The Chrysler Museum of Art Stroll through thousands of years of art history at the Chrysler Museum of Art, home to Walter Chrysler, Jr.’s world-class collection of more than 30,000 pieces of art. African-Americans are featured throughout the permanent galleries, including the Civil War, Jamestown Exposition, World War II, the Cold War and USS Wisconsin Exhibits. The museum also offers an elementary school program called “Blacks in Blue” addressing the history of African-Americans in World War II. ATTRACTIONS / HISTORIC SITES Attucks Theatre The theatre, named for Crispus Attucks, the first AfricanAmerican Patriot killed in the American Revolution, first opened in 1919. Located on Church Street, it is the nation’s oldest theatre designed, developed, financed and operated entirely by African-Americans. Known as the “Apollo Theatre of the South,” this entertainment and cultural center closed its doors for nearly 40 years. The MacArthur Memorial Final resting place of General of the Army Douglas MacArthur and his wife, the complex includes a museum, special exhibit galleries, theater and gift shop. The Memorial, conceived by Joseph A. Jordan, Jr., former Norfolk Councilman and General District Court Judge, is inscribed with quotations of Dr. King and contains a fountain at its base. Norfolk History Museum at the Willoughby-Baylor House The Norfolk History Museum at the newly-refurbished Willoughby-Baylor House (circa 1794) illuminates the wide range and richness of the history of the entire region by providing engaging thematic offerings and surveys, including the decorative arts of Norfolk, the story of Norfolk at various stages in its long history as an international port and maritime center, the area’s impressive naval and military heritage, and the area’s historic buildings and residences at different periods in history. 601 East Freemason Street 757.441.1526 www.chrysler.org/houses.asp Norfolk Botanical Garden With more than 20 themed gardens, a 3.5-acre rose garden and a fragrance garden for the visually impaired, Norfolk Botanical Garden is a true jewel preserving the region’s horticultural heritage. Started in 1938 as a Works Progress Administration project, the labor to convert this one-time swamp into the beautiful gardens of today was provided by over 200 AfricanAmerican women. West Point Monument at Elmwood Cemetery Recognized as the South’s only known tribute to AfricanAmerican veterans of the Civil and Spanish-American Wars. This Virginia Civil War Trail site is marked by a statue of Sergeant Carney, the first black soldier to be killed in battle during the Civil War. 238 Princess Anne Road 757.441.2653 West Point Monument at Elmwood Cemetery CHURCHES The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Saint Mary’s is the oldest parish community in the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, and its spire is a landmark of the Norfolk skyline. African-American Catholics began attending Saint Mary’s in 1886 where a portion of the choir loft was reserved for them. Today, Saint Mary’s parish is 99 percent African-American. 1000 Holt Street 757.622.4487 Saint Mary’s Church First Baptist Church The congregation of this historic church was established in 1800 as an interracial congregation including whites, free blacks and slaves. FESTIVALS AND ARTISTS Adolphus Hailstork Internationally-known composer Adolphus Hailstork has written numerous works for choruses, solo voice, various chamber ensembles, bands and orchestras. Professor of Music and eminent scholar at Old Dominion University, Hailstork is among the most prominent living AfricanAmerican composers.

AFR’AM Festival One of the largest African-American cultural celebrations in the country, the AFR’AM Festival, held each Memorial Day weekend, is brimming with displays, exhibits, vendors, food concessions and headlining entertainment. It’s all designed to celebrate the richness of the African-American experience! INDIAN FESTIVALS India Festival Asian Indians of Hampton Roads bring India Fest to the Hampton Roads community. Northern and Southern Indian cuisine is offered at moderate prices, as well as native fabrics, music, folklore, books, videos, CDs, DVDs and jewelry. The henna tattoo booth is a special feature of the festival. Enjoy the Cultural Variety Show, the main attraction of the festival, where classical dance, folk dance, music and fashion are on display.
