Normandy, the Impressionists’ favourite outdoor studio Impressionism was born in Normandy, from the meeting of English avant-garde painters (Turner, Bonington, Cotman) with their French counterparts (Géricault, Delacroix, Isabey), and the emergence of a French school of nature (Corot, Huet, Millet, Rousseau). At the beginning of the 1860s, the cream of the new painting movement gathered in Honfleur, at the ferme Saint-Siméon: Monet, Courbet, Daubigny, Boudin, Jongkind, Bazille... At the same time, Degas painted his first horse races at Le Pin National Stud, Manet revolutionised marine painting at Cherbourg, Courbet and Whistler painted seascapes at Trouville-Deauville and Berthe Morisot radiant landscapes on the Channel coast. With Impression, sunrise, painted at Le Havre in 1872, Claude Monet would give his name to Impressionism. Following him, all his friends (Degas, Pissarro, Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Gauguin, Sisley, Caillebotte) came to paint on the Normandy coast, and along the Seine. Colonies of foreign artists also settled in the region. Painting “schools” developed, from which young rebels arose (Seurat, Signac, Angrand, Dufy, Braque, Duchamp...). Yet it was Monet – more than half of whose work was executed in Normandy – who would carry Impressionism to its most brilliant heights, with his famous series the Cliffs of Etretat, the Cathedrals of Rouen, and the Water Lilies of Giverny. So it was that for over a century, the majestic current of Impressionism irrigated the land of Normandy, leading to exceptional harvests. We invite you to come and meet all these artists who revolutionised painting.

A

day in Rouen

Rouen is the city of Impressionism and its cathedral is an icon. Since the time of Turner and Bonington, the “town of a hundred bell towers” has attracted the greatest artists (Monet, Pissarro, Gauguin, Sisley) and inspired the creation of the Rouen School (Lebourg, Angrand, Delattre…). Its Museum des Beaux-Arts takes pride in exhibiting one of the greatest Impressionist collections in France. In Rouen you will find places which have been the source of so much inspiration: the Seine, its bridges and quays, the cathedral made famous by Monet, the Boieldieu bridge, the rue du Gros-Horloge (street of the Great Clock), the medieval quarter with its antique shops and art galleries… Original and fun activities on an Impressionist theme are also available.

The Cathedral

Did you know? To paint his twenty-eight canvases of the façade of the cathedral, Claude Monet had three studios. One of these was in the Renaissance Hotel on the cathedral square, which is now the Tourist Office and is open to visitors: it’s here that the “Paint like Claude Monet” workshop takes place. Did you know? Jean-François Millet is primarily known as the main representative of the Barbizon school, a village in the Fontainebleau forest, south of Paris, where you can visit his studio. But he was born and grew up on the Hague Peninsula, whose landscapes and buildings were a great source of inspiration. This is why his famous work The Sower, painted from memory at Barbizon, represents the hills of Gréville. The Cherbourg museum has an important collection of Millet’s works, including exceptional portraits of his first wife and his in-laws from Cherbourg.

day in an artists' village A

An artists’ village is so-called when, thanks to its atmosphere, its particular light and its cultural or natural wealth, it has attracted and inspired several generations of artists. In the days of the Impressionists, painters became involved in local village life but, being fairly poor for the most part, they would live at the local hostelry and exchange their paintings for board and lodging. Such was the case with the Ferme Saint-Siméon at Honfleur, as well as with the inn of the Moisy sisters at Saint-Cénéri-le-Gérei or with the ‘Vieux-Plats’ near Etretat. If some villages are linked to a particularly significant figure such as Claude Monet with Giverny or Eugène Boudin with Honfleur, they are also a source of inspiration for artists of today: you only need to see the number of art galleries and artists’ studios you can visit at Honfleur, Giverny, Saint-Cénéri-le-Gérei or La Bouille. Very different from one another, these four villages are veritable open air museums and are well worth a visit.

