermined intervals spelled out in your contract. Nerves often come into play when hiring a home contractor, but homeowners who take a careful approach to the hiring process will likely end up hiring a trustworthy contractor who does great work.

Did you know that more than 215 gallons of wine are produced around the globe every second? That statistic certainly confirms the world’s passion for the fermented grape. Red, white, pink or fortified, wine is always synonymous with pleasure and refinement. Many wine lovers buy their bottles randomly and consume them within days or weeks of purchase. However, professional sommeliers will tell you that certain wellmade wines stored at an ideal temperature increase in value. The good news is that the art of storing wine is no longer the reserve of luxury establishments. The option of keeping a selection of wines in optimal conditions at home is now available to all lovers of this delicious alcoholic beverage. Some key questions - Stores now stock a wide range of wine cellars and coolers designed for the average wine owner. Before you decide which model you want, ask yourself a few questions. How much do you want to spend? How much space do you need? Is your goal to drink the wine on an ongoing basis or allow high quality wines to age for several years? Affordable wine coolers - The smallest coolers, in which eight bottles of wine can be stored, sell for under $200. Even though space is limited, that means you can always have a reasonable selection of wines on hand. There are also some models on the market for under $300 that can accommodate up to 24 bottles. Feeling tempted? A wine cellar, cabinet or cooler? - A wine cellar is a place for storing wine; it may be an electric appliance, called a wine cabinet, or a dedicated room. Wine coolers, on the other hand, are made to cool bottles so you can serve them at the perfect temperature. They are not designed for the aging of wines over long periods of time.

Home improvement projects tend to be costly. Because of the considerable financial investment homeowners must make when improving their homes, it’s important to find a contractor you can trust and feel comfortable with. The vast majority of professional contractors are trustworthy and willing to work with homeowners to help them design the homes of their dreams. But there are still some tips homeowners can keep in mind as they begin their search for a contractor. • Work only with licensed contractors. Licensed contractors have been verified as legitimate by your local governing body, removing much of the fears homeowners have with regard to finding trustworthy contractors. Unlicensed contractors may not be insured or bonded, and their estimates may be lower than their licensed competitors’ because they do not contribute to unemployment. Licensed contractors often are subjected to criminal background checks as well, calming homeowners’ fears about inviting strangers into their homes. • Ask for recommendations. Wordof-mouth is great when looking for contractors. Oftentimes, a contractor’s best friends are his past clients. Ask friends or neighbors for recommendations on local contractors, inquiring about prices as well as each particular contractor’s demeanor and openness to suggestions. Contact your local Office of Consumer Affairs to check each contractor’s complaint history. • Get written estimates. Before

How To Check Your Deck For Problems Summer party season is in full swing, and that means scores of people will be relaxing with family and friends on their decks. But such gatherings are only as fun as they are safe, and responsible hosts and homeowners must inspect their decks for signs of trouble before hosting their first summer gathering. Deck inspections can be relatively simple, especially for those homeowners whose decks are newly built or recently refurbished. But even a new deck should be inspected at the start of the season to ensure the safety of all who will be spending time on the deck in the months to come. The following are a few tips to help homeowners spot trouble spots on their decks. * Check the wood. Split or decaying wood is a trouble spot that will need to be addressed. Such wood may feel spongy or break off without splintering, and those things are indicative of rot. Another sign of trouble to look for with regard to the wood is whether or not it has any holes. Holes may be a symptom of

infect infestation, which can compromise the safety of the deck over time. * Inspect the ledger board. The ledger board is a weight-bearing board that connects the deck to the house. Over time, the gap between the ledger board and the house may widen. In such instances, simply tighten the bolts. When inspecting the ledger board, examine the flashing that surrounds it. Flashing prevents the buildup of moisture that causes rot, and when there is an issue with the flashing, it’s often noticeable because mud and debris has become stuck between the flashing and the exterior wall of the home. Clear any such debris and then seal the overlapping areas with caulk. * Inspect support posts. Support posts should be firmly connected to the beams below the deck floor. Loose connections between the support posts and beams should be tightened, and replace any bolts that need replacing. * Inspect the surface. The elements can be harsh on a deck, so inspect the

