STEM High School Bryan Bath House Roatan Island Hospital Tessellated Light Fixture

S T E M H I G H SCHOOL

Located near Downtown Bryan, Texas, a growing community intersecting art and life, the 38,000 sq. ft. STEM school is designed for approximately 325 students to provide a facility

Location Bryan, Texas Partner Catalina Morales

in which applied sciences and project-based learning meet. Through several design explorations an L shaped configuration emerged as an efficient organizational layout. Wanting to test other options, our design broke the “L” by slicing our program with central communal spaces to divide hands-on workshops from

traditional learning. The intersection and rotation of the two volumes allows for an invigorating green space next to the café and creates a clear horizontal and vertical circulation path. Our design seeks to maintain the honesty of the structure in a clean and sophisticated manner by exposing structural members.

B RYA N B A T H HOUSE

This bath house serves as a transitional object that connects the lesser developed downtown Bryan and the more developed

Location Bryan, Texas Partner Maura Perez Date Spring 2016

downtown Bryan. It was crucial for the design to utilize light as a material to penetrate spaces through clerestories, water, reflections, and washing upon walls. The approach to materials was to primarily use concrete and glass in order to maintain simplicity for this modern brutalist design. Three masses of differing program for the bath house rest upon the site. Each one differs in elevation: one is at ground level, another is partially submerged, and the last is a subterranean space.

Instructor Brian Gibbs

The merging of these three forms creates a wrapping scheme of L-shapes most notable in the bird’s eye view.

R O ATA N ISLAND

H O S P I TA L

In this project, Jeremiah Gonzalez and I were paired with seniors to assist on a portion of the project, a clinic. We

Location Roatan Island, Honduras

were given an 8 acre site in Dixon Cove, Roatan Island and then spent some time with the researching a desired program and thus began our design process. Once given the problem we

Partner Jeremiah Gonzalez, Megan Girvan, Victoria Codrington Date Spring 2015 Instructor Zhipeng Lu & George Mann

went from research which included climate analysis, precedent study and more to the design process. Though the process and formulation stages was the most iterative and changing, it enabled us the synthesize our design to be a mixture of beauty, experience, healing, sustainability and vernacular appropriateness. Our final design encompasses the beauty of the natural site on Roatan Island as well as more modern, almost playful elements like the building skin.

TESSE L I G H T FIXTURE

through what looks like sun rays expanding out and causing the light to wash out. Also, by using the two “S” shaped figures will weave themselves together without any adhesive to help create an illusion of an on going pathway as if the lights were just dancing through it.