honfleur

One of France’s prettiest villages A small fortified port town which has miraculously preserved its medieval heritage, Honfleur, thanks to its old facades and its filigree of alleys has inspired many artists since the 15th century – painters, writers, musicians – fascinated by the picturesque character of this place. Artistic life is still very alive today: you will find many craftsmen (painters, sculptors, stained glass makers, framers), artists’ studios and galleries of paintings. Painters are often to be seen around the old harbour, and painting courses and workshops are on offer almost everywhere in town. Savour its charm and take the time to wander through the shops and galleries and to sit on a café terrace to watch the world go by. Honfleur is among those special places where time stands still… 40

giverny The village of claude monet Claude Monet fell under the spell of Giverny and moved there in 1883. The village rapidly became a meeting place for many artists: painters of the American colony moved here from 1887. In 1912, Pierre Bonnard bought a small property beside the Seine at Vernon five kilometres away. Giverny remains strongly associated with the figure of Claude Monet with his house and gardens which attract a large number of visitors every year. Take the time to amble through the streets of this charming little village, lined with shops, cafés and artists’ studios and galleries. Pause at the Baudy restaurant, which, as well as reserving a special welcome for you on its pretty shaded terrace right in the heart of the village, has a magnificent rose garden and an attractive artist’s studio used by Cézanne. Every year, the Museum of Impressionism hosts two major temporary exhibitions. A must-see! 1

The villages of artists of "La côte d’Albâtre" (or Alabaster Coast)

In olden days, Étretat was a small fishing village which was difficult to reach, but in the 19th century it became an artistic centre where painters (Isabey, Le Poittevin, Delacroix, Courbet, Monet, Boudin), writers (Guy de Maupassant, Maurice Leblanc) and musicians (Jacques Offenbach) would meet. With its spectacular white chalk cliffs and its stunning view over the sea, Étretat often provided the perfect backdrop for paintings. Don’t miss a visit to this bijou seaside resort, which is still just as charming today: stroll along the sea wall promenade, set off on a cliff top walk and catch your breath at the panorama over cliffs and sea and visit Notre-Dame church as well as the covered market, which was rebuilt according to the original architectural plan. Several castles, manor houses and villas are also to be seen in Étretat, whether it is Clos Lupin, Maurice Leblanc’s workshop, or the Manoir de la Salamandre or the Villa Orphée, which overlooks the whole of Étretat bay from its hilltop. Twelve kilometres north of Étretat, the village of Yport used to attract different artists – Corot, Renoir, Schuffenecker, Laurens, Fourié, Dieterle – in the 19th century, and they often had a residence here. Come and explore the beach which featured in their paintings with its rocks and tall cliffs. Further north but still on the Alabaster Coast, don’t miss the charming village of Veules-les-Roses. In the late 1860s it welcomed a whole colony of Russian painters who came to discover painting in the open air like their mentor Isabey. The seaside village is on the Veules, the smallest river in France, which is just a kilometre long!

A charming village perched on a rocky crag in the Orne

Saint-Cénéri-le-Gérei is a little village in the Orne county with a population of just 120 souls, which is well worth a stop even if for just two or three hours. Listed as one of France’s prettiest villages, it will doubtless enchant you with its old stone houses covered in wisteria and roses, its Romanesque church with magnificent frescoes from the 12th and 14th centuries, and its little stone bridge below which flows the Sarthe. In the 19th century many painters, such as Gustave Courbet, Jean-Baptiste Corot and Eugène Boudin fell under the charm of the place and brought their easels here to paint. The artists would get together at the inn of the Moisy sisters or at the painters’ tavern. The former, today in private hands, still has walls covered in portraits, graffiti and silhouettes painted by the artists at this time. As for the latter, where you can have a meal, the innkeeper often used to receive paintings from his clients as payment for their board and lodging. Today Saint-Cénéri is still home to many artists. Explore their studios and galleries, which are open to the public. There are several footpaths around the village. 116

Tours

The Claude Monet Grand Tour Claude Monet lived most of his life in Normandy. He spent his youth in Le Havre where he was schooled in landscape painting by Eugène Boudin and where he painted Impression, Sunrise, the emblematic painting of Impressionism. With his friends Eugène Boudin, Gustave Courbet, Frédéric Bazille and Johan Barthold Jongkind, he got together at the Ferme Saint-Siméon in Honfleur on the Côte Fleurie. On the Alabaster coast, he painted all the cliffs between Dieppe, Fécamp and Étretat and in Rouen he painted his famous series of Cathedrals. And he spent the last forty-three years of his life in Giverny where he completed his greatest series of works, Haystacks, Mornings on the Seine and Water Lilies.

The Claude Monet Grand Tour gives you the chance to follow the painter’s whole career from his beginnings through to the apotheosis of the Water Lilies, following in his footsteps across Normandy ending with the museums in Paris where his main works are exhibited today.

