Goodbye and farewell, NORJAM! by Rhiannon Boden As NORJAM 2014 drew to a close, all eyes fell to the Main Stage to deliver the Closing Ceremony as spectacular as the Jamboree that came before it. Though things were coming to an end, the energy was anything but fading, as crowds thousands strong rushed to commemorate what has been a truly legendary week! Things kicked off with a warm up set courtesy of DJ Nev, with arriving Scouts and Guides bouncing to their hearts content, before a live band showed up to rock the crowd into a frenzy. Next, came Jenny and George, whose piratical charm had spectators shouting along for the very last, and very loudest, time. 13 year old dancer Molly, 1st Garleston Guides said: “The crowd was amazing;
it was such a rush and an honour performing in front of everyone!” The atmosphere was tangible from start to finish, with everyone determined to end the week with a bang. Norjam’s Got Talent winner Arun had the amazing opportunity to wow the crowd, and his heartfelt rendition of Michael Buble’s “Lost” was met with raucous and earnest cheering. Community spirit came alive in the renewal of promises, with Guides and Scouts alike pledging to always do their best and to serve the community. Before returning for their final night as the “back in time” Subcamps, campers were treated to a dance along of epic proportions, with a video of staff, Scouts and even Senior Section showing off their best moves for the camera. 17, who is staying on the Saxon Subcamp said “We’ll never forget it. It’s our last time dancing together so it was certainly emotional, but the atmosphere was legendary.” As fireworks flew and music blared, there was no denying the incredible scale of the week. Even as the lights and sounds died down, it was clear the incredible skills, memories and friendships forged during the week would take a lot longer to fade.
Show in a day - take 2! After the success of the last performance, Show in a Day was back with another musical, this time of the ABBA variety. The waiting crowd were treated to a selection of dance-along classics, including a dramatic take on “Winner Takes It All” and a heartfelt rendition of “Dancing Queen”, to which the whole crowd got
involved, belting it out. 17 year old Bethany of 2nd West Lincoln Guides said: “It was amazing! A new twist on a classic!” With the lead’s amazing voice, the perfect synchronisation of the chorus and the fantastic dancing, it was clear NORJAM2014 has enough talent to start its very own West End!
Talent - NORJAM 2014 has it! by Jessica Lechmere
The atmosphere in the Main Arena last night was electric as the NORJAM’s Got Talent Final became the closest final Team Talent had ever seen; as well as the one with the highest decibel ratings. Over 200 applicants were whittled it down to 12 finalists over three nights from whom the judges picked their top three. Those top three were then left to the judgement of the audience as a decibel metre was used to pick up who the most popular act was. The readings were off the
charts, with the winning act, Arun, Vikings, having a decibel rating of 106.4, and the runners up, Matt, Romans, and Bethan, Stoneage, with ratings of 106.3 and 106.1, making it incredibly close. The judges had had a really tough decision; Pirate Jenny said that the talent had really blown them away this year. There were some truly unique acts, such as the Cougars ESU who are staying on Stoneage Subcamp, who danced with words written on them spelling out the lyrics to

‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’, and Rebecca and Aimee Louise, Victorians and Romans, signed and sang Clown, by Emili Sande, and the talent featured showed off a variety of mediums. There was lots of fabulous singing talent, such as Jude, Romans, who sang Wild Heart by the Vamps; Daisy, Tudors, who sang Something’s Got A Hold On Me by Christina Aguilera; and Luke, Tudors, who sang Lullaby by Nickelback. With the next two Adeles found in Ellie, Victorians,
who performed Skyfall, and Alice, Romans, who sang ‘One and Only’, as well as the next Michael Bublé in Arun, who sang ‘Lost’, and a future West End Star in Bethan; the multitudes of untapped talent became clear. Not only were there singing acts, but also several dance acts, such as Sophie, Romans, who danced to Robbie Williams’ Candy, and Victoria and Emiliya, Russian Scouts from Tudors. The talent displayed here at NORJAM this year has been exceptional.

Special guests visit us by Sarah Paget While taking part in all the activities you may or may not have seen a steady flow of up to 90 interested visitors each day. These Special Guests have been invited to experience NORJAM 2014. Arriving at the ornate main gate, they are led to the Special Guests Pavillion right through the heart of the site. They are welcomed with a reception provided by the ever efficient staff in the Guest Hospitality area before our Camp Chairman Richard Butler, Nickie Chapman and Pat Pinningham each take to the floor to explain just what has been happening here and who has been involved in making it all happen. The guests are then free to wander, soak up the atmosphere and experience all the NORJAM 2014 has to offer.
Wayne Bulpitt, UK Chief Commissioner for The Scout Association, visited earlier in the week. Summarising his visit he said: “I had an amazing time at NORJAM 2014, so many happy, smiley faces!” “I especially enjoyed my time on Romans presenting Chief Scout awards which epitomises the opportunities Scouting offers young people and making me so welcome.” Chairman of Norfolk County Council, Brian Hannah was “delighted to visit his first ever Jamboree. I feel for Norfolk to pull off such an amazing International Event is absolutely fantastic.” For Chief Executive for Royal Norfolk Agricultural Association, Greg Smith the summer is a busy period. “The Showground is a central place for Norfolk, so it seems only natural to host a Norfolk Jamboree here.”

