Heavy rains spurred massive flooding and widespread damage along the Elkhorn River in June in Norfolk and area communities. On one stretch of the river, three Nebraska Central Railroad employees fell into the river when a bridge collapsed because of rising water. Two were located and safely got out of the river. A search ensued for Jeff Scholl, whose body was later found under the wreckage of the collapsed bridge.

Sarah Palin visited Norfolk for a book signing in Norfolk on Nov. 27. The former vice presidential nominee made Norfolk a stop on her tour to promote her latest book, and an estimated 1,200 people braved the cold to meet her on the weekend after Thanksgiving.

0

Norfolk welcomed two new additions to the community with Faith Regional Health Services’ new bed tower, which opened June 20, and the new University of Nebraska Medical Center nursing division on the campus of Northeast Community College. With more than 207,000 square feet, Faith Regional’s bed tower facility boasts three floors of 39 patient rooms, not to mention a fourth floor of the same size left available for possible future expansion.

The J. Paul and Eleanor McIntosh building on the Northeast Community College campus in Norfolk opened for classes in August. To address a shortage of nurses in the area, Northeast and the University of Nebraska Medical Center teamed up to raise funds and bring the $11.9 million nursing college to Norfolk.