The complete tour takes about a week. We have split it up into six sections which allow you to build shorter programmes, according to the time available to your clients.

Claude Monet's Water Lilies

The Water Lilies series forms Monet’s most important pictorial work, stretching over more than a quarter of a century. Apart from the huge mural fresco that he left to the French nation in 1918, which can be admired at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, he completed about five hundred canvases at Giverny representing his famous lily pond. They can be found today in the world’s greatest art museums. This tour is a discovery of the Water Lilies or “Nympheas”, combining visits to Claude Monet’s house and gardens, which the artist himself created, and from which he drew his inspiration, and the Musée de l’Orangerie, specially laid out to Monet’s plans to accommodate his monumental fresco, giving “the illusion of a whole without end, of a wave without horizons or shores.”

The full tour ideally requires two days, but it is possible to complete this in a single day if you leave early in the morning.

Suggested Itinerary Start the day by visiting the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, where the Water Lilies fresco is exhibited. After this, head for Giverny. Stop for lunch at the Baudy restaurant, where a colony of American artists lived in Claude Monet’s time. Set aside the afternoon for visiting Monet’s house and gardens: it was here that Monet began his Water Lilies series in 1895, and here - in a specially designed studio starting in 1914 - that he undertook the great fresco on show at the Musée de l’Orangerie. Don’t miss the temporary exhibitions at the Museum of Impressionism, or the chance to wander through the village.

Claude Monet Water Lilies at Midday, 1918 Buhrle Collection, Zurich The Bridgeman Art Library

Did you know? Water Lilies are the result of cross breeding wild white water lilies with exotic coloured varieties. As a great lover of botany, Claude Monet discovered this new variety while visiting The Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889. Claude Monet donated his great fresco Water Lilies to the French nation in 1918 to commemorate the end of the war, choosing the Musée de l’Orangerie as their permanent home. With the support of his friend, Georges Clemenceau, he designed the exhibition space himself, and today eight of his compositions - each 2m (6½ ft) high - hang on the walls of two oval rooms.

Claude Monet's Cathedrals Together with the Water Lilies, the Cathedrals make up one of Claude Monet’s great series. Fascinated by the changing light, the artist completed twenty-eight canvases showing the façade of Rouen cathedral at different hours of the day. These works are now housed in the greatest art museums worldwide. This original tour combines guided visits to the Musée d’Orsay and Rouen Fine Arts museum, focusing on their fabulous Impressionist collections, which include four of Monet’s Cathedrals, together with a guided tour of Rouen, centred on the sites depicted by Monet, Pissarro, Gauguin, and their Impressionist friends. A unique tour, bringing together the charms of two cities.

The complete tour ideally requires two days, but it is possible in a single day if you leave early in the morning.

Suggested Itinerary Like Monet, you will start your tour of Rouen from Sainte-Catherine hill. Follow this with a visit to the cathedral, one of the city’s star attractions, and then discover the Impressionist collection at the Musée des Beaux-Arts.

The Seine of the Impressionists, from Paris to the sea Follow the Seine of the Impressionists, from Paris to the estuary. With its languid meanders, its everchanging reflections and its pearly light, the Seine Valley - from Paris to Honfleur - was frequently painted by the Impressionists. Eugène Boudin and Claude Monet even lived near the river’s edge. During their time, an age of industrialisation, the landscapes of the river were changing rapidly, with the appearance of metal bridges and factory chimneys. Attitudes were changing with the major developments in society of the time and lead to the growth of leisure time and of open-air waterside refreshment stops - the famous "guinguettes". On both sides of the river, numerous sites bear testament to these times: don’t miss places of historic interest, recently created leisure areas, "guinguettes", river excursions, plane flights, museums and gardens waiting to be discovered, as well as many walks.

This tour can be approached in different ways. One possibility is as a single journey from Paris to the coast, in which case allow a minimum of four or five days to discover all there is to see. Alternatively, it can be split into several stages, including for example the section Paris-Rouen, or Rouen-Honfleur: count on two or three full days for each leg of the journey. The richness and diversity of the sites around the Seine are suitable for a tour of several days, according to the time available, and personal preferences.