Thank you and goodbye
We have come to the end of NORJAM 2014; it has been a whirl-wind of a journey with extreme weather across the spectrum, competitions and various activities that have been taken advantage of. Last night we witnessed the end of the Victorian era, with our own Subcamp staff dressing the part and joining in with the spectacular display! It
was moving to watch the newfound friendships grow and the NORJAM 2014 community thrive under the interaction of cultures across the site. We are all so fortunate to be a part of the NORJAM 2014 experience that has taken four years to arrange. We want to express our gratitude to all contingents and staff for their participation; without
any of you we would not be here. Farewell, safe journeys and roll on NORJAM 2018!
So long, farewell
So this is it, the last newspaper for NORJAM 2014 and it is sad that it is almost all over. We have had an amazing time and we hope you have as well. We have had a great week reporting to you and finding out about you all. It has been fantastic to see

you all getting involved in NORJAM 2014. So we hope you have a safe journey home and we hope to see you in 2018! Tudor fact: Some of the board games that Tudors played are still played today for example Chess and backgammon.

One last Viking roar
It might seem hard to believe, but NORJAM 2014 is really over. As our brave Vikings go their separate ways, they carry back to homes near and far with stories and memories that will last for years. It only remains for us to say a few thank yous. Thanks to all the staff that have made this NORJAM 2014 run so smoothly. Thanks to the staff you have seen, the Activity Teams as well as our Subcamp Staff,
especially our fearsome Viking Chief Simon for keeping our Subcamp afloat. Thanks also to those staff you may not have seen, services staff and all others behind the scenes who kept everyone safe, healthy and happy at NORJAM 2014. A big thank you to all the Leaders, for giving up your time to allow your Scouts and Guides to have this opportunity. Last but certainly not least, our
biggest thank you of all goes to our participants, because without you there wouldn’t have been a NORJAM 2014. Thanks everyone and we hope to see you in four years’ time!
Time to return to the present
Well what a week! First things first, we hope you all had a fantastic week, we know we have. We’ll all go away with many new memories, as well as friends and hope to see you all again in four years’ time to do it all again! A big Guiding and Scouting thank you to each and every one of you, from

The end of Ceasar’s reign
The end of the Roman Empire is now upon us and Ceaser is close to becoming a salad again. What a week we have all had from the lovely sun to Hurricane Bertha that caused little problems for our Empire. The Romans well and truly invaded. Last night saw the culmination of our Chariot race and we have been amazed at how much effort you have put into making
them. We had some crashes, giggles and plenty of cheering. Please share all your photos and best bits with us on our Facebook page over the next few weeks. From all your Roman Gods and Goddesses we hope you have had an amazing week, wish you a safe journey home and hope to see you all in four years. The closing words from
the Empire must come from Rominion “Tank Yu and Poopaye.” HAIL.
We’ve had a roaring time!
Well what a week we’ve had! The Stoneage Subcamp team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who visited us, as well as all the contingents on our Subcamp who helped create a fantastic sense of community with us. We’ve all made lifelong friendships as we undertook new and exciting challenges as part of Scouting and Guiding.

Contingents have taken part in everything from mammoth making to ice skating, zorbing to abseiling and created all manner of dinosaurs along the way. We can’t forget the high-adrenaline days out, the exciting offsite activities or the fantastic water fights, all showing that we really know how to have fun! All that remains to be said is that we hope
you’ve had a roaring time on the Subcamp that rocks and we hope to see you in 2018!

How it’s made
by Christopher Smith Ever wondered how your daily copy of The Norticle makes its way to your breakfast table every morning? The wonderful Norticle team, made up of editor Emma, designers Christopher and Ryan, and our six reporters Rhiannon, Bianca, Sarah, Jessica, Beth and Jay have produced eight jam-packed
papers during the week. Every morning, the team meet to be briefed on the stories of the day, and the news-gathering process begins, as reporters track down interview subjects and visit Activity Zones. The first words arrive back at Norticle HQ around 11am, where editor Emma will proof them, and pass copy on to the designers, to begin page layout. As the words pile in,

around 8pm. On Wednesday night, The Norticle team got the opportunity to visit the print centre, and see for ourselves just how our pages were made. Once the files arrive, plate operator Amanda runs the files through a specialist computer system that prints our paper onto four aluminium plates, one for each colour, ready to be attached to the printing drums. The drums transfer all four colours onto paper, and the first sight of The Norticle emerges, flying around the room on conveyor belts reminiscent of those used by the doors in Monsters Inc. It’s now midnight, and the high speed press takes a mere 12 minutes to run off the Norticle. Then, the papers are delivered overnight, ready for delivery to your Subcamps at 6.30am!