surface to ensure there is no buildup of mildew, power washing any areas where mildew has started to accumulate. Different deck materials may need certain types of cleaners, so consult with the company who built your deck or speak to a local home improvement specialist to determine which type of cleaning solution your deck needs. Once the deck has been power washed, allow it to dry before applying any additional layers of finish. * Ensure railings are not loose. Grasp and shake the deck’s railings to ensure none are loose and all provide ample support for anyone who will be

enjoying the deck. Balusters are the short pillars or columns that run perpendicular to the railings and the walking surface of the deck, and these should also be checked to ensure they are not loose. Youngsters may lean against the balusters when relaxing on the deck, so it’s imperative that none are loose. Deck inspections ideally should be performed in spring before homeowners host their first get-together, and if any problems are discovered, everyone should steer clear of the deck until those issues have been addressed.

How To Clean And Maintain Stainless Steel No matter the style of a homeowner’s kitchen, be it modern, traditional or farmhouse, stainless steel appliances can add a pop of shine and a touch of class. Proponents of stainless steel appliances note their easy maintenance, stylish look and durability. Plus, the neutral tone of stainless steel helps it blend in with just about any color palette. Stainless steel is lauded for its strength and resistance to corrosion and rust. These attributes make it a popular choice in kitchens, where moisture is an issue. Although they are certainly durable choices, stainless steel appliances require maintenance to keep them looking and performing at their best. Considering that stainless steel also costs more than other finish options, taking the time to learn proper care can help protect homeowners’ investments. • Avoid chlorine bleach or other products containing chloride. Although stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, it is not completely

impervious. Chlorine products can damage the surface of stainless steel appliances and stain them if the chlorine is left to sit. • Do not use metal scourers or coarse abrasives on the stainless steel because such products may scratch the steel. Steel wool pads can leave behind a residue of small metal particles that may eventually rust. • Baking soda mixed with a little dish soap can be used to remove some tough dirt and stains. Rinse well and towel dry to avoid streaking. • Clean and wipe the steel in the direction of the “grain.” Usually this means working from the top of the appliance and moving down toward the floor. • Consult with the owner’s manual before undertaking any maintenance or cleaning. The appliance may have a special coating over the stainless steel to help protect it, and it’s best to know what you’re dealing with before getting your hands dirty.

Freshen Up Your Home For The Spring Season After a few months of chilly temperatures, come spring, many homeowners are eager to throw open their windows and doors and breathe new life into their homes. Simple changes made now — even before the weather begins to warm up — can improve interior spaces and brighten the atmosphere of a home. • Go plant shopping. Research from NASA suggests adding at least one plant in your home per 100 square feet is efficient enough to clean air. Fresh foliage also makes a home feel warm and inviting. Watering and misting plants introduces moisture into indoor air, which can make rooms overcome with dry air from heating systems feel comfortable. Just be sure to avoid overwatering plants, which can lead to mold growth. • Swap out throw pillows. Accent pillows on beds and sofas are quick and inexpensive ways to add new bursts of color to rooms. You may be able to make over a room’s entire color scheme with new pillows. Invest in pillows that you can switch with each season so your decor will never look tired or dull.

• Clean existing light fixtures. Another way to brighten the mood in a home is to periodically clean light fixtures to make sure they are working effectively. Spend time dusting them and cleaning off any accumulated debris. If need be, switch out old lamp shades for newer ones that let more light shine through. If inadequate lighting is a problem no matter how many lamps you have, consult with an electrician about installing more overhead and accent lighting. • Give rugs and floors a deep cleaning. Recirculated air may be full of dust and other microscopic particles that end up blowing throughout your home. Also, it’s easy to track in dirt and other materials on your shoes that become imbedded in carpeting. At least once a year, rent or enlist the surfaces of carpet and upholstery cleaners to give floors a thorough cleaning. You may be surprised at how clean and fresh a home looks and smells once rugs and carpets are deepcleaned. You also can make a dry carpet cleaner using baking soda, corn starch and desired fresh herbs for fragrance.

3 Ways To Improve Indoor Air Quality All Year Long As winter wears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold weather climates to experience some cabin fever. Winter weather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear. In addition to contributing to cabin fever, winter weather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. While air pollution is something most often associated with densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long winters when windows are often closed for months at a time. Though open windows in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are ways to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of which season it happens to be.