There are two possible itineraries: you can take in the complete circuit, visiting sites north and south of the river, or alternatively, you can discover the northern or southern part of the estuary in greater depth - in the north, visiting Le Havre, Saint-Adresse, and also Etretat, and in the south, Honfleur, Trouville, Deauville and Houlgate. In each case, don’t miss crossing the Pont de Normandie, which offers a superb view over the Seine estuary, and the Channel beyond.

Claude Monet’s House and Gardens, Giverny

Claude Monet lived for over forty years in his house in Giverny with its pink rendering and green shutters, from 1883 until his death in 1926. Passionate about botany as much as by colours and by painting, he created his flower garden and water garden as true works of art. In front of the house, the flower garden presents a profusion of bright colours, putting in mind a painter’s palette. Further on, in the water garden, you can admire the water lily pond, supplied with water from a diverted stream, and the famous Japanese bridge that the artist depicted so many times.

A limitless source of inspiration, this water garden led to the conception of the monumental Grandes Décorations Nymphéas, left by Monet to the French nation, which can be seen at the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris. In the house, visitors are invited to discover vividly coloured works and the astonishing collection of Japanese prints, whose arrangement was decided by Monet himself. Just a few steps away, the huge water lily studio houses The Claude Monet Foundation’s shop. Practical Information - Address: 84 rue Claude Monet, 27620 Giverny

The Baudy Restaurant, Giverny

The present-day Baudy Restaurant existed in Monet’s time and as well as meals, offered rooms for rent. The establishment was frequented by numerous painters, including Cézanne, Renoir, Sisley, Rodin and all the artists from the American colony, including Mary Cassatt, Robinson and Butler. An artists’ workshop was constructed here in 1887, on the initiative of the painters. This room – which can be visited – has retained its period feel intact. The restaurant offers traditional French cuisine, in a brasserie style. It has a 1900 interior, and a shaded terrace and is open for afternoon drinks. The proximity of Claude Monet’s garden and of a plant nursery near Giverny, has fostered the creation of a wild rose garden. Today, the garden of the former Hotel Baudy retains this charm of carefree abandon, where roses and other flowers stretch into the distance up the hillside Practical Information - Address: 81 rue Claude Monet, 27620 Giverny - Website: www.restaurantbaudy.com

Claude Monet’s grave, Giverny laude Monet lived in Giverny for forty-three years and it was his wish to be buried C in the village. His grave is located in the cemetery that surrounds the church of Sainte-Radegonde, several hundred metres from the Museum of Impressionism and Monet’s house. Access is open and free.

The Museum of Impressionism, Giverny

Every year, in cooperation with the Musée d’Orsay, the Museum of Impressionism presents two temporary exhibitions, which bring together original works of the biggest names in the Impressionist movement and notably those from the painters’ colony at Giverny and the valley of the Seine. Situated a short step from Claude Monet’s house and gardens, the museum thereby offers a new approach for understanding this international movement and its consequences for modern and contemporary art. Created by the landscape designer Mark Rudkin, the museum’s garden is made of monochrome flowerbeds, separated by clipped hedges. From one end of the garden to the other, from the pond to the poppy field, a succession of colourful flowerbeds lead up to the majestic hill of Giverny, so often depicted by Impressionist painters. In the heart of the museum, the restaurant and salon de thé Terra-Café can accommodate up to 100 people. You can lunch there and enjoy a range of varied menus, or try out Norman specialities. A pleasant shaded terrace looks out over the garden. Château-Gaillard at Les Andelys, with its panoramic view over the meander in the Seine

This medieval fortress was built at the end of the 12th century by Richard the Lionheart, duke of Normandy and king of England, on a hill overlooking the hill of Les Andelys. Reputed to be unassailable, it was finally taken by Philippe-Auguste in 1204, bringing about its attachment to Normandy and the Kingdom of France. Now in ruins, it overlooks a bend in the Seine and gives a magical view of the river valley, with a magnificent panorama of the surrounding chalk cliffs, the green riverbanks and the river itself. An exceptional spot not to be missed on any account, particularly in the evening as the sun sets. A number of painters, such as Turner, Daubigny, Signac and Lebasque were fascinated by this location, finding inspiration here. The cathedral Notre-Dame de Rouen

