An intense thunderstorm brought heavy rain — close to 5 inches in parts of Norfolk — and prolonged hail. It turned some Norfolk streets into raging rivers, with water rising up to the headlights of vehicles trying to pass through. Norfolk’s new Memorial AquaVenture Park opened for the summer. More than 63,000 people used the park, averaging 1,200 visitors per day.

The inaugural events at the Nebraska Airfest attracted thousands of people to Norfolk to see, among other events, the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team and such aerobatics pilots as Jessy Panzer, who thrilled the weekend crowds at the Nebraska Airfest in Norfolk with her dynamic maneuvers.

This past summer, the heat arrived and the rain went away. All of Nebraska and about two-thirds of the United States were left in a crippling drought. The drought caused corn, Nebraska’s biggest cash crop, to take a serious hit and gave Nebraskans a serious reminder of what life was like back during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s.

The drought also contributed to a spate of wildfires across North Central Nebraska. Here, firefighters plan an attack at the Fairfield Creek fire near Springview. The sprawling fire, sparked by lightning, charred at least 50,000 acres over several counties.