1. Clean the floors.

Dirty floors are one of the chief contributors to poor indoor air quality. Dust, dirt, pollen, and pet dander can accumulate on floors, leading to poor air quality and potentially aggravating respiratory conditions such as asthma. When vacuuming, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, which is a uniquely designed mechanical air filter that traps harmful particles such as pollen, pet dander and dust mites. When you finish vacuuming, mop floors to gather any dust or allergens that escaped the

Sprinkle and then vacuum up after a few hours. • Color-coordinate bookshelves. Group all books with similarly colored covers together for an instant and eyeappealing look. • Simmer some homemade home deodorizer. In a large pot, boil water and some scented herbs, such as rosemary, citrus rinds, vanilla, or lavender. The aroma will waft through

the home, creating a pleasing scent. • Invest in new window treatments. Lightweight draperies or new blinds or shades can transform the look of a room. Be sure to keep curtains and blinds open during the day to maximize the hours of sunlight. Homeowners can make some simple changes while they’re stuck indoors and reap the benefits when the weather warms up again.

vacuum.

2. Control indoor air moisture.

Moist air is great for dust mites and mold, both of which are very bad for humans, so do everything you can to maintain healthy levels of indoor air moisture. Dehumidifiers can reduce indoor air moisture and control allergens, but it’s important to take additional steps as well. When bathing, try to keep a bathroom window open on a slight crack to prevent mold growth. When preparing meals in the kitchen, make use of your exhaust fan. In addition, don’t overwater houseplants, as they can become breeding grounds for mold.

3. Resist synthetic fragrances.

A home that smells good tends to feel more pleasant, especially during winter months when windows are closed. But synthetic fragrances, such as those found in detergents and air fresheners, may be providing that welcoming scent at a heavy cost to a home’s inhabitants. Such fragrances may be emitting various chemicals, including volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, into the air, affecting indoor air quality and possibly even human health. When buying laundry products, look for those that are fragrance-free, also choosing home cleaning products that do not include any artificial fragrances.

Find And Maintain The Right Carpet For You Carpets provide both practical and aesthetic appeal inside a home. In winter, carpets help keep homes warm, and the right color carpet can add to design schemes. While rugs may have originated in the Far East, North America also has some rich carpet history. According to The Carpet and Rug Institute, the United States carpet industry began in 1791 when the first woven carpet mill opened in Philadelphia. Others soon followed suit. Tufted carpets and machine-powered manufacturing helped churn out yards upon yards of carpeting, making it a popular, affordable and common addition to homes, especially after the post-World War II housing boom. Carpeting remains a go-to flooring material in modern homes. In fact, many homes offer a blend of both carpeting in some rooms and different flooring choices in others. Upon choosing carpet, it is important that homeowners follow some guidelines to prolong a carpet’s longevity and maintain its style. The following are some common carpeting dos and don’ts. DO consider the room’s purpose and foot traffic before shopping for carpeting. Make a list of the attributes

desired (e.g., soundproofing, easy care, high pile) and present these to the salesperson so he or she can help you make the best choice. DON’T rush into flooring choices. Unlike paint colors, flooring materials are more permanent choices that are only updated every several years or more. Weigh all of your options before diving in. DO consider conservative colors and styles. Neutral hues and patterns will blend better with furniture options. This means you can change furniture out and still keep the existing carpeting, which complements any new pieces. Also, if there’s a chance you might sell your home in the near future, buyers tend to look for a neutral color scheme they can make their own. DON’T skimp on padding to save a few dollars on the carpet installation. The carpeting needs a solid foundation to last and look its best. Inadequate padding can lead to extra and noticeable wear and tear. Invest in a good foundation for the carpeting, like firm, dense padding in high-traffic areas. DO become knowledgeable about different carpet styles, such as frieze,

Berber, Saxony, textured, and more. This will help ensure you make the most educated decision. DON’T purchase at the first store you visit. Shop around to investigate different pricing and specials. Also, consider the professionalism and expertise of the staff responsible for carpet installation. High-cost carpet may not look very good if it isn’t

V oecks D ryw all

installed correctly. DO stain-protect rugs and carpeting, which can help repel stains that would otherwise become permanent and can prolong the longevity of the flooring. DON’T forget to vacuum carpets frequently to prevent ground-in dirt and debris. DO pick textured carpets to conceal footprints and vacuum track marks.