A masterpiece of Gothic art, Rouen cathedral stands like an elegant lacework of stone and dominates the city with its lofty silhouette. Characterised by the fineness of its lines, it is imposing in its dimensions (446ft long, with a nave 92ft high beneath its vaulted ceiling and a spire that reaches 495ft, making it the highest in France), in its sumptuous stained-glass windows and by the decorative richness of its doors and its two lateral towers. Following numerous artists, including William Turner, Claude Monet made it famous by creating 28 canvases of the main façade, painted at different moments of the day, from the three studios where he worked, situated in the Place de la Cathédrale, facing the building. A monument emblematic of Rouen, the cathedral is still the scene of numerous events: an Impressionist sound and light show on the façade during summer evenings, concerts, markets and so on. Tourist and Conference Information Centre Rouen Seine Valley Normandy offer a tour for adult groups, entitled “Discovering the architecture and history of the cathedral” and two tours for schoolchildren, entitled “The cathedral: a building site in the Middle Ages - architecture, history and crafts involved in construction” and “Stained glass, space and light: the cathedral’s collection of stained glass windows” (both for primary and secondary school children). The abbey of Jumièges, near Rouen

This magnificent Benedictine abbey, situated on the banks of the Seine, was originally founded in the 7th century. The Great Clock with its Museum of Time and its 360° view over the rooftops of Old Rouen

Right in the heart of the old town of Rouen, abutting a Gothic belfry, a Renaissancestyle arch crosses the rue du Gros-Horloge. It bears a magnificent and imposing 16th-century astronomical clock, whose mechanism is one of the oldest in Europe. The ensemble forms what is known as the Gros-Horloge. It was frequently depicted by English watercolourists of the 19th century, such as Turner and Bonington, but also by the painters of the Rouen School, including Lemaître. The clock is open to visitors and the contemporary displays show the fabulous clockwork, the first municipal chiming clocks and above all, a magnificent panorama over the rooftops of Old Rouen, painted by Camille Pissarro and the cathedral of Notre-Dame, painted so many times by Claude Monet. The Maritime, River and Port Museum, Rouen

Situated 60 miles from the coast, Rouen is an inland port. For several centuries, its proximity to Paris made it the premier port in France and today it remains the leading European port handling grain. Located on the banks of the Seine, in a former warehouse, the Maritime, River and Port Museum retraces the history of the port of Rouen and of the Seine. Several themes are addressed: the port’s great historic moments, its facilities and the widening of the Seine downstream from Rouen, the great sailing ships of Rouen, maritime trade, naval construction, whaling and the history of submarines. The nearby quays form a promenade much appreciated by the city’s inhabitants: it was here that the great sailing ships participating in the Armada came to dock. The Secq des Tournelles Museum of Ironwork, Rouen

Installed in the former 16th-century church of Saint-Laurent of Rouen, this museum displays one of the finest collections of ironwork in the world. The objects, created from antiquity to modern times, are of great variety and there are many impressive sets of gates, railings and signs, tools, household utensils, locks, strongboxes, jewels and ornaments in iron. This is because of the material – iron, worked when hot, becomes malleable, allowing the creation of a great diversity of form. Although essentially from France and Europe (Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands), some pieces are of oriental origin. Impressionist itineraries prepared by the Seine-Maritime Tourist Board

Five walks in Dieppe, Fécamp, Etretat, Rouen and along the valley of the Seine, highlighting the main themes portrayed by Impressionists: holidays, the sea, the river, fleeting moments and the light on the estuary. The routes follow in the footsteps of Monet, Pissarro, Boudin, Eva Gonzales, Renoir and their friends, using panels each featuring a work by a painter, with a commentary, installed at the exact point where the artist painted. On each one, a QR code gives information in different languages on all the Impressionist sites in Seine-Maritime, on pictures and artistic movements. This “open-air museum” gives an appreciation of the canvases found in the different museums of the Seine-Maritime. Sunset walk along the banks of the Seine, followed by a drink at the docks, Rouen

It was at Rouen that Camille Pissarro painted his famous series of quaysides and bridges, one of which - Le Pont Boieldieu – is kept at the Musée des BeauxArts. Since the recent renovation of the river’s right bank, the Seine’s quaysides make an enjoyable walk: for almost 3 miles, this lively public space, so intimately linked with the art of living in Rouen, is dedicated to walkers, cyclists and rollerbladers. Between the William the Conqueror and Flaubert bridges, the city’s industrial heritage has been restored. It houses – apart from its numerous cafés, bars and restaurants – an astonishing museum: the H2O, dedicated to science. On fine days, don’t miss an aperitif at sunset on the riverside terraces. Unforgettable memories! On summer evenings, the Impressionist light show on the façade of the cathedral of Rouen

