Norman Foster Foundation
The Norman Foster Foundation promotes interdisciplinary thinking and research to help new generations anticipate the future. The first mission of the Norman Foster Foundation is to promote the importance of architecture, infrastructure and urbanism for the betterment of society. To this end, the second mission is to encourage new thinking and research across traditional boundaries to help younger generations anticipate the challenges of future change. In particular, it addresses those professionals who are concerned with the environment—architects, engineers, designers, urbanists, civic leaders, planners and artists. This is at the heart of a holistic approach to design and is ever more relevant as populations shift to cities. With the implications of climate change, robotics and artificial intelligence, sustainable design is not about fashion but about survival. The Foundation holds the Norman Foster Archive and Library, which provide a window into the larger narrative and history of our built environment through the work of Norman Foster. This is complemented and supported by drawings and models from other significant architects such as Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe, Charles and Ray Eames, Buckminster Fuller, Richard Rogers, Zaha Hadid, and Tadao Ando. Through its research initiatives and programmes, the Norman Foster Foundation encourages the transfer of advanced knowledge in a wide range of design fields. The Foundation’s educational initiatives are structured around research and workshops, fellowships and forums around the Foundation’s core objectives. The Norman Foster Foundation is based in Madrid and operates globally. The headquarters are located in a heritage-listed palace designed by the celebrated architect Joaquín Saldaña in 1912 for the Duke of Plasencia. The courtyard of the Foundation is the setting for the pavilion, a space displaying objects and audio visual materials of projects, places, people, sculptures and paintings that can inspire future visitors to the Foundation in the same way that they once inspired Norman Foster and his work.

Outline
The NFF Archive’s holdings span chronologically from the 1950s to the present. The collection relates to works from Norman Foster’s student years at Manchester and Yale University; projects and proposals by the firms he founded (Team 4, Foster Associates, Sir Norman Foster and Partners and Foster + Partners); utopian proposals created with lifelong collaborators such as Buckminster Fuller; and projects developed by the Foundation itself. Each intern will have the opportunity to work with a variety of models both from the Archive Collections and the Architecture, Design and Technology Units, while also collaborating with professional model making studios based in Madrid. During their time at the Foundation, interns will be asked to perform the following tasks: - Attendance to Introductory Seminars and weekly work reviews - Research on the selected models of study, making use of the Archive to gather information, to be further developed through different means, including CAD drawings - Creation of models, based on the CAD drawings previously developed - To build models for current projects from the Architecture Design and Technology Units Interns will be part of the Norman Foster Foundation team, following their working schedule.

Programme
The Norman Foster Foundation’s Model Making Internship Programme will take place next summer (2019) in its headquarters in Madrid. It will consist on a series of workshops and research initiatives of three months duration (June - August). The Programme will be structured in two main work paths: NFF Archive Model Collection and NFF Architectural projects. The interns will team up with the Archive and Education & Research Units to work in three different workshops within the NFF Archive Model Collection: Analysis and Restoration, Archive research and model proposals and Collaboration with Model Making Studios. Besides, interns will be part of the Architecture, Design and Technology Units developing models for the Norman Foster Foundation Architectural projects.
Norman Foster Foundation Archive Model Collection Analysis and Restoration The Model Making interns will be asked to analyse the models placed in the Archive Galleries and will produce reports of their current status. Each group will work on a series of detailed descriptions, explaining all the damages present in each model, illustrated by a thorough photographic report. Research and Model Proposal Interns will research projects from different periods of Norman Foster’s work, together with the Education and Research Units team. The selection of projects will include models from Foster’s time as a student at Yale to projects developed by Foster+Partners. Studying and working with these models, interns will have an opportunity to better understand the development of Foster’s career and the different influences and inspirations reflected on his work. 11

Collaborations with Model Making Studios To complete the Educational Programme, the Foundation has partnered with professional Model Making studios in Madrid, offering interns an insight to the professional world of model making. The studios will tutor interns during the production of exhibition copies inside their facilities. The models’ fabrication will be executed under professional standards of Model Making studios in collaboration with the Summer Model Making interns.
Norman Foster Foundation Projects During their internship, interns will be involved in a wide variety of projects developed by the Architecture, Design and Technology Units, always mentored by members of the team who will guide them through the different stages of the projects. The projects require, not only final models but, working models to illustrate and develop conceptual ideas internally and for the clients. By collaborating with these units, interns will have the opportunity to become part of a multidisciplinary team. This collaboration means they will learn the demands of working in an architectural firm by being involved in the work-flow of the team and in the different daily processes. Interns will also benefit from the diversity of ongoing projects in the Architecture, Design and Technology Units that result from the collaboration of the Norman Foster Foundation with universities, research institutes, local governments and industry partners.

Previous editions
During 2018, framed within a seasonal Internship Programme, the Norman Foster Foundation launched its Model Making and Materials Research Programme to allow students to get a deeper understanding of the Foundation’s mission and objectives while broadening their knowledge and professional experience. Over a two- to three-month period, interns had the opportunity to work with different units at the Foundation, undertaking research, conservation interventions and producing models. The Model Making Programme was structured so that each student was able to work with a variety of models from the archive galleries, developing selected models for the Foundation’s projects while collaborating with professional model making studios based in Madrid to produce state-ofthe-art replicas. Students were asked to analyse and research different models, to identify those that required conservation and to reconstruct those that were no longer extant. The Foundation partnered with professional model making studios in Madrid to complete the educational programme and offer students an insight into the professional world of model making. Together with them, interns oversaw the creation of a series of replica models, from concept to realisation. Finally, interns collaborated with the Foundation’s Architecture, Design and Technology Units. The projects developed required, not only final models but, working models to illustrate and develop conceptual ideas for clients. By collaborating with these units, interns had the opportunity to become part of an interdisciplinary team, directly involved in the diverse processes of a design studio. The collaborating institutions were SAL School, Ahmedabad, India; Arts University Bournemouth, United Kingdom; and Escuela Artediez, Madrid, Spain.