If you’re planning on making some simple but effective changes at home, here are some tips on how to give your basement a total 180-degree makeover.

Soundproof it

Installing acoustic insulation is the perfect excuse to crank up the subwoofer, host a get-together or let the kids run wild. Soundproofing is the ultimate solution to maximize your basement’s peace, quiet and privacy. Industry experts suggest using Roxul Safe n’ Sound, which effectively absorbs sound and is easy to work with. Out with the old, in with a floor Installing a new floor or updating the existing one can improve the overall comfort level and look of your basement. Many unfinished basements have basic concrete flooring, which is cold year-round. Flooring options are endless — hardwood, laminate, cork and Berber flooring all add warmth to

Is It Time To Change Your Countertop?

Is your kitchen or bathroom countertop discolored, stained, chipped, cracked or warped? Or is it simply so outdated that it reminds you of parachute pants, shoulder pads and skinny ties? Then the time has come to bid it farewell.

a basement bedroom or TV room; play mats are great for kids’ playrooms; and carpets are perfect to make any room feel more comfy and welcoming.

Get creative with a fresh coat of paint

To remove the old one First, cut the seal around the counter with a sharp tool. Then remove all the screws from under the countertop. Next, remove the sink using a sturdy metal spatula or a crowbar. At this point, you can remove the old countertop safely. Be sure to check with your municipality about how to properly dispose of it. An important tip: don’t forget to turn off the water supply to the kitchen before touching any pipes.

Transform the dull and boring space into an inviting entertainment oasis or a colorful playroom with a simple coat of paint. When considering the paint, think about what color will compliment your existing furniture. To add some drama, consider adding depth and visual interest to your space with a different colored accent wall.

Accessorize it

Installing the new one To install your new countertop (preferably custom made), ask for help from someone who is good with their hands. Get yourself a level, some Teflon tape, some screws and a screwdriver. Keep in mind that you don’t want to use screws that are too long, as they may create ugly bumps on the surface of the countertop. Position the new countertop with the help of your assistant and adjust it so it is level and perfectly aligned. Lastly, apply a layer of Teflon tape around the edges, where it joins the wall, to ensure that it will be waterproof. And now all you have to do is sit back and admire your handiwork.

Throw pillows, rugs, lighting, and artwork are simple additions that can immediately enhance or change your basement’s look and feel. Pot lights can modernize, while art work and throw pillows can add a splash of color. Decide on a theme and color scheme for your room and keep your eye out for staple pieces that will make it feel like an entirely new space. Reducing Renovation Costs

Did you know that according to legend, the famous Trojan horse was built of maple? Maple is a species found around the world. Its wood is divided into two categories: hardwood and soft wood. Hard maple wood is heavy and valued for its sturdiness. Soft maple wood, on the other hand, is used for purposes that require less strength.

Popular types of wood

In the field of interior decoration, rare or precious woods are in big demand at the moment. For a unique look, designers love the sublime beauty of ebony, mahogany, sandalwood, pink ivory, zebrawood, amaranth and olive. These exotic woods are more expensive than the common kinds, but their rich colors and fine grain are well worth the price. Bamboo is an affordable,

elegant alternative and it is also an eco-friendly choice. Reclaimed barn wood and driftwood are also experiencing their hour of glory. Sometimes gray, sometimes bleached, these relics are like treasure to those who know how to breathe new life into them.

Decorating with wood: don’t overdo it!

Whatever the type, wood immediately adds warmth to a home’s atmosphere. However, unless you want to create a country cottage atmosphere, be sure not to overdo it. In other words, don’t go crazy by mixing several different types and colors. Use a harmonious blend of woods and stains to create a coherent decor for living the good life. When in doubt, don’t hesitate to call in a professional decorator.