On summer evenings, a remarkable sound and light show magically plays over the façade of the cathedral of Notre-Dame. The Old Dock of Honfleur

Created at the end of the 17th century on the orders of Colbert, the old dock or ‘Vieux-Bassin’ is one of the most famous sites in France and the one most often depicted by painters, including Corot, Boudin, Monet, Seurat and others. It is here that boats and sailboats are moored when they are not at sea. The Vieux-Bassin is flanked by the coloured facades of high, narrow houses constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries. At its far end is the Lieutenance, which served as the lodge of the King’s Lieutenant from the 17th century. Sainte Catherine church and its bell tower, Honfleur

The bell tower was immortalised in numerous works by Eugène Boudin, Barthold Jongkind and also Raoul Dufy, some of which are on display at the Eugène Boudin Museum, a short distance away. Constructed out of wood in the second half of the 15th century, the church is unusual in being separated from its bell tower by a little public square! Built along the lines of a market hall, the interior architecture merits a visit, since its ceiling has the appearance of a boat’s hull turned upside down. The place is now much more luxurious, but it remains one of the emblematic sites of Impressionism in Normandy. In its Michelin star restaurant three gourmet Impressionist menus are available. The Salt Warehouses, Honfleur

Honfleur was an important fishing port in the 17th century. Cod fishing on the Newfoundland Grand Banks brought about the development of the trade in salt. Three warehouses were built, designed to hold 10,000 tonnes of salt. Two of these buildings still exist today, opening their doors to the public in the summer, for exhibitions or concerts and for guided tours organised by the Tourist Office. Take a look at their magnificent timber-framed roofs, constructed by naval carpenters in the 17th century, which evoke ships’ hulls from that time. Guided tour of Trouville

In 1825, Charles Mozin, a Parisian landscape painter, fell under the charm of the little fishing port of Trouville. While exhibiting his canvases at the Salon, he aroused the interest of painters such as Isabey, Huet and Corot, who followed him into the area. Trouville became famous for its sea bathing. So it was that splendid villas, hotels and casinos came to be built along the seafront. This guided tour, organised by the Trouville Tourist Office, gives a flavour of the ambiance. The boardwalk promenade, Deauville

The expression Les Planches, or The Boards, refers to an assembly of planks made out of exotic woods, laid out along the entire length of Deauville beach, and forming the walking highlight of the town. A typical apartment designed by Perret, Le Havre

The new buildings which came to life were functional and resolutely modern. We offer you the opportunity to visit a typical apartment, in tune with the spirit of the time with its 1950s design. Don’t miss this visit, which will allow you to better understand and appreciate the raw concrete architecture of Le Havre, which has been a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Saint-Joseph Church, Le Havre

Standing over 100 metres tall, Saint-Joseph church can be seen from far off as a sort of ‘spiritual lighthouse’ raised in memory of the town’s inhabitants killed in the bombings of 1944. Auguste Perret chose to build it in bare concrete, like all the other buildings in the new town centre. It has a particularly austere outdoor, but don’t hesitate to step inside: its interior is sublime and its modern architecture makes it truly fascinating! The subtle play of light changes with the sun, thanks to Marguerite Huré’s stained glass windows, which are not be missed on any account! You will be amazed. Ango Manor, Varengeville-sur-Mer

Jehan Ango (1480 – 1551) was a rich and famous ship owner from Dieppe, close to the French king François 1st. A very powerful man, he had a summer palace built, Ango Manor, on the heights not far from Dieppe from where he could keep an eye on the comings and goings of his ships. He called upon several Italian craftsmen for the building, which made his manor a pure jewel of the Italian Renaissance in Normandy. The picturesque port of Barfleur where Paul Signac lived

Barfleur was one of the most important Channel ports in the Middle Ages. Duke William may have left from here for his conquest of England in 1066. With its adorable granite houses and its location by the sea at the end of the Cherbourg Peninsula, Barfleur is a picturesque little port which has beguiled many artists, painters and writers. Paul Signac was amongst them. He lived here from 1932 to 1935 in a house facing the church, today marked with a plaque. The artist was passionate about the sea and had several yachts. He completed an important watercolour series of French ports, including the port of Barfleur.