Find The Best Method Of Treating Warm Weather Insects Remove leaves and clean up debris close to the house, as these can both encourage infestations. Piles of rotting wood or leftover firewood can be a food or shelter source for a number of insects. Inspect water spigots for leaks and improve suspect drainage on your property, as these things can be welcoming to bugs that like moist surroundings. Remove standing water whenever possible to eliminate spots for mosquitoes to incubate larvae. Natural remedies also may do the trick. Mint, bay leaves, catnip, and garlic can repel insects like roaches and ants. Citrus can be a natural flea deterrent. Some homeowners have had success planting marigolds around their yards to serve as a natural bug repellent because the flowers produce a scent that many insects find repulsive. Thai lemon grass plants also can be used to keep mosquitoes at bay. Remember, natural predators, such as birds, bats, spiders, and larger insects, feed on nuisance bugs. Keeping these helpful predators around may be an effective and natural way for homeowners to control annoying pests. If an insect problem seems out of control or if you need a professional opinion about the damage being done to your home or landscape, consult with an exterminator. Licensed exterminators have the training and expertise to assess insect concerns and create a plan of action that will minimize the risk to inhabitants of your home and nearby wildlife. An exterminator will know what it takes to treat insects and maximize the chances of removing the problem promptly and effectively. Warm weather is synonymous with many things, including the return of insects. Homeowners may be able to treat unruly bugs on their own, but especially problematic infestations may require the help of experienced exterminators.

Homeowners know that the arrival of spring also marks the re-emergence of insects. While not every insect is harmful, if an infestation grows considerably or if insects begin to move from the outdoors into a home, it may be time for homeowners to call in a professional. The Entomological Society of America points out that homeowners cannot count on bitterly cold winters to help control the numbers of insects in their yards. Insect ecology is affected by various factors and is not solely dependent on temperature. Furthermore, what occurred one year certainly may not be repeated the next, as homeowners who have had various insect infestations in their yards can attest. One year a yard may be overcome with ants, while the next year it may suffer through an earwig infestation. The first step homeowners looking to curtail insects in their yards can take is to determine if the insects they see are genuine threats to their lawns. Some bugs emerge and swarm early in the season, but then gradually disappear as spring turns into summer. Other insects may come out of hiding if a homeowner is doing a lot of yard work or construction around a house. Practice a wait-and-see approach to determine if you really have an insect problem or just have stirred up activity. Homeowners also must decide if it is bearable living with the insects. If insects are not doing any damage or if they can be controlled relatively easily, then you might be able to avoid calling in the professionals. However, if critters like termites and certain species of wood-eating insects are invasive and damaging your yard, you may need to take action. Anyone concerned with the side effects of pesticides and insecticides can first try to remedy the problem naturally. Sometimes it’s just a matter of making a yard less hospitable to insects.

Remodeling Insurance Can Protect Homeowners Many steps are involved in a successful home remodeling project. A common mistake made by homeowners is failing to consult with a homeowners’ insurance agent before beginning a major home overhaul. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners advises reviewing your home insurance policy before any significant work is done on your home. The right amount of coverage will protect your assets both during construction and afterward when your home is worth more. According to the independent consumer insurance Web site Insure.com, one in four remodeling projects will increase the value of a home by more than 25 percent, so there’s a good chance you will need to increase your coverage to compensate for renovations done on the home. Many insurance companies require you to insure your home for at least 80 percent of its replacement value. If you have added an extension or installed an inground pool, you may have raised the value of your property enough to necessitate an insurance policy change. Begin by talking with your

2016

insurance company and explain the scope of the planned renovations. Inquire whether you will need to update or amend your current insurance policy to protect yourself financially during the renovation. This is particularly important for those who will be doing the work themselves or asking a friend or family member for help. While many contractors have business and general liability insurance to protect themselves if a worker is injured, homeowners may need sufficient liability protection in the event a noncontractor gets hurt working on your home. Your insurance company may have other types of insurance to protect you further if you are planning a very large project. Failure to ask about coverage before starting the renovations puts you at risk. If you will be using contractors and subcontractors, be sure that they are insured and bonded. Should they damage your home or be injured during the renovation, their insurance will cover any resulting expenses. However, if they are not insured or bonded, you may be held liable through your own insurance

policy or you may have to pay out of pocket. Keep all receipts and document the progress of the renovation. You may need this information to present to your insurance carrier after the renovation is complete. This way you can request a new appraisal of the property and secure adequate insurance coverage. Certain improvements may make you eligible for discounts. For example, a new heating system, energy efficient appliances or an alarm system may qualify you for rebates or lower premiums. Homeowners may think they have covered all of their bases when preparing for a home renovation

project. However, it also is essential to consider insurance needs before you begin work and then again when the project has been completed and the value of the home has increased.

Reclaimed Wood Adds Instant Appeal To Home Projects Repurposing salvaged wood is a popular trend in the home improvement industry. Not only can using salvaged wood give a home a one-of-a-kind look, but it’s a handy way to incorporate the three Rs of green living into your lifestyle: reduce, reuse and recycle. Reclaimed wood is often used in flooring, beams, wall treatments, and doors, but it also can be turned into furniture or home accent items. Reclaimed wood adds warmth and historical interest to a home’s decor that newer materials may lack. Although finding wood that can be salvaged takes time and some legwork, such efforts can quickly pay off. Many businesses are now devoted to reclaimed timber, which can help make the process of finding and using salvaged wood even easier. Homeowners considering reclaimed wood may be interested to learn that such wood can serve various functions aside from benefitting the planet. • Match old-growth wood. New regulations may prevent certain species of trees from being cut down. That means it can be challenging to match old wood in a home, particularly if you’re looking to maintain historical value and authenticity. Relying on salvaged wood

items can alleviate this concern, ensuring that you can find rare woods that are no longer available brand new. • Salvaged wood has character. It’s difficult to mimic the natural age marks and character that older wood may have. Instead of being raised on farms, wood harvested decades ago probably grew in natural environments, making the wood both durable and strong. The color and grain of salvaged wood may also be unique. • Look at objects in a new way. Doors are versatile pieces of reclaimed lumber because they’re already flat and rather large. Doors can be turned into headboards, tables or benches. Staircase or porch posts can be turned into candlestick holders, and wood shutters can dress up walls and provide a place to hang artwork and other wall items. • Reclaimed wood can be found everywhere. Most people do not have to look too far to find wood they can salvage. Check salvage yards, landfills, dumpsters in front of older homes being renovated, or older, unused barns in rural settings. You also can collect driftwood or discarded shipping crates. While some reclaimed wood can be used as-is, some pieces may require

millwork, including sanding, cutting, shaping, and finishing. If you do not have these skills, you probably will have to hire someone who does.

The Internet is awash with ideas for putting salvaged wood to use. Get inspired and then find the pieces that will fit your project.

What To Do With Grass Clippings And Leaf Waste It will soon be time to clean up the lawn of the dead grass from last year’s growth. There may be leaf waste from last year’s trees to also pick up. It’s just the start of the season where homeowners need to look for what to do with their lawn refuse. Rob Mercer, Solid Waste Supervisor for the City of Norfolk, said that grass clippings and leaf waste can be delivered to the Norfolk Transfer Station located at 610 East Monroe. Hours for the Transfer Station are 7:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and 7:30 am to noon on Saturday. Mercer said the waste must be separated from other wastes or trash and then delivered to the compost pile

at the Transfer Station. The lawn waste can only contain grass or leaves. “Since the compost is returned to the soil, it cannot include nonbiodegradable substances, tree limbs, branches, prunings, garden waste or woody plants. These can all be be brought out to the Transfer Station but it needs to be separated from the grass,” Mercer said. Another option for grass clippings is to leave them on the lawn. Mercer said that mowing more often or using a mulching mower will allow home owners to leave the nutrient rich grass clippings on the lawn and not require bagging and hauling the grass clippings to the Transfer Station.

Six Tips For The Ultimate Walk-in Closet What fashionista has never dreamed of owning her own walk-in closet? A spacious area for storing clothes, shoes and accessories will make even the most meticulous of people happy. Here are seven tips for creating an optimal layout in your walk-in. 1. Plan separate sections for each category of clothing: long dresses, business suits, casual wear, underwear, coats, etc. 2. Opt for short rather than long horizontal rods, as they are sturdier and will simplify your search for clothing. 3. Avoid overloading rods, drawers and shelves. If possible, sell or give away any clothing that you haven’t worn for at least a year.

Allow as much natural light as possible into the room, or install enough lighting to be able to distinguish the most subtle colors. Who wants to realize—in the middle of an important meeting—that his navy blue tie is actually black? 5. Make room for a chair or even an armchair and at least one full length mirror so you can check your outfit on the spot—and feel like a movie star in your own home. 6. If you’re a shoe addict, place your collection on a shelf or in open compartments in order to protect them. You’ll also be able to find the perfect pair for your outfit with one quick glance. 4.
